Status message s Status messages reflect the current state o f the device. The y inform you of normal operation a nd require no action to cle ar them. They change as the state of t he device changes. Whenever th e device is ready, not busy, an d has no pending warnin g messages, the status message READY appea rs if the device is turn ed on.

Availabl e symbols for d ialing fax num bers To enter a symbol, such as *, press Symbols repeat edly to scroll through th e list of symbols. Th e following table p rovides the sym bols that you can use in a fax or phon e number sequence, fax header informa tion, and sp eed-dial entries.
To load an origina l in the document feede r tray 1. Load your orig inal, with the print side down, i nto the document f eeder tray. Place th e pages so that the top edge of the document g oes in first.
Cards and env elopes • Avoid envelo pes that have a very slick finish, self -stick adhesives, clasps, or w indows. Also avoid cards and envelopes with thick, irregu lar, or curled edges, or areas that are wrinkled , torn, or otherwise da maged. • Use tightl y constructed envelo pes, and make sure the f olds are sharply crease d.

2. Flip the tray extender up tow ard you. NOTE: When you use legal-size paper, le ave the tray exten der closed. 3. Tap a stack of paper o n a flat surface to align the edges, and then check t he paper for the foll owing: • Make sure it is fre e of rips, dust, wr inkles, and curle d or bent edges.
4. Insert the stack of pa per into the input tray w ith the short edge forward and the print side down. Sl ide the stack of pa per forward until it st ops. CAUTION: Make sure that the devi ce is idle and silent when you load paper into the input tra y.
To load 10 x 15 cm ( 4 x 6 inch) photo pape r with tab in the input tray 1. Remove all paper f rom the input tray. 2. Insert the stack of phot o paper into the far-right sid e of the input tray wit h the short edge forward and the print side down. Slid e the stack of photo paper f orward until it stops.
Load envelop es (HP Officejet J360 0 only) You can load one or mo re envelopes into th e input tray of the device. Do not use shiny or embossed envel opes or envelopes that have clasps or win dows. NOTE: For specific details on how to fo rmat text for print ing on envelopes, consult the help files in you r word processing software.
HP Premium In kjet Transparenc y Film and HP Premiu m Plus Inkjet Tran sparency Film ▲ Insert the film so that the whit e transparency strip (with arrows and the HP log o) is on top and is going into the input tray fi rst. NOTE: The device cannot a utomatically detect the pa per size or paper type.
Print on special or custom-sized media (Windows) To print o n special o r custom-sized me dia 1. Load the approp riate media. For more inf ormation, see Load media . 2. With a document o pen, click Print on the Fi le menu , and then cl ick Setup , Proper ties , or Prefer ences .
Set up speed-dial entries You can set up frequen tly used fax numbe rs as speed-dial entri es. This lets you dial those numbers quickly by usi ng the control panel. T he first five entries for each of these destinatio ns are associated with the five speed-dial buttons on the control panel.
A group memb er must be a member of the speed-dial list before you can a dd the member to a speed-dial group . You can add up to 20 fax num bers to each group (with up to 50 characters for each fax number). • HP Photosmart Softw are (Windows) : Open the H P Photosmart Software and foll ow the instru ctions in the onscre en Help.

Change settings (Ma c OS) To change the settings 1. On the File menu, click Page Setup . 2. Change the sett ings that you want (such a s paper size), and then click OK . 3. On the File menu, click Print to ope n the printer driver . 4. Change the sett ings that you want (such as media type), and t hen click OK or Print .
7. Choose a booklet l ayout from the Booklet Layou t drop-down list, if you want . 8. Change any ot her settings, an d then click OK . 9. Print your document . To print on both sides of a page (Mac OS) 1. Load the appropriate media. For more informati on, see Guidelines for pri nting on both sides of a page an d Load media .

