Locations This section pr ovides information to help you locate the connectors on the fr ont and r ear of your computer , parts on the syst em board, and components and internal drives in your computer .
Locating connect ors, controls, and indicators on the fr ont of your computer Figure 1 “F r ont connector , contr ol, and indicator locations” on page 8 shows the locations of the connectors, controls, and indicat ors on the front of your comput er .

Connector Description Ethernet connect or Used to attach an E thernet cable for a local area network (LAN). Note: T o oper ate the computer within FCC Class B limits, use a Category 5 E thernet cable. USB connector Used t o attach a device that requir es a USB connector , such as a USB keyboar d, a USB mouse, a USB scanner , or a USB printer .
Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your computer . When you contact L enovo for help, the machine type and model information helps support t echnicians t o identify your comput er and provide faster service. Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapt er provides information on using some of the computer components. F requently asked questions The following are a few tips that will help you optimize the use of your computer .
Note: Y ou can use the mouse or the Up and Down arr ow keys to highlight menu selections. Y ou can close the Start menu or the conte xt menu by clicking the mouse or pressing Esc.
About your computer audio If a factory-installed, high-performance audio adapter is installed in your computer , the system-boar d audio connect ors on the rear of the comput er are typically disabled; use the connect ors provided on the audio adapter .

Chapter 3. Y ou and your comput er This chapter pr ovides information about accessibility, comfort, and relocating your comput er t o other countries or regions. Accessibility and comfort Good ergonomic pr actice is important to get the most fr om your personal computer and to avoid discomfort.
Adjust the monit or so the top of the scr een is at, or slightly below , eye level. Place the monit or at a comfortable viewing distance, usually 51 to 61 cm (20 to 24 inches), and position it so you can view it without having to twist your body .
Register your computer with L enovo T o r egister your computer , go to http://www.lenovo.com/r egister. Then, follow the instructions on the screen to complet e the registr ation. This can help authorities return your computer to you if it is lost or stolen.

Chapter 4. Security This chapter provides information about how to pr otect your computer from theft and unauthoriz ed use. Security featur es The following security featur es are available on your co.
Attaching an integr ated cable lock An int egrat ed cable lock, sometimes r eferred to as the Kensington lock, can be used t o secur e your computer to a desk, table, or other non-permanent xture. The cable lock attaches to the integr ated cable lock slot at the rear of your computer and is oper ated with a key .
• Administrat or P assword: Setting an Administr ator Passwor d deters unauthorized users fr om changing conguration settings. If you are r esponsible for maintaining the congur ation settings of several computers, you might want to set an Administr ator P asswor d.

Chapter 5. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapt er pr ovides instructions on how t o install or replace hardwar e for your computer . Installing or replacing hardware This section pr ovides instructions on how to install or replace har dware for your comput er .
2. Connect a new keyboar d or mouse t o one of the USB connect ors on the computer . Depending on wher e you want to connect the new keyboar d or mouse, see “L ocating connect ors, controls, and indicators on the front of your comput er ” on page 8 or “L ocating connectors on the r ear of your comput er ” on page 9.
3. Remove the USB dongle fr om the compartment of the new wir eless mouse or fr om the compartment of the wir eless keyboar d. 4. Then, connect the USB dongle to an available USB connect or on your computer . 5. Correctly install the batteries for the mouse, following the instructions in the table below .

3. Click Back up your har d drive and select backup operation options. Then, follow the instructions on the screen t o complet e the backup oper ation. P erforming a r ecover y operation This section pr ovides instructions on how t o perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am.
Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving r ecovery pr oblems” on page 38. 4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les fr om your hard disk drive, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een.
2. Repeatedly press and r elease the F12 key when turning on the computer . When the Please select boot device window opens, release the F12 key . 3. In the Please select boot device window, select the USB hard disk drive as the rst boot device and press Enter .
Note: If you need updat ed device drivers, see “Getting the latest device drivers for your computer” on page 47 for more information. Reinstalling software progr ams If a software progr am you installed on your computer is not working corr ectly, you might need t o r emove and reinstall it.
It is important to create a rescue medium and a set of recovery media as early as possible and stor e them in a safe place for future use. Chapter 6 . Recovery information 39.

Chapter 7. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram The Setup Utility pr ogram is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which operating system you ar e using. However , the oper ating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword consider ations A password can be any combination of up t o 64 alphabetic and numeric charact ers. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended t o use a strong password that cannot be easily compromised.

