Printer software The printing-sys tem software is includ ed with the pr inter. See the getting started guide for installatio n instructions. The printing system includes softwa re for end us ers and network admini str ators, and printer drivers for access to the printer features and communication with the computer.

Software for networks HP Web Jetadmin HP Web Jetadmin is a bro wser-based management tool for network-conn ecte d printers within your intranet. It should be in stalled only on the network administrator’ s computer. To download a current version of HP Web Jetadmin and for the latest list of supported host systems, visit www.
Print-media specifications For optimum results, us e conventional 75 g/m 2 to 90 g/m 2 (20 to 24 lb) photocopy paper. Verify tha t the paper is of good quality and is free of cuts, nicks, tears, spots, loose particles, dust, wrinkles, curls, or bent edges.

Selecting print media You can use many types of paper and other print media with this printer. Before purchasing any p aper or specialized forms in quantity, verify that your pape r supplier has obtained and und erstands the print-media requirements that ar e specified in the HP LaserJet Printer Family Print Media Specification Guide .
Printing and storage enviro nment Ideally, the printing and med ia-stor age environment should be at or near room temperature, and not too dry or too humid. Reme mber that paper is hygro scopic; it absor bs and loses moistu re rapidly. Heat causes the moisture in paper to evaporate, while cold causes it to condense on the sheet s.
Printing on special media Transparencies ● Handle transparen cies by the ed ges. Oils from your fi ngers ca n cause print-quality problems. ● Use only overhead tr ansparencies recommended for use in this printer. Hewlett-Packard recommends using HP Color LaserJet Transparencies with this printer.
If your software does not automatically format an envelope, specify L andscape for page orientatio n in the software pro gram. Use the guidelines in t he table t hat follows to set margins for return and destination addresses on Commercial #10 or DL envelopes.
NOTE For information about how to load le tterhead and preprinted forms, see Loadin g special media . Recycled paper This printer supports the use o f recycled paper. Rec ycled paper must meet the same specifications as standard paper. See the HP LaserJe t Printer Family Print Me dia Specificatio n Guide .
2 Control panel This section provides information about the control panel fe atures. ● Understanding control-panel features ● Using the cont rol-panel menus ● Using the printer control pa nel in.
Understanding control-panel features The printer has the following lights and buttons on the control panel: 1 Left arrow button ( < ): Press this button to naviga te through the menus or to decrease a value that appear s on the display. NOTE Press the left and right arrow buttons simultaneou sly to print a demo page.

