6 Intr oduction Thank you for purchasing the Kor g MR-1000 1-bit professional mobile recor der . In order to take full advantage of your new equipment, please read this manual car efully and use the product as dir ected. When you've read the manual, keep it safe for future r eference.
7 P ar ts of the MR-1000 Front panel 1 2 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 3 1. Recording level L/R knobs These adjust the recor ding level. Set the display to the level meter screen so you can watch the levels, and make adjustments while watching the peak LED (3.
8 8. Headphone jack Y ou can connect a set of headphones here. 9. V olume knob This adjusts the volume of the headphone jack. 10. Battery LED When operating on batteries, this LED will light red if the r emaining battery capacity is low . 11. P-dial This is a dial with a push-switch function.
9 3. Phantom power switch This switch provides +48V power to devices such as condenser mics. This power is sup- plied only to the XLR inputs. T urn this off if you're using dynamic mics or line input sour ces. Y ou can damage your equipment by connecting or disconnecting a condenser mic while the phantom power switch is in the ON position.
10 Screens and operations Level meter screen and men u list (MENU) screen When you power-on the MR-1000, the display will show the level meter scr een. While the display is showing the level meter screen, pr essing the menu button will show the menu list (MENU) screen which lets you pr oceed to various types of settings or informational screen.
11 Basic operation 1. P o wer and usage If you're using the MR-1000 in a location wher e AC power is available, use the included AC adaptor . If you're using it while moving or for outdoor recor ding, you can use separately sold alkaline batteries (LR6), Oxyride batteries, or nickel metal-hydride batteries.
12 Battery remaining indication The battery icon in the level meter screen shows an appr oximate indication of the amount of power remaining in the batteries.
13 2. Connecting y our monitor equipment Connect stereo headphones to the headphone jack. Connect your monitor system to the output jacks. Y ou can use either the XLR or RCA jacks. Use the volume knob to adjust the volume. Connecting headphones will not cut the sound from the output jacks.
14 4. Playing bac k the demo project The MR-1000 contains a high-quality demo project that was r ecorded in DFF(DSDIFF) format. Here's how to play back this pr oject. What is a project? When you recor d on the MR-1000, two files are created; an audio file and a pr oject file (containing protection data and markers, etc.
15 5. The le vel meter screen When you turn on the power , the level meter screen is shown in the display . When the menu list (MENU) screen is shown, you can also access the level meter scr een by pressing the menu button. This screen shows information such as the MR-1000's operating status and r ecording/play- back format.
16 6. Recording When you recor d on the MR-1000, date and time information is automatically added to the file so that you can manage your projects mor e easily . If you set the MR-1000's date and time ( → p.28), the correct date and time data will be added.
17 2. Use the P-dial to select and confirm the Project T ype . A check mark will appear in the check box for the project type you selected and confirmed. Y ou can choose from W A V (BWF), DFF , DSF , and WSD. For details on each type, refer to "Project r ecording format" (p.
18 Starting and stopping recording Each time you recor d on the MR-1000, a folder is created containing an audio file and a settings file, collectively called a "project." The folder is named automatically ( → p.45). Y ou can edit this name after you've finished recor ding ( → p.
19 7. Other playbac k/record operations Selecting and playing bac k a project/file Y ou can use the rewind and fast-forwar d buttons or the P-dial to select the project/file that you want to play .
20 3. The selection icon is shown at the currently selected project/file. Use the P-dial to select and confirm the desired project/file. The display will show the editing screen for the curr ent file. Push Play/P ause Button or 4. Press the play button to begin pla ying the selected project/file.
21 Using marks within a pr oject If you've made an extended recor ding, such as of a live performance or a practice session, you can move between songs or to a desired location by moving while you listen to the sound or by fast-forwarding or r ewinding according to the counter time.
22 Regardless of the screen sho wn in the display , y ou can press the re wind or fast-for - ward b utton during pla yback to mo ve to the time location of the pre vious or next mark.
23 Push Push When you've finished making settings, press the P-dial several times to r eturn to the Mark Edit screen. Deleting a mark (Delete Mark) 1. When you use the P-dial to select and confirm "Delete Mark," a dialog screen will ask y ou to confirm the deletion.
24 8. Other general operations Changing the meter peak hold and the counter mode 1. From the level meter screen, press the P-dial. The meter/counter (Meter/Counter) screen will appear . 2. Use the P-dial to select and confirm "Meter P eak Hold" (peak indicator hold time).
25 2. Use the P-dial to select and confirm the project/file whose name you want to edit. (See "Selecting and playing bac k a project/file," p.19) If you want to edit the name of the currently selected pr oject/file, simply press the P-dial twice to confirm.
26 Conserving battery power If you're using with the MR-1000 operating on battery power , you can reduce power consump- tion by turning off unneeded cir cuitry .
27 A uto shutdown setting If no operations have been performed for the length of time you specify here, the shutdown screen will appear automatically , and the power will turn off several seconds after that. This will prevent the battery fr om running down in the event you forget to turn of f the power .
