12 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Description of Operation S tate Programming The MicroT ech II UVC takes advantage of “s tate” machine programming to define and control unit ventilator operation. “State” defines specific states or modes of operation for each process within the unit ventilator (e.
McQuay OM 751 13 Description of Operation Figure 6: Complete UVC—state diagram UVC Unit Modes The UVC provides several “normal” modes of unit operation.
14 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation T able 8: UVC state names and nu mbers OFF Mode (St ate 9) Off mode is provided so that the UVC can be forced into a powered OFF condition. OFF mode is a “stop” state for the unit ventilator; it is not a power off state.
McQuay OM 751 15 Description of Operation Night Purge Mode (St ate 8) Night Purge mode is provided as a means to mo re easily and quickly ve ntilate a space. Night purge can be useful in helping to remove odor build up at the end of each day , or after cleaning, painting, or other odor generating operations occur within the space.
16 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Emergency Heat Mode (Super St ate) The Emergency Heat mode is provided for situ ations where the UVC is in a mode that does not normally allow heating, such as OFF , Cool, Night Purge, or Fan Only .
McQuay OM 751 17 Description of Operation Auto Mode Auto mode is provided so that the UVC can be set to automati cally determine if heating or cooling is required. Auto mode is the default power-up UVC mode. Auto mode is made up of the Heat and Cool modes.
18 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Note – The OAD is considered to be in “alarm” when the OAD is forced below the active minimum position in the Low Limit state. This is not an actual unit “alarm” or “fault” condition, but only a condition used for the pur pose of transition arguments.
McQuay OM 751 19 Description of Operation Figure 12: Cool mode super state diagram Econ State (S tate 3) The Econ state is a “normal” state during Cool mode. The Ec on state typically is active in the Cool mode when primary cooling (economizer) is available and adequate to meet the cooling requirements.
20 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Figure 13: Econ stat e operation (occupie d mode and auto fan) Econ Mech State (S tate 1) The Econ Mech state is a “normal” state during Cool mode.
McQuay OM 751 21 Description of Operation The CO 2 demand controlled ventilation function (op tional) is active (see “CO 2 Demand Controlled V entilation (optional)” on page 34), and the OA damper is adjust ed as needed to maintain the CO 2 set point.
22 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation In each of these special purpos e UVC modes, if the space temperature drops below EHS and the Emergency Heat function is enabled, the UVC is forced into the Emergency Heat mode (see “Emergency Heat Mode (Sup er State)” on page 16) and then return once the Emer gency Heat function is satisfied.
McQuay OM 751 23 Description of Operation Unit Mode Priority The UVC uses the network variables and binary inputs listed in T able 10 and T able 11 to determine the current unit mode. Special purpose UVC unit modes have high er priority than the normal UVC unit modes as shown in the tables.
24 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Occup ancy Modes The UVC is provid ed with four occupan cy modes: O ccupied, Standby , Unoccu pied, and Bypass. The occupancy mode affects which h eating and cooling temp erature set points are used, affects IAF operation, and affects OAD operation.
McQuay OM 751 25 Description of Operation Byp ass Mode The bypass mode (also called T en ant Override) is the equivalen t of a temporary occupied mode. Once the bypass mode is initiated, it remains in effect for a set period of time (120 minutes, default).
26 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation S p ace T emperature Set Point s The UVC uses the six occupancy-based temperatur e set points as the basis to determine the Effective Set point Output. The ef fective set point is calculated based on the unit mo de, the occupancy mode, and the values of several network variables.
McQuay OM 751 27 Description of Operation Remote W all-Mounted Sensor with +/–3°F Adjustment (optional) When the optional remot e wall-mounted sensor with +/–3°F adjustm ent dial is used, the UVC effectively writes the value of the set point ad justment dial to the Set Point Offset Input variable.
28 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Figure 16: Effective set point calculations T able 15: Set point calculation ex amples Example A Given Occupanc yMode = Occupied or Byp assHeat/CoolMode = Heat S paceT empSetpoint = (not used) SetpointOf fset = (not used) = 0.