Using the control-panel menus To use the menus 1. Press OK to open the menu s. 2. Press < or > to navigate through the listings. 3. Press OK to select the appropriate option. An asterisk (*) appears next to the active selection. 4. Press X to exit the menu without saving any ch anges.
Reports menu Use the Reports menu to print repo rts that provide information about the printer. Menu item Description Demo page Prints a color page that demonstrates print quality. Menu structure Prints a map of the control-panel-menu layout. The active settings for each menu are listed.
System Setup menu Use this menu to establish b a sic printer settings. The System Setup menu has several sub-menus. Each is described in the following table . Using the printer control pa nel in shared environments If your printer is shared with other users, adhere to the followin g guidelines to ensure successful printer operation: ● Consult your system administrator before maki ng changes to control-pa nel settings .
3 I/O configuration This chapter describes how to connect th e printer to a computer or a network. ● USB configurat ion ● Network configuration (HP Color LaserJet 2700n only) ENWW 27.
USB configuration All printer models suppor t USB connections. The USB port is on the rig ht side of the printer. Connecting the USB cable Plug the USB cable i nto the printer.
Network configuration (HP Color LaserJet 2700n only) You might need to configure certain network para meters on th e printer. You c an configure th ese parameters from th e printer control panel, th e embedde d Web server, or, for Windows operating systems, from the HP ToolboxFX software.
Using the embedded Web ser ver or the HP ToolboxFX You can use the embed ded Web server (EWS) or the HP ToolboxFX to view or change your IP configuration settin gs. To access the embedded Web server, type th e IP address for the printer in the address line of th e browser.
4. Use the < or the > button to select Manual , and then press OK . 5. Press the > button to increase the valu e for the first section of the IP address. Pre ss the < button to decrease the value. When the value is correct, press OK to a ccept the value and move the cursor to the next field.
Supported network protocols The printer supp orts the TCP/IP network protocol, the most widely u s ed and accepted netwo rking protocol. Many networ king services utilize this protoc ol. For more in formation, see TCP/IP . The follo wing table lists the supported ne tworking services and protocols.
TCP/IP Similar to a common language that people use to co mmunicate with each othe r, TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol /Internet Prot ocol) is a suite of prot ocols designed to de fine the way c omputers and other devices commu nicate with ea ch other over a network.
Dynamic Host Configurat ion Protocol (DHCP) DHCP allows a grou p of devices to use a set of IP addresses that are main tained by a DHCP server. The device or host se nds a request to th e server, an d if an IP address is av ailabl e, the server assigns it to that device.
4 Printing tasks This chapter describes how to perform basic printing tasks: ● Controlling print jobs ● Configuring tr ays ● Using featur es in the Window s printer driv er ● Using featur es i.
Controlling print jobs In Windows, three setting s affect how the printer dr iver pulls media when y ou send a print job. The Source , Ty pe , and Size settings appear in the Page Setup , Print , or Print Properties dialog boxe s in most software programs.
Priority for print settings Changes to print settings are prioritized depending on where the changes are made: NOTE The names of commands a n d dialog boxes might vary d epending on your software program. ● Page Setup dialog bo x : Cl ick Page Setup or a similar command on the File menu of the progra m you are working in to open this dialog box.
Configuring trays You can configure the printer trays by type and size . Load different m edia in the printer trays and then request media b y type or size in the so ftware program. The following instructions are for con figuring the trays at the printer control panel.
CAUTION Avoid adding print media to tray 1 while th e printer is printing , or jams can occur. 1. Open tr ay 1. 2. Slide the output bin exten sion out from the bin. 3. Slide out the tray e x tender and, if ne cessa ry, open the additional tray extender.
4. Slide the width guides to t he si ze of the print media. 5. Place print medi a into the tray w ith the side to be printed down, and the top, short ed ge in first. Load an enve lope with the side to be printed do wn , the stamp a rea farthest from th e printer, and the short edge toward the printer.
Loading tray 2 CAUTION To avoid jams, never open or remove a tray during printing. 1. Pull tray 2 out of the pr inter and remove an y media. 2. Slide the output bin exten sion out from the bin. 3. Adjust the length guide until the arrow points to the si ze that you are loading.
4. Adjust the side width guides u ntil the arrow on the right width guide points to the size that you are loading. 5. Load the media i nto the tray. NOTE If you are printing on special media such as labels, le tterhead, or envelopes, see Loading special med ia for complete informati on about how to orient the media a nd configure the printer.
7. Slide the tray back int o the printer. Loading optional tray 3 1. Pull the tray out of the printer and remove any media. 2. Raise the outp ut bin extension.
3. Adjust the length guide until the arrow points to the size that you are loading. 4. Adjust the side width guides u ntil the arrow on the right width guide points to the size that you are loading.
6. Make sure that the stack of media is flat in the tray at all four corners, and keep it below the heig ht tabs. 7. Slide the tray back int o the printer.
Loading special media The following table provides guidelines fo r loading sp ecial media and configuring the prin ter driver. Use the correct media-type setting in th e printer driver to obtain the best print quality. For some types of media, the printer red uces the print speed.
Using features in the Windows printer driver When you print from a software program, many of t he product features are av ailable from the p rinter driver. For comp lete informatio n about the f eatures that are ava ilable in the printer d river, see the printer- driver Help.
