Chapter 1. Safety information This chapter presents following safety information that you need to be familiar with before you service a ThinkPad Not ebook.
Electrical safety Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only appr oved tools and test equipment. Some hand t ools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulate you when working with live electrical currents.
– Send another person to get medical aid. Safety inspection guide The purpose of this inspection guide is t o assist you in identifying potentially unsafe conditions. As each machine was designed and built, r equired safety it ems wer e installed to pr otect users and service technicians from injury .
When handling ESD-sensitive parts: • K eep the parts in protective packages until they are insert ed into the product. • A void contact with other people. • W ear a gr ounded wrist strap against your skin t o eliminate static on your body . • P revent the part fr om touching your clothing.
Some standby batteries contain a small amount of nickel and cadmium. Do not disassemble a standby batt er y, recharge it, throw it into re or water , or short-circuit it. Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations. Use only the battery in the appropriate parts listing.
DANGER Unless hot swap is allowed for the FRU being replaced, do as follows before removing it: power off the computer , unplug all power cords from electrical outlets, r emove the battery pack, and disconnect any interconnecting cables.

Chapter 2. Important service information This chapter presents following important service information that applies to all machine types support ed by this manual: • “Str ategy for r eplacing FRUs.
• If an adapter or a device consists of mor e than one FRU , any of the FRUs may be the cause of the err or . Before replacing the adapt er or device, r emove the FRUs, one by one, to see if the sympt oms change. Replace only the FRU that changed the sympt oms.
• The PEW recor d is the 4-digit MT and 3-digit model, where model = “C T O” (Example: 1829-C T O). • eSupport will show both the C TO and CMV machine type models (Example: 1829-C T O and 1829-W15 will be found on the eSupport site.) • The HMM will have the 4-digit MT and 3-digit C T O model only (Example: 1829-C TO).
Using the HMM F or Key Commodities (Examples - hard disk drive, system board, micropr ocessor , L CD , and memor y) Use the HMM as a back-up to PEW and eSupport t o view the complet e list of FRUs at the MT Model level.

9. Cust omer's name and address Note: During the warr anty period, the customer may be responsible for repair costs if the computer damage was caused by misuse, accident, modication, unsuitable physical or operating environment, or impr oper maintenance by the customer .
F or some possible congurations of the computer , PC-Doctor might not run correctly . T o avoid this problem, you need to initialize the comput er setup by use of the BIOS Setup Utility before you run PC-Doct or . T o ent er BIOS Setup Utility, do as follows: 1.

F or additional information about this program, see the Help for the pr ogram. PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery In some models of ThinkP ad Notebook, the Rescue and Recovery ® workspace enables you to run the PC-Doctor program to t est the har dware features of the computer .

The recovery disc set consists of the user instructions and the following set of DVDs to rest ore the computer to the original factory congur ation. Operating System Recovery Disc (one disc) This disc r estor es the Micr osoft Windows oper ating system.
Note: Aft er restoring a drive to the factory default settings, you might need to reinstall some device drivers. P asswords As many as three passwords may be needed for any ThinkPad Notebook: the power -on passwor d (POP), the har d-disk passwor d (HDP), and the supervisor password (SVP).
4. T urn on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear . The POP has been removed. 5. Reinstall the backup battery and the battery pack. (B) If an SVP has been set and is known by the service technician: 1.
Screen blank mode If the time set on the “T urn off monitor” timer in the operating system e xpires, the LCD backlight turns off. T o put the computer into scr een blank mode, do as follows: 1. P ress Fn+F3. A panel for selecting a power plan (in Windows XP , power scheme) appears.
• The system status, RAM, VRAM, and setup data are stored on the hard disk. • The syst em is power ed off. Note: If the computer enters the hibernation mode while it is docked to the docking station, do not undock it before resuming normal operation.

FRU replacement notices External CRU statement to customers: Some problems with your product can be resolved with a replacement part you can install yourself, called a “Cust omer Replaceable Unit” or “CRU . ” Some CRUs ar e designated as Self-service CRUs and others are designated as Optional-service CRUs.
• T or que driver If you have a t orque driver , r efer to the “T or que” column for each st ep. • Mak e sure that you use the correct screw . If you have a t orque screwdriver , tight en all screws rmly to the tor que shown in the table. Never use a scr ew that you removed.
If the MTM and P roduct ID numbers differ fr om each other on the r ear label, use what is shown for the Pr oduct ID eld. See example below: MTM on rear label: TTTT -C T O S/N SSSSSSS Pr oduct ID on r ear label: TTTT -MMM (Use this number when setting Serial Number) In the example, the Serial Number to be input is '1S TTTTMMMSSSSSSS'.
If the system boar d is being replaced, try t o read the EC A information from the old syst em board and tr ansfer the information t o the new system. If the syst em boar d is inoper able, this will not be possible.
Chapter 8. Removing and replacing a FRU External CRU statement to customers: Some problems with your product can be resolved with a replacement part you can install yourself, called a “Cust omer Replaceable Unit” or “CRU . ” Some CRUs ar e designated as Self-service CRUs and others are designated as Optional-service CRUs.
Before servicing ThinkP ad T400s, T410s, and T410si Removing the SIM car d: Some models of the ThinkP ad T400s, T410s, and T410si you are servicing might have the SIM card that the customer has installed. If the comput er you are servicing has the SIM card, remove it befor e you start the servicing.
1010 Battery pack Important notice for r eplacing a battery pack: Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbo x (in Windows 7) and L enovo System T oolbox (in Windows Vista and Windows XP) have an aut omatic batt ery diagnostic that determines if the battery pack is defective.
