5 I NTRODUCTION CAUTION: When using telephone equipment, there are basic safety instructions that should always be followed. Refer to the IMPOR T ANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS provided with this product and save them for future reference. Congratulations on purc hasing the GE Dual Cordless Handset T elephone S ystem.
6 IMPORT ANT: Because cordless phones operate on electricity , you should have at least one phone in your home that isn’ t cordless, in case the power in your home goes out.

9 P ARTS C HECKLIST Make sure your pac k age includes the items shown here. M ODULAR J ACK R EQUIREMENTS Y ou need an RJ1 1C type modular jac k, which is the most common type of phone jac k and might look like the one pictured here. If you don ’t have a modular jac k, call your local phone company to find out how to get one installed.
10 I MPORT ANT I NST ALLATION I NFORMA TION • Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm. • Never install telephone jac ks in wet locations unless the jac k is specifically designed for wet locations.
11 I NST ALLING THE P HONE Choose the best location to install your base and handset c harge cradle. Y our base and handset c harge cradle should be placed on a level surface suc h as a desk or table top, or you may mount the base on a wall. C ONNECTING THE AC (E LECTRICAL ) P OWER 1.
12 C ONNECTING THE T ELEPHONE L INE On the base, plug the one end of the telephone line cord into the jac k on the bac k of the base and the other end into a modular wall phone jac k. W ALL M OUNTING THE B ASE NOTE: For best results, leave the base on a flat sur face during initial charging before you hang it on the wall.
13 5. Press the OK sof t k ey to save your selection. NOTE: Press the EXIT soft key once to keep the previous setting and return to the main menu. A REA C ODE Make sure your handset is in the menu mode. 1. P ress the cid/vol (up and down ar row) button to mo ve the cur sor to AREA CODE .
14 T ONE /P ULSE Most telephone systems use tone dialing, however , some may still use pulse dialing. This system is pre-set to tone dialing. Depending on your service type, set the dialing mode as follows: Make sure your handset is in the menu mode. 1.

Y ou will hear a confirmation tone. NOTE: Press the EXIT soft key once to keep the previous setting and return to the main menu.
17 NOTE: T o deactivate the walkie talkie feature, press the EXIT soft key on each handset to return to standby mode. Y ou will hear a confirmation tone. D EF AUL T S ETTING As you become familiar with this system, you may prefer to use the system’ s original settings.
18 A NSWERING A C ALL 1. Pic k up the handset and press the talk/callbac k button on the handset. 2. When finished, press talk/callbac k to hang up. NOTE: Adjust the handset volume by pressing the cid/vol (up or down arrow) button during a call.
19 NOTE: When the handset is set to RINGER OFF , the ringer off icon displays continuously until the ringer is turned back on. F LASH /C ALL W AITING If you subscribe to the combined Call W aiting Caller ID service from your local telephone company , you will receive Caller ID information (if available) on Call W aiting calls.
20 P AGE The page feature helps you locate a misplaced handset. T o send and receive pages, all handsets must be registered. If your handset is not registered, follow the instructions in the Registration section of this manual. H ANDSET TO H ANDSET P AGING Dual handsets will be respectively assigned with handset 1 and handset 2.
21 1. Dial the telephone number and wait for the line to connect. 2. When your call is answered, press the * tone button on the handset number pad to temporarily c hange from PULSE dialing to T ONE dialing. 3. F ollow the automated instructions to get the information you need.
22 R ECEIVING AN I NTERCOM C ALL When an intercom call is received, the handset rings. T o answer the intercom call, press the page/int but ton on the handset.
23 T HREE -W AY C ALLING 1. During an external call, press the HOLD soft key to place external call on hold. 2. P ress the CONF sof t key . LINE ON HOLD EXTENSION? shows in the display . 3. Use the touc h tone pad to select Handset 1 or Handset 2. Y ou will hear a paging tone and P AGING FROM .
