INST ALLA TION 1 Operate the TV set only from a power source as indicated on the TV set or refer to the operating instructions for this information. If you are not sur e of the type of power supply to your home, consult your TV set dealer or local power company .
8 An outside antenna system should not be located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or power circuits, or wher e it can fall into such power lines or circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extreme car e should be taken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contact with them might be fatal.
14 For added protection of the TV set during a lightning storm or when the TV set is to be left unattended for an extended period of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna. This will prevent damage to pr oduct due to lightning storms or power line surges.
WARNING Burn-in A characteristic of Plasma Display Panels (PDPs) is that displaying the same image for a long time causes a part of the image to stay on the screen (this is called phosphor burn-in). Avoid burn-in as follows. IMAGE SHIFT The picture displayed on the scr een is shifted up, down and to the left and right at regular intervals.
WARNING If Burn-in has occurred If burn-in occurs, try the BURN-IN IMAGE REDUCER function (page 50). If bur n-in is minimal it may gradually become less noticeable. Note: Once burn-in occurs it will never disappear completely . Point defects PDPs use collections of fine pixels to display images.

10 Quick Setup Unpacking your TV Thank you for your purchase of a JVC Color T elevision. Before you begin setting up your new television, please check to make sure you have all of the following items.
11 Quick Setup Attaching the stand to the TV Read the following instructions and then attach the supplied stand to the TV . WARNING: The TV is heavy . It should always be carried by at least two people. Attempting to carry it by yourself may lead to it being dropped causing injuries and damage.
12 Quick Setup TV/Receiver NOTE: Before you connect your r eceiver to another device, please refer to the proper diagrams for your specific TV and remote.

14 These quick setup pages will provide you, in four easy steps, with the basic information you need to begin using your new television right away . If you have questions, or for more detailed information on any of these steps, please consult other sections of this manual.
15 Use the supplied power cord which best suits the area in which you live. Quick Setup Getting Started Connecting the TV and receiver Use the supplied system cable to connect the TV to the receiver .
16 Before you can operate your r emote control, you first need to install the batteries (included). Slide the cover on the back of the remote down towar ds the bottom of the remote contr ol. Insert two batteries (included) carefully noting the “ + ” and “–” markings, placing the “–” end in the unit first.
17 Basic Operation T ur n the television on and off by pr essing the P OWER button at the top right corner of the remote. If this is the first time you are turning on the TV , the interactive plug-in menu appears. • T urn on the TV after connecting it to the other surrounding devices.
18 Please follow the flow chart below to determine which connection setup is right for you. Then, refer to the appr opriate diagrams to connect your receiver to other devices that you may have. After you are finished connecting your devices, plug the power cor d into the nearest power outlet and turn on the TV .
19 Quick Setup Connections Notes: • Use the S-Video connection if possible for superior pictur e quality . • Y our VCR must be tur ned on to view premium cable channels. Diagram #2 Note: • If you do not have a cable box, connect the cable wire from the wall outlet into the back of the receiver .
20 Quick Setup Connections Notes: • Green, blue and r ed are the most common colors for DVD cables. Some models may vary colors. Please consult the user ’ s manual for your DVD player for more information. • Be careful not to confuse the r ed DVD cable with the red audio cable.
21 JVC ’ s A V compu link featur e makes playing video tapes or DVDs totally automatic. Simply insert a pre-r ecorded tape into your JVC brand VCR or DVD into your JVC DVD player and the device will automatically turn on and begin playback.
22 SUB WOOFER OUT AUDIO OUT 1) Connect a white composite cable from the LEFT AUDIO OUTPUT on the back of the receiver to the LEFT AUDIO INPUT on the amplifier . 2) Connect a red composite cable fr om the RIGHT AUDIO OUTPUT on the back of the receiver to the RIGHT AUDIO INPUT on the amplifier .
23 Quick Setup Connections By inputting a high bandwidth digital content protection high definition pictur e source to the digital-in terminal of this television, high-definition pictures can be displayed on the scr een in their digital form.
24 Quick Setup Connections By connecting your A V Receiver to your television's V1 smart Input, you can watch picture sources fr om many diffeent devices, without having to change or use the other input connections on your TV . This allows you to free up other input connections so you can connect more devices to your television.
25 When you turn your television on for the first time the interactive plug-in menu will appear . The plug-in menu helps you to get your TV ready to use by letting you set your pr eferences for: • The language in which you want the onscreen menus to appear .