When you chang e copy settings, the chang es are for the current copy job o nly. You must set the change s as defaults for the settin gs to apply to all futu re copy jobs. To save the cur rent settings as defaults for future jobs 1. Make any necessa ry changes to the settings in the Copy Menu .
To set the paper type for co pies from the co ntrol panel 1. In the Copy area, pre ss Copy Menu repeatedly u ntil Paper Ty pe appears. 2. Press until the app ropriate paper type appears.
Resize an original to fit onto letter or A4 paper If the image or te xt on your original fills the ent ire sheet with no margi ns, use Fit to Page or Full Page 91% to reduce your original an d prevent unwanted cropping of the text or images at the edges of the sheet.
NOTE: The HP Office jet J3500 supports bla ck and white copies on plain paper only. To copy a legal-size document onto letter pap er from the control panel 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the inp ut tray. 2. Load your legal-size d ocument print side dow n in the document feeder tray.
The Mixed enh ancement is the defaul t option. Use the Mixed enhancement t o sharpen edges of most originals. NOTE: The HP Offi cejet J3500 supports bl ack and white copies on plain paper only. To copy a blurred doc ument from the control panel 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input t ray.
5 Scan You can scan originals an d send them to a variet y of destinations, such as a folder on the network or a program o n a computer. You can use th e control panel, the H P photo and imaging softwa re, and TWAIN-compliant or WIA-compliant programs on a compute r.
To send a scan to a program o n a computer from the co ntrol panel 1. Load the origin al in the ADF. For more info rmation, see Load origin als . 2. Press the Scan Menu or Scan To butt on. 3. Press the arrow keys to select the pro gram that you want to u se (such as the HP photo and i maging software), and then press OK .
Edit a scanned ph oto or graphic You can edit a scann ed photo or graphic usi ng the HP Photosmart Softw are. Use this software to adjust the brigh tness, contrast, color saturation, and more. You can also rotate the image using t he HP Photosmart Softw are.

