Recommended papers for photo printing If you want the best print quality, HP recommends using HP pape rs that are specifical ly designed for t he type of project you are printing . Depending on your cou ntry/region , some of these pa pers might not be a vailable.

Change print settings You can change print setti ngs (such as paper size or type) from an ap plication or th e printer driver.
To change defa ult settings for all future jobs (Windows ) 1. Click Start , then click Printers or Printers and Faxes . - Or - Click Start , click Control Panel , and t hen double-click Printers . NOTE: If prompted, en ter the computer a dministrator's passw ord.
To print on special or custom -sized medi a (Mac OS X) 1. Load the appropriat e media. For more inf ormation, see Load media. 2. On the File menu, click Page Setup . NOTE: Some Mac OS X 10.5 applicat ions do not have a Page Setup m enu, it is included in th e Print menu.
3. From the applicat ion, open the printer driver: a . Click File , and then click Print . b . Click Properti es, Setup , or Pr eference s . 4. Select the print set tings shortcut you w ant to use. 5. Change any other prin t settings, and the n click OK .
To print a Web page 1. Make sure that you have paper loaded in the in put tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web bro wser, click Print . TIP: For best resu lts, select HP Smart Web Printing from the File menu. A check mark appears when it is selected. The Print dialog box appears.

NOTE: For a list of system requirements for the embedded Web server, see Embedded Web serve r specifications. Some settings migh t be restricted by the requirement for a p assword. You can open and use t he embedded Web server w ithout being conn ected to the Internet; however, some features will not be availabl e.
You can open the embedd ed Web server by using these methods: • Web browser: In a supp orted Web browse r on your computer, type t he IP address or hostname that has bee n assigned to the device. If you need to call HP, it i s often useful t o print the Printer Stat us page before calling. 1. Printer Information: Shows device info rmation (such as the p roduct name, mode l number, serial number, and firmware version n umber), and the num ber of pages printed from t he trays.
Understand the network configuration status r eport The network confi guration status report sho ws the network setti ngs for the device. 1. General Info rmation: Shows info rmation abo ut the current.
Configure the device (Windows) You can connect the devi ce directly to a compu ter, or you can share the device among other users on a network. NOTE: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or high er must be install ed on the co mputer system to run the installation program.
NOTE: If you connect th e device to a compu ter running Wi ndows 7 before i nstalling the device soft ware, you wil l need to use the Sta rter CD provided with the printer to install the HP so ftware. To connect the de vice (Windows XP and Wi ndows Vista) 1.
Network connection If the device ha s network capabilit y, it can be shared in a n etwork environment by connecting it dire ctly to the ne twork. This type of connection offers the ability to manage the device using the embedded Web server from any com puter on the ne twork.
A client computer can conne ct to the device in the fo llowing ways: • In the Printers fo lder, double-click th e Add Printer i con and follo w the instructi ons for a network instal lation. Fo r more information, see Install the p rinter driver using Add Printer.
To share the device on a loca lly shared netwo rk When you connect the device directly, you can sha re it with other co mputers using a simple form of n etworking know n as locally shared n etworking. Use this configu ration only in small groups or wh en usage is low.
If you are having proble ms such as: • Printer not foun d when installi ng HP software • Unable to prin t, print job stuck in queu e or printer goes offl ine • Unable to see p rinter status on your comput er The firewall mi ght be preventing your HP de vice from notifying computer s on your network where it can be fo und.
The ports are used for the following function s: Printing • UDP ports: 427, 137, 161 • TCP port: 9100 Photo card uplo ad • UDP ports: 137, 138, 427 • TCP port: 139 Scanning • UDP port: 427 .

• Turn off the HP Print er by pressing the Power but ton located on the product. Wait until the Power light turns off before unplugging the power cord or turning off a power strip.
Replace the ink cartridge s NOTE: For information on recycling used ink supplie s, see HP inkjet supp lies recycling program. If you do not already have repl acement ink cartridges for the HP Prin ter, see Order printing supplies online. 5. Twist the orange cap t o snap it off. NOTE: Make sure the p lastic tab is en tirely removed and t hat the label is slightly torn, revealing th e vent channel. 6. Using the colored shaped icons for he lp, slide the ink cartri dge into the empt y slot until it clicks into pl ace and is seated firmly in t he slot.
Make sure that you insert th e ink cartridg e into the slot that has th e same shaped icon and color as the one you ar e installing. 7. Repeat steps 3 throug h 6 for each i nk cartridge you are repl acing.
If you are concerned about providing this anonymous in formation, you ca n make this information in accessible by turning off th e memory chip's abilit y to collect t he product's usage info.
To evaluate the Print Q uality Diagnostic Page This section in cludes the follow ing topics: • Ink Levels • Good color bars • Ragged, irregularly streaked, or faded bars • Regular white str ea.
▲ Look at the Ink L evel indicators in Line 21. If any of the bar level indicat ors are low, you may need to replace th at ink cartridge. NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide esti mates for planning purposes only.
