Please use the recorder follo wing the guidelines below to protect against possib le HDD f ailure. We recommend that y ou back up y our important recordings onto D VD discs in or der to protect a gainst accidental loss.

14 Connecting to the Aerial Remov e the aerial cable plug from your TV set and inser t it into the aerial socket at the bac k of the recorder . Plug one end of the aerial cable into the TV sock et on the recorder and the other end into the aeri- al input sock et on your TV set.

16 Connecting to an Amplifier Connecting to an amplifier equipped with two c hannel analog stereo or Dolb y Pro Logic ll/ Pro Logic Connect the Left and Right A UDIO OUT jacks on the recorder to the audio left and right in jacks on your amplifier , receiv er , or stereo system, using the audio cables (A).
17 Hookup and Settings Accessory A udio/Video Connections Connecting a P A Y-TV/Canal Plus Decoder Y ou can watch or record P A Y -TV/Canal Plus pro- gr ammes if you connect a decoder (not supplied) to the recorder . Disconnect the recorder’ s mains lead from the mains when connecting the decoder .
18 Connecting to the INPUT 3 or INPUT 4 Jacks Connect the input jacks (A V3, A V4) on the recorder to the audio/video out jacks on y our accessor y compo- nent, using audio/video cables . Note: If you use the S-VIDEO IN jac k on the front panel, the VIDEO IN jack on the front panel is not a vailab le.
19 Hookup and Settings Using the Home Menu F rom the Home Menu screen y ou can access all the Media (HDD , DISC, MEMOR Y CARD) f or pla yback and recording of the recorder . 1. Press HOME to display the Home Men u screen. 2. Use the v / V and ENTER buttons to select a media you w ant.
20 Program Edit Y ou can edit a channel manually (add, delete, name, mov e, etc.). 1. Select [Program Edit] option then press B . 2. Press ENTER while [Edit] is selected. The Program List men u appears. 3. Use v / V to select a PR number then press ENTER.
21 Hookup and Settings A uto Clock Set When Channel auto search is completed the actual Time and Date are also set automatically . If the time in the recorder displa y is not correct, the clock must be set manually . 1. Select [Clock set] option then press B .
22 Progressive Scan Progressiv e Scan Video provides the highest quality pictures with less flick ering. If you are using the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT/ PRO- GRESSIVE SCAN, but are connecting the recorder to a standard (analog) tele vision, set Progressive Scan to [OFF].
23 Hookup and Settings Disc Menu/A udio/Subtitle • [Original]Refers to the original language in which the disc was recorded. • [Other] T o select another language, press number b uttons then ENTER to enter the corresponding 4-digit number according to the language code list in the ref erence chapter (see page 66).
24 Loc k (P arental Control) Settings Rating Some movies contain scenes that ma y not be suitable f or children to view . Many of these discs contain parental control inf or mation that applies to the com- plete disc or to cer tain scenes on the disc.
25 Hookup and Settings DivX ® Registration Code We provide you the DivX ® V OD (Video On Demand) registration code that allows y ou to rent and purchase videos using the DivX ® V OD ser vice. F or more infor- mation, visit www .divx.com/v od. 1. Select [DivX Reg.
26 DV Recording A udio Y ou need to set this if you hav e a camcorder using 32kHz/12-bit sound connected to the front panel D V IN jack. Some digital camcorders hav e two stereo trac ks f or audio . One is recorded at the time of shooting; the other is f or overdub bing after shooting.
27 Hookup and Settings Finalize Finalizing ‘fix es’ the recordings in place so that the disc can be pla yed on a regular D VD play er or com- puter equipped with a suitable D VD-ROM driv e. Finalizing a Video mode disc creates a menu screen f or navigating the disc.
28 Pla ybac k General Explanation of On-Screen Displa y This manual giv es basic instructions for operating the recorder . Some D VDs require specific operation or allow only limited operation during pla yback.

30 Setting CA PLA YBA CK This setting tells the recorder whether or not to auto- matically star t skipping or scanning when a commer- cial group star t point is reached during playbac k. Pe rform the follo wing setting while the recorder is in the stop mode: 1.
31 Playbac k HDD , D VD, DivX ® file or Video CD Playback Setup •T ur n the TV on and select the video input source connected to the recorder . •A udio system: T urn the audio system on and select the input source connected to the recorder . 1. Load your chosen disc in the tra y , with the pla yback side down.