6F a x You can use the devic e to send and receiv e faxes, including co lor faxes. You can schedule faxes to be se nt at a later time and set up spe ed-dials to send faxes q uickly and easily to freque ntly used numbers.
NOTE: If you need p rinted confirmatio n that your faxes were succes sfully sent, enable f ax confirmatio n before sending any faxes. TIP: You can also send a fax man ually from a phone or by us ing monitor diali ng. These feature s allow you to control th e pace of your dialin g.
3. If the recipient answers the telephone, you can engage in a conversa tion before sending your fax. NOTE: If a fa x machine an swers the call , you will he ar fax tone s from the receiving fax machine. Proceed to the next step t o transmit the fax. 4.
NOTE: Make sure the volume is turned on, or you wi ll not hear a dial tone . NOTE: The HP Offi cejet J3500 suppo rt s black-and-whit e faxes only . To send a fax using monitor dia ling from the control panel 1. Load your ori ginals. For add itional informat ion, see Load an orig inal in the automatic document f eeder (ADF) .
You can only schedule one f ax to be sent at a time. You ca n continue to send faxes normally, however, w hile a fax is scheduled. NOTE: You can only send faxes in black and white due to memory limitations. To schedule a fax from the c ontrol panel 1.
3. Press START FAX Black . 4. When prompte d, load your originals print side up and top first in the cen ter of the document fee der tray. For additional information, see Load an original in the automatic document feeder (ADF) . 5. Press START FAX Black again.
Send a color original or photo fax (HP Officeje t J3600 only) You can fax a color original or photo from the device. I f it determines that th e recipient's fax machine only su pports black-and-white f axes, the fax is sent in black and wh ite. HP recommend s that you use only color originals f or color faxing.
The follow ing resolution settings are a vailable for sen ding faxes: Fine , Very Fine , Photo , and Standard . • Fine : provi des high-quality text su itable for faxing most do cuments. This is the defau lt setting. When sen ding faxes in color, the device always uses the Fine setting.
4. In the Fax area, press Fax Menu repeatedly u ntil Lighter / Da rker appears. 5. Press to lighten the fax or press to darken it, and then press OK . The indicator moves to the left or right as you press an arrow button.
NOTE: The HP Officej et J3500 can receive black -and-white faxe s only. • Receive a fax manu ally • Set up backup fax reception • Reprint received faxes from memory • Poll to receive a fax •.
The follow ing Backup Fax Re ception modes are availa ble: On The default setting. When Backup Fax Reception is On , the device stores all received faxes in memory. This ena bles you to reprint up to eight of the most recently printed faxes if they are still saved in memory.
Depending on the sizes of th e faxes in memory, you can rep rint up to eight of th e most recently p rinted faxes, i f they are still in memory. For example, you might ne ed to reprint your faxes if you lost the copy of your last printout. To rep rint faxes in mem ory from the co ntrol panel 1.
HP recommends that you verify the number you are forwarding to is a worki ng fax line. Send a test fax to ma ke sure the fa x machine is able t o receive your forwarded faxes. To forward faxes from the contro l panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Select Advan ce Fax Setup , and then select Fax Forwarding Black Only .
the image of t he incoming fax is reduced to fi t on one page, if possib le. If this feature is turned off, i nformation that does n ot fit on the first page is printed on a second page. Automatic Reduction is useful wh en you receive a legal-size fax and letter-size paper is loade d in the inpu t tray.
4. Press the right arrow but ton to scroll through the numbers from whic h you have received faxes. When t he number you want to block appea rs, press OK to select it.
• Set the dial ty pe • Set the redial options • Set the fax speed Configur e the fax header The fax header print s your name and fax number on th e top of every fax you send. HP recommends tha t you set up the fax header by using the software that you installed wi th the device.
monitors the line. If the device de tects fax tones, it receives th e fax. If the call is a v oice call, the answeri ng machine re cords the inco ming message. To set the number of rings befo re answering via the contr ol panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Press Basic Fa x Setup , and then press Ring s to Answer .
Set the dial type Use this proced ure to set tone-dialing or pulse-dialing m ode. The facto ry-set default is Tone . Do not change the setti ng unless you know that you r phone line cannot use tone dialing. NOTE: The pulse-dia ling option is not available in all countries/r egions.
To set the fax speed from th e control panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Select Advanced Fa x Setup , and then press Fax Speed . 3. Select an optio n using the arro w keys, and then p ress OK . Fax over the Internet You may subscri be to a low cost phon e service that al lows you to send and receive faxes with your device by usi ng the Internet.
3. From the contro l panel, press Set up . 4. Select Tools , and th en select Run Fax Test . The device displays t he status of the test o n the display and prints a report. 5. Review the re port. • If the test passes and you ar e still having problems fa xing, chec k the fax settings listed in the report t o verify the settings are correct.
Send & Receive Prints a fax confirmation report fo r ever y fax you send and r eceive. TIP: If you choose On Fa x Send or Send & Receive , and scan your fax to sen d from memory, you can include an image o f the first page of the fax on the Fax Sent Confirmati on report.
To print the fax log fr om the control panel 1. On the control panel, press Setup . 2. Press the arrow key to move down to Print Report , and t hen press OK . 3. Press the arrow key to move down to Fax Log , and then press OK . 4. Press OK again to p rint the log.
7 Configure and manage This section is inten ded for the administrator or individua l who is responsible for ma naging the device. Thi s section contains inf ormation about the following to pics.
Use this tool... to obtain the follo wing information.... Cartridge Details button. Click the Cartridge Details button to view information abou t replacement print cartridges and exp iration dates.
Open the Toolbox • From the HP Solution Center, clic k the Settings menu, poi nt to Print Settings , and then click Printer To olbox . • Right-click the HP Digital Imaging M onitor in the tray, poin t to Printer M odel Name and then cl ick Display Pr inter Toolbox .
To open the HP Printer Utili ty from the Printer Setup Utility 1. From the Finder , select Computer from the Go menu. 2. Select the device from t he list, and then press Utility .
Set up faxing (parallel phone systems) Before you begin setting up the device for faxing, determ ine which kind of phone system your country/ region uses. The instruct ions for fax setup diff er depending on w hether you have a serial- or parallel-type phone system.
To determine the best way to set up the device in your h ome or office, first read through the questio ns in this section and re cord your answers. Next, ref er to the table in the following sect ion and choose the recomme nded setup case b ased on your answers.
Select your fa x setup case Now that you ha ve answered all the questions about the eq uipment and servic es that share the phone line with the device , you are ready to choose the be st setup case for your home or office.