Using watermarks A watermark is a notice, such as "Confidential," that is printed in the background o f each page of a document. 1. Open the printer dr iver (see Opening the printer drivers ). 2. From the Effects tab, click the Watermarks drop-down list.
6. Click Save . 7. Click Close . The name that you sa ved appears in the paper-size l ist for future use. Using different paper and printing covers Follow these instructio ns for printing a first page that is different fro m other pages in the print job.
Setting the color options Options on the Color tab control how colors are interpreted and printed from software programs. You can choose either Automatic or Manual color options. ● Select Autom atic to optimize the color and halfton e settings for text, graphics, and photographs.
Using the Services tab If the product is conn ected to a network, use the Se rvices tab to obtain product and supply-status information. Click the Device and Supplies status icon to open the Device Status page of the HP Embedded Web Serve r.
Using features in the Macintosh printer driver When you print from a soft ware program, many of the printer features are av a ilable from the printer driver. For complete info rmation about the features that are available in the printer driver, see the printe r- driver Help.
Printing multiple pages on one sheet of paper You can print more than one page on a single sheet of paper. This feat ure provides a cost-effective w ay to print draft pages. 1. Open the printer driver (see Opening the printer drivers ). 2. Click the Layout pop-up menu.
Using 2-sided (duplex) printing To print a document on both sides, go to the printer and reinsert the paper manually afte r the first side has printed. NOTE Damaged or reuse d media can cause jams and should no t be used. Do not print on both sides of labe ls or transpar encies.
6. Go to the printer. When the Load Tray 1 prompt appears, remo ve an y blank paper from tray 1. Remove the printed stack fro m the output bin and in sert the stack into tray 1 with the prin ted side up, and the top edg e toward the printer. NOTE Do not discard any blank sheets from the printed stack.
Stopping a print request You can stop a print req uest by using the printer co ntrol panel or using your software program. For instructions on how to stop a print request from a computer on a network, see the onlin e Help for the specific network software.
5 Managing the printer This chapter describes how to manage the prin ter: ● Using printer information page s ● Using the embedded Web server ● Using the HP ToolboxFX ● Using Macintos h Configu.
Using printer information pages From the printer control panel, you can print pages that give details about the printer and its current configuration . The table below pr ovides the pr ocedures for printing the information pages. Page description How to print th e page Menu structure Shows the control-panel menus and available settings.
Page descript ion How to print the page PS font list Shows whic h PS fonts are cu rrently installed in the printer. 1. Press OK . 2. Press > to highlight Reports , and then press OK . 3. Press > to highlight PS font list , and then press OK . NOTE The font lists also show which f onts are resident on an optional flash DIMM.
Using the embedded Web server When the printer is connected to the network, the e mbedded Web server is automatically available. You can open the emb edded Web server from Windows 95 and later. NOTE When the printer is di rectly connected to a computer, use the HP ToolboxFX to view th e printer status.
Embedded Web server sections The table be low describes the basic screens of the embedded We b server. Tab or section Description Status tab Provides printer, status, and configuration information. ● Device Status : Shows the printer status and shows the life remaining of HP supplies, with 0% indicating th at a supply is empty.
Tab or section Description Settings tab Provides the ability to configure the printer from your computer. ● Device Information : Allows you to name the printer and assign an asset number to it. Enter the name for the primar y contac t who will receive information about the printer.
Using the HP ToolboxFX The HP ToolboxFX is a program that you can use to complete the following tasks: ● Check the printer status. ● Configure the printer setting s. ● Configure pop-u p-alert messages. ● View troubleshooting in formation. ● View online documentation .
Status The Status folder contains links to the following main pages: ● Device status . View prin ter status information. This page indicate s printer conditions such as a jam or an empty tray. After yo u correct a p rinter problem, click Refresh status to update the printer status.
Alerts The Alerts fol der contains links to the following main pa ges: ● Set up Status Alerts . Set up the printer to se nd you pop-up alerts for certain events, such as low toner levels. ● Set up E-mail Alerts . Set up the printer to sen d you e-mail alert mess ages for certain eve nts, such as low toner levels.
Device settings The Syst em Settings folder contains links to the following main pages: ● Device informatio n . View information about the printer, such as the printer description and a contact person. ● Paper handling . Co nfigure trays or change the printer paper-handling settings, such as defaul t paper size and defau lt paper type.
Paper handling Use the HP ToolboxFX p aper-handling options to configure your d efault settings. These are the same options that are available on th e menus on the control panel.
Print quality Use the HP ToolboxFX print-quality options to improv e the appearance of your print jobs. These are the same options that are available on the contro l panel. For more information, see Using the co ntrol-panel menus . The following options are provid ed for controlling print quality: Color Calibration ● Power On Calibrati on .
System setup Use the HP ToolboxFX system settings options to co nfigure miscell aneous print settings. These se ttings are not avail able on the control panel. NOTE You must click Apply before your cha nges take effect. Service During the printing process, paper, ton e r and dust pa rticles can accumulate inside the prin ter.
Using Macintosh Configure Device Macintosh Configure Device is a Web-based program that you can use to configure and maintain the printer from a comput er running Mac OS X V10. 3 or V10.4. You can u se Macintosh Conf igure Device when the printer is directly connected to the comput er or when it is connecte d to the network.

