Safety precautions The following precau tions ensure t he proper use of the printer and prevent the printe r from being damaged. Follow these precautions at all times. ● Use the power supply voltage specified on the na me plate. Avoid overloading the printer's electrical outlet with multiple devi ces.

3. Click Install . The printer drivers, HP Easy Printer Ca re, and HP Color Center are install ed. 4. Follow the instructions on your screen to set up the printer. Connect directly to a computer (Mac OS) You can connect your printer direct ly to a computer wi thout going thro ugh a network, by using the printer's built-in USB 2.0 socket. 1. Make sure the pri n ter is either turned off, or disconnected from th e computer.
12. The following screen displ ays information about you r printer's installatio n , where the name of the printer can be modifie d . Make any changes you wish to make, and click Continue . 13. Your printer is now connected. In the Pri n ter Queue Created screen, click Quit to exit, or Create New Queue i f you want to connect anothe r printer.

Introduction This chapter describes various printe r settings that the printer administrator may wish to control as soon as a new printer is assembled and ready for use.
In each case, you will se e the following options: ● In order : pag es are nested in the order in which they are sent to the printer. Th e nested pages are printed as soon as on e of three conditions is met : ● The next p age will not fit on the same row as the other pages al ready nested.
You must also ensure that the e-mail server ha s b een configured. To configure the e-mail server using the Embedded Web Server, select Setup > E-mail serve r , and fill in the following fi elds: ● SMTP server : the IP address of the outgoing mail server (SMTP) that will process all e-mail messages from the printer.
Access to the Networking page is protected by a di ffe rent password (the administrator's password). To reset the admin istrator's password, yo u need to reset the whole input/o utput configuration. Using th e front panel, select the Con nectivity menu icon , then select your co nnection method (e.

Turn the printer on and off TIP: The printer is Ene rgy Star complian t and can be left po wered on witho ut wasting energy. Leaving it on improves response time and over all syst em reliability. Wh en the printer has not been used for a certain period o f time (30 minutes by default), it saves power by go ing into sleep mode.
When the printer is powered back on, it takes about three minutes to i nitialize and check and prep are the printheads. Preparing the printheads ta kes about one minute and 15 seconds. Ho wever, if the printer has been off for six weeks or more, p reparing the p rintheads could take u p to 45 minutes.
Access the Embedded Web Server The Embedded We b Server enables you to manage yo ur printer remotely using an ordinary Web browser running on any computer.
To change the lang uage, you must change your Web browser's languag e setting. For example, in Internet Explorer ve rsion 6, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options , Languages . Then ensure that the lang uage you want is at the top of the list in the dialog box.

You can change the grap hic language setting from the front panel. Press th e Menu key to return to the main menu the select the Setup menu icon , then Printer prefere nces > Select graphic language . Select th e desired option and press the OK key to set the value.

General advice CAUTION : Before starting a paper l oading process, ensure yo u have enough room aroun d the printer, both in front and behi nd. CAUTION : Make sure the printer wheels are lock ed (the brake lever is pressed down) to prevent the printer from moving.
1. Remove the spindle from th e printer one end at a time. WARNING! Do not insert your fingers into th e spindle supports durin g the removal process. 2. The spindle h as a stop at each en d to keep the ro ll in position. The blu e stop can be removed to mount a new roll; it slides along the spindle to hold rol ls of different widths.
4. If the roll is long; rest the spindle horizontally on a table and lo ad the roll on the table. TIP: You may need two people to handle a larg e roll. 5. Slide the new roll onto the spindle. Make sure the pa per type is or iented as shown. If it is not, remove the roll, turn it 180 degree s and slide it back on to the sp indle.
1. Remove the black end of the spindle fr om the printer, then the blue end. CAUTION : Be sure to remove the black en d first. Removing the blue end first could damage the black en d. WARNING! Do not insert your fingers into th e spindle supports durin g the removal process.
3. If your roll has a three-inch cardboard core, ensure that the core adaptors supplie d with the prin ter have been installed . 4. If the roll is long; rest the spindle horizontally on a table and lo ad the roll on the table. TIP: You may need two people to handle a larg e roll.
If you are a regular user o f different paper types, you can change rolls more qu ickly if you preload rolls of different paper types on differ ent spindles. Extra spindles are available for purch ase, see Accessories on pa ge 141 . Load a roll into the 24-inch printer There are two ways to load a roll.
3. With both hands, push the spindle into both ro ll holders at the same time. The spindle snaps into place. 4. If the edge of the roll is not straight or torn (s ometimes due to ta pe used to hold end of the roll), pull paper slightly beyon d the cutting groove a nd use a cutter t o cut a straight edge.
6. Roll the spindle i nto the feeder until you fee l resistance. The printer d etects the paper and feeds it automaticall y into the printer. 7. Once the paper i s fed into the printe r, the front-panel display a sks if you are loading a roll or a sheet.
NOTE: If you have an unexpected issue at any stage of the paper loading p r ocess, see Th e paper cannot be loaded successfully on pa ge 148 . TIP: When prints fall in to the basket, they can be torn or get ink mar ks from oth er prints. To avoid this, catch your prints as they are cut from the roll and do not stack prints in the basket.
5. Select your paper category and type. TIP: If you have lo aded a paper typ e whose name does no t appear in the paper list, see The paper type is not in th e driver on page 150 . 6. Continue with step five of th e easy loading process, skipping steps eight and nine.