To set up the device with a s eparate fax line 1. Using the ph one cord supplied in the box w ith the device, connect one end to your telephone wa ll jack, then connect the ot her end to the port labeled 1 -LINE on the back of the devi ce.
To set up the devi ce with DSL 1. Obtain a D SL filter from your D SL provider. 2. Using the p hone cord supplied in th e box with the device , connect one end to th e open port on the DSL filt er, and then conn ect the other end to the port la beled 1-LINE on the back of the d evice.
Case D: Fax w ith a distinctive ring ser vice on the same line If you subscribe to a distinctive ring service (through your t elephone company) tha t allows you to have multiple phone num bers on one phone line, e ach with a different ring pattern, set up the device as described in this sect ion.
Case E: Shared voice/ fax line If you receive b oth voice calls and fa x calls at the sam e phone number, and you have no other offi ce equipment (or voice ma il) on this phone line, set up the de vice as described in this section.
3. Now you need to deci de how you want the device to a nswer calls, automaticall y or manually: • If you set up the device to answer calls automatical ly , it answers all incoming calls and receives faxes.
To set up the device with voice mail 1. Using the p hone cord supplied in th e box with the device , connect one end t o your telephone wall jack, then conn ect the other end t o the port labeled 1-LI NE on the back of the device.
3 Computer with modem To set up th e device with a computer dial -up modem 1. Remove the white plug from the port labeled 2-EXT on the back of the devi ce. 2. Find the phone co rd that connects from the back o f your computer (your computer dial-up mode m) to a telephone wa ll jack.
1 Telephone wall jack 2 Parallel sp litter 3 DSL/ADSL filter Connect one end of the phone jack that wa s supplied with the device to connect to the 1-LINE port on the back of the device. Connect the other end of the cord to the D SL/ADSL filter. 4 Computer 5 Computer DSL/ADSL modem NOTE: You will need to purchase a paral lel splitter.
NOTE: Since your compu ter modem shares the ph one line with the device, you cannot use bot h your modem and the devi ce simultaneously. For example, you cannot use the device for f axing while you are using your compu ter modem to send a n e-mail or access the Inter net.
3 Parallel splitter 4 Computer 5 Telephone To set up the devic e on the same phone line as a co mputer with one pho ne port 1. Remove the white plug from the port l abeled 2-EXT on the back of th e device. 2. Find the phone cord that connects fro m the back of your comp uter (your computer dial-up modem) t o a telephone wall jack.
Shared voice/fax wi th computer DSL/A DSL modem Use these instructio ns if your computer has a DSL/ADSL mode m 1 Telephone wall jack 2 Parallel splitter 3 DSL/ADSL filter 4 Phone cord supplie d with the device 5 DSL/ADSL modem 6 Computer 7 Telephone NOTE: You will need to purchase a parallel splitter.
To set up the device with a compute r DSL/ADSL modem 1. Obtain a D SL filter from your D SL provider. NOTE: Phones in ot her parts of the home/office sha ring the same phone number with DSL servi ce will need to be connecte d to additional D SL filters, oth erwise you will experience noise when making voice calls.
4 Telephone (optional) To set up the device with a shared voice/fax line w ith answering machi ne 1. Remove the white plug from the port labeled 2-EXT on the back of the devi ce. 2. Unplug your answerin g machine from the telepho ne wall jack, and connect it to the port labeled 2-EXT on the back of the device.
NOTE: Since your computer dial-up modem shares t he phone line with the HP device, you can not use both your mode m and the device si multan eously. For example, you ca nnot use the HP device for faxing whil e you are using your computer dial-up modem to send an e-mail or access t he Internet.
6 Comp uter wi th modem 7 Use the phone cord supplie d in the box with the device to connect to the "1-LINE" port To set up th e device on the s ame phone li ne as a com puter with one phone port 1. Remove the white plug from the port label ed 2-EXT on the back of the H P device.
When the phone ri ngs, your answering machin e answers after the num ber of rings you have set, and th en plays your recorded greeti ng. The device monitors t he call during thi s time, "listeni ng" for fax tones.
To set up th e device with a computer DSL /ADSL mode m 1. Obtain a DSL /ADSL filter from yo ur DSL/ADSL provid er. NOTE: Phones in other parts of the home/o ffice sharing the same phone nu mber with DSL/ADSL service will need to be connected to addi tional DSL/ADSL fi lters, otherwis e you will experience no ise when making voice calls.
Since your compu ter dial-up modem shares the ph one line with th e device, you ca nnot use both yo ur modem and the de vice simultaneou sly. For example, you ca nnot use the device fo r faxing if you are using your c omputer dial-up mo dem to send an e -mail or access the Internet.
To set up th e device on the same phone line as a computer w ith two phone ports 1. Remove the white plug from the port labeled 2-EXT on the back of the devi ce. 2. Find the phone co rd that connects from the back o f your computer (your computer dial-up mode m) to a telephone wa ll jack.

