9 Placing speakers Front speakers and center speak er • Place these speakers (position of the mid-range speaker units) a t the same height from the floor . • Point these speakers aiming at the listener ’ s ears. Surround and surr ound back speakers • Place these speakers at a position which is 1 meter higher than the listener ’ s ears.
10 Connecting Audio/V ideo Components When connecting indi vidual components, refer also to the manuals supplied with them. Analog Connections If your audio components hav e digital audio output terminal, connecting them using the digital cords explained in “ Digital Connections ” (see page 13) will giv e you better sound quality .
11 V ideo component connections Use the cables with RCA pin plugs (not supplied). Connect the white plug to the audio left jack, the red plug to the audio right jack, and the yello w plug to the video jack. • If your video components have S-video (Y/C-separation) terminals, connect them using an S-video cable (not supplied).
12 • When you connect a D VD player with its analog discrete output (5.1-channel repr oduction) jacks: T o listen to the sound after connection, press D VD MUL TI.
13 DIGITAL IN DIGITAL 1 (DVD) DIGITAL 2 (CD) DIGITAL 3 (TV) DIGITAL 4 (CDR) PCM/ DOLBY DIGITAL / DTS DIGITAL OUT Digital Connections This receiv er is equipped with four DIGIT AL IN terminals — one digital coaxial terminal and three digital optical terminals — and one DIGIT AL OUT (optical) terminal on the rear .
14 Basic Operations The following operations are commonly used when you play any sound sources. Opera tions hereafter will be explained using the b uttons on the front panel. Y ou can also use the buttons on the remote control for the same functions if they ha ve the same and similar names/marks.

16 Activating and Adjusting the Subwoofer Sound Y ou can cancel the subwoofer sound ev en though you have connected a subwoofer and ha ve set “ SUB WOOFER ” to “ YES ” (see page 29). This is useful when enjo ying surround sound at night. Press SUBWOOFER OUT ON/OFF to cancel the subw oofer sound output.

Press INPUT DIGIT AL (or ANALOG/DIGIT AL INPUT on the remote contr ol) to select “ DGTL AU T O . ” The DIGIT AL A UTO indicator lights up on the display . • When selecting “ DIGIT AL A UTO, ” the following indicators indicate the digital signal format of the incoming signal.
18 T ur ning Analog Dir ect On and Off Y ou can enjoy the sound closer to the original source by ov erriding the sound adjustments such as speaker output le vel adjustments (see page 30), Digital Equalization (see page 30), Surround and DSP modes (see pages 32 to 37), Bass Boost (see page 19) and Midnight Mode (see page 17).
19 The f ollowing basic operations are possible only using the remote contr ol. Reinfor cing the Bass Y ou can boost the bass level. • Once you hav e made adjustment, it is memorized for each source. 1. Press SOUND. The 10 keys are acti vated for sound adjustments.
20 Receiving Radio Br oadcasts Y ou can browse through all the stations or use the preset function to go immediately to a par ticular station. T uning in to Stations Manually 1. Press FM or AM to select the band. The last receiv ed station of the selected band is tuned in.
21 T o tune in to a pr eset station On the front panel: 1. Press FM or AM to select the band. The last receiv ed station of the selected band is tuned in. 2. Press FM/AM PRESET 5 or ∞ until you f ind the channel y ou want. • Pressing FM/AM PRESET 5 increases the number .
22 PS Canceled PTY RT Searching for a Pr ogram by PTY Codes One of the advantages of the RDS service is that you can locate a particular kind of program from the preset channels (see page 20) by specifying the PTY codes. T o sear ch for a program using the PTY codes Befor e you start, r emember .

24 Setting the Speakers Configuration Quick Speaker Setup helps you to easily and quickly register the speaker size and speaker distance accor ding to your listening room to create the best possible surround ef fect. • Y ou can also register each speaker ’ s information manually .
25 Speakers (channels) number and size Y ou can find how each of the speak er size is defined according to the number of connected speakers (speaker channel (CH) number) you select.

