VIDEO CASSETTE TAPE INFORMATION This VCR will operate w ith any cassette that has the VHS mark. For best results, w e recommend the u se of high -quality tapes. Do n ot use poor quality or dam aged tapes. PRECAUTIONS • Avoid m oisture. Moisture conde nsation m ay occur on the tape i f it is moved from a cold pl ace to a warm pl ace or vice versa.
OPERATING CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS NOTE: • We do not recomm end the use of uni versal remote controls. Not all of th e function s may be controlled with a univers a l remot e cont r ol. If y o u decide to use a univ ersal rem ote control w ith this unit, please be aw are that the code nu mber given may not operate this unit.

PREPARATION FOR USE ANTENNA/CABLE CONNECTIONS For some of the most com mon ty pes of connections , please follow th e draw ings below . Use only one connection . For any further complex connections, please cont act your local dealer or other qualif ied persons.

RECORDING HINTS 1 ) Be sure to check that the "PWR." and the "VCR" indicators are both on . 2) Turn on th e T V and Ca ble Box. 3) Set the chann el to be recorded on the VCR. 4) Set th e T V and Cable Box to channel 3 or 4. 5) Set the CH3/CH4 switch on the back of th e VCR to match the channel set on th e T V.

INSTALLING THE BATTERIES 1 ) Open the battery com partment cover by pressing the cover on the remote un it in the direction of the arrow . 2) Insert 2 "AA" penlight batteries into the battery co mpartm ent in the direction indicated by th e polarity (+/-) m arkings.
4 Select 'ENGLISH" o r "ESP ANO L" Select "ENGLISH" o r " ESPANOL"=Spanish by usin g the PLAY/ or STOP/ button. Then, press the F.FWD/ button. NOTE: T his functi o n effec t s only the la ngua ge on the scree n menu and not the aud io so ur ce.
AUTO CLOCK SETTING • Conf irm that the an tenna conn ections are correct and the CHA NNEL PRESET completes first. • Use the remote control for this procedure. • Be sure to ch eck that the "PWR." and the "VCR" indicators are both on.
4 Select the PBS channel First, press the PLAY/ or STOP/ button to point to " MANUAL " . Then, press the F.FWD/ button. Next, pres s the num ber buttons or PLAY/ or STOP/ button to select the PBS channel.
3 Select "M ANUAL" If [ON] appears bes ide " MANUAL", press the F.FWD/ button. • If it is n o t, press the PLAY/ or STOP/ button to point to "MANUAL". Then, press the F.FWD/ button tw ice. • When y ou press the F.FWD/ butto n during st eps [ 4 ] to [8] , you may m o ve for ward to the next st e p.
4 Select the month Pres s the PL AY/ or STOP/ button until the desired month appears. (Exam p le: March → 03) Then, press the F.FWD/ button. CLOCK SET MONTH DAY YEAR 03 /-- ---- HOUR MINUTE AM/PM -- : -- -- 5 Select the day Pres s the PL AY/ or STOP/ button until the desired day appears.
9 Select "AM" or "PM" Pres s the PL AY/ or STOP/ button to point to " AM" o r "PM" (Exam p le: P M) CLOCK SET MONTH DAY YEAR 03/01 MON1999 HOUR MINUTE AM/PM 05 : 40 PM AM → PM 10 Start the clock Press the RESE T /EXIT or F.
3 Set the "D.S.T." (Daylight-Savin g s Tim e) to [ON] Pre ss t he PL AY / or STOP/ button to point to "D.S.T." . Then, press the F.
TO CANCEL THE DAYLIGHT-SAVINGS TIME Repeat steps [1] to [3]. Then , press the F.FWD/ button so that [OFF] appears on th e menu. Press th e RESET/EXIT b utton to return to TV mode. TO DELETE OR ADD CHANNELS The channels you no long er receive or seldom watch can be deleted from the m emory.
5 Delete it fro m mem ory Press the F.FW D/ or REW/ button so that "D ELETE" f lashes on the T V screen. • T o delete another c hannel, repeat s teps [4] and [5] • If you pres s F.FWD/ or REW / but t on again , the ch annel i s memorized agai n.
PLAYBACK NORMAL PLAYBACK • Be sure to check that the "PWR." and the "VCR" indicators are bo th on. • Turn on the TV and set the T V to channel 3 or 4. Now set the CH3/CH4 switch on the back of the VCR to match the channel selected on the TV.
TRACKING ADJUSTMENT • T racking adjustm ent will be set autom atically (D ig ital T racking function) w hen you star t play back. Howe ver when pla ying pre- recorde d tapes or ta pes recorded on units othe r than your ow n, noise lines (blac k and w hite streaks) may appear on th e p layback pictu r e.
SPECIAL PLAYBACK • Use the rem ote control for the follow ing procedure. • Be sure to check t h at the "P WR." and the "VCR" i ndicat ors are bo th on . • T urn on the TV and set the TV channel to 3 or 4. Now set the CH3/CH 4 switc h on the back of the VCR to matc h the chann el selected o n the TV .
INDEX SEARCH This feature prov ides a m ethod of in dexing a recordings s tarting poin t so that it can be easily retu rned to in either f ast forw ard or rewind m ode. • The index m ark will be made autom atically wh en the REC button is pressed. It will also be marked at the start i ng point of T i mer rec o rdi ng and I RT .
TO VIEW AT NORMAL SPEED Press the PLAY button. The Quick-Find is cancelled. • A v id eo cassette mu st b e insert in the VCR f or this function to w ork. • This fun c tio n will not operate in the recording m od e. • When y ou want to cancel the Qu ick-Find wh ile in progress, press the STOP button.
RECORDING · Please refer to the connection you a re using , through pages 1 0, 11, o r 1 2 on "ANTENNA/CABLE CONNECTIONS" before continuing . • Be sure to ch eck that the "PWR." and the "VCR" indicators are both on. • Turn on the TV and set the TV to channel 3 or 4.
RECORDING ONE PROGRAM AND VIEWI NG ANOTHER You can record on e program while vi ew ing an other. To start recording, f ollow steps [1] to [3] u nder "VIEWING AND RECORDING T HE SAME PROGRAM". To select the channel y ou want to v iew at the TV, follow the steps below.
Recording s tarts imm ediately wh en the REC/IRT button is pres sed, wheth er you are w atching the sam e or a differen t channel. • When th e REC/IRT button is pressed 18 times, the VCR return s to the norm al reco rd ing m od e. • To stop the IRT o peration, press the STOP button on the VCR or on the remote control.
TIMER RECORDING AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING You m ay set the VCR to start and en d a recording w hile you are aw ay. You can set sev en programs to record on specific day s, daily or w eekly w ithin a 1 y ear period.