26 T o set your clock manually (without using the XDS signal), choose MANUAL. If you choose AUTO, see auto clock set above. ¥ T o choose MANUAL T o TIME ¥ T o set the hour T o minute ¥ T o set the minute T o Start Clock Manual Clock Set Note: • Y ou will have to reset the clock after a power interruption.
27 Quick Setup Plug-In Menu In auto tuner setup, the TV automatically scans thr ough all available channels, memorizing the active ones and skipping over blank ones or channels with weak signals. This means when you scan (using the C HANNEL +/ – buttons) you will r eceive only clear , active channels.
28 Y ou can program your r emote to operate your cable box, satellite receiver , VCR or DVD player by using the instructions and codes listed below . If the equipment does not respond to any of the codes listed below or to the code search function, use the r emote control supplied by the manufacturer .
29 The remote contr ol is programmed with VCR codes for power on/off, play , stop, fast-forward, rewind, pause, r ecord, channel up/down operation. 1) Find the VCR brand from the list of codes shown below . 2) Slide the first 2-way selector switch to “ TV ” and the other 2-way selector switch to “ VCR ” .
30 The remote contr ol is programmed with DVD codes for power on/off, play , stop, fast-forward, rewind, pr evious/next chapter , tray open/close, and still/pause operation. 1) Find the DVD player brand fr om the list of codes shown below . 2) Slide the first 2-way selector switch to “ TV ” and the other 2-way selector switch to “ DVD ” .
31 Remote Pr ogramming Cable/Satellite Search Codes Function 1) Slide the first 2-W ay Mode Selector switch to CA TV . 2) Press and hold down the P OWER button, then pr ess the R ETUR N +/TV button for more than three seconds. 3) Release the R ETURN +/TV button, then release the P OWER button.
32 T o bring up the onscreen menu , pr ess the M ENU button on the remote control. The item that appears in green is the one curr ently selected. If you use the Menu button on the TV ’ s front panel instead of the remote, an additional menu scr een showing INPUT and ASPECT will appear between INITIAL SETUP and PICTURE ADJUST .
33 Onscr een Menus Y our television comes with JVC ’ s onscreen menu system. The onscr een menus let you make adjustments to your television ’ s operation simply and quickly . Examples of the onscreen menus are shown on the next page. Detailed explanations on using each menu follow later in this guide.

35 Initial Setup Auto T uner Setup The auto tuner setup function is described on page 27 as the interactive plug-in menu. If you need to run the auto tuner setup again, follow the steps below .
36 Initial Setup When a viewer attempts to watch a guarded channel, the following message appears: T o watch a channel that you have locked, enter the Lock Code using the 10 key pad. If the wrong code is enter ed, the message “ INVALID LOCK CODE! ” will flash on the scr een.
37 Initial Setup Y ou can block programs that ar e not rated. Press the M ENU button T o V -CHIP ¥ T o operate (The lock icon appears) Pr ess Z ERO to access V -Chip setup opti.
38 Initial Setup U.S. P ARENT AL RA TING SYSTEMS Programs with the following ratings ar e appropriate for children. ❒ TV Y is Appropriate for All Children Programs ar e created for very young viewers and should be suitable for all ages, including children ages 2 - 6.
39 Initial Setup Line up the cursor in the column (TV PG, TV G, etc.) with the content row (V/FV , S, etc.) and press the or ¥ to move the cursor to the correct location. Pr ess O K to tur n the locking feature on or of f. An item is locked if the icon appears instead of a “ — ” .
40 Initial Setup ❒ NR – Not Rated This is a film which has no rating. In many cases these films were imported fr om countries which do not use the MP AA ratings system. Other NR films may be from amateur producers who didn ’ t intend to have their film widely released.
41 Initial Setup Pr ess the M ENU button T o V -CHIP ¥ T o operate (The lock icon appears) Pr ess Z ERO to access V -Chip setup options T o SET CANADIAN RA TING.
42 Initial Setup Channel guard and V -Chip settings are pr otected by a four -digit lock code. Y our TV comes pre-set with a lock code of “ 0000 ” . Y ou may change the code to any four -digit number you wish. T o change the lock code, follow the steps below .
43 This function lets you preview the many dif ferent viewing modes of your TV . It will cycle through “ index ” , “ split demo ” , “ freeze ” , all of the differ ent “ aspect ” ratios and all of the differ ent “ video status ” modes.
44 The DIGIT AL-IN option can only be displayed in the INITIAL SETUP menu when a 480p picture signal is being input to the DIGIT AL-IN terminal. This option adjusts the position when a 480p picture signal is being displayed on the scr een. There ar e two types of 480p picture signals: 640x480 and 720x480.
