1 1: S AF E T Y I NFORMA TION American Po w er Conversion Corpo ration (APC) is the leading national and international manufac- turer of state-of- the-art uninterru ptible power s upplies , redundant swit ches, power m anageme nt soft- ware, an d related equi pment.
2 In order to maintain compliance with the EMC directive, output cords attached to the UPS should n ot exceed 10 meters in leng th. Pluggable equipment includes a protective earth condu ctor that carries the leakage curren t from the load devices (computer equipment).
3 2: I NST ALLA TION The UPS has a “rack and s tack” design that prov ides two moun ting options. The UPS can be mounte d in a 46.5 cm (19-in ch) equipmen t rack or st acked on a batte ry pack(s ) model SU24RMXLBP2U. Hard w are is provided for either option.
4 S TACKI NG TH E UPS ON A B ATTERY P ACK Note: For rack m ounting, proceed to Mountin g the UP S in a Rack , below . Do not step o n the UPS. The UPS chassi s is not desig ned to sup- port additiona l weight. When stacking the UPS with an external battery pack, position the UPS on top of the 2U battery pack.
5 3. Attach the mounting brackets to the UPS before mounting the UPS in your rack, (below ). Each mounting bracket attaches to the UPS with four s crews (included). Two sets of bracket holes are located on the si des of the UPS. If you are us ing a four-post rack , attach the mounting brackets in the forward position.
6 2. Locate the battery cables tucked on top of the battery . 3. Locate the UPS battery connector jack to the right of the battery tray. 4. To connect the battery cable plug to the battery jack, push the plug into the jack firmly to ensure a tight connection.
7 connection, loosen the screw and conn ect the surge su ppression devi ce ground lead. Tigh ten the screw to secure the lead. • 100V models : In order t o operat e at the fu ll VA rat ing of the 1400VA product , the su pplied 15A plug mu st be replaced w ith a 20A plug .
8 3: O PERA TION S MAR T -UP S F RONT P ANEL O PERATIO N The ON and OFF buttons are u sed to power th e UPS and act as master controls f or the connected equipment. Make sure connected equipment is switched to the ON p osition. The UPS remains on as long as it is attached to utility power.
9 S ELF -T EST Automatic Self-Te st The UPS performs a self-test automatically when turn ed on, and every two we eks thereafter (by def ault). Refer to Us er Conf igur- able Items for details on changing the default interval. Automatic self-test eases maintenance requirements by eliminating the need for periodic m anual self-tes ts.
10 AVR Tr im This LED illuminates to indicate the UPS is compensating for a high utility voltage. AVR Boost This LED illuminates to indicate the UPS is compensating for a low utility voltage. B ATTERY P OWER If the utility power fails, the UPS can pro vide power to the connected equipment from its internal battery for a finite period.
11 S MAR T -UPS R EA R P ANE L 230V m odels 120V/100V m odel s B ASIC C ONNE CTORS Serial Port Power management s oftware and interface k its can be used w ith the UPS. Use only int erface kits supplied or approved by AP C. If us ed, connect the interf ace cable to the 9-pin computer interface port.
12 D EFAULT S ETTI NGS Voltage Sensitivity The UPS d etec ts line vo ltage disto rtio ns (s uch a s spike s, not che s, dip s, and swells) as well as distortions caused by operation with inexpensive fuel-powered gen erators. By default, the UPS reacts to distortion s by transferring to on -battery operation to protect the con nected equipment.
13 O N B ATTERY O PERA TION The Smart-UPS switches to b attery operation automaticall y if the utility power fails. While running on-battery, an intern al alarm sounds (periodic beeps). Pre ss the button (front pane l) to silence the UPS alarm (for the curren t alarm only).

16 5: T RA NSP ORT ING Y OU R S MA RT -UPS Always DISCONNEC T THE B ATTERY before shipp ing in co mpliance with U.S. Departm ent of Transp ortation (DOT ) regulations . The battery m ay remain in the UPS; it does not have to be rem oved. D ISCONNECTING THE B ATTERY FOR T RANSPORT The battery is accessible f rom the fron t of the UPS.
17 6: S T OR A GE AND M AI N T E N AN C E S TORAG E S TORAGE C ONDITIONS Store the UPS covered and positioned as for proper functioning, in a cool, dr y location, with its bat- teries fully charged. Disconn ect any cables connected to th e computer interface port to av oid unnec- es s ary bat tery dr aina ge.
18 R EPL ACING THE B ATTERY M ODULE 1. The plug on the new battery module i s taped to the side of the battery. Remove this tape allo wing the plug and the attached white cord and battery cables to come to the front of the battery.
19 7: T ROUBLESHOOTING Use the chart belo w to solve minor Smart-UPS installation and operation problems. Re fer to the APC web site, www.apc.com , for assistance with com p lex UPS problems. P ROBLEM AND P OSSI BLE C AUSE S OLUTION UPS WILL NOT TURN ON butto n not pus hed.
20 P ROBLEM AND P OSSIB LE C AU S E S OLUTION A LL LED S ARE OF F AND THE UPS IS PLUGGED IN TO A WA LL OUTLET The U P S is shut down and t he battery is discha rged from an extended o utage. None. The U PS will return t o norm al operatio n when the pow er is restored and the battery has a su fficient ch arge.
21 S ERVICE If the UPS requires s er vice do not return it to the dealer. In st ead, follow these s teps : 1. Revi e w the problem s discussed in th e Troubleshooting secti on of this manual to eliminate com- mon probl e ms . 2. Verify that no circuit break ers are tripped.
