P age 10 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 2. PLA YING THE PIANO 1) BASIC OPERA TIONS This section provides the basic procedures f or turning the power on and pla ying the CN piano.
P age 11 2 PLA YING THE PIANO DEMO SONGS The CN31 includes 27 b uilt-in sound demo songs. Each of the demo songs presents a musical piece to introduce the diff erent preset sounds. Step1 Press the CONCER T MA GIC and LESSON buttons simultaneously .
P age 12 2 PLA YING THE PIANO SELECTING A PRESET SOUND Step1 Press the SOUND SELECT b utton below the name of the instrument to be pla yed. When the button is pressed, the LED indicator will turn on, indicating that this sound has been selected.
P age 13 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 2) DU AL The DU AL function allows two preset sounds to be lay ered together , creating a more comple x sound. For e xample, a piano can be la yered with strings, or a church organ with a choir sound. Step1 Press and hold down a SOUND SELECT b utton to select the fi rst desired sound.
P age 14 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 3) SPLIT The SPLIT function divides the ke yboard into two sections—upper and low er—allowing each par t to be play ed with a diff erent sound. Step1 Press the SPLIT b utton. The LED indicator f or the SPLIT button will turn on.

Room 1 Room 2 Stage Hall 1 Hall 2 5) EFFECTS/REVERB When selecting some preset sounds , the LED indicator f or the EFFECTS or REVERB b uttons may tur n on automatically . This is because certain preset sounds are prepared with an effect enab led as their default setting.
P age 18 2 PLA YING THE PIANO ADDING O THER EFFECTS ¡ CHOR US Chorus is an effect that simulates the rich character of a v ocal choir or string ensemble, enriching the original voice b y ov er-lay ering a slightly detuned version of the sound. ¡ DELA Y Dela y is an effect that adds echoes to the sound.

P age 20 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 7) TRANSPOSING THE PIANO The transpose function allows the piano’ s ke ys to be raised or low ered in half steps. This is par ticular ly useful when accompanying instruments with diff erent tones, or when a song learned in one key must be pla yed in another ke y .
P age 21 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 8) PLA YING WITH CONCER T MA GIC The great German composer Johann Sebastian Bach once said "Pla ying the keyboard is simple . Just strike the right keys at the right time" . Many pianists wish it were quite that straightf orward.

P age 24 2 PLA YING THE PIANO STEAD Y BEA T Steady Beat allows Concert Magic songs to be played b y simply tapping any k ey with a constant steady beat, regardless of the song arrangement type. Step1 Press and hold the CONCER T MA GIC button. The displa y will show the current Concer t Magic mode (C-1).
P age 25 2 PLA YING THE PIANO CONCER T MA GIC PLA YBA CK SPEED The TEMPO button is also used to adjust the playbac k speed of Concer t Magic songs. Step1 After selecting a Concer t Magic song to pla y bac k, press and hold the TEMPO button. The tempo value will be sho wn in the display .
P age 26 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 9) METR ONOME Rh ythm is one of the most impor tant elements when lear ning music. It is impor tant to practice pla ying the piano at the correct tempo and with a steady rh ythm. The CN piano's metronome tool helps lear ners to achiev e this by providing a steady beat to pla y along with.