NOTE: You may connect the USB ca ble at a later time when you need to use the device. You can also share the device w ith other computers usin g a simple form of networking known as locally shared ne tworking. For more informati on, see Share the devic e on a locally shared net work .
To share the device 1. Click Star t , point to Settings , an d then click Printers or Pri nters and Faxes . - Or - Click Star t , click Control Panel , and then double-cli ck Printers . 2. Right-click the device icon, click Prop erties , and then click the Sharing tab.
For more informa tion about USB device shari ng, see th e support information on the Apple Web site ( www.app le.com ) or the Apple Ma cintosh Help on the computer. To share the device among comput ers running Mac O S 1. Turn on printer sh aring on all Macint osh computers (host and clients) that are connected to t he printer.
8. After the softw are is installed, connect t he device to your computer. 9. Press the Power button to turn the de vice on. After connectin g and turning on the device, you might have to wait several minutes for all of the Plug and Pl ay events to complete.
To uninstall fr om a Macintosh comp uter 1. Launch HP Device Manager . 2. Click Information an d Settings . 3. Select Uninstall HP AiO Software from the pull-dow n menu. Follow the onscre en instructions. 4. After the software is uninstalled, restart your computer.

8 Maintain and troubleshoot This section co ntains the following topi cs: • Work with print cartridges • Clean the device • Troubleshoot ing tips and resources • Solve printing problems • Po.
NOTE: Ink from the cartridg es is used in the printing pro cess in a number of different ways, including in the initial ization process, which p repares the device an d cartridges for printing. In addition, some residua l ink is left in the cartrid ge after it is used.
When you receive a l ow-ink warning message on the display, make sure you have a replacement print cartridge availabl e. You should also replace the print cartridges when you see faded text or if yo u experience print quality is sues related to the print cartri dges.

6. Remove the new print cartridge from its packa ging and, being carefu l to touch only the black plast ic, gently remove the plastic ta pe by using the pink pul l tab.

To align the print ca rtridges from the contro l panel when prompted 1. Make sure you have letter or A4 unused plain wh ite paper loaded in t he input tra y, and then press OK . 2. The device prints a test page and calibrates the p rinter. Recycle or discard the p age.
NOTE: The HP Officeje t J3500 supports one black prin t cartridge only. To clean the print ca rtridges from the control pane l 1. Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain w hite paper into the input tray. 2. Press Setup . 3. Press 6 , then press 1 . This selects Tool s and then selects Clean Print Cart ridge .
Make sure you have the following mat erials available: • Dry foam rubber sw abs, lint-free clot h, or any soft mate rial that will n ot come apart or leave fibe rs.
7. Clean only the copper-colored contacts. Allow the print cartridges to dry for approximate ly ten minute s. 1 Copper-colored con tacts 2 Ink nozzles (do not clean) 8. Slide the print cartridge back int o the slot. Push the print cartridge fo rward until it clicks into place.
To clean the area around the in k nozzles 1. Turn on the devic e and open the print cartridge door. The print carriage moves to the far right side of the device. 2. Wait until t he print carriage is idle and sile nt, and then unplug the power cord from the back of the device .
Clean the device To ensure th at your copies and scans rema in clear, you might need t o clean the glass strip or w hite strip insi de the automatic do cument feeder. Yo u might also want to dust the exterior of the HP All-in-O ne. Clean the glass strip Minor debris can ac cumulate on the w hite strip located in side the automa tic document feeder.
4. Close the autom atic document feeder cover. CAUTION: Make su re you close the au tomatic document fee der cover before loading any pape r or originals. If you do not close the cover, you might damage the mechanism. 5. Plug in the powe r cord, and then turn on the device.
4. If further cleaning is needed , repeat the previous steps using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, and wip e the strip thoroughly with a da mp cloth to remove any residual alcohol. CAUTION: Be careful not to spil l alcohol on the glass or exterior of the HP All-in-One, as this might damage the device.