5. Insert the edge of the pa per into the feeder. WARNING! Do not push your fingers inside the printer's paper path. 6. Roll the spindle i nto the feeder until you fee l resistance. The printer d etects the paper and feeds it automaticall y into the printer.
10. Look at the front panel; you may find some instructions there. 11. When the roll is aligned, the front panel displays the Ready message and t he printer is ready to print. If the roll is not aligned , follow the instructions on the front-pane l display.
5. Select your paper category and type. TIP: If you have lo aded a paper typ e whose name does no t appear in the paper list, see The paper type is not in th e driver on page 150 . 6. Continue with step five of th e easy loading process, skipping steps eight and nine.
2. Select Unload pape r . 3. Continue from step two of the Unload paper key process. Roll out of paper procedure If the end of the paper is no longer attach ed to the roll use the following procedure. 1. If you have already started th e unload process, press the Cance l key on the fron t panel to cancel that procedure.
Easy loading procedure 1. Standing in front of the printer, o pen the s heet tray. If the sheet is long, extend the tray. TIP: If the tray is difficult to open, try opening from behind the printer. NOTE: The extension s are seven cm and snap in place.
5. Enter your paper category and type. TIP: If you have loaded a p aper type whose na me does not appear in the paper list, see The paper type is n ot in the driver on page 150 . 6. The printer checks th e alignment and measures the sheet. NOTE: Depending on the length of the sheet, it feeds out the front of the printer.
3. Select Paper load . 4. Select Load sh eet . CAUTION : If you sel ect roll, the sheet will not load. 5. Select your paper category and type. TIP: If you have lo aded a paper typ e whose name does no t appear in the paper list, see The paper type is not in th e driver on page 150 .
Unload paper key procedure 1. Press the Unload paper key on the front panel. 2. The sheet unloads out the front of th e printer, either catch it man ually or allow it to fall in the basket. Paper menu procedure You can also unload a sheet from the paper menu.
Paper profiles Each supported p aper type has its ow n characteristics. Fo r optimum print- quality, the prin ter changes the way it prints on each different paper type. For example, some may n eed more ink and som e may require a longer dryin g time.
NOTE: Photo and coated paper requires careful handling, see The print is scuffed or scratched on page 167 . Change the drying time You may wish to change the drying time setting to suit special printing conditions such as multiple prints where time is of higher import ance or when you need to be sure ink i s dry before hand ling.
TIP: If the printer is waiting to nest more pages, you ca n cancel the waiting time and print the available pages immediate ly by pressing the Form feed and cut key .