TO CORRECT OR CANCEL AN AUTOMATIC TIMER PROGRAM 1) Turn the pow er on. 2) Press th e MENU button. The details of the you r program appear on th e T V screen.

ON SCREEN DISPLAY NOTE: VCR pow er and the "VCR" indi cator m ust be on . • To check the Count, Clock and Channel number, press the DISPLA Y button on the rem o te co ntrol. Each tim e you press the DISPLA Y button , TV screen will chan ge as shown below.
DIGITAL DISPLAY 1. PWR. (power) indicator- Ligh ts up w hen the pow er is turned on. 2. indicator- Lights up when a tim er recording or an IRT has been set. Flashes if a tape is not in serted in the VCR even if y ou set a timer. 3. Cassette ind icator- Ligh ts up wh en there is a tape in the VCR.
CONTROLLING YOUR TV O R CABLE CONVERTER WITH THE VCR'S REMOTE This Hitachi remote control can be used w ith your TV as well as th e VCR, as long as y our TV comes with a re mot e contr ol. This fe ature comes in ha nd y--you don't have to j uggle two re motes.
REMOTE CONTROL OF THE TV PROGRAMMING THE REMOTE CONTROL OF THE TV 1 Turn on the TV Turn on the TV (any channel is ok ay). 2 Program the rem ote control Aim the VCR's remtoe control at y our TV set. Hold down th e T V button (not the VCR/TV button) while you press the nu mber correspondin g to your bran d of televis ion as s hown i n the chart.
CONTROLLING THE TV Once programm ed, the VCR's remote control is ready to control the TV. NOTE : Be a ware that no t all of your T V's functi ons may work even tho ugh the re mote co ntro l is cor rec tly program med.
MAINTENANCE SERVICING Should y our VCR become in operative, do not try to correct the problem by y ourself. There are no user- serviceable parts in side. T urn off, un plug the pow er cord, and take the unit to ou r Authorized Service Center for se r vicing.
CABLE CHANNEL DESIGNATIONS If y ou subscribe to cable TV, th e chann els are display ed as 1-125. Cable companies often design ate channels with letters or letter-num b er co mbination s. Please check w ith your local cable com pany. The follow ing is a chart of common cable channel des ignations.
