Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

Although ther e ar e no moving parts in your computer after the power cor d has been disconnect ed, the following warnings are r equired for your safety .
Extension cords and relat ed devices Ensure that e xtension cor ds, surge prot ectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are rat ed to handle the electrical requir ements of the pr oduct. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input r ating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any e xternal device cables other than USB and 1394 cables while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your computer . T o avoid possible damage to attached devices, wait at least ve seconds after the computer is shut down to disconnect external devices.
Rechargeable battery notice DANGER Do not attempt t o disassemble or modify the battery pack. A ttempting to do so can cause an explosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied battery pack is not covered by the warr anty .
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can gener ate heat when turned on and when batteries are charging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , t elephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.

Active Prot ection System The Active P rotection System pr ogram prot ects your hard disk drive when the shock sensor inside your computer detects a condition that could damage the drive, such as system tilt, e xcessive vibr ation, or shock. The har d disk drive is less vulner able to damage when it is not oper ating.
Mobile Broadband Connect The Mobile Br oadband Connect pr ogram enables your computer t o connect to the mobile broadband (3G) network thr ough a supported wireless WAN card.
Chapter 2. Using your comput er This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer” on page 19 .
• T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, cr eate and apply power plans by use of the P ower Manager progr am. • If your comput er will be turned off for an e xtended period of time, you can prevent battery power from dr aining by r emoving the battery .
Special k eys and buttons Y our computer has sever al special keys and buttons to help you work mor e easily and effectively . F or the Windows 7 oper ating system, the On Screen Display pr ogram is preinstalled on your computer to enable you to t oggle between the default and standar d settings of the ThinkP ad F1-F12 key functionality .
Speaker volume up (F3) If you mut e the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again. T o turn on the sound, pr ess the Speak er volume up or Speak er volume down key . Microphone mute (F4) Pr ess the micr ophone mut e key t o mut e or unmute all of the r ecording devices.

Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the k eyboard and thr ee click buttons at the bottom of the keyboar d.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The touch pad is a pad 1 below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bott om of the keyboar d.
Disabling the Ultr aNav pointing device and using an external mouse If you attach an ext ernal mouse t o a USB connect or , you can use the e xternal mouse simultaneously with the T r ackP oint pointing device and the touch pad.
Using the ac power adapter The power to run your comput er can come either fr om the lithium-ion (Li-ion) batt er y pack pr ovided with it, or fr om ac power through the ac power adapt er .
• Recharge the batt ery completely befor e using it. The batt ery is fully char ged if the battery indicator shows green when the ac power adapter is plugged in. • Always use power management featur es such as power modes, screen blank, sleep, and hibernation.
2. Click Administrative T ools . 3. Double-click T ask Scheduler . If you are prompt ed for an administr ator passwor d or conrmation, type the passwor d or provide conrmation. 4. F rom the left pane, select the task folder for which you want to enable the wakeup function.

Tips for using the wir eless LAN feature • Place your computer so that there are as few obstacles as possible between the wireless LAN access point and the computer .

Changing display settings Y ou can change the display settings, such as font size. Changing the font size T o change the font siz e, do the following: 1. Right-click on the deskt op, and click P ersonalize . 2. Click Display at the left. 3. Select the desired font size.

Chapter 3. Y ou and your computer This chapter provides information about accessibility, comfort, and tr avelling with your computer . Accessibility and comfort Good er gonomic pr actice is important to get the most fr om your personal computer and to avoid discomfort.

In general, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .

The master password can be set and used only by a system administr ator . Like a mast er key, it enables the administrat or to get access to any har d disk drive in a syst em.
The next time you turn on your comput er , you will have to type the user or master hard disk passwor d in order to start your computer and get access to your oper ating syst em.

Swiping your nger over the reader T o swipe your nger over the reader , do the following: 1. Place the ball of your nger (the centr al part of the ngerprint) on the small cir cle above the reader . Make sure that the entir e top joint of the nger is on the r eader .
If you notice any of the following conditions, gently clean the surface of the r eader with a dry, soft, lint-fr ee cloth: • The surface of the r eader is dirty or stained. • The surface of the r eader is wet. • The r eader oft en fails to enroll or authenticat e your ngerprint.

5. Hold the new car d with the metal contact facing upwar d and going into the slot rst. Then, insert the car d rmly int o the slot until you hear a click. 6. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 63. 7. T urn the computer over again.
T o r eplace the har d disk drive, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables fr om the comput er . Wait three to ve minutes to let the comput er cool. 2. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over .
6. Remove the hard disk drive by lifting the tab. 7. Place the new hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay . 8. Slide the hard disk drive rmly into the connector 1 , and then r einstall the scr ews 2 .