Create a print job In order to print somet hing, you must send it to the prin ter. This constitutes a pr int job, which is entered into the printer' s print queue. There are two main ways of sen ding a print job to th e printer: ● To print directly from a prog ra m, use the program's Print command as usual .
If you need to specify printing settings, go to the Job settings section and select the options you need. Each option has explanatory text on the right, so tha t you can understand the behavio r of each setting. Remember that, if you leave th e setting as Default , the setting saved in the job will be used.
NOTE: The paper size specified here sho uld be the paper size i n which the document was created. It is possible to rescale the d ocument to a different size for p rinting. See Rescale a print on page 64 . ● In the Windows driv er dialog: select the Paper/Quality tab, then Document Size .
NOTE: Under Mac OS, the ava ilable margins options depend on the paper size selected in the Page Setup dialog. Fo r instance, for borderless prin ting you must select a paper size name that includes th e words “no margins”.
TIP: Check at least the se ttings that you can see in the Printing Shor tcuts tab: the document size, orientation , etc. The Factory Def aults shortcut conta ins the printe r's default setting s. When you click on it, it sets all options to their default values.
If you are printing to a single sheet, you mu st ensu re that the image can actuall y fit onto th e sheet, otherwise the image will be clipped. Change the treatment of overlapping lines NOTE: This topic appl ies only when printing an HP-GL/2 job. The merge option controls th e overlapping lin es in an image.
Print a draft You can specify fast draft-quality printing in the following ways: ● In the Windows driv er dialog: go to the Paper/Quality tab and look at the Print Quality section. Move the print-qualit y slider to the extreme left ('Speed').
NOTE: If the print quality is set from your computer, it overrides the print-quality setting in the front panel. If you have a high -resolution image If your image has a re solution greater than the r.
● In the Mac OS Page Se tup dialog (T1100ps): select a paper size name that includes the words “no margi ns”. Then, in the Print dialog, select Finishi ng > Layout > Border less . ● On the Embedded Web Server's Submit Job page: select Advanced settings > Paper > Layout/Margins > Borderless .
Use paper economically Here are some recommendations for ma king economical use of paper: ● If you are printing relatively small images or do cume nt pages, you ca n use nesting to print th em side by side instead o f one after another. See Nest jobs to save roll paper on page 69 .
What pages can be nested? All pages can be n ested, unless they are so large that two of the m cannot fit side by side on the roll, or unless there are too many of them to fit into the re maining length of the ro ll. A single group of nested pages cannot be split between two rolls.
● Leave the printer perm anently turned on so that it can maintain the printheads in good condition automatically. This regular p rinthead maintenance us es a small amo unt of ink. However, if it is not done, the printer ma y need to use much more ink later to restore the health of the printh eads.

Introduction HP Designjet T1100 printe rs have been engineered with ad vanced hardware an d software features to ensure predictable and d ependable results. ● Color calibration for consistent colors. ● One gray and two black i n ks provide neutral grays on all paper types.
You can check the co lor calibration status of the curre ntly loaded paper at any time by pressing the View loaded paper ke y on the front pa nel. The stat us may be one of the following: ● PENDING: the paper ha s not been calibrate d.
Color management options The aim of color manageme nt is to reproduce colors as accurately as poss ible on all devices: so that, when you print an image, you see very simila r colors as when you view the same image on your monitor.
NOTE: This option is a vailable only when printing an HP-GL/2, PostScript , or PDF job. It will work correctly only when printi ng on plai n, co ated, or heavyweight coated paper. ● In the Windows HP-GL/2 or PostScrip t driver dialog: select the Color tab, then Printer Managed C olors , then select Printer Emulation from the Source Profile list.
The Reset button resto res each slider to its de fault central position. Printing in grayscale You can adjust th e gray balance of your print in similar ways un der Windows and Mac OS: ● In the Windows driv er dialog: select the Color tab, ensure that the Advanced Colo r Adjustments box is checked, then press the Settings button beside it.
To use HP Professional PANTO NE Emulation, all you have t o do is to t urn it on. In fact, i t is normally on by default. ● In the Wind ows PostSc ript drive r dialog: go to the Color tab and select HP Pro fessional PANTONE Emulation . ● In the Mac OS Print dial og: go to the Color Options panel and select HP Professional PANTONE Emulation .
● Euroscale Uncoated 2 uses spec ifications designed to produ ce quality sepa rations using Euroscale inks under the foll owing printing condit ions: 260% total area of ink coverage, positive plate, uncoated white offset stock.
T1100 and T110 0ps options ● Color/Gra yscale : you can choose to print in color, in sha des of gray, or in pure black and white . ● Default RGB source profile : you can choose from a selection of RGB source pro files recognized by the printer. ● Printer emulation : you can choose to emulate a different HP Design jet printer.
Color management from the front panel You can color-calibrat e the loaded pap er type from the fron t panel by selecting the Image Qu ality Maintenance menu icon , then Calibrate color .
TIP: If you have old HP-GL/2 or PostScript files made for a different HP Designjet printer, you can send them to the p r inter and use the fr ont panel to turn on the appropriate emulation mode.