32 Slow Motion 1. Press X (P A USE/STEP) during playbac k. The D VD play er will now go into P A USE mode. 2. Use the m / M (SCAN) to select the required speed. DV D, HDD; 4 steps (forward and bac kward) Video CD; 3 steps (forward only) 3. T o exit Slo w Motion mode, press N (PLA Y).
33 Playbac k Marker Searc h To enter a Marker Y ou can star t pla yback from up to six memorized points. T o enter a marker , press MARKER at the desired point on the disc. The Marker icon appears on the TV screen briefly . Repeat to enter up to six mark- ers.
34 Changing the A udio Channel Press A UDIO then press b / B repeatedly dur ing play- back to hear a diff erent audio channel (STEREO , LEFT or RIGHT). With D VD-RW discs recorded in VR mode and HDD that hav e both main and Bilingual audio channels, y ou can s witch among Main (L), Sub (R), or Main+sub (L+R) by pressing A UDIO.
35 Playbac k Pla ying a DivX ® Movie File The recorder can pla y Divx ® files on HDD , CD-R/R W , D VD-RAM or D VD±R/R W discs. Bef ore playing DivX ® files, read “About DivX ® movie files” on page 36. Note: This recorder cannot pla y back the DivX ® file(s) in the Memor y Card.
36 About DivX ® movie files DivX ® disc compatibility with this recorder is limit- ed as follo ws: •A v ailable resolution size of the DivX ® file is under 720x576 (W x H) pix el. • This recorder cannot pla y back the DivX ® file(s) in the Memor y Card.
37 Playbac k Pla ying an A udio CD or MP3/WMA file The recorder can pla y audio CDs and MP3/WMA files on HDD , Memor y Card, CD-ROM, D VD±R/RW or CD-R/R W discs. Before pla ying MP3/WMA files, read “About MP3/WMA audio files” on page 38. 1. Press HOME.
38 Repeat Au dio CDs - Repeat T rack/All/Off Press REPEA T to select a desired repeat mode. • TRA CK: repeats the current track. • ALL: repeats all the tracks on the disc. • OFF (No displa y): does not play repeatedly . MP3/WMA - Repeat T rack/Folder/Off Press REPEA T to select a desired repeat mode.
39 Playbac k Pr ogram Playbac k with A udio CD/MP3/WMA Program Pla yback enab les you to mak e custom pla ylists of Audio CD or MP3/WMA trac ks. Progr ams can contain up to 99 A udio CD tracks or 256 MP3/WMA files. 1. Use v / V to select a track/file (or f older) on the A udio CD or Music menu.
40 Viewing a JPEG File The recorder can pla y JPEG files on the CD-R/RW , DV D±R/R W , D VD-RAM, HDD , or Memor y Card (D V -DS161E only). Bef ore playing JPEG recordings , read “About JPEG image files” on page 41. 1. Press HOME. The HOME menu appears.
41 Playbac k View Slide Sho ws 1. Select [Slide Show] option on the Photo menu (Ref er to “Photo menu options” on page 40). 2. Press ENTER. The Slide Show menu appears . 3. Use b / B / v / V to set the options. [Object] option: • [Selected] Views slide sho w only selected files.
42 Editing a MP3/WMA, JPEG, DivX ® file These descriptions are MP3 file’ s operation f or exam- ple, other kind’ s files are operated same wa y . Notes: • The MP3/WMA, and DivX ® files on the disc or HDD cannot be copied or mov ed to Memor y Card.
43 Playbac k Copying a file(s) to another media or f older Y ou can copy a file(s)/f older(s) to another media or fo l der. 1. Select a file you wish to cop y on the menu. Y ou can select all files and folders on the menu b y pressing CLEAR button. T o cancel the selections, press CLEAR again.
44 Recor ding About D VD recor ding Notes: • This recorder cannot make recordings on CD-R or CD-R W discs. • Our company tak es no responsibility for recording f ailure due to power outages, def ectiv e discs, or damage to the Recorder . •F inger prints and small scratches on a disc can aff ect playbac k and/or recording performance.
45 Recording Notes for recor ding time • When recording a TV broadcast, if the reception is poor or the picture contains interf erence, the record- ing times ma y be shor ter . • The recording time av ailable ma y decrease if y ou heavily edit a disc.
