Inst allation and Operation Manual APC Brick Panel Product s PMF3XS-B PMJ3XS-B PMP3XS-B PMH3XS-B PMG3XS-B PML3XS-B.
The Brick Panel Product Surge Protective Devices (SPD) are designed to deliver specification grade performance at the service entrance, branch panels or other critical locations.
Installation and Operation Ma nual 3 Precautions ........ .............. .............. .............. .............. .............. .............. ... 4 Introduction .. .............. .............. .............. .............. .............. ......
4 Installation and Operation Manu al Precautions At end-of-life conditions, Surge Protective Devices ( SPDs) can lose their ability to block power system voltage and attemp t to draw excessive current from the line.

6 Installation and Operation Manu al Introduction Thank you for choosing the APC SurgeArrest ® PM_3X Series “Brick” Su rge Protective Device. The APC non-modular Surge Protecti ve Device (SPD) is.
Installation and Operation Ma nual 7 D ANGER HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION, OR ARC FLASH • Apply appropriate p ersonal protective equipment (PPE) and foll ow safe electrical wo rk pr act ices. See NFPA 70E. • This equipment must onl y be inst alled and serviced by qualified electrical personnel.
8 Installation and Operation Manu al Unpacking and Preliminary Inspection Inspect the entire shi pping containe r for damage or sig ns of mishandling before unpacking the device. Remove the packing mate rial and further inspect the device for any obvious shipping damage .
Installation and Operation Ma nual 9 Electrical Voltage Rating Prior to mounting the SPD, verify that th e devi ce has the same voltage rating as the power distribution system in which it is installe d. Compare th e nameplate voltage or model number on the SPD with the namep late of the electrical distribution equipment.
10 Installation and Operation Manu al Terminals, Wire Size, and Installation Torque Terminals are provided for phase (line), neutral, an d equipment ground connections. The SPD termin als accept a range of 12 AWG (3 mm 2 ) to 2 AWG (34 mm 2 ) copper wire for phase, neutral, and ground conn ectors.
Installation and Operation Ma nual 11 Location of SPD Install Type 2 SPDs on the load side of th e main Overcurrent Protection De vice (OCPD) to comply with NEC Article 28 5 for Type 2 SPDs. Locate the SPD as close as possible to the circuit being ad dressed to minimize the wire length and optimize SPD perfo rmanc e.
12 Installation and Operation Manu al Grounding The SPD has leakage current to ground when energized and can present a hazardous touch voltage. The device has SPD elements conne cted from phase to ground.
Installation and Operation Ma nual 13 Installation Conduit Location and Recommendations The recommended conduit entry is at the bottom of the device enclosure.
14 Installation and Operation Manu al Wiring Follow the step s listed below when making wi ring connections. 1. Turn off all power supplying this equip ment before working on or i nside any enclosure containing this equipment.

16 Installation and Operation Manu al Operation LED Status Indicators The diagnostic display panel shows the sta tus of the SPD module with diagnostically controlled gree n/red LEDs. If a unit is operating correctly, a ll the phase LEDs will be illumin ated green.
Installation and Operation Ma nual 17 When power is applied to the SPD and one or more of the diagnostic display panel LEDs are red, and one or more modul e LEDs are out, the module sho uld be replaced. Refer to “Maintenance and Tr oubleshooting” on page 19 for prop er troubleshooting procedu res.
18 Installation and Operation Manu al Dry Contacts The SurgeArrest ® series SPDs come standard with dry contacts. The connection for the dry contacts is located on the back of the diagnostic display panel (lower right corner). The dry cont acts are 3-posi tion, Form “C” type with Normally Open, Normally C losed and Common conn ections.
Installation and Operation Ma nual 19 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Preventive Maintenance Inspect the SPD periodically to main tain reliable system performance and continued transient voltage surge suppression. Periodicall y check the state of the diagnostic displ ay panel LED status ind icators.
20 Installation and Operation Manu al Troubleshooting If a module shows two gree n indicator lights and the di splay panel shows a red phase indicator light, follow the Troubl eshooting Flow Chart in Figure 9 below. Replac ement Pa rts The following replacement part s are available.