Print a draft for revision with the correct scale This section demonstrates how to print a draft for revi sion with the co rrect scale from Adobe Acrobat. Using Adobe Acrobat 1. In the Acrobat window, bring the mou se cursor to the bottom left corner of the screen to check the plot size.
3. In order to keep the scale, set Page Scal ing to None (which is not the default se tting). 4. Press the Properties button a nd then select the Paper/Quality tab. 5. Choose what ever Document Siz e and Print Quality you want to use. If you want to define a new custom paper size, press the Custom button.
6. Select the Features tab, and then Autorotate . 7. Click OK , and check that the print preview in the Print dialog bo x seems correct. Print a project This section demonstrates how to print a project from Autodesk Design Review, Au toCAD, and the printer's Embedded Web Server.
2. Press the Next button. 3. Select the files or folders that you want to print, select Use HP Instant Printing , and click Next . 4. Select your printer and pape r size, then click OK . Using Windows Explorer to prin t Autodesk Design Review files 1.
2. Select your printer and paper size, then click OK . Using AutoCAD 1. The AutoCAD w indow show s the Model tab followed by a tab for ea ch layout. Normally one of the layouts is printed rather than the model .
3. You can see further options by pressing the circular button in the lower right corner of the window. NOTE: The Quality optio n here does not refer to the final print quality but to the quality o f AutoCAD viewport objects that are sen t for printing.
5. Select the Device and Doc ument Settings tab, and press the Custom Properties button . 6. Select the Paper/Quality tab, then select the paper type that you intend to use. 7. Select the print quali t y (your own choice between spe ed and quality of printing).
8. Select Show preview before pr inting . 9. If you intend to print on roll paper, you must de cide where the printer should cut the paper. Press the Margin s/Layout button.
11. Select the Features tab, then select the Autorotate and Crop lines options. Autorotation can he lp to avoid wasting paper, and the cr op lines will show you where to cut th e paper after printing. 12. Press the OK button and save your con f iguration changes to a PC3 file.
Using the Embedded Web Server to submit fi les From HP Easy Printer Care or the Embedded Web Serve r, select Job Cent er > Submit Job . You will see the window below. Press the Add files button to choose th e files from your comp uter that you wa nt to print.
This setting will apply to jobs that do no t contai n any printer emulatio n setting saved in the job. Using clip contents by margins You can select this margins option from Advance d settings > Paper > Layout/Margins > Print with margins > Layout > Clip contents by margins .
5. Select the Device and Document Setting s tab, and press the Custom Properties button. 6. Select the Paper/Quality tab, then select the pa per type that you intend to use. 7. Select the print quality (your own cho ice between speed and quality of printing).
8. Select Show previe w before prin ting . 9. If you intend to print on roll paper, you must decide where the p r inter should cut the paper. Press the Margins/Layout button.
11. If you are using photo or glossy paper , you can select Borderless printing. 12. Select the Features tab, then select the Autorota te and Crop lines options. Autorotation can help to avoid wasting paper, and the crop lines will sh ow you where to cut th e paper after printing.
14. When you have pr essed the OK button, the printer w ill construct a print previe w. Using Adobe Photoshop 1. Select File > Page Setup , select your print er, and click OK .
2. Choose from the available pape r sizes. If you do no t find the paper size that yo u intend to use, sele ct Printer > Properties > Paper/ Quality > Custom > Paper Size . Enter the width, the length, and the name of your custom paper size.

6. Press the Margins/Layout bu tton. In this example you can select Borderless because you have already selected a photo paper (thi s option is only enabled with photo and glossy papers). The default image enlarge ment method is Automatically by printer .
Using PowerPoint 1. Select File > Print , then selec t the Name of your printer. 2. Select Properties > Featu res > Pri nt document on to scale the document to a particular size . 3. Select the Paper/Quality tab, then s elect Paper Source a nd Pape r Type .
4. Select Margi ns/Lay out , then select Clip content s by margins to keep the size. Using Project 1. Select File > Page Setup > Print . 2. Select your printer's name, th en Close .
3. Select Page Setup , and choose the Paper Size you want. 4. Select Options to go to the printer driver. The default options in the Paper/Quality tab are probably suitable: Paper Source : Automatically Selected and Paper Type : Any . 5. Select Features > Print document on to scale the document to a particular size.
Using Excel 1. Select File > Page Setup > Print . Select your printe r's name, then click OK . 2. Select File > Page Setup , and choose the Paper Size you want.
4. Select the Paper/Quality tab, where you can sel ect Paper Type , Paper Source , and Print Quality . 5. Select Features > Print document on to scale the document to a particular size.