46 Time Shift Do not miss a scene from a live broadcast. If the tele- phone rings while you are watching y our fa v or ite liv e broadcast, just press “TIMESHIFT” and “ X (P A USE/STEP)” before ans wering the phone. The timeshift function will be activated and the broadcast is then recorded f or later viewing.
47 Recording Basic Recor ding from a TV F ollow the instructions below to record a TV progr am. Recording star ts immediately and continues until the disc is full or you stop the recording. Note: When recording on D VD: Y ou must load a recordable disc f or D VD recording.
48 Timer Recor ding This recorder can be programmed to record up to 16 programs within a period of 1 month. For unattended recording, the timer needs to know the channels to be recorded, the star ting and ending time. Note: If you use a completely b lank disc for timer recording, y ou m ust format the disc before starting timer record- ing.
49 Recording VIDEO Plus+ ® System This system makes prog ramming timer recordings ve ry simple. Most TV guides pub lish VIDEO Plus+ pro- gr amming numbers with their progr am details. If you w ant to mak e a timer recording of a program, y ou just input the corresponding VIDEO Plus+ programming n umber .
50 Chec king Timer Recording Details Programming can be chec ked whene v er the recorder is turned on. Press TIMER REC twice. • Use v / V to select a timer recording. • Press ENTER to edit the selected program. Timer Record menu appears. • Press CLEAR to delete the selected program from the Timer Record List.
51 Recording Recor ding from D V Input Before D V dubbing Y ou can connect a D V -equipped camcorder to this recorder using a single D V cable f or input and output of audio , video , data and control signals. • This recorder is only compatible with D V -format (D VC-SD , D V25) camcorders.
52 Sim ultaneous recording and pla yback Playbac k another title during recor ding Pla yback and recording f or both D VD and built in hard disk drive (HDD) are completely independent. F or e xample, you can record to either the D VD or HDD source and pla y back video from the other source at the same time.
53 Title List and Editing Title List and Editing Title List and Chapter List Menu Overview Using the Title List menu, y ou can search for recorded titles and edit them.
54 1. Menu options: T o display menu option, select a title or chapter then press ENTER. The options dis- pla yed diff er depending on the disc type. • [Combine] Combines two titles or chapters into one (page 59, 60). • [Delete] Deletes the title or chapter (page 57).
55 Title List and Editing Original and Pla ylist Editing (VR Mode) Is editing a D VD like editing a video tape? No . When you edit a video tape you need one video deck to pla y the original tape and another to record the edits. With D VD , y ou edit by making a ‘Playlist’ of what to pla y and when to play it.
56 Making a New Pla ylist Use this function to add an Original title or chapter to the Pla ylist. When you do this, the whole title is put into the Pla ylist (you can delete bits you don’t need later — see Deleting an Original or Playlist title/chap- ter on page 57).
57 Title List and Editing Deleting an Original or Pla ylist Title/Chapter When you er ase a title or chapter from the Playlist menu, y ou only remove it from the Pla ylist; the title/chapter remains in the Original menu.
58 Naming a Title Y ou can name Or iginal and Playlist titles independent- ly . Names can be up to 32 characters long. 1. Choose the title you w ant to name on the Title List menu, then press ENTER. The menu options appear on the left side of the menu.
59 Title List and Editing Sor t This function allows y ou to access show listings organized b y Date, Title , or Categor y on the Title List- HDD menu. So you can find title y ou want to watch easily . 1. Choose any title on the Title List-HDD men u, then press ENTER.
60 Divide Use this command to split a title up into two ne w titles. 1. On the Title List menu, select a title y ou want to divide then press ENTER. The menu options appear on the left side of the screen. 2. Select [Divide] option. Example: Title List (HDD) 3.

63 Dubbing Dubbing fr om HDD to D VD 1. On the Title List-HDD menu, select a title y ou want to dub then press ENTER. The menu options appears on the left side of the screen. 2. Use v / V to select [Dubbing] option then press ENTER. Dubbing menu appears .
64 One T ouch Copy (HDD to D VD) The One T ouch Copy f eature copies the currently pla ying title from the HDD to D VD . The whole title is copied, regardless of where in the title you start copy- ing. The recorder copies at the maximum speed possi- bl e.
