This chapter pres ents an ov ervie w of the DIRECW A Y broadband satellite system, a summary of th e antenna installation steps, and information about tasks related to antenna installat ion.

The ra dio assembly ( Figure 5 ) consists of the transmitter , lo w noise block con v erter (LNB), and transmit/recei ve isolation assembly (TRIA).

Chapter 3 • Installi ng the radio and antenna assemb lies 1035567-0001 Revision A 13 Assembling the Az/El cap The Az/El cap is shipped un-assem bled. Follo w the directions in this section to assemble it. Y ou sh ould be able to assemble it in about 2-5 min.
Chapter 3 • Installing the radio and antenna assemblies 14 1035567-000 1 Revision A 4. Place the Az/El mechanism ov er the re v olving plate so the bolt holes align. 5. Install a bolt from underneath the re v olving plate. While holding it with one hand, install the 7/ 16-in.
Chapter 3 • Installi ng the radio and antenna assemb lies 1035567-0001 Revision A 15 Installing the Az/El cap onto the antenna Before you attach the Az/El cap to the antenna, you must set the antenna ele v ation and polarization. As you set the ele v ation and polarization, refer to Figure 11 .

Later , when you point the antenna, yo u f ine-tune the ele vation adj ustment.
Chapter 3 • Installi ng the radio and antenna assemb lies 1035567-0001 Revision A 17 3. Use a 1/2-in. socket wrench or open-end wrench to loosen the two ele vation nuts. See Figure 14 . 4. Locate the elev a tion reference edge on the ele v ation scale on the right side of the cap assembly .

Later , when you point the antenna, yo u f ine-tune the polarizat ion adjustment.
Chapter 3 • Installi ng the radio and antenna assemb lies 1035567-0001 Revision A 19 5. Place the Az/El cap ov er the sc re w holes in the back of the antenna reflector ( see Figure 17 ). Make sure the Az/El cap mount scre w holes are properly aligned with the holes in the antenna reflector .
Chapter 3 • Installing the radio and antenna assemblies 20 1035567-000 1 Revision A Installing the fine ele v ation pointing tool The fine el e v ation pointing tool ( Figure 18 ) consists of a long ele v ation adjustment bolt with a cl amp on on e end and a flange on the other end.

Chapter 3 • Installing the radio and antenna assemblies 22 1035567-000 1 Revision A Figure 20 illustrates the difference between the horizontal shim and vertical shim. Note the positions of the al ignment pins. 4. Remov e the horizontal shim an d O-ring.
Chapter 3 • Installi ng the radio and antenna assemb lies 1035567-0001 Revision A 23 Because of the shim’ s alignmen t pins, you must rotate the TRIA 90 ° from its horizontal polarization position. Y ou must rotate the TRIA befor e you re-attach the w a ve guid e end so you can insert the shim alignm ent pins into the wa ve guide end plate.
Chapter 3 • Installing the radio and antenna assemblies 24 1035567-000 1 Revision A Figure 22 shows ho w the TRIA is positioned for horizontal transmit polarization compared to ho w it is positioned for vertical transmit polarization. 6. Make sure the O-ring sho wn in Figure 21 on page 23 is in place in the shim.

Chapter 3 • Installing the radio and antenna assemblies 26 1035567-000 1 Revision A 6. Use a 5/16-in. socket wrench or open-end wrench to tighten the bolts attaching the transmitter to the feed arm. 7. Make sure the transmitter and f eed arm are oriented correctly , as sho wn in Figure 24 .

Route the transmit cable (marked with blue electrical tape) to the back of the transmitter in a conf iguration similar to that sho wn in Figure 30 .

Chapter 5 • Pointing the ant enna 1035567-0001 Revision A 39 By obtaining the strongest possibl e signal you ensure that the terminal can use all the system’ s capacity . P ersonnel requirements One person can point the antenna if an OPI is used. Otherwise, pointing is usually a two-person task.
Chapter 5 • Pointing the an tenna 40 1035567-000 1 Revision A The OPI attaches to the receiv e cable from the LNB, as sho wn in Figure 35 . Note that the OPI will not w ork unless it is enabled on the appropriate screen on the in stallation software.
Chapter 5 • Pointing the ant enna 1035567-0001 Revision A 41 Prerequisites f or antenna pointing The follo wing are required for antenna pointing: • The antenna must be installed. • The IDU must be installed. • The transmit and recei ve cables must be connected to the IDU and ODU.
Chapter 5 • Pointing the an tenna 42 1035567-000 1 Revision A Adjusting the antenna T o point the ante nna you mak e three adjustment s: • Azimuth – Side-to-sid e adjustment • Ele v ation – Adj ustment up and do wn • Polarization – Rotational adjustment These adjustments are illustrated in Figure 37 .

Chapter 5 • Pointing the an tenna 44 1035567-000 1 Revision A Checking the azim uth, elev ation, and polarization settings 1. Check to see if the ele v ation reference and polarization settings are still at their pre viously set v alues (the v alues calculated by the installation software).
Chapter 5 • Pointing the ant enna 1035567-0001 Revision A 45 Receive pointing Recei ve pointing peaks the recei v e signal. Y ou must peak the signal e ven if the antenna is lock ed to it. Use the installation software to check the signal strength. Then adjust the antenna to peak the signal.

While watching the signal st rength di splay , adjust the ele v ation adjustment nuts by turning them a fe w turns clockwise and counterclockwise until you peak the signal again. 3. When the signal is peaked, tighten the tw o ele v ation nuts.
Chapter 5 • Pointing the ant enna 1035567-0001 Revision A 49 7. While watching the signal strength number to ensure that it stays at maximum, tighten the el ev ation nuts in the following sequence: a. Snug the left nut b ut do not completely tighten it.
Chapter 5 • Pointing the an tenna 50 1035567-000 1 Revision A Isolating the transm it signal T o prev ent signal cross talk, you use a pro cedure kno wn as Automated Cross Polarization (A CP ) to isolate the transmit signal from the recei ve signal.