Job queue page You can manage y our printer's job queue from HP Easy Printer Care (Windows) or HP Printer Utility (Mac OS), see Access HP Easy Printer Care (Windows) or HP Printer Utility (Mac OS) on page 29 , or the printer's Embedded Web Server, see Acce ss the Embedded Web Server on page 30 .
NOTE: Do not send a job for preview with more th an 64 pages, this may cause the driver softwar e to crash . Job preview is available once the job is processed . To access th e preview page, click the magni fying glass icon, which appears in the Pre view column on the job queue page.
However, you can also manage the queue from the fr ont panel. To do so, select the Job manage ment menu icon , t hen Job queu e , where you can see a list of the jobs in the queue.
Job status messages These are the possible job status messag es, approx imately in the order in which th ey may be seen: ● Receiving : the printer is receiving the job from the computer ● Waiting .

About the ink cartridges Ink cartridges store the ink and are connected to th e printheads, which distribute the ink on the paper. Your 24-inch printer co mes with one 130 ml matte bla ck ink cartridge and five 69 ml ink cartridges. Your 44-inch printer comes with six 130 ml ink cartridges.
Remove an ink cartridge There are two occasion s when you need to remove an ink cartrid ge. ● The ink cartridge is very low and you want to repl ace it with a full cartridge for un attended printing (you can use up the remaining ink in the first cartridge at a more convenient time).
4. Pull the cartridge straight up. NOTE: Avoid touching the end of the cartridge that is inserted into t he printer, as there may be ink on the connec tion. NOTE: Avoid storing partially used ink cartridges. 5. The front-panel display id entifies the missing ink cartridge.
4. Push the cartridge into the slot until it snaps into position. You should hear a b eep and see confirmation that the ca rtri dge has been inserted. If you have difficulty, see Cannot insert an ink cartridge on page 178 . 5. When all cartridges have been inserted, close the cover.
Check the printh ead status The printer automatically checks and services the printheads after ea ch print. Follow the steps below to get more informatio n on your printheads. 1. Press the Menu key to return to th e main menu and select the Ink menu icon , then Printhead information .
CAUTION: Prin thead replacement must b e performed with the printer powered on. 1. Press the Menu key t o retur n to the ma in menu and select the Ink menu i con , then Replace printheads .
6. Push the handle ba ck to raise the lid. 7. This gives you access to the printheads. 8. To remove a printhead , lift up the b lue handle. 9. Using the bl ue handle, use ste a dy force to d isengage the printh ead.
10. Pull the blue hand le upward until the printhea d is released from th e carriage. CAUTION : Do not pull ab ruptly because this can d amage the printhead. 11. The front-panel display identifies the missing printhead . Insert a printhead 1. Remove the or ange protective caps by pulling them do wn.
3. Insert the new printhead into its correct slot in the carriage. CAUTION: Insert the printhead slowly and vertically, straig ht down. It may be damaged if you insert it too fast, or at an angle, or if you rota te it as you inser t it. 4. Push down as indica ted by the arro w shown below.
6. Ensure the end of th e blue handle catch es the wire loop on the near side of the carria ge. 7. Lower the hand le to rest on the ca rriage cover. When all the printhe ads have been inserted correct ly and ar e accepted by th e printer, the p rinter beeps.