27 Setting the Speaker Distance The distance from your listening point to the speakers is another important element to obtain the best possible sound of the Surround and DSP modes.
28 7 Low frequency effect attenuator —LFE A TTENUA TE If the bass sound is distorted while playing back software encoded with Dolby Digital or DTS, set the LFE lev el to eliminate distortion. Select one of the follo wing: 0dB: Normally select this. − − − − − 10dB: Select when the bass sound is distorted.
29 Adjusting Sound Y ou can make sound adjustment to your preference after completing basic setting. Basic Pr ocedur e Befor e you start, r emember ... There is a time limit in doing the follo wing steps. If the setting is canceled before you finish, start from step 1 again.
30 Adjusting the Speaker Output Levels Y ou can adjust the speaker output levels. The test tone comes out of each speaker except subw oofer to check the output level balance when using the Surround mode. • Once you hav e made an adjustment, it is memorized for each source.
31 Y ou can also use the remote control for adjusting the speaker output lev el. When using the remote control, you can make an adjustment while listening to test tone. 1. Press SOUND. The 10 keys are acti vated for sound adjustments. 2. Press TEST to check if you can hear the sounds through all the speakers at equal le vel.
32 Using the Sur r ound Modes This unit activates a variety of Surround modes automatically . The basic settings and adjustments stor ed (see pages 24 to 31) are applied. Reproducing Theater Ambience In a movie theater , many speakers are located on the walls to reproduce impressiv e multi-surround sounds, reaching you from all directions.
33 DTS 96/24 In recent years, there has been increasing interest in higher sampling rates both for recording and for reproducing at home. Higher sampling rates allo w wider frequency range and greater bit depths provide e xtended dynamic range.
34 Surr ound Modes Applicable to the V arious Softwar e A vailable Surround modes v ary depending on the speaker settings and the incoming signals. The table below sho ws the relation of the Surround modes and the incoming signals (with the surround back speakers and EX/ES se tting).

37 VOLUME LINEAR PCM DIGIT AL L SUBWFR LS RS CR LFE DIGIT AL AUTO DSP SPEAKERS 1 ALL Channel Stereo mode This mode can reproduce a larger stereo sound f ield using all the connected (and acti vated) speakers. This mode cannot be used without activating the surr ound speakers.

39 COMPU LINK Remote Contr ol System The COMPU LINK remote control system allows you to operate JVC ’ s audio components through the remote sensor on the r eceiver .
40 Operating JVC ’ s Audio/V ideo Components Y ou can operate JVC ’ s audio and video components with this receiver ’ s remote control, since control signals for JVC ’ s components are preset in the remote control. T uner Y ou can always perform the following operations: FM/AM: Alternate between FM and AM (MW).
41 CD changer After pressing CD DISC, you can perform the follo wing operations on a CD changer: 3 : Start playing. 4 : Return to the beginning of the current (or pre vious) track. ¢ : Skip to the beginning of the ne xt track. 7 : Stop playing or recording.
42 VCR Y ou can always perform the follo wing operations: VCR : T urn on or off a VCR. After pressing VCR (or VCR CONTR OL), you can perform the following operations on a VCR: 1 – 9, 0: Select the TV channels on a VCR. 3 : Start playing. REW: Re wind a tape.
43 Operating Other Manufactur ers ’ V ideo Equipment This remote control supplied with the receiver can transmit control signals for other manufacturers ’ TVs, CA TV conver ters, DBS tuners, VCRs and DVD players. When operating the other manufacturers ’ components, refer also to the manuals supplied with them.
44 T o change the transmittable signals for operating a CA TV conver ter or DBS tuner 1. Press and hold CA TV/DBS . 2. Press CA TV/DBS CONTR OL. 3. Enter a manufacturer ’ s code using buttons 1 – 9, and 0. See the list on the right column to find the code.

47 T r oubleshooting Use this char t to help you solve daily operational problems. If there is any problem you cannot solve, contact your JVC ’ s ser vice center . SOLUTION Plug the power cord into an AC outlet. Check speaker wiring and reconnect if necessary.
