Chapter 1. Finding information This guide and other publications helps you to unpack your ThinkPad ® computer and get started. It includes a few tips for first-time users.
supplements this Guide. Read it before you use the wir eless features of your ThinkPad computer . The ThinkPad computer complies with the radio frequency and safety standar ds of any country or region in which it has been approved for wir eless use.
Chapter 2. T aking care of your ThinkPad computer Though your computer is designed to function reliably in normal work environments, you need to use common sense in handling it. By following these important tips, you will get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer .
Note: Not all such appliances cause a significant electrostatic char ge. Be gentle with your computer v A void placing any objects (including paper) between the display and the keyboard or the palm r est. v Y our computer display is designed to be opened and used at an angle slightly greater than 90 degr ees.
v T urn off your computer if you ar e replacing the HDD or SSD. v When replacing the primary HDD or SSD, r eattach the cover of the drive slot. v Store your external and r emovable hard disk or optical drives in the appropriate containers or packaging when they ar e not being used.
Cleaning the cover of your computer Occasionally clean your computer as follows: 1. Prepar e a mixture of a gentle kitchen-use detergent (one that does not contain abrasive powder or strong chemicals such as acid or alkaline). Use 5 parts water to 1 part detergent.
Tips on using the dual screen model v Do not open the main display beyond 150 degrees to the keyboar d. T o do so might damage the computer hinge. v The second screen is designed to be opened at an angle of 0 to 30 degr ees to the main display . Do not open it to an angle of more than 30 degrees.

Chapter 3. Solving computer problems Frequently asked questions This section lists frequently asked questions and tells wher e you can find detailed answers. For details about each publication included in the package with the ThinkPad computer , see “This guide and other publications” on page 1.
How can I contact the Customer Support Center? See Chapter 6, “Getting help and service,” on page 51 of this Guide. For the phone numbers of the Customer Support Center nearest to you, see “W orldwide telephone list” on page 53.
7. Select Restart ; then press Enter . Move the cursor to the option you want for restarting your computer; then pr ess Enter . Y our computer restarts. Diagnosing problems If you have a problem with your computer , you can test it by using PC-Doctor ® for W indows.
4. Using cursor keys, select Main hard disk drive or Ultrabay hard disk drive . Press Enter to start the diagnostic pr ogram. The diagnostic program runs a read verification test and a speed test of the drive you select, and reports its findings. 5. If the diagnostic program r eturns any error messages, call the Customer Support Center for service.
Error messages Note: 1. In the charts, x can be any character . 2. The version of PC-Doctor referr ed to here is PC-Doctor for W indows. Message Solution 0176: System Security - The System has been tampered with. This message is displayed if you remove the Security Chip and reinstall it, or install a new one.
Message Solution 0200: Hard disk error The HDD or SSD is not working. Make sure that the HDD or SSD is attached firmly . Run the BIOS Setup Utility; then make sure the drive is not disabled in the Startup menu. 021 x: Keyboard err or Make sure that ther e are no objects placed on the keyboard, or if you have one, the external keyboard.
Message Solution 0280: Previous boot incomplete Y our computer was previously unable to complete the boot process. T urn the computer off; then turn it on to start the BIOS Setup Utility . V erify the configuration and then restart the computer either by choosing the Exit Saving Changes option under the Restart item or by pressing F10.
Message Solution The power-on password pr ompt A power-on passwor d or a supervisor password is set. T ype the password and pr ess Enter to use the computer . If the power-on passwor d is not accepted, a supervisor password might have been set. T ype the supervisor password and pr ess Enter .
Message Solution Cannot boot from any device. Check the status of the device which you want to boot from. Device not found Check the device you want to boot from. Device error Check the device you want to boot from. No valid operating system Check that the operating system has no failure and is installed correctly .
If one of the following error code messages is displayed on the screen, have the computer serviced: 02F4: EISA CMOS not writable 02F5: DMA test failed 02F6: Software NMI failed 02F7: Fail-safe timer N.
Problem: When I turn on the machine, only a white cursor appears on a blank screen. Solution: Note: If you have modified a partition on your HDD or SSD by using a partition software, information about that partition, or the master boot recor d, may have been destroyed.
Memory problems Problem: Y our memory is not operating properly . Solution: 1. V erify that the memory is installed and seated correctly in your computer . It may be necessary to remove all added memories to test the computer with only the factory-installed memories, and then reinstall the memory one at a time to ensure a pr oper connection.
Keyboard problems Problem: All or some keys on the keyboard do not work. Solution: For W indows V ista ® : 1. Click Start → Control Panel . 2. Click Hardware and Sound , and then click Keyboard . 3. Select the Hardware tab. In the Device Properties, make sur e that the Device Status is This device is working properly .
Sleep (standby) or hibernation problems Problem: The computer enters sleep (standby) mode (the sleep/standby indicator turns on) immediately after Power-on self-test (POST). Solution: 1. Make sure that: v The battery is charged. v The operating temperature is within the acceptable range.
Problem: While operating with the battery , the computer does not return from sleep (standby) mode, or the sleep (standby) indicator stays on and the computer does not work. Solution: The system may have entered sleep (standby) or hibernation mode automatically because the battery is depleted.
Computer screen problems Problem: Incorrect characters appear on the scr een. Solution: 1. Make sure that the operating system and the application pr ogram are installed correctly . 2. If they are installed and configur ed correctly , have the computer serviced.
Problem: The screen is unr eadable or distorted. Solution: Make sure that: v The screen r esolution and color quality are correctly set. v The display device driver is installed correctly . v The monitor type is correct. T o check these settings, do as follows: For W indows V ista : 1.
Solution (continued): For W indows XP: 1. Right-click on the desktop, click Properties to open the Display Properties window , then click the Settings tab. 2. Check whether the screen r esolution and color quality are correctly set. 3. Click Advanced .
Battery problems Problem: The battery does not charge. -or- The operating time for a fully charged battery is short. -or- The battery cannot be fully charged by the power -off method in the standard charge time for the computer .
Hard disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) problems Problem: After setting a hard disk passwor d on the HDD or SSD of the computer , you moved the drive to another computer . Now you cannot unlock the hard disk password. Solution: Y our computer supports an enhanced password algorithm.
Problem: Y ou cannot change or remove a har d disk password in the BIOS Setup Utility . Solution: A hard disk passwor d can be changed or removed only if the setting of Using Passphrase in the BIOS Setup Utility - enabled or disabled - is the same as it was when you set the password.
Fingerprint reader problems Problem: Y ou cannot register or authenticate your finger . Solution: If your finger has any of the following conditions, you may not be able to register or authenticate it. v Y our finger is wrinkled, rough, dry , injured, stained, oily , or wet.
Problem: When you start up your computer , the operating system does not start up from the device that should start it up. Solution: The device that starts up the operating system may not be included in the ″ Boot priority order ″ list in the BIOS Setup Utility .
RAID problems Problem: The RAID 0 volume is reported as ″ Failed. ″ Solution: One hard disk in the RAID 0 array may be missing or may have been damaged. If you have removed the disk, r einstall it, and then turn on the computer . Check the status of the RAID volume in Intel ® Matrix Storage Manager option ROM or Intel Matrix Storage Console.
Solution (continued): For using Intel Matrix Storage Manager option ROM : 1. Replace the hard disk drive, and then turn on the computer . 2. During the startup, the state of the RAID volume is shown as ″ Degraded, ″ and a prompt to r ebuild the volume is displayed on the screen.