Size is reduced • The reduce/e nlarge or other cop y feature migh t have been set from the control panel to reduce the scanned image. Check the settings for the cop y job to make sure that they are for normal size. • The HP photo and imaging so ftware settings migh t be set to redu ce the scanned image.
• Large, bla ck typefaces look splo tchy (not smooth) The default enhancement setting mig ht not be suitable f or the job. Check the set ting and change it to enhance text or photograp hs, if needed. For more information, see Change the copy setti ngs .
Part of the documen t did not s can or te xt is missin g • Check the origi nal • Make sure that you loaded the original correctly. For m ore information, see Load originals . • Colored ba ckgrounds can cause images in the foreground to blend into the background.
Error messages appear • "Unable to activate TWAIN sour ce" or "An error occurred while a cquiring the image" • If you are a cquiring an image fr om another device, such as a di gital camera or another scanne r, make sure that the other device is TWAIN- compliant.
• Graphics look d ifferent from the original The graphics sett ings might not be suita ble for the type of scan job that yo u are performing. Try changing the graphics settings. • Take steps to improv e the scan quality • Use high-qu ality originals.
The fax tes t failed If you ran a fax test and the test failed, review the report for basic informat ion about the error. For more de tailed informat ion, check the report to see which part of the test faile d, and then review the appropriate topic in this sect ion for solutions to try.
The "Fax Conne cted to Active Telephone Wall Jack" test failed Solution: • Check t he connection between t he telephone wall jack and the device to make sure the phone cord is secure. • Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the device.

• Other equip ment, which uses the same phone li ne as the device, might be ca using the test to fa il. To find out if ot her equipment is cau sing a problem, disconnect everything from the phone line, and t hen run the test agai n.
Solution: • Make sure you used the phone cord supplied in the box with the device to connect to the t elephone wall jack. On e end of the phon e cord should be connect ed to the port labele d 1-LINE on the back of th e device and the other end to your telephone wall jack, as shown bel ow.
• Make sure the de vice is not connecte d to a telephone wall j ack that is set up for digital phone s. To check if your phone lin e is digital, con nect a regular anal og phone to the line and listen for a di al tone. If you do not hear a normal soundin g dial tone, it might be a phone li ne set up for digita l phones.
• Make sure the telephone you use to init iate the fax call is conne cted directly to the device. To send a fax manually , the telephone m ust be connected dire ctly to the port labeled 2-EXT on the device, as sh own below.
• If you have an answering machine on the same phone line with the dev ice, you might have on e of the followi ng problems: • Your answering machine might not be set up pr operly with the device. • Your outgo ing message might be too long or too loud to allow the device to detect fax tones, and t he sending fax machine mig ht disconnect.
The device c annot send faxes, but can receive faxes Solution: • The device migh t be dialing too fast or too soon . You might need to insert some pauses in the n umber sequence. For exampl e, if you need to acce ss an outside line before d ialing the phone nu mber, insert a pause following the access number.
TIP: If the device came wit h a 2-wire phone cord adap tor, you can use it with a 4-wire phone co rd to extend the l ength. For informa tion on using the 2-wire phone cord adaptor, se e the documen tation that came with it. To extend your phone cord 1.
• Ensure pow er cord and other cables are working, and are firmly co nnected to the device. • All packi ng tapes and materials a re removed from the device. • Rear access panel is l ocked into place. • Paper is loa ded correctly in the t ray, and is not ja mmed in the device.
Paper can also jam in the au tomatic document feeder. Several common actio ns can cause paper to ja m the automatic docu ment feeder: • Placing to o much paper in the document feeder tray. • Using paper that is too thick or too thin fo r the device.
2. Gently pull the paper out of the ro llers. CAUTION: If the paper tears wh en you are removing it f rom the rollers, chec k the rollers and wheels for to rn pieces of paper that mig ht be remaining inside the device. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the devic e, more paper jams are like ly to occur.
