Chapter 2. Overview This guide provides information about r eplacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs). This guide does not include procedur es for all parts. It is expected that cables, switches, and certain mechanical parts be replaced by trained service personnel without the need for step-by-step procedur es.
Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed fr om the computer and you are ready to install the new part. Static electricity , although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer components and parts.
Locations This chapter provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, contr ols, and components of the computer . Locating controls and connectors on the front of your computer Figure 1 shows the location of the contr ols and connectors on the front of your computer .
Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the location of connectors on the r ear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer ar e color-coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .
Connector Description USB connectors Used to attach a device that requir es a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection, such as a USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB scanner or USB printer . If you have mor e than eight USB devices, you can purchase a USB hub, which you can use to connect additional USB devices.
Locating components To open the computer cover , see “Opening the cover” on page 12. Figure 3 shows the location of the various components in your computer .

Chapter 3. Installing options and replacing hardware This chapter provides an intr oduction to the features and options that are available for your computer .
Installing internal options Important Read “Handling static-sensitive devices” on page 4 before opening the computer cover . Opening the cover Important T urn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let the computer cool before opening the computer cover .
Accessing system board components and drives To access system board components and the drives: 1. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the cover” on page 12. 2. On some models, you might need to pivot the drive-bay assembly upwar d and pivot the hard disk drive upwar d to access the internal components, see Figure 6.
Installing adapter cards This section provides information and instr uctions for installing and removing PCI adapters. Y our computer has one PCI adapter connector and one PCI Express x16 adapter connector . To install a PCI adapter: 1. Open the computer cover .
4. Install the adapter car d into the appropriate connector in the adapter card connector on the system board. Note: The white connector is for the PCI adapter and the black connector is for the PCI Express x16 adapter . 5. Rotate the adapter r etainer to the closed position.
Drive specifications Y our computer comes with the following factory-installed drives: v An optical drive in bay 1 (some models) v A 3.5-inch diskette drive in bay 2 (some models) v A 5.25-inch har d disk drive Any bay that does not have a drive installed has a static shield and bay panel installed.
Installing a drive in bay 2 To install an optical drive in bay 2: 1. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the cover” on page 12. 2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upwar d to gain access to the cable connections and remove the drive cables fr om the drive.

3. Locate one of the extra five-wir e power connectors and connect it to the drive. See Figure 11 . What to do next: v To work with another option, go to the appropriate section. v To complete the installation, go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 39.
4. Remove the metal shield fr om the diskette drive bay by using a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry it loose. 5. Remove the plastic panel in the bezel by squeezing the plastic tabs that secur e the panel on the inside of the bezel. 6. Slide the diskette drive lock to the unlock position.
5. Reinstall the PCI-riser assembly if r emoved. 6. Lower the drive-bay assembly and r econnect any cables that were disconnected. 7. Close the computer cover and connect the power cor d. See Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 39.
Replacing the battery Y our computer has a special type of memory that maintains the date, time, and settings for built-in features, such as parallel-port assignments (configuration). A battery keeps this information active when you turn off the computer .
Replacing the power supply assembly Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer . To obtain a copy of the Safety and Warranty Guide , go to the Support We b site at http://www .
6. Disconnect the power supply cables 1 and 2 fr om the system-board connectors and from all drives. See Figur e 18. 7. Remove the power -supply cables from the cable clips and ties. 8. Slide the power -supply assembly away from the chassis and remove it fr om the computer .
11 . Check the position of the voltage-selection switch on the r ear of the computer . Use a ballpoint pen to slide the switch, if necessary . Note: Some computers do not have a voltage switch. These computers automatically control the voltage. v If the voltage supply range is 100–127 V ac, set the switch to 11 5 V.
3. Remove the heat sink fr om the system board by pivoting the lever 1 securing the heat sink until it is fully in the up position. Carefully lift the heat sink of f of the system board. See Figur e 21. 4. Place the new heat sink into position and lower the lever to secur e the heat sink.
