G1021Z 15" Planer -5- 9. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORD . Make sure your e xtension cord is in good condi- tion. Conductor size should be in accor- dance with the char t belo w . The amperage rating should be listed on the motor or tool nameplate. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line v oltage resulting in loss of pow er and ov erheating.

G1021Z 15" Planer -7- 220V Operation SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS The G1021Z Planer motor is wired to operate at 220V only . A cordset without a 220V plug is included with the Model G1021Z. Plugs and receptacles can be purchased at your local hard- ware store or home center .
-8- G1021Z 15" Planer SECTION 3: GENERAL INFORMA TION T o operate this , or any po wer tool, saf ely and efficiently , it is essential to become as familiar with its characteristics as possible . The time you in vest bef ore y ou begin to use y our Model G1021Z will be time well spent.
G1021Z 15" Planer -9- Unpac king The planer is shipped from the f actor y in a care- fully pack ed crate. If you find the machine to be damaged after you’v e signed for deliv ery and the truck and driver are already gone , you will need to file a freight claim with the carrier .
-10- G1021Z 15" Planer Clean Up The unpainted surf aces are coated with a waxy oil to protect them from corrosion during ship- ment. Remov e this protectiv e coating with a sol- v ent cleaner or citrus-based degreaser . A v oid chlorine-based solvents as the y ma y damage painted surf aces should the y come in contact.
G1021Z 15" Planer -11- Lifting Handles This planer is heavy and a wkwar d to move. W e recommend that y ou use the pr oper equipment to put the planer into position in y our shop or on a mobile base. Lifting with- out proper equipment or ample assistance could result in serious injury .
-12- G1021Z 15" Planer Extension Roller s Speed Change Knob The inf eed and outf eed e xtension rollers suppor t the work as it goes through the machine. T O MOUNT THE EXTENSION R OLLERS: 1. Thread three (3) 8mm setscrews into the mounting brac k et of the e xtension rollers.
G1021Z 15" Planer -13- Planer knives are dangerousl y sharp. Use extreme caution when w orking near cutting surfaces. Failure to e xer cise care while working near knives could result in se vere personal injury . Knife Setting Jig The knif e setting jig has been provided to mak e knif e setting quic k and easy .
-14- G1021Z 15" Planer SECTION 5: ADJUSTMENTS Overview Once assembly has been completed, y our G1021Z 15" Planer requires just a f e w adjust- ments to ready it f or use in y our shop .
G1021Z 15" Planer -15- Gauge Block Bef ore attempting any tab le adjustments, you will need to construct a gauge bloc k. See Figure 10 . A larger gauge bloc k diagram is also included at the end of the manual f or your conv enience. Precision adjustments later on require accuracy when milling the gauge bloc k.

Adjustments should be as precise as possible with toler ances within .
-18- G1021Z 15" Planer Figure 16. Proper knife setting jig placement. 3. Remov e the belt guard. Carefully tur n the cutterhead (using the pulley) until the first knif e is top dead center . 4. Using the knif e setting gauge, chec k the knif e height.

Do not adjust one knife without adjusting the other s as well. Improper knif e height adjustment can result in damage to knives, poor planer per- formance and possib le operator injury .
-20- G1021Z 15" -20- The kniv es are lock ed into the cutterhead with wedge-type gibs and gib bolts . Jack scre ws under the kniv es ma y be substituted with springs to help in the setting process. It is advised that the jack screws be remo v ed when using the springs.

-22- G1021Z 15" Planer Feed Roller Height The inf eed and outf eed rollers propel the lumber through the planer . The rollers also press the lum- ber flat against the planer table . Set the inf eed and outf eed rollers 0.040" belo w the knif e edge at bottom dead center .

-24- G1021Z 15" Planer Bed Roller s Figure 27. Inspecting bed roller height. 4. Use a wrench to tur n the eccentric shafts which adjust roller height. Stop turning when the table rollers are at the proper height. 5. Once your roller heights are correct, re- tighten all the setscrews .
G1021Z 15" Planer -25- Chip Deflector The chip deflector keeps chips from f alling onto the outf eed roller . It is the orange plastic plate located under the top cov er . The be v eled edge of the chip deflector should be about 1 ⁄ 8 " - 1 ⁄ 4 " from the knif e edge.
-26- G1021Z 15" Planer The Model G1021Z Planer provides an anti-kic k- back saf ety feature . The anti-kickbac k fingers hang from a rod suspended across the front of the cutterhead casting. The anti-kickback fingers should be inspected regularly .
G1021Z 15" Planer -27- T O CHECK BEL T TENSION: Squeeze the V -Belts at their midpoints with mod- erate finger pressure . Y ou should be ab le to deflect each V -Belt about 3 / 4 ". Belts will rarely be too tight, but will sometimes be too loose .
-28- G1021Z 15" Planer The thickness scale , located belo w the handwheel, can be adjusted f or accuracy . Howe v er , material must be run through the machine to adjust the thickness scale . Make cer tain you ha v e follo wed the directions in the Operations Section f or T est Running bef ore attempting to mak e these adjust- ments.
G1021Z 15" Planer -29- planer on long stock, use the stoc k retur n rollers on the top of the machine to mov e the material back to the inf eed side of the machine.
-30- G1021Z 15" Planer Crank the handwheel to raise or lo wer the tab le according to the desired workpiece thickness . Make sure the height scale is properly adjusted. The pow er f eed f eatures two f eed rates; 16 FPM and 20 FPM. When r unning the machine, the operator can control the f eed speed by moving the f eed control knob .
G1021Z 15" Planer -31- Once the assembly is complete and the adjust- ments are done to your satisf action, you are ready to test the machine. T urn on the power supply at the main panel. Press the ST AR T b utton. Mak e sure that y our fin- ger is poised on the ST OP button, just in case there is a problem.
-32- G1021Z 15" Planer W ood Characteristics The species of wood, as well as condition, will aff ect planing ability . The harder the wood, the more difficult it will be to plane. We’v e included below , a list of wood characteristics you ma y encounter when planing.
G1021Z 15" Planer -33- SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE Make a habit of inspecting y our planer each time you use it. Check f or the f ollo wing conditions and repair or replace when necessar y: 1. Loose mounting bolts. 2. W orn switch. 3. W orn or damaged cords and plugs.
-34- G1021Z 15" Planer Lubrication The Model G1021Z f eatures f actory-sealed bear- ings. A sealed bear ing requires no lubrication during its lifetime . Should a bear ing f ail, your planer will probably de velop a noticeab le rumble , which will increase when the machine is put under load.
G1021Z 15" Planer -35- Clean and lubricate the chain sprock ets as need- ed. The gearbox oil should be chec k ed bef ore the first use. It is full when oil begins dr ibb ling out of the fill hole. Oil should be replaced y early . Use 80W -90 gear oil in nor mal situations.