McQuay OM 751 29 Description of Operation Proportional Integral (PI) Control Loop s The MicroT ech II UVC uses PI-loop control for heating, cooling and ventil ation processes within the unit ventilator . Numerous PI al gorithms can be used depending upon the unit ventilator configuration.
30 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation PI Control Parameters Associated with each PI loop is a set of two adjustable pa rameters: Proport ional Band and Integral T ime. When the unit ve ntilator is properly sized for the space, the factory settings for these parameters provides the best and most robust control action (see Figure 20).
McQuay OM 751 31 Description of Operation In general, it is best to start with a relatively large proportional band setting (the fact ory default setting is best) and adjust to smaller values. If you want the sy stem to respond strongly to small changes in the space, adjust the proportional band to a higher set ting.
32 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Unoccupied Operation During unoccupied mode, the IA fan typically remains off and cycles with calls for heating and cooling.
McQuay OM 751 33 Description of Operation • Expanded (optional)—T emperature Comparison with OA Enthalp y Setpoint Economizer (Strategy 1) • Leading Edge (optional)— T em perature Comparison w.
34 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Networked Sp ace Humidity Sensor Capability A networked space humidity sensor can be netw ork interfaced with th e Space Humidity Input variable. When the Space Humidity Input variable is used (valid value), it automatically overrides the hard-wired space humidity sensor (if present).
McQuay OM 751 35 Description of Operation ASHRAE Cycle II The UVC supports ASHRAE Cycle II operation. The basis of ASHRAE Cycle II is to maintain the required minimum amoun t of ve ntilation whenever .
36 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Compressor Minimum On and Off Timers The UVC is provided with minimu m On (3-minute default) and minim um Off (5-minute default) timers to prevent adverse compressor cycling.
McQuay OM 751 37 Description of Operation External Binary Input s The UVC is provided with three binary inputs that provide the function s described below . Figure 24: Bina ry inputs These inputs each allow a single se t of dry contacts to be used as a signal to the UVC.
38 McQuay OM 751 Description of Operation Exhaust Interlock Input Sig nal This input allows a single set of dry contacts to be used to signal the UVC that an exhau st fan within the space is ener gized. The UVC reposi tions the OA damper to a user adjustable minimum position (Ex haust Interlock OA Damper Min Posi tion Setpoint).
McQuay OM 751 39 Description of Operation Exhaust Fan ON/OFF Signal This relay output provides one set of Normall y Open dry contacts that can be used to signal the operation of an exhaust fa n. When the OA damper opens more than the Energize Exhaust Fan OA Damper set point, then the relay output signals the exhaust fan ON (contacts closed).
40 McQuay OM 751 UVC Input and O utput T able UVC Input and Output T able All UVC input and outpu t connections and their correspo nding unit ventil ator usage are shown in the following table.
McQuay OM 751 41 Diagnost ics and Service Diagnostics and Service The most important aspect of tro ubleshooting unit ventilator controls is to isolate the source of the problem into one of two categories: 1 The problem resides within the UVC. 2 The problem is external to the UVC.
42 McQuay OM 751 Diagnostics and Se rvice Sp ace T emp Sensor Failure ( F0 ) The Space T emp Senso r Failure fault occurs when the UVC detects open or short conditions from the sens or . Effect: • Space fan de-ener gizes (unless in emergency heat mode).
McQuay OM 751 43 Diagnost ics and Service Condensate Overflow I ndication (optional) ( F4 ) The Condensate Overflow Indication fault will occur when the UVC detects high condensate levels within the units indoor coi l drain pan. Effect: • Compressor is immediately de-energized if in cooling.
44 McQuay OM 751 Diagnostics and Se rvice Sp ace Humidity Sensor Failure (optional) ( FA ) The Space Humidity Sensor Fail ure fault occurs when the UVC detects open or short conditions from the sensor . Effect: • IA/OA Enthalpy compar ison economizer (if used) is disabled.
McQuay OM 751 45 Diagnost ics and Service 3 Use the temperature reading from S tep 2 to determine the exp ected sensor resistance from Ta b l e 2 3 . 4 Using a calibrated ohmmeter , measure the act ual resistance across the two sensor leads. 5 Compare the expected resist ance to the actual resistance.