Using color The printer provide s automatic colo r features that generate excellent color results. Carefully desig ned and tested color ta bles provide smooth, accurate color re ndition of all p rintable colors. The printers also provid e sophisticated tools for the experienced professional.
Managing color Setting colo r options to Automatic typically produces the best possible print quality for co lor documents. However, you sometimes might want to print a color document in gra yscale (black and white) or change one of the printer color options.
Setting description Setting options Neutral Gra ys The Neutr al Grays setting determines the method for creating gray colors used in text, graphics, and photographs. ● Black Only generates neutral colo rs (grays and black) by using only black toner.
5. Press < or > to select on of the following options ● Enable color ● Disable c olor 6. Press OK to save the setting. The network administrator can monitor col or usage fo r a specific HP Color LaserJet 270 0 printer by printing a color usag e job log.
Matching colors The process of matching printer output color to your computer screen i s complex, because printers and computer monitors use differen t methods of pro ducing color.
Most process sample boo ks have a note about what process stan dards were used to print the sample book: SW OP, EURO, or DIC. In most cases, fo r opt imal color matching, sele ct the corresponding ink emulation from the p rinter menu. If you cann ot iden tify the process standard, use SWOP ink emulation.

Managing supplies Using, storing, and monitoring print cartridges can help ensure quality printer outp ut. Supplies life The life of th e print cartridge depen ds on usage pattern s and the amount of to ner that print jobs require. For example, w hen printing text at 5% coverage, a b lack HP print ca rtridge lasts an av erage of 5,0 00 pages.
For more precise levels, follow the instructions in the table below to print a supplies status page. Device Procedure Printer control panel 1. Press OK . 2. Press > to hig hligh t Reports , and then pr ess OK . 3. Press > to hig hligh t Supplies status , and then press OK .
Print-cartridge authentication The printer autom atically authenticates the print cart ridges when the cartridges are in serted into the printer. During authent ication, the printer will let you know wh ether a cartridge is a genuine HP print cartridge.
Replacing supplies and parts Carefully follow the gu idelines in this section when replaci ng printer supplies. Supply replacem ent guidelines To facilitate the replacement of supplies, keep the following guidelin es in mind when setting up the printer.
2. Remove the used print cartridge from the printer. 3. Remove the new print cartridge from the ba g. Place the used print cartridge in the b ag for recycling. 4. Grasp both sides o f the print cartridge and distri bute the toner by gently rocking the print cartridge from front to back.
5. Remove the orange shipping locks and the shipping tape attached to the lef t shipping lock from the new print cartridge. Discard the shipping t ape and shipping locks accord ing to local regulations. 6. Align the print cartridge with the tra cks inside th e printer, and using the handles, insert the print cartridge until it is firmly seated.
Cleaning the printer During the printing process, pa per, toner, and dust particles can accu mulate inside the printer. Over time, this buildup can cause print- quality problems, such as toner sp ecks or smearing. This printer has a cleaning mode that ca n correct and prevent these types of problems.

Basic troubleshooting checklist If you are experiencin g problems with the printer, use th e following chec klist to identify the cause of the problem: ● Is the printer connected to power? ● Is th.
Control-panel messages The control-pane l messages indicate the current printe r status. In addition, alert, warnin g, and critical error messages indicate si tuations that might require action.

2. Grasp the jammed sheet b y both corners and pull. 3. Place the media stack in tray 1. 4. Confirm that the media gu ides are against the media without bending it.
Jam in tray 2 or opt ional tray 3 1. If the optional tray 3 is install ed, pull it out and place it on a flat surface. If the jammed sheet is visible, r emove it. 2. If the sheet is not visible, check inside the printer at the top of the tray open ing.
5. If the sheet is not visible, check inside the printe r at the top of the tray opening. Remove any jammed media. 6. Replace tray 2 and op tional tray 3.
Jam in print pa per path For this control-panel messages, look in two areas fo r jams. First, check the fr ont door area fo r a jam. Next, starting with step 6, check the top cover area. 1. Open the fro nt door. CAUTION Do not place anything on th e transfer un it.
3. Locate the green re gistration-plate tabs th at are belo w the bottom print cartridge. 4. Press the tabs, and then lift the registration plate. Remove any jammed media, and then return the registration plate to its closed positi on. NOTE If the shee t tears, make sure that all fragments are removed before resuming printing.
6. Open the top cove r. 7. If the jammed sheet is visible, remo ve it and then close the top cover. 8. If the sheet is no t visible, use the power switch to turn off the printer.
9. Place your thumbs on the fuser latches, squ eeze the latches, and pull up on the fuser to remove it. 10. On the fuser, lift the shutter door. CAUTION Do not open the shutter door while the fuser is in the printer. 11. Remove any jammed sheets. NOTE If the shee t tears, make sure that all fragments are removed before you resume printing.
12. Hold the fuser with your thumbs on the latches, and then p ush both sides of the fuser into the printer. Press the fuser down until it clicks into place. 13. Close the top cover and th en turn on the pr inter. Jam in output bin For this control-panel message, look in two places for jams.
3. Open the top cover. 4. If the jammed sheet i s visible, remove it and the n close the top cover. 5. If the sheet is not visibl e, use the power switch to turn off the printer.
6. Place your thumbs on the fuser latches, squeez e the latches, and pull up on the fuser to remove it. 7. On the fuser, lift the shut ter door. CAUTION Do not open the shutter door while the fuser is in the printer. 8. Remove any jammed sheets. NOTE If the sheet tea rs, make sure that all fragments are removed b e fore you resume printing.
9. Hold the fuser with your thumbs on the l atches, and then push both sides of the fuser in to the printer. Press the fuser down until it clicks into place.
Paper-handling problems Use only media that meets the s pecifications outlined in the HP LaserJet Printer Family Print Media Specification Guide . For ordering information, see Supplies and accessories . For media specifications for this prin ter, see Print-media specifications .
Media does not fe ed automatically Cause Solution Manual feed is selected in the software program. Load a sheet of media into tray 1 and press OK . The tray is empty. Load media into the tray. Media from a previous jam has not been completely removed.
Transparencies or glossy paper will not feed Cause Solution Media in another tray is the same size as the transparencies or glossy paper, and the printer is defaulting to the o ther tray. Make sure that the tray that contains the transparencies or glossy paper is selected in the software program or printer driver.