Check printer status You can check the current status o f the printer in various wa ys: ● If you start HP Easy Printer Care under Windows or HP Printer Utility under Mac OS, and select your printer, you see a page o f information describing the status of the p rinter and its paper and ink supplies.
4. Lift the ink cartridge cover on the left-hand side of the p r inter. 5. Press the button beh ind the ink cartrid ges to release the cove r of the left-han d end of the prin ter.
7. Unscrew and remov e the cutter stop usin g the TORX PLUS screwdriver prov ided with the new cutter. The screw is capt ive and will not fall out. 8. Remove the old cutter. 9. Take the new cutter from the m aintenance kit and move the plunger at the top slowly back and forth within its housing to check that it moves f reely.
10. Slide the new cutter into position on the cutter rail. The two wheels on the bottom of the cutter sho uld engage the central ridge on the cu tter rail, and the two bush ing guides should fit into the groove i n the upper part of the cutter rail. Check that the cutter runs smoothly up and down the rail.
11. Fit the cutter sto p onto the end of the cutter rail, holdin g it there with one hand while yo u tighten the screw with the screwdriver in your other hand. 12. Put the left end cover back on the printer, aligning th e protrusions with the holes in the printer.
Maintain the ink cartridges During the normal li fetime of a cartridg e, no spec ific maintenance is required. However, in order to maintain the best print quality, replace a cartridge wh en it reaches its expiration date. The printer's front panel notifies you when any ca rtridge reaches its expiration date.
TIP: Because preparing and p urging the printheads uses both time and ink, yo u are strongly recommended to leav e the printer always on or in sle ep mode, whenever possible, to maintain the health of th e printheads. In both cases, the prin ter wakes up from time to time to maintain the printheads.
When you see the message, yo u should contact HP Support (see Contact HP Support on page 196 ) and request the main tenance kit. Thr ee of the kits are installed by service eng ineers only; the fourth consists of a replace ment cutter, which you can install yourself (see Replace the cutter on page 132 ).
NOTE: If you choose to erase the whole hard disk, you may be asked to restart the printer several times during the process, which will ta ke about 6 hours with Secure Disk Erase or 24 hours with Secure Sanitizing Erase.

The paper cannot be loaded successfully ● Ensure no pape r is loaded. ● Ensure the paper is fa r enough inside the printer, you should feel the printer grab the paper. ● Do not attempt to straighte n the paper during the aligning process, un less instructed to do so by the front-pane l display.
Unsuccessful roll load with 44-inch printer On a 44-inch printer, if the pa per has not been in serted straight, the front panel displays the following instructions. 1. When prompted by the front-panel display, lift the blue leve r on the left. T he printer attempts to straighten the roll.
front-panel display message Suggested action Paper too small During the load process the printer detected that the pape r is too narrow or too short to be loaded in the printer. Pre ss the Cancel key to stop the load process. See Functional specifications on page 200 .
General purpose paper ● For thin pa pers (< 90 g/m 2 ) uncoated papers (for example plain paper or bright w hite paper) s elect paper type Bond and Coated > Plain Paper . ● For light coated papers (<110 g/m 2 ), select paper type Bond and Coat ed > Coated Pap er .
The paper has jammed When a paper jam occurs, you normally see the Po ssible paper jam message in the front-panel display. 1. Power off the printer at th e front panel and also switch it off at the rear. 2. Open the wind ow. 3. Try to move the pri nthead carriage out o f the way.
5. Carefully remove a ny of the jammed paper that you can lift up and o ut from the top of th e printer. 6. Standing behind the printer, rewind the roll or pu ll the cut sheet from the printer. If you cannot see the paper, return to the front o f the prin ter and remove it from the output tray.
9. Close window. 10. Switch on the printer. 11. Reload the roll, or load a new sheet see Paper handling on page 35 . NOTE: If you find that there is still some paper causing an obstruction within the printer, restart the procedure and carefull y remove all pieces of paper.
The paper is cut when the print has been completed By default the printer cuts the paper after the drying time has been completed, see Change the drying time on page 56 . You can disable the cutter, see Turn the automatic cut ter on and o ff on page 56 .
You can check the paper advance calibration status of th e currently loaded paper at any time by pressing the View loaded pa per key on the fro nt panel. The stat us may be one of the fo llowing. ● DEFAULT: This status appears when loading any paper that has not been calibrated.
Return to default calibration Returning to the de fault calibration sets all the corrections made by the paper advan ce calibration to zero. To return to the default pa per advance ca libration val ue, you must reset the calibration.