Exiting fr om the Setup Utility pr ogram After you nish viewing or changing settings, press Esc t o return to the Setup Utility progr am main menu. Y ou might have t o press Esc several times. Do one of the following: • If you want to save the new settings, press F10 to save and e xit the Setup Utility pr ogram.
Chapter 8. Updating syst em progr ams This chapt er provides information about updating the POS T and BIOS, and how to recover from a POS T and BIOS update failure. Using system progr ams System progr ams are the basic layer of softwar e built int o your computer .

Chapter 9. P reventing pr oblems This chapter pr ovides information that can help you avoid common pr oblems and keep your comput er running smoothly . K eeping your computer current In some situations you may nd it necessary t o have the most current softwar e pr ograms, device drivers, or operating system.

Cleaning your computer It is a good pr actice to clean your computer periodically to protect the surfaces and ensur e tr ouble-free operation. CA UTION: Be sure to turn off the computer and monitor power switches befor e cleaning the computer and monitor screen.
Many comput er supply st ores carry the special cleaning uids for displays. Use cleaning uids developed for L CD displays only . First apply the uid t o a lint-fr ee, soft cloth, then clean the L CD display . Some computer supply stor es carry pr e-moistened towelett es for L CD maint enance.
Chapter 10. T r oubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer pr oblem is not described here, see Chapter 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 69 for additional troubleshooting resour ces.
Symptom Action The oper ating system does not start. V erify that: • The startup sequence includes the device wher e the operating system r esides. Usually, the oper ating system is on the har d disk drive. F or more information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 43 .
2. Run the diagnostic pr ograms to ensure your comput er is oper ating corr ectly . 3. Reinstall the new har dware option or software following the manufacturer's instructions.
• Make sure that the pr ogram you ar e running is designed for use in the Micr osoft Windows oper ating system. If the progr am is designed t o run in DOS, the pr ogram does not use the Windows sound featur e and must be congur ed to use SoundBlast er P ro or SoundBlaster emulation.
An audio disc or AutoPlay-enabled disc does not automatically play when it is inserted into a CD drive Symptom: An audio disc or AutoPlay-enabled disc does not automatically play when it is inserted into a CD drive.
Actions: • Restart the DVD player pr ogram. • Close any open les, turn off the computer , and then r estart the comput er . • T ry a lower scr een r esolution or color depth. If these actions do not corr ect the pr oblem, run the diagnostic progr ams (see “Diagnostic progr ams” on page 67 for instructions).
• Ensure that a DVD disc is in the drive with the shiny side of the disc facing down. • Ensure that video resolution is set to less than 1152 x 864. • On comput ers that have a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive in addition to a DVD-ROM drive, make sure that the DVD disc is in the drive labeled “DVD”.
If these actions do not correct the problem, have the computer and keyboar d serviced. See Chapt er 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 69 for details. The mouse or pointing device does not work Symptom: The mouse or pointing device does not work.
Monitor problems Note: Many monitors have status-indicator lights and built-in controls for adjusting brightness, contr ast, width, height, and other pictur e adjustments.
Actions: • The monit or might be oper ating in a low-refr esh rat e display mode. Set the monitor t o the highest, noninterlaced refr esh rat e supported by your monitor and the video contr oller in your computer . Attention: Using a r esolution or r efresh r ate that is not supported by your monit or might damage it.

If your computer is a Gigabit E thernet model and you use a speed of 1000 Mbps, the connection fails or errors occur Symptom: If your computer is a Gigabit Ethernet model and you use a speed of 1000 Mbps, the connection fails or errors occur . Actions: • Use Cat egory 5 wiring and make sure that the network cable is securely connected.
Sound does not come from the Bluetooth headphone Symptom: Sound does not come fr om the Bluet ooth headset/headphone but comes fr om the local speaker even though the headset/headphone is connected using Headset prole or A V prole. Action: Do the following: 1.
Actions: • V erify that all option hardwar e and cable connections are secure. • If the option comes with its own test instructions, use those instructions to test the option. • If the failing option is a SCSI option, verify that: – The cables for all ext ernal SCSI options ar e connected correctly .
2. Right-click your C drive entry and then click P roperties . 3. Click Disk Cleanup . 4. Click Clean up system les . 5. Click the More Options tab. 6. In the Progr ams and F eatures area, click the Clean up button. 7. A list of installed applications is displayed.
Symptom: Serial port cannot be accessed. Actions: • Make sure the serial cable is securely connected t o the serial port on the computer and to the serial device. If the serial device has its own power cord, make sur e it is attached to a properly grounded electrical outlet.
• If you r eceived any err or messages while using the softwar e progr am, see the printed documentation supplied with the software or the help system for that software for a description of the messages and solutions t o the pr oblem. • Check with your softwar e manufacturer to see if any updates ar e available.