Printer response problems The control-panel display is blank Cause Solution The printer power switch is in the off position. Verify that the printer is on. Fans might run while the printer is in standby mode (off). The printer memory DIMMs are defective or installed incorrectly.
The printer is on but is not receiving da ta Cause Solution The interface cable is not co rrect for this co nfiguration. Select the correct interface cable for your configuration. See USB configuration . The interface cable is not securely connected to both the printer and the computer.

Color-printing problems Printing black instead of color Cause Solution Grayscale is selected in the software program or printer driver. Inconsistent colors print af ter installing a print cartridge Cause Solution The printer might need calibration. Calibrate the printer. See Calibrating the printer . The print cartridge might be a refille d cartridge. Use a genuine HP print cartridge.

Macintosh proble ms Solving problems with Mac OS X The printer driver is not listed in th e Print Center or Printer Setup Utility. Cause Solution The printer software might not have been installed or was installed incorrectly.
The printer driver does not automatically set up your selected printer in the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility. Cause Solution you are using. Reinstall the software. Se e the getting started guide for instructions . The interface cable might be defective or of poor quality.
When connected with a USB cable, the printe r does not appear in the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility after the driver is s elected. Cause Solution ● Ensure that you do not have too many USB devices dra wing power from the chain.

Using the HP ToolboxFX to tro ubleshoot print-quali ty problems From the HP Tool boxFX software you can print a page that helps identify whi ch print cartridge is causing the problem. The print-qu ality trouble shooting page prints five bands of color, which are divided into four overlapping sections.
Calibrating the printer Calibration is a printer functio n that optimizes print quality. If you experience any print-quality problems, calibrate the printer. 1. Press OK . 2. Press > to highlight System Setup , and then press OK . 3. Press > to highlight Print quality , and th en press OK .
Network problems (HP Colo r LaserJet 2700n only) Check the following items to verify that the printer is communicating with the network. Before you b egin this troubleshooting procedure, print a c onfiguration page. See Using printer information pa ges .

E Working with memory Printer memory The printer has one dual inli ne memory module (DIM M) slot. Use the DIMM slot to upgrade the printer with the following items: ● More printer memo ry (DIMMs are available in 64, 128, and 256 MB).
Installing memory DIMMs You can install more memory fo r the printer, and you can also install a font DIMM to a llow the printer to print characters for lan guages such as Chinese or the Cyrillic alphabet.
3. Place the formatter boa rd on a clean, flat, gro unded surface. To replace a DIMM that is currently installed, sp read the latches apart on each side of the DIMM slot, lift the DIMM up at an angle, and pull it out. 4. Remove the new DIMM from the antistatic package , and the n locate the alignment notch on th e bottom edge of the DIMM.
6. Push down on the DIMM until both latches engage the DIMM. NOTE If you have difficulty inserting the DIMM, ma ke sure that the notch on the bo ttom of the DIMM is aligned with th e bar in the slot. If the DIMM sti ll does not go in, make sure th at you are using the correct DIMM type.
5. Click OK . 6. Go to Checking DIMM installati on . Checking DIMM installation Check that the DIMMs are installed correctly and working. To check DIMM installation 1. Turn the printer on. Check that the printer is in the Ready state after it has gone through th e startup sequence.
