2 How Sonar W orks Sonar technology is based on sound wa ves. T he 700 Series™ Fishing System uses sonar to locate and define structure, bottom contour and composition, as well as depth directly below the transducer .
3 How Sonar Works When all the echoes are viewed side b y side, an easy to interpret “graph“ of the bottom, fish, and structure appears. The so und puls es are tran sm itt ed at va rio us frequencies depending on the application. Very high frequencies (455 kHz) are used for grea test definition but the operating depth is limited.
4 DualBeam PLUS™ Sonar (DualBeam PLUS ™ models only [788ci HD]) Y our 788ci HD Fishin g System uses a 20 0/8 3 kHz Dual Beam PL US™ son ar syst em wit h a wid e (6 0° ) ar ea of cov er ag e.
5 How Sonar Works Down Imaging™ Sonar (Down Imaging™ models only [788ci HD DI]) Y our 788ci HD DI Fishing System uses Down Imaging™ technology . The Down Imaging™ transducer scans the water with razor -thin, high-definition beams. The beams are wide (side to side) but very thin front to back.
6 Xtreme Depth Sonar (Xtr eme Depth Series™ models only [788ci HD XD]) Y our 7 88ci HD X D Fi shin g Sy stem uses t he XD tr ansd ucer to pro vid e ext rem e de pth co ver age wi th Dual Be am PL US™ tec hno logy . The Xtreme Depth sonar beams can be operated at two frequencies: 50 kHz (74°) and 200 kHz (20°).
7 Dual Beam Ice T ransducer (w it h opt io na l-p urc hase XI 9 20 Ic e T ra nsd uce r) The XI 9 2 0 Ic e T ran s du c er p rov id e s selecta ble dual -frequency sonar with a wide area of cov erage. Selectable dual- frequency gives you the option of two beams, and both beams will cover the bottom and pro vide high definition.
8 QuadraBeam PLUS™ Sonar (optional-purchase QuadraBeam PLUS™ transducer) QuadraBeam PLUS™ sonar provides an ext remel y wid e 90° are a of coverage .
9 WideSide® Sonar (optional-purchase WideSide® transducer) The W ideSide® transducer is a specialized "side-looking" transducer that is extremely useful for bank fishing or looking for bait fi s h in o p en w ate r.
10 Univer sal Sonar 2 (compatible w/ optional-pur chase Minnkota trolling motors) Y our 700 Series™ Fishing System supports Univer sal Sonar 2, a state-of-the- art, integrated and protected transducer that is built into the lower unit of Minnkota trolling motors.
11 The following GPS functionality is currently supported by the 700 Series™ Fishing System when it is connected to the included GPS receiver: • V iew current position • V iew current track (bre.
12 What’s on the Control Head Y our 700 Series™ interface is easy to use. A combination of keys and special featur es allows you to control what you see on the display . Refer to the followi ng illustration, and see Ke y Functions for more information.
13 Ke y Functions Y our Fishing System user interface consists of a set of easy-to-use keys that work with various on-screen views and menus to give you flexibility and control over your fishing experience. POWER/LIGHT Ke y The POWER/LIGHT key is used to pow er the Fishing System on and off.
14 ZOOM (+/–) Ke y The +/– Zoom key has multiple functions, depending on the situation: • In any of the Navigation V iews or the Sonar Zoom V iew , press the +/– Zoom key to change the scale of the view to appear closer or farther awa y . See Views and Introduction to Navigation for more informa tion.
15 • Chart Vie w: Press any arro w on the 4-WA Y Cursor Control k ey to pan the chart and highlight decluttered waypoint icons. • Bird’s Ey e V iew: The 4-WA Y Cursor Control k ey controls the motion of the ey e point.
16 MENU Ke y The MENU key is used to access the menu system. See The Menu System for more information. • Star t- Up Opt ion s Menu: Pr ess the MEN U key dur ing the pow er up seq uenc e to vie w the St art -Up Opt ion s menu.
17 GO T O Ke y The GOT O key has multiple functions, depending on the situation: • If the Cursor is active , press the GOT O k ey while in any view to create a wa ypoint and start navigation towar ds that waypoint. • If the Cursor is not active , press the GOT O key to display the sav ed waypoi nts list, and then highlight a waypoint.
18 SD Memory Card Slots The SD memory card slots on y our control head can be used with SD memory cards (optional- purchase required) to add detailed charts to your Fishing System, update software, or export navigatio n data from your Fishing System. T o insert an SD card: 1.

32 What’s on the Do wn Imaging™ Display Understanding the Down Imaging™ Display The images you see on the Down Imaging™ display are produced using sonar technology . Each time the unit pings, a strip of data repr esenting all the echoes received by the transducer are put together on the display to form the image that y ou see.
33 What’s on the Do wn Imaging™ Display Down Imaging™ Sensitivity Use Imaging Sensitivity to control how the sonar returns appear on the display . Increase the sensitivity to re veal weak er returns that may be of interest, especially in very clear water or greater depths.
34 Views V iews The sonar and na vigation information from your Fishing System is display ed on your screen in a variety of easy-to-r ead views. Ther e are many views available on your Fishing System. • Default Vie w: When you first pow er up the 788ci HD control head, Chart/Sonar Combo Vie w will be the default view .

37 Views Sonar Zoom V iew Sonar Zoom View provides a magnified view of the bottom and structure. The Sonar Zoom View makes it easier to see separate sonar returns that would usually be displa yed close together , such as those caused by fish suspended close to the bottom or within structure.
38 Views Split Sonar V iew Split Sonar V iew displays sonar returns from each down beam frequency on separate sides of the screen. Y ou can use the Split Sonar Vie w to make side by side comparisons between the sonar returns from both beams.
39 Views Big Digits V iew Big Digits Vie w provides digital data in a large, easy-to-see forma t. • Digital Readouts: Depth is always displayed. Readouts for temperatur e, speed, and T riplog information are displayed automatically if the appropria te accessory is connected to the Fishing System.

76 Introduction to Navigation Add a W aypoint T arget or T rolling Grid The W aypoint T arget shows a target consisting of concentric circles in various distance ranges centered on the wa ypoint you choose. The T rolling Grid shows various distance ranges in grid format from the waypoint you choose.
77 Introduction to Navigation Routes Save the Current Route: While you are navigating, the current route can be saved. From the Navigation X-Press™ Menu, select Sa ve Curr ent Route, and press the RIGHT Cursor ke y . Navigation will continue. Create a New Route: Open the Wa ypoint Management dialog box.

80 Introduction to Navigation Edit your Waypoints, Routes, T racks, and Groups Whether you are creating a new navigation item or editing it, you can use the same steps to customize a waypoint, route, track, or group. The available settings will depend on the type of item you are editing.