28 Setting the date and time If you set the MR-1000's date and time, the recor ded files will have the correct date and time stamp. Here's how to set the internal clock. 1. Press the menu button, and in the menu list (MENU) screen, use the P-dial to select and confirm "SYSTEM.
29 Protecting a pr oject Here's how to pr otect a project. If you edit the name or delete or edit the mark settings of a project that is pr otected, these settings will revert to their original state when you select an- other project or turn of f the power .
30 3. The project/file edit screen will appear , with the name of the currently selected and confirmed project/file sho wn at the time . 4. Use the P-dial to select and confirm "Delete ." A screen will ask you to confirm the Delete operation.
31 Other functions Pla y mode The MR-1000 provides thr ee play modes, as well as shuffle and repeat play settings. T o select these mode, use "PLA Y MODE" in the menu list (MENU) scr een. Current Proj/File (pla y only one pr oject/file) In this mode, only the single project/file you select will play .
32 1. Press the menu button, and in the menu list (MENU) screen, use the P-dial to select and confirm "PLA Y MODE." The play mode select (PLA Y MODE) scr een will appear . 2. Use the P-dial to select and confirm the playback method y ou want to use.
33 Pla y list (PLA Y LIST) Creating a play list After creating a play list, you can select "Play List" as the play mode, and the pr ojects/files will be played in the order specified by the list. The r epeat and shuffle settings of the Play Mode can affect the playback of the PlayList.
34 Viewing a pla y list Here's how to view the contents of a play list. Press the menu button, and in the menu list (MENU) scr een, use the P-dial to select and con- firm "PLA Y LIST .
35 4 . The Mo ve icon will appear in the play list (PLA Y LIST) screen. 5 . T urn the P-dial to move the project/file to the desired position, and then press the dial to confirm. The play list (PLA Y LIST) scr een will show the new order . If you press the menu button befor e you confirm, you will return to the play list edit screen.
36 4. The screen dialog will ask "Remove All. Are you sure?" Push Push Push Play list edit screen 5. Use the P-dial to select and confirm [Y es]. If you decide not to execute this operation, use the P-dial to select and confirm [No] (or press the menu button), and you will r eturn to the play list edit screen.
37 WSD This is a 1-bit audio file format defined by the "1-bit Audio Consortium." The name stands for W ideband Single-bit Data (file extension .wsd). Settings when W A V (BWF) is selected If you select W A V (BWF), you can also select the sampling frequency and bit depth.
38 System settings (SYSTEM) Here you can make various system settings for the MR-1000 itself. Press the menu button to access the menu list (MENU) scr een.
39 DSD output filter settings (DSD Filter) If you turn this setting on, the sound when playing a 1-bit project/file will pass thr ough the signal processing filter . By default, this is "ON". ON: Playback will pass through the DSD filter (-3.
40 Formatting the hard disk (HDD Format) Here's how to format the MR-1000's har d disk. Y ou should only perform this operation if you want to erase all of the data saved on the har d disk, or if the message "Drive Error ." appears frequently .
41 Updating the system (Load System) Y ou can download the latest version of the MR-1000 operating system file fr om the Korg website (www .korg.com). For details on the pr ocedure, refer to the Kor g website. Preparing for the update Use a USB cable to connect the MR-1000 to your computer (see "Using the MR-1000 with your computer ," p.
42 Using the MR-1000 with y our computer Y ou can use the MR-1000 as a USB 2.0 mass storage class device. This lets you copy files from the MR-1000 to your computer , or copy files (W A V , DSDIFF , etc.) from your computer into the MR-1000. There ar e limitations on the audio files that the MR-1000 can recognize ( → p.
43 4. Save data on your computer . When you open the "Local disk (*:)" (or "Unspecified name") that appeared on your computer in step 3, the contents of the MR-1000's hard disk will be displayed. Copy the desired data onto your computer .
44 Har d disk structure and files Supported audio files Stereo files ar e used for all recording formats that can be selected on the MR-1000 ( → p.36) Supported folders and file names F A T32 file system format. Long file names are supported, double-byte characters (e.
45 MRPM.sys This file contains settings used by the system. There must be one and only one such file. Do not move or delete it. Never delete or rename this file. MRPlayList.txt This file contains a play list. Do not rename this file. W A V_0001 folder (pr oject folder) This folder is created for each pr oject you record.
46 Using the A udioGate software The audio files of a project r ecorded on the MR-1000 can be copied to your computer . Then you can use the "AudioGate" audio format conversion application on the included CD to convert the audio file format; as well as edit, divide, or join audio files.
47 Windows XP user s In order to install or uninstall software in W indows XP , you must have Administrator privi- leges. For details, consult your system administrator . 1. Inser t the included CD-R OM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer . Normally , the "AudioGate Application Installer" will start up automatically .

50 Disk too busy . • Repeated actions of recor ding, writing, and deleting will gradually decrease the amount of contiguous free space on the har d disk, causing files to be saved in a fragmented state during recor ding. This message will appear when access to the drive has slowed down due to such problems.
51 Project Name Err or . Delete illegal f older . • An identically named project/file alr eady exists. → Rename the project/file. Alternatively , use USB mode to delete the project/file and the directory of the same name.