45 The picture displayed on the scr een is shifted up, down and to the left and right at regular intervals. In order to pr event bur n-in, set this function to F AST or ST ANDARD.
46 Many broadcasts now include an onscr een display of dialog called closed captions. Some broadcasts may also include displays of additional information in text form. Y our television can access and display this information using the closed caption feature.
47 Initial Setup This allows you to lock the keys on the front of the TV , so that a child may not accidentally change your viewing prefer ences. Press the M ENU button T o FRONT P ANEL LOCK .
48 Auto Shut Off XDS ID Display provides a channel ’ s call letters, the network ’ s name, and even a program name. The XDS ID information is pr ovided by the broadcaster .
49 Press the M ENU button T o TINT , COLOR, PICTURE, BRIGHT or DET AIL ¥ T o enter ¥ T o adjust the setting T o move to the next setting Press the M ENU button when finished These settings allow you to change and adjust the way the picture appears on your television.
50 Pictur e Adjust Color Management With digital noise clear , this helps take our static or noise from a channel that may not be coming in clearly . Press the M ENU button T o DIG.
51 MTS technology allows several audio signals to be br oadcast at once, giving you a choice in what you wish to hear with a TV program. In addition to mono or ster eo sound, an MTS br oadcast may also include a second audio program (SAP) .
52 Clock/Timers Set Clock The set clock function is described on page 26 as the interactive plug-in menu. Y ou can choose to set the clock automatically , or manually .
53 The on/off timer lets you pr ogram your television to tur n itself on or off. Y ou can use it as an alarm to wake up, to help you remember important pr ograms, or as a decoy when you ’ re not home.
54 Y our television has two kinds of screen: SPLIT (2 channels) and INDEX (12 channels). A channel and input will now appear onscreen. The channel (or input) you were watching befor e pressing S PLIT will appear on the left, the input will appear on the right.
55 Button Functions This allows you to quickly look at up to 12 channels at a time so that you can decide which one to watch. Notes: • Only RF input signal will be displayed.
56 Button Functions T ur ns the TV on or off. Press the P OWER button Use the number buttons on the remote contr ol to move directly to a specific channel. For example, to move to channel 7: 0 (Zero) 7 (Seven) Power Number Buttons - 10Key Pad Use the 100+ button to directly access channels above channel 99.
57 The return+/TV button has three functions: Return - Retur ns to the channel viewed just befor e the channel currently onscreen. Return+ - Lets you program a specific channel to return to while scanning through the channels using the CH+ and CH – buttons.
58 The M UTING button instantly turns the volume down completely when you press it. Press M UTING and the volume level will instantly go to zero. T o restore the volume to its pr evious level, press M UTING again. Muting The V ideo status button gives you a choice of four TV picture display settings, including a display of your own prefer ences.
59 Button Functions The Sleep Timer can turn the TV off for you after you fall asleep. Pr ogram it to work in intervals of 15 minutes, for a total time of up to 180 minutes.
60 This feature will help you adjust the pictur e you are watching to give you the best possible picture quality . REGULAR - The regular ratio is used when you want to watch a 4:3 broadcast or recor ded program without modifying the original picture to fit the dimensions of your 16:9 screen.
61 The M ENU button allows you to access JVC ’ s onscreen menu system. Pr ess M ENU to activate the onscreen menu system. • See individual topics like “ Sound Adjust ” for specific information on using menus. Menu C.C. (Closed Caption) Button Functions Back OK Use the C.
62 Use either the television ’ s own tuner or a cable box to select channels. Set this switch to TV to operate the television ’ s built-in tuner . Move the switch to CA TV to operate a cable box. Note: • See page 28 for information on programming your r emote for cable box operation.
63 T roubleshooting PROBLEMS CHECK There is no power - Check for a blown fuse or circuit br eaker or a power outage. - Check that the plugs on the power cords fr om the TV and receiver are connected to wall outlets. The power lamps do not light even though the TV is on Check that POWER INDICA TOR in the MENU is not set to OFF .
64 T roubleshooting The following are not malfunctions. • The television may make a creaking sound if the temperature of the r oom or the temperature of the inside of the television changes. If ther e is no problem with the screen or sound, then there is no need to worry .
65 Caring for the Cabinet Normally , light dusting with a soft, non-scratching duster will keep your TV clean. If you wish to wipe down the television, first unplug it. Then wipe gently with a soft cloth, slightly moistened with water . Y ou can add a few drops of mild liquid detergent to the water to help remove spots of oily dirt.