Example of Bad Color Bars The top black bar is ragged on one end. If any of the bars are ra gged, irregularly streaked, or faded, follow these steps: 1. Make sure the ink cartridges have ink. 2. Remove the cartridge co rresponding to the streaked bar a nd make sure it is properl y vented.
Regular white str eaks in the ba rs If any of the color bars sho w regular white streaks, follow these step s: White streaks The print quality bars have white streaks in them. 1. If the Print Quality D iagnostic report re ads PHA TTOE = 0 , alig n the prin ter.
Large Black F ont Text Look at the large-fon t text above the color blocks. I ABCDEFG abcdefg The type should be sharp and clear. If th e type is jagged, try alig ning the printer. If th ere are streaks or smears of ink, clea n the printhea d. Example of good Large-Font Type The letters are sharp and clear - the prin ter is operating correctly.
Examples of a bad alignment pattern The lines are jagged - align the printer. If that does not work, contac t HP. If you see no defects If you do not see any defects on the p rint quality report, then t he printing syst em is working correctly.
• The device is set as th e current or default p rinter. For Windows, set it as the default in the Printers folder. For Mac OS X, set it as the default in the Printer Setup Utility (Mac OS X (v10.4). Fo r Mac OS X (v10.5) open System Preferences , select Print & Fax , and then select the device from th e Default Printer drop-down li st.
Blank or pa rtial page p rinted Check the ink level s The ink cartridge s may be running low on ink. Clean the printhead Complete the prin thead cleaning proc edure. For more i nformation, see C lean the printhead. The printhead may ne ed to be cleaned if t he printer was turned off im properly.
Placement of the te xt or graphics is wrong Check how the med ia is loaded Make sure the media widt h and length guides fit snugly aga inst the edges of th e stack of media, and make su re the tray is not overl oaded. For more info rmation, see Lo ad media.
Envelopes pri nt incorrectly Try the following sol utions to resolve th e issue. Solutions are listed in order, wi th the most likely solution first. If the first solutio n does not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the i ssue is resolved.
• Solution 4: Check th e printer driver stat us • Solution 5: Wai t until the product completes the current operation • Solution 6: Re move all cancelled pr int jobs from the queue • Solution .
If this did not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 5: Wait until the produc t completes the curr ent operation Solution: If the product is pe rforming another ta sk your print job will be delayed until the product comp letes the current t ask.
Cause: The print carriage had stalled. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 9: Check the co nnection from the pr oduct to your computer Solution: Check the conn ection from the produ ct to your computer. Veri fy that the USB cable is securely plugged into the U SB port on the back of the product.
Nothing happ ens when I try to prin t Try the following sol utions to resolve th e issue. Solutions are listed in order, wi th the most likely solution first. If the first solutio n does not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the i ssue is resolved.
Solution 4: Check the printer driver status Solution: The printer driver status might have ch anged to eithe r offline or stop printing . To check the prin ter driver stat us ▲ In the HP Solution Center, click the Status tab. Cause: The status of the print er driver had change d.
Solution 8: Make sure the print ca rriage can move freely Solution: Unplug the po wer cable if it is not alre ady unplugged. Ch eck to see if the print carriage will move freely from one si de of the printer to the oth er. Do not try to force it to move if it is hun g up on something.
The margins a re not printing as expected Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first so lution does not solve th e problem, continue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
Text or graphics are cut off at the edge of the page Try the following sol utions to resolve th e issue. Solutions are listed in order, wi th the most likely solution first. If the first solutio n does not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the i ssue is resolved.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 3 : Load the stac k of papers correctly Solution: If the paper is misfeeding, i t could cause parts of the document to cut off. Remove the stack of pa per from the inpu t tray, and then reload the paper.
Solution 2: Load paper in the in put tray Solution: If the product has only a fe w sheets remaining , load more paper in the input tray. If there i s plenty of paper in th e input tray, remove th e paper, tap the stack of paper against a flat surface, and relo ad the paper into the input tray.
Wrong, inaccurate, or bl eeding colors If your printout has o ne of the foll owing print qual ity problems, try the sol utions in this section for help. • Colors look w rong For example, gr een was replaced wi th blue in your printout. • Colors run int o each other, or look like t hey are smeared on th e page.
If this did not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 3: Chec k the paper type Solution: HP recommends that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for th e product. Always make sure the p aper you are printin g on is flat.
Solution 5: Check the print settings Solution: Check the pri nt settings. • Check the print settings to see if the color settings are i ncorrect. For example, check to see if the do cument is set to print in grayscale.
After cleaning the printhead, print a prin t quality report. Evaluate the print quality report to see i f the print qual ity problem still exis ts. For more information, see: • Clean the pri nthead • Print and evaluate a p rint quality report Cause: The print head needed to be cleaned.
Solution 2: Check th e ink levels Solution: Check the estimated ink leve ls in the ink cartr idges. NOTE: Ink level alerts an d indicators provide es timates for planning purposes only. When you receive a l ow-ink alerts, conside r having a replacemen t cartridge available to avoid possi ble printing de lays.