General advice When you have any print-quality problem: ● To achieve the best perfo rmance from your printer, use on ly genuine manufacturer' s supplies and accessories, whose reliability and performance have been thoroughly tested to give trouble-free performance and b est-quality prints.
Alternatively, or if you h a ve other print quali t y problems, you can continue reading this chapter. Horizontal lines across the image (banding) If your printed image su ffers from added hori zontal lines as shown (the color may vary): 1.
If the problem persists despite a ll the above actions, contact your customer se rvice representative for further supp ort. Lines are too thick, too thin, or missing 1. Check that the paper type yo u have loaded corresponds to the paper type sele cted in the front panel and in you r software.
1. The problem may be inherent in the image. T ry to improve the image with the ap plication you are using to edit it. 2. Check that you are using appropriate print-q uality settings.
● The borders of colored bl ocks are wrongly colored. To correct t his kind of problem: 1. Reseat the printhea ds by removing them and then reinserting them. See Remove a printhead on page 124 and Insert a printhead on page 127 . 2. Align the printheads.
Lines are blurred Humidity can cause ink to soak into the paper, ma king the lines blurre d and fuzzy. Try the following : 1. Check that your environmental condi tions (temperature, humidity) are suitable for hi gh-quality printing. See Environmental specifications on pa ge 202 .
The whole image is blurry or grainy 1. Check that the paper type yo u have loaded corresponds to the paper type sele cted in the front panel and in you r software. To check on the fro nt panel, use the View loaded pa per key . 2. Check that you are printing on the correct side of the paper.
1. Check that the paper typ e you have loaded correspo nds to the paper type selected in the front panel and in your software. To che ck on the front panel, use the View loaded paper key . 2. Try changing to a thicker paper type, such a s HP Heavyweigh t Coated Paper or HP Super Heavyweight Plus Matte Pap er.
Whenever you notice this p roblem, cancel the printing job immediately. Press the Cancel key and also cancel the job fro m your computer applicat ion. Soa ked paper can damage the printheads.
If edges of objects or li nes appear to be poorly defined or lighter in density, and you have already set the print- quality slider to Quality in the driver dialog (Mac OS Print di alog), select the custom print-qu ality options, and try settin g the quality level to Normal .
Colors are inaccurate If the colors of your print do not match your ex pectations, try the following: 1. Check that the paper type yo u have loaded corresponds to the paper type sele cted in the front panel and in you r software. To check on the fro nt panel, use the View loaded pa per key .
Colors are fading If you print on instant-dry photo paper , your prints will fade rapidly. If you plan to display the prints for more than two weeks, you should laminate them to achieve longer life . Prints on swellable coated papers will fade much less rapidly.
that they cannot handle an image of more than 32,76 8 pixels. If you try to print an image larger than this from these applications, the bottom of the image will be clipped. In this case, the only way to pri nt the whole image is to redu ce the resolution so that th e wh ole image requires fewer than 32,768 pixels.
The print is divided into two parts, bo th of which test printh ead performance. ● Part 1 (top) consists of rectangle s of pure colo rs, one for each printhead. This part represents the print quality that you will get from each color. ● Part 2 (bottom) consists of small dashes, one for ea ch nozzle on each printhead.
And here is an exa mple of the same printh ead in a bad sta te: Corrective action 1. Clean any faulty printhe ads (see Clean the pr intheads on page 179 ).

Cannot insert an ink cartridge 1. Check that you have the co rrect type of cartridge (model nu mber). 2. Check that the color ed label on the cartri dge is the same color as the la bel on the slot. 3. Check that the cartridge is correctly oriented, wi th the letter or letters marking the cartridge label right-side up and readable.
The front-panel display recommends reseating or replacing a printhead 1. From the front panel, turn the power off then on. 2. Check the front-p anel display mess age, if it shows the re ady message, the printer is ready to print . If the problem remains con tinue with the next step .
You must remove the pri n thead, see Remo ve a printhead o n page 124 , and using a lint free cloth, clean the bottom of the p rinthead until th e residue is removed.
2. To avoid an electric shock, swi tch the printer off and unplu g it. 3. Open the window. 4. Find the print head drop det ector beside t he stored pr inthead carriage .
6. With a dry lint free cloth, wipe the surface of t he drop detector to remove any non-visible debris. 7. Close the window. 8. Plug in and switch on the printer.
NOTE: If the paper has jammed , it is recommended tha t you reinsert the printheads and initiate the realignment procedure with the Image Qu ality Maintenance menu . CAUTION: Do n ot use transparent or semi-transpa rent paper to align the printheads. Reinsert printheads procedure 1.
3. If the loaded paper is satisfactory, th e printer ru ns the reali gnment and prints a realignment pa ttern. Ensure the window is cl osed, as a strong light s ource near th e printer during printh ead realignment can affect alignment. 4. The process takes abo ut five minutes.

The printer does not print If all is in order (paper loaded, all ink compone nts installed, and no file errors), there are still reasons why a file you ha ve sent from your com puter may not start printing when exp ected: ● You may have an elec trical power problem.

A file system check is taking place; it can take up to 40 minutes. Please wait until it finishes. CAUTION: If you turn the printer off before the file system check has finished, the file system could be seriously damaged, making the printer's hard disk unusab le.
