4 Putting batteries in the remote control Before using the remote control, put tw o supplied batter ies first. 1 Press and slide the battery cover on the bac k of the remote control. 2 Insert batteries. Make sure to match the polarity: (+) to (+) and (–) to (–).

12 Basic operations 2 Select the source to play On the front panel: T urn SOURCE SELECT OR until the source name y ou want appear s on the display . The source lamp corresponding to the selected source lights in red.
13 3 Adjust the volume To increase the volume, turn MASTER V OLUME control c lockwise (or press V OLUME + on the remote control). To decrease the v olume , turn MASTER VOLUME control counter cloc kwise (or press V OLUME – on the remote control). • When you adjust the v olume, the volume le vel indication appears on the displa y for a while.
14 Adjusting the subwoofer audio position If the subwoof er sound is much reinforced f or stereo sound compared to the sound reproduced with multi-channel, set the subwoof er audio position. The subw oofer output le vel is automatically decreased by the selected v alue when you are listening in stereo .
15 Tu rning off the sounds temporarily From the remote control ONL Y : Press MUTING to turn off the sound through all connected speakers and headphones. “MUTING” appears on the display and the v olume tur ns off. To restore the sound, press MUTING again.
16 From the remote control ONL Y : 1 T ake your position where y ou listen to the sound. • Make sure speak er cables are connected firmly . 2 Press and hold SMART SURR OUND SETUP until “SETTING UP” flashes.
17 When your c lapping sound is detected successfully , • On the TV screen, “SUCCESSFUL, ” “RESUL T , ” and the setting v alues appear . The setting v alues are shown for about 10 seconds. 22 7 Setting the speaker distance The distance from your listening point to the speak ers is one of the impor tant elements to obtain the best possible sound eff ect from the Surround/DSP modes.
23 Setting bass sound 7 Setting subwoofer output—SUBWOOFER OUT Y ou can select the type of the signal which can be transmitted through the subwoof er .
24 Setting the digital input (DIGIT AL IN) terminals—DIGIT AL IN 1/2/3 When you use the digital input terminals, register what components are connected to which terminals—DIGIT AL IN 1/2/3 (see page 11) so that the correct source name will appear when y ou select the digital source .
25 Selecting the type of the input signal —DVD VIDEO INPUT/VCR VIDEO INPUT When you use the A V IN/OUT (SCAR T) terminals for connecting the D VD recorder (or D VD pla yer) or VCR, register the type of the input signal. If you ha ve not selected appropriate input signal types, you cannot view the pla yback picture on the TV .

30 Adjusting the equalization patterns —DIGIT AL EQ 63Hz/250Hz/1kHz/4kHz/16kHz Y ou can adjust equalization patterns in five frequency bands (center frequency: 63 Hz, 250 Hz, 1 kHz, 4 kHz, 16 kHz) for the front speakers . • Once you ha ve made an adjustment, it is memorized f or each source.
31 7 Making the center tone soft or sharp —CENTER TONE This setting is av ailable when one of the Surround/DSP modes is in use. T o activate Surround/DSP mode , see page 42. • This setting is common to all Surround modes, and is memorized separately f or DSP modes.
32 T uner operations When operating the receiver using the remote contr ol, set the mode selector to “A UDIO/TV/VCR/STB. ” T uning in to stations manually From the remote control ONL Y : 1 Press FM/AM to select the band. The last received station of the selected band is tuned in.

38 Creating realistic sound fields Reproducing theatre ambience In a movie theatre, man y speakers are located on the walls to reproduce impressive m ulti-channel sound, reaching you from all directions. With these many speak ers, sound localization and sound mov ement can be expressed.
39 ■ Dolby Surround Dolby Pro Logic II Dolby Pr o Logic II is a multi-channel playbac k format to convert 2-channel software into 5-channel (plus subwoof er). The matrix- based conv ersion method used for Dolb y Pro Logic II makes no limitation for the cutoff frequency of the surround treb le and enables stereo surround sound.
40 Introducing the DSP modes The sound heard in a concer t hall, club , etc. consists of direct sound and indirect sound—early reflections and reflections from behind. Direct sounds reach the listener directly without any reflection. On the other hand, indirect sounds are dela yed by the distances of the ceiling and walls.
41 Sound reproduced from normal stereo Sound reproduced from All Channel Stereo mode 3D HEADPHONE mode If you connect a pair of headphones while one of the DSP modes is in use, the 3D HEADPHONE mode is activ ated without respect to the type of software pla yed back.