24 M EMORY The handset has memory dialing storage areas. F i fty 15-c haracter names and 24-digit telephone numbers may be stored in the handset memory . S TORING N AMES AND N UMBERS IN M EMORY 1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in T ALK mode). 2. P ress the DIR soft key to display SELECT MEMO R Y 0 1 -50.
25 S TORING A R EDIAL N UMBER 1. Mak e sure the phone is OFF (not in T ALK mode). 2. Press the DIR sof t k ey to display SELECT MEMOR Y 0 1-50. 3. Press an y number k ey (0 1 -50) to store the phone number in that memory location, or press cid/vol (up and down ar row) button to scroll to the desired memory location.
26 To Chang e: Use the same procedure to c hange a stored number as you do to store a number and just replace one stored phone number with a dif ferent one. To Delet e: 1. Mak e sure the phone is OFF (not in T ALK mode). 2. Press the DIR sof t k ey to display SELECT MEMOR Y 0 1-50.
27 C HAIN D IALING FROM M EMORY Use this feature to make calls that require a sequence of number s, suc h as a calling card number used for a frequently called long distance number .
28 C ALLER ID E RROR C ODES V arious Caller ID er ror messages may appear in the display . Refer to the Caller ID Display Messages section for more information. R ECEIVING AND S TORING C ALLER ID R ECORDS When you receive a call, the Caller ID information is transmitted between the first and second ring.
29 R EVIEWING THE C ALLER ID L IST As calls are received and stored, the display is updated to let you know how many calls have been received. T o scroll through Caller ID list: 1. P ress the cid/vol (up or down ar row) button to review the newest Caller ID record.
30 1. Use the cid/vol (up or down ar row) button to scroll to the desired Caller ID record. 2. P ress the SA VE sof t k ey to display SELECT MEMOR Y 0 1-50. 3. Use the touc h tone pad to enter a memory location number (for example, press 0 1 to store the record in memory location one).
31 3. If the number will not dial as shown, press the format/conference button. R epeat if necessary , until the correct number of digits show in the display .
32 C HANGING THE B A TTERY CAUTION: T o reduce the risk of fire or personal injury , use only the battery 5-2459 that is compatible with this unit. Make sure the 5telephone is OFF before you replace bat tery . 1. R emove the bat tery compartment door .
33 B EL T CLIP AND O PTIONAL H EADSET C ONNECTING THE B EL T CLIP To attac h the belt clip, inser t the sides of the belt clip into the slots on eac h side of the handset. Snap the ends of the belt clip into place. C ONNECTING AN O PTIONAL H EADSET TO THE H ANDSET Eac h handset can be used with an optional headset hands free operation.
34 D ISPLA Y M ESSAGES The following indicators show the status of a message or of the unit. INCOMPLETE D A T A Caller ID information has been interrupted during transmission or the phone line is excessively noisy . ENTER NAME P rompt telling you to enter the name in one of the 50 memory locations.
35 PA GING or S omeone has pressed the page/int but ton on the PA GING FROM base or handset. BL OCKED NUMBER The person is calling from a number that has been bloc k ed from transmission. REPT R epeat call message. Indicates that a new call from the same number was received more than once.
36 T ROUBLESHOOTING G UIDE T ELEPHONE No dial tone • Chec k installation: Is the base power cord connected to a working electrical outlet? Is the telephone line cord connected to the base unit and the modular w all jac k? • Connect another phone to the same jac k.
37 Y ou experience static, noise, or fading in and out • The handset may be out of range. Move closer to base. • Make sure base is not plugged into an electrical outlet with another household appliance. If necessary , relocate the base. • Charge the bat tery (for 12 hours).
38 C ALLER ID No Display • Be sure the battery is properly c harged (for 1 2 hour s). Or replace the battery . • Make sure the unit is connected to a non-switc hed electrical outlet.
39 G ENERAL P RODUCT C ARE To k eep your unit working and looking good, follow these guidelines: •A v oid dropping the handset, as well as other rough treatment to the phone. • Clean the phone with a soft cloth. • Never use strong cleaning agents, paint thinner , abrasive powder , alcohol, or other c hemical products to clean the unit.