After cleaning the printhead, print a prin t quality report. Evaluate the print quality report to see i f the print qual ity problem still exis ts. For more information, see: • Clean the pri nthead • Print and evaluate a p rint quality report Cause: The print head needed to be cleaned.
Solution 2: Use a higher pr int quality setting Solution: Check the print qu ality setting and m ake sure it is not set t oo low. Print the image wi th a high print qu ality setting, such as Best or Max imum dpi . Cause: The print quality setting wa s set too low.
If this did not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 3: Check the in k levels Solution: Check the estima te d ink levels in the ink cartridges.
If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, and then click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support. Cause: There was a problem with th e printhead. Printouts are fade d or have dull colo rs Try the followi ng solutions if the colo rs in your printout are no t as bright and intense as you expected.
NOTE: Ink level alerts and indicators provide estimates for pl anning purposes only. When you rece ive a low-ink ale rt, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoi d possible printin g delays. You do not need t o replace the in k cartridges until print qual ity becomes unacceptable .
• Solution 3 : Print the i mage in a smaller size • Solution 4: Align the printhead Solution 1: Check the print settings Solution: Check the pri nt settings. • Check the p aper type set ting to make sure it matches the type of paper loaded in the input tra y.
Printouts have vertical stre aks Vertical Streaks are streaks tha t are parallel to the directi on that the pap er moved through the de vice. Solution: HP recommends that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for th e product. Always make sure the p aper you are printin g on is flat.
If you removed the rear door to clear a pape r jam, replace it. Gently push the door forward unti l it snaps into place. Cause: The rear door was not securely i nstalled. Ink streaks on the ba ck of the paper Try the followi ng solutions if ther e is smeared ink on the ba ck of your printout.
Solution 1: Rest art the product Solution: Turn off the produ ct, and then unplug t he power cord. Plug the powe r cord back in, and then press the Power but ton to turn on the pro duct. Cause: The product expe rienced an error. If this did not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 5: Check for a paper jam Solution: Check for pape r debris in the front of the device. Remove any debris you find. CAUTION: Trying to clear a paper j am from the fron t of the device ca n damage the print mechanism.
Solution 2: Use True Type or OpenType fonts Solution: Use TrueType or Open Type fonts to ensure th at the product is able to print smooth f onts. When selecting a fo nt, look for the True Type or OpenType icon. TrueType icon OpenType icon Cause: The font was a custom size.
The produ ct prints sl owly Try the followi ng solutions if the prod uct is printing very slow ly. • Solution 1: Use a lower print quali ty setting • Solution 2: Che ck the ink levels • Solution 3: Co ntact HP support Solution 1: Us e a lower print quality setting Solution: Check the p rint quality sett ing.

To clean the printhead fr om the Toolbox (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP Utility icon in the Dock. NOTE: If HP Utility is not in the Dock, click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the menu bar, type HP Utility in the box, and then cli ck the HP Util ity entry.
To align the printhe ad from the embedded Web server 1. Load letter, A4, or legal unused plai n white paper into t he main input tray. 2. Click the Settings tab, click Device Services in the left pane, select Align Printer from the drop-down list in the Print Qualit y sectio n, and then clic k Run Diagnostic .
Pages are sk ewing • Make sure the med ia loaded in the tr ays is aligned to the pap er guides. If need ed, pull out the trays fro m the device and relo ad the media prope rly, making sure that t he paper guides a re properly ali gned. • Load media int o the device only when i t is not printing.
Check the de vice IP address • To check the IP address of the device from the control panel, print the net work configuration page. For more information, see Understand the network configura tion status report. • Ping the device u sing the IP address from th e command prompt.
Problems connecti ng to a wired network • If the Network li ght on the device cont rol panel does not turn o n, make sure that all of the “General net work troubleshoot ing” conditions are met.
Make sure the ink c artridges are pro perly installed 1. Make sure the product is turn ed on. 2. Open the ink cartridge acce ss door by lifting f rom the front right of the product , until the door locks into place. NOTE: Wait until th e print carriage st ops moving before proceeding.
Software installation sugg estions Check the comp uter system • Make sure that your computer is runn ing one of the suppor ted operating systems. • Make sure that the comput er meets at least the mi nimum system requirements. • In the Window s device manager, make sure that th e USB drivers have not been disabled.
◦ Compare the I P address listed in the dialog box and m ake sure it mat ches the IP address listed on the netw ork configuration page. If the IP addre sses are diffe rent, change the IP address in th e dialog box to match th e address on the network configuration p age.
Clear a jam in th e device To clear a jam 1. Remove all media f rom the output tray. CAUTION: Trying to clear a paper j am from the fron t of the device ca n damage the print mechanism. Always access and clear paper jams t hrough the rear access panel.
• Make sure the outpu t tray is not overly full. • Make sure the media guid e are adjusted snugly agai nst the media, but do no t crinkle or bend the me dia.
