1 Introduction The APC Sm art-UPS ® RT is a high- performan ce, uninterrupt ible pow er supply (UPS) th at provides protection for electron ic equipment f rom utility power blackouts, brown outs, sags an d surges.
2 Wiring and Connecting the UPS 5000/6000 VA XLI MODE LS O NLY : H ARDWIRING I NSTRUCT IONS • Wiring must be perform ed by a qual ified el ectrician. • Install a high magnetic 30/32 A utility circuit br eaker. • Adhere to all national and local electrical codes.

4 B ASIC C ONNE CTORS serial com Power management sof tware and interface kits can be used with the UPS. Use only interface ki ts supp lied or a pproved by APC. Any other serial interface cable w ill be inco mpatible with the UPS connector. normal bypass Manual bypass enables t he user to manually put connected eq uipment into bypass m ode.
5 C ONNECTING E QUIPME NT AND P OWER TO TH E UPS 1. Connect equ ipment to the UPS (cables not included for XLJ/XLT/XLTW models). 2. Avoid using exte nsion cords. • 3000 VA XLJ/ XLT/XLTW /XLI and 5 000/6000 VA XL J/XLT/ XLTW m odels : Using a power cord, plug the UPS into a two-pole, three-wi re, grounded receptacle only .
6 O PERA TION Load S MART -U PS RT F RONT D ISPLAY Battery Charge Indicator Description Online The Online LED il luminates when t he UPS is draw ing utility power an d performing double con versi on to supply power to conn ected equipment. On Battery The UPS is supplying battery power to the conn ected equipment.
7 Feature Function Cold Start When there is no utility po wer and the UPS is off, press and hold the button to power up th e UPS and connected equipment.

10 Both Class 2 and SEL V circuits must be isolated from all primary circuitry . Do not connect any circuit to the EPO terminal block unless it can be con firmed that the circuit is Class 2 or SELV. If circuit standard cann ot be confirmed, us e a contact closure switch.
11 5000/60 00 VA models: Terminal Mode is a menu driven interface that enables enhanced configuration of the UPS. Connect the serial cable to the serial port on the back of th e UPS. 1. Open a terminal prog ram. Exam ple: HyperTerminal • From the Desktop, go to Start => Programs => Accessories => Co mmunication => HyperTerminal.
12 M AIN TE N AN C E AN D T RA NSPOR T Replacing the Battery Module This UPS has an easy to replace, h ot-swappable battery m odule. Replacement is a safe procedure, isolated from electrical hazards. You may leave the UPS and connected equi pment on during the procedure.

If bypa ss is t he chosen mode of oper ation, ignore t he illum inated LED. If bypa ss is not the chos en mode of op era tion move t he bypas s swit ch on the back o f the U PS, to the no rmal position.