Chapter 4. Recovery options Introducing Rescue and Recovery If W indows is not running properly , use the Rescue and Recovery workspace to help solve or identify your problem. 1. T urn off the computer , and then turn it on again. 2. When the ThinkPad logo comes up, immediately press the ThinkV antage button.
Restoring the factory contents The complete backup of all the files and programs that Lenovo pr einstalled on your computer may have shipped on recovery discs with your computer or resides in a hidden pr otected area, or partition, of the HDD. Although hidden, the backups in the partition consume the drive space.
Restoring the factory contents using the recovery discs If a set of recovery discs is enclosed with your computer , or you have created or purchased r ecovery discs, you can restore the factory contents by using the discs in the following procedur e: 1.

Chapter 5. Upgrading and replacing devices Replacing the battery Important: Read Safety and Warranty Guide befor e replacing the battery . T o replace the battery 1. T urn off the computer , or enter hibernation mode. Then disconnect the AC adapter and all cables from the computer .
Upgrading the hard disk drive or solid state drive Important: Read Safety and Warranty Guide befor e replacing the HDD or SSD. Y ou can replace the solid state drive (SSD) or the hard disk drive (HDD) with a new one by following the procedur e below .
T o replace the HDD 1. T urn off the computer ; then disconnect the AC adapter and all cables from the computer . 2. Close the computer display , and turn the computer over . 3. Remove the battery . 4. Remove the screw that secur es the drive slot cover .
6. Remove the drive by pulling out the tab. 7. Detach the rubber rails from the drive. 8. Attach the rubber rails to the new drive. 42 ThinkPad ® W700 and W700ds Service and T roubleshooting Guide.
9. Insert the drive into the drive bay; then press it firmly into place. 10. Attach the slot cover . 11 . Reinstall the screw . 12. Reinstall the battery . 13. T urn the computer over again. Connect the AC adapter and the cables to the computer . Chapter 5.
T o replace the SSD 1. T urn off the computer ; then disconnect the AC adapter and all cables from the computer . 2. Close the computer display , and turn the computer over . 3. Remove the battery . 4. Remove the screw that secur es the drive slot cover .
6. Remove the drive by pulling out the tab. 7. Release the latch with your finger in the direction shown by the arr ow 1 , and lift up the bar 2 . Note: Do not remove the rubber pads attached to the side of the adapter . T o do so requires pulling hard, possibly damaging or br eaking them.
8. Pull the tab to remove the SSD fr om its adapter . 9. Insert a new SSD into the adapter; then put the bar back in place and set the latch. 10. Insert the drive into the drive bay; then press it firmly into place. 11 . Attach the slot cover . 12. Reinstall the screw .
14. T urn the computer over again. Connect the AC adapter and the cables to the computer . Replacing memory Important: Read Safety and Warranty Guide befor e replacing memory . Increasing memory capacity is an ef fective way to make programs run faster .
5. Loosen the screws 1 on the memory slot cover; then r emove the cover 2 . 2 1 6. If the SO-DIMM is already in the memory slot, r emove it to make room for the new one by pressing out on the latches 1 on both edges of the socket at the same time, and pulling out the SO-DIMM 2 .
7. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the SO-DIMM you are installing. Attention: T o avoid damaging the SO-DIMM, do not touch its contact edge.
8. Reinstall the cover of the memory slot by aligning the side of the cover first 1 , and closing the cover . Then tighten the screws to secur e the cover 2 . Attention: When you have added or upgraded an SO-DIMM, do not use your computer until you have closed the memory slot cover .