5. Remove the scr ew. 6. Pull out the optical drive. T o install a repair ed optical drive or a new one, do the following: 1. Insert the optical drive int o the optical drive bay, and then press it rmly int o the connector .
2. Reinstall the screw . 3. Reinstall the computer cover 1 . Then tighten the screws 2 . 4. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 63. 5. T urn the computer over again. 4. Loosen the screw that secures the optical drive and remove it. 5. Pull out the optical drive. T o install a repair ed optical drive or a new one, do the following: 1. Insert the optical drive int o the optical drive bay, and then press it rmly int o the connector .
2. Reinstall the scr ew and tighten it. 3. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 63. 4. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing a PCI Express Mini Card for wir eless LAN connection Before you start, print these instructions.
4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , and then r emove the cover 2 . 5. If a tool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini Car d with the corr esponding sock et 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secur e the car d with the scr ew 2 . 8. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini C ard as shown in the dr awing.
Replacing a PCI Express Mini C ard for wireless W AN connection or mSA T A solid state drive Before you start, print these instructions. Depending on models, your computer might have a wireless W AN car d, or an mSA T A solid stat e drive, or neither installed in the PCI Expr ess Mini C ard slot.
5. If a tool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
8. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini C ard as shown in the dr awing. 9. Reinstall the computer cover 1 . Then tighten the scr ew 2 . 10. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 63. 11. T urn the computer over again.

Replacing a memory module T o r eplace a memory module, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables fr om the comput er . Wait three to ve minutes to let the comput er cool. 2. Close the comput er display, and turn it over .
7. With the notched end of the memory module towar d the contact edge side of the socket, insert the memory module 1 into the socket at an angle of about 20 degrees; then press it in rmly 2 . Note: If you install a memory module in only one of the two memory slots, install it in the bottom slot.
DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable to or disconnect it fr om the telephone outlet on the wall. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables before opening the cover of this slot.
5. Remove the screws that secure the keyboar d. 6. T urn the computer over and open the display . 7. Push hard in the dir ection shown by the arrows 1 to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboar d. The keyboard will be detached slightly 2 . Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent fr om the illustr ation above.
8. Remove the cables 2 and 4 by ipping the connect ors 1 and 3 upwards. Remove the keyboar d 5 . Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent fr om the illustr ation above. Installing the keyboard T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1.

Solution : Make sure that: – The cable is installed corr ectly . The network cable must be securely connected both t o the Ethernet connector of your computer and to the RJ45 connector of the hub. The maximum allowable distance from the comput er to hub is 100 met ers.
Make sure that your computer is within range of a wireless access point. Make sur e that the wireless r adio is enabled by double-clicking the Access Connections icon on the taskbar . Note: If you ar e using the Windows 7 operating system, click Show hidden icons on the taskbar .

Audio problems • Problem : W ave or MIDI sound does not play correctly . Solution : Make sur e that the built-in audio device is congured corr ectly .
Solution : Once the headphone is attached, the streaming is aut omatically r edirected to it. If you want to listen to sound fr om the speakers again, be sure to set those speakers as the default device. The procedur e is as follows: 1. Click Start ➙ Control P anel ➙ All Control Panel Items .
• Problem : The battery pack cannot be char ged. Solution : Y ou cannot char ge the battery when it is too hot. If the battery feels hot, r emove it fr om the computer and allow it to cool to room temper ature. After it cools, reinstall it and rechar ge the battery .
2. Swap batt eries with another similar model, if available. If another similar ThinkP ad model is available, then verify that the batt ery pack works in the other computer and that the battery pack for the other model works in this comput er . 3. V erify the battery-status indicator .
Solution : If the system does not r eturn fr om sleep mode, it might have enter ed sleep or hibernation mode aut omatically because the battery is deplet ed. Check the system status indicat or (illuminated ThinkP ad logo). – If the system status indicator (illuminat ed ThinkP ad logo) blinks slowly, your comput er is in sleep mode.
Solution : Apply the disk defragmentation tool in Windows for fast er access t o the data. Optical drive problems • Problem : The optical drive, such as a CD , DVD , or CD-RW drive, does not work. Solution : Make sur e that the comput er is turned on and a CD , DVD , or CD-RW is pr operly loaded on the center pivot of the drive.
Check that your computer has the minimum r equired memory to run the application. Refer to the manuals supplied with the application. Check the following: • The application is designed to oper ate with your oper ating system. • Other applications run corr ectly on your computer .
