Anyone can ap preciate t h e advantages of t he autopilot – being free to carry out navigational checks, trim adjustments or simply to relax and enjoy .
1. PRI NCI PLE OF TH E AUT OPI LOT 1-2 Principle o f Operation In the AUTO modes, the heading inf orm ation from an associated sensor is continuousl y compared with the set course (in the NA V mode, the course to t he waypoint set on t he plotter connect ed).

3-1 3. STEERING MODES The NA Vpilot-500 syste m is capable of five primary steering m odes: STBY (manual), AUT O, NA V , REMOTE (FU and NF U) and DODG E. In case of em ergency , for example, collision a voidanc e, turn t he helm quickly to control the boat m anuall y .
3. ST EERING MODES 3-2 3.2 A UTO Mode 3.2.1 Using the A UTO mode The AUTO mode makes the NA Vpilot-500 steer the boat autom at ically on a set course. Note: The AUTO m ode will not brin g your boat t o t he destination when wind or tide prevails. Use t his mode f or a short straight voyage.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-3 3.2.2 A D V A NCED AU T O mode AUTO mode maintains set course but the t r ack m ay be shifted by current or wind. ADV ANCED AUTO mode maintains set course without de viating f r om the track.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-4 3.2.3 TURN mode (For A UTO mode) The [TURN] key provides a turn f eature when in t he AUTO mode. This function changes t he current set course to be 180° or 360°. This is usef ul when you want t o back to the position where a fish school appears on the echo sounder .
3. ST EERING MODE 3-5 3.3 NA V Mode 3.3.1 St arting the NA V mode The plotter connect ed to the aut opilot knows the present position and l ocation to a destination waypoi nt.

W hen the ship goes out f r om the course bet ween starting point (previ ous waypoint f or route) and destinati on waypoint because of t ide, wind etc, each m ethod funct ions as below .
3. ST EERING MODE 3-7 3.3.3 Sw itching w a y point W hen you arrive at a waypoint on a route in th e NA V mode, you can switch to the next waypoint autom atically or m anually . AUTO sw itches the TO waypoint when your boat is within the arrival alarm area (set on the plot t er).
3. ST EERING MODES 3-8 ORBIT CW ORBIT CCW CLO VER LEAF OFF Fishing mode opti ons w indow 3. Rotate the [E NT ER] knob to select option desir ed. OFF: The NA V m ode changes to the AUTO mode when the boat arrives to the (last) waypoint, and the boa t keeps the course at the moment of arriving the w aypoint.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-9 ORBIT mode W hen selecting the ORBIT C W or ORBIT CC W , operate the aut opilot as sho wn below . WARNING Do not use the ORBIT mode in rough sea. Because the boat turns a 360-degree circle around the waypoint a large wave or strong wind can cause the boat to capsize.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-10 CLOVER LEA F For the CLOVER REAF m ode, set the distance “d” shown in the f igure on page 3-8 for orbit at t he NA V mode menu, ref erring t o steps 2 through 5 in the above. Note: Reduce boat’s speed less than 10 kt t o activate this f unction.

3. ST EERING MODES 3-12 FU is one of manual steering modes, w hich out puts an absolute value determined with the [ENTER] knob to drive the rudder , thus changing the ship’ s course at a given rate o f change towards a se t point. One clic k of button changes the course by a definite step.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-13 Button (F AP-621 1, 621 2), Lever (F AP-6221, F AP-6222), Dodge (F A P-6231, 6232) t ype remote controller These controllers m ay be used in the STBY , AUTO and NA V m odes. 1. For button and lever t ype rem ote controllers, t urn on the remote controller power .

The equipment goes into the DODGE mode and the audible alarm sounds when one of the above keys is operated, to alert you to dodge operation.
4-1 4. MENU OPERA TION Most settings are carried out on the m enus. The items shown depend on the m ode in use. For the STBY mode the complete menu is shown. I n case of t he AUT O or NA V m ode the items m ost often adjusted in the correspondin g m ode are shown.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-2 Offsetting the headi ng dat a Offset the heading d ata received f rom the heading sensor if the heading data shown on the control unit diff ers from the indicatio n of t he ship’ s compass. This of fset is applied to the heading sensor data.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-3 4.1.2 Setting p arameters The P ARAMETER SETUP menu sets various paramet ers for the control of t he NA Vpilot -500. 1. On the STBY mode, press the [MENU] key to open the STBY mode menu. 2. Rotate the [ENTER] knob to select “P ARAMETER SETUP”.

4. MENU OPERA TION 4-5 Setting parameters manually W hen MANUAL-CALM, MODERA T E or ROUGH is selected at the previous paragraph, set MANUAL P ARAMETER as below . Y o u can set three paramet ers for MANUAL f unction: Weather , Rudder gain and Counter rudder .
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-6 WEA T HER W hen the sea is rough, the boat’s heading f luctuates t o port and starboard. If the rudder is driven very oft en to maintain the set course, t he helm mechanism may wear out. T o prevent this, the weather adj ustm ent makes the NA Vpilot-500 insensit ive to m inute course deviations.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-7 Set rudder gain so that t he boat does not m ake f requent yaw . The figure sho wn below provides general guide lines f or setting rudder gain.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-8 Adjusting the sensi ti vity in monitori ng the boat’s trim The NA Vpilot-500 continuall y m onitors the boat’s trim in order to keep t he trim sensitivity optimum . A lower setting is comm on because boat’s trim usually does not change quickl y .
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-9 When towi ng the net W hen a boat is in tow of the fishing gear , its stern is “dragged” by the net . This causes the boat to stray f rom its intended course. T o keep the boat on course, you need to adj ust the trim manuall y , which can be bot hersom e.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-10 4.1.3 Setting the unit s of measurement s The DISPLA Y SETUP menu allows you to choose units of m easurement. 1. Press the [ST BY] and [MENU] key in order to open t he STBY mode m enu. 2. Rot ate the [ENTER] kn ob to select “DISPL A Y SETUP ”.

It allows you to view and control a sim ulated autopilot without positi on-f ixing equipm ent.