LESSON FUNCTION The CN31’ s Lesson function helps performers to practice the piano with a collection of etudes from Czerny and Burgmüller , or songs from Alfred’ s Basic Piano Librar y and Alfred’ s Premiere Piano Course lesson books (USA, Canada, A ustralia and UK only).
P age 29 LESSON FUNCTION 3 2) LISTENING T O AND PLA YING A SONG Step1 Press the PLA Y/ST OP b utton to pla y the selected song. There will be a one bar count-in bef ore the song star ts to play . Press the PLA Y/ST OP button to stop and reset the song.
P age 30 LESSON FUNCTION 3 3) RECORDING A SONG PRA CTICE While in Lesson mode, song practice can be recorded f or playback and self-e valuation. The pre-recorded left and right-hand par ts will be heard while the song practice is recorded. As noted previously , the BALANCE slider ma y be used to mute either pre-recorded left or right-hand par ts.
P age 31 RECORDER 4 4. RECORDER The RECORDER function records perf or mances in a similar wa y to that of a tape recorder . Howe ver , the CN piano records songs as digital data, instead of audio data - storing the music inside the instrument.
P age 32 RECORDER 4 Step2 Star t to pla y the piano . The recorder will automatically star t recording with the fi rst note pla yed. During this time, the LED indicators f or the REC and PLA Y/STOP b uttons will be tur ned on. Any changes made to the sound while recording will also be recorded.
P age 33 RECORDER 4 Step2 Star t to pla y the piano . While recording the second par t, the pre viously recorded first part will also pla y . Dur ing this time, the LED indicators f or the REC button and PLA Y/ST OP button will be turned on.
P age 34 RECORDER 4 2) PLA YING BA CK A SONG The PLA Y/ST OP button is used to star t and stop playbac k of the recorded song, and to also select which song and par t is play ed. Step1 Press the PLA Y/ST OP b utton to star t pla ying the recorded song.
P age 35 RECORDER 4 3) ERASING A SONG This function allows an y songs that are no longer listened to, to be cleared. Step1 Hold down the REC and PLA Y/ST OP buttons .

P age 37 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 1) TUNING The TUNING function allows the piano’ s pitch to be fi nely adjusted, and may prov e useful when playing with other instruments. Step1 Hold down the T OUCH and TRANSPOSE buttons and press the PIANO 1 b utton.
P age 38 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 2) TEMPERAMENT The CN piano off ers immediate access to a variety of musical temperaments popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It may pro ve interesting and educational to e xperiment with different temperaments , other than the modern ‘equal temperament’ standard this is dominant in music toda y .
P age 39 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 Step2 Use the V ALUE buttons to change the type of temper ament. When the power is turned off , the temperament will reset to the factory default ‘equal temperament (piano only)’ type.
P age 40 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 MIDI O VER VIEW The term MIDI is an acron ym f or Musical Instrument Digital Interf ace, an international standard for connecting synthesizers , sequencers (MIDI recorders) and other electronic instr uments so that they can e xchange performance data.
P age 41 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 3) MIDI CHANNEL This function is used to determine on which MIDI channel the CN piano will exchange MIDI inf or mation with e xter nal MIDI devices and instruments or a personal computer . The selected channel will function as both the transmit and receiv e channel.
P age 42 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 4) TRANSMIT PR OGRAM CHANGE ON/OFF This function determines whether or not the CN piano will transmit program change inf or mation when pressing the SOUND SELECT b uttons. When tr ansmit program change is tur ned on, pressing the SOUND SELECT buttons will send the prog ram change numbers as listed below .
P age 43 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 In addition to the SOUND SELECT buttons , other button operations such as touch curve , dual, digital effects and re verb settings can be transmitted as MIDI e xclusive data when the corresponding buttons are pushed. When set to off , no program change or other panel inf or mation will be transmitted via MIDI.
P age 44 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 5) LOCAL CONTR OL ON/OFF This function determines whether the CN piano’s sound will be pla yed from the piano’ s ke yboard (‘ON’) or only from an e xter nal MIDI instrument (‘OFF’).
P age 45 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 6) MUL TI-TIMBRAL MODE ON/OFF This function allows the CN piano to receiv e data on more than one MIDI channel simultaneously . In this mode, the CN piano can pla y different musical parts with different sounds f or each par t.
P age 46 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 7) CHANNEL MUTE This function determines which MIDI channels are activated to receive MIDI information when multi-timbr al mode is set to ON. Each of the 16 channels can be individually activated or deactiv ated. Step1 Hold down the T OUCH and TRANSPOSE buttons and press the STRINGS b utton.
P age 47 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 8) SENDING PR OGRAM CHANGE NUMBERS This function allows the CN piano to send prog ram change numbers be yond the 32 pre-defined numbers transmitted b y the SOUND SELECT buttons. Using this function, any number from 1 to 128 can be sent.
P age 48 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 9) LO WER OCT A VE SHIFT This function allows the lo wer par t to be raised by one , two , or three octav es when using SPLIT mo de.
P age 49 FUNCTION BUTT ONS 5 10) LO WER PED AL ON/OFF This function determines if the sustain pedal will be active f or lower par t sound when in SPLIT mode. The def ault setting is off , which means the sustain pedal is not active f or lower part sound.
