1 Chapter 1 Introduction This Chapter provides an overview of the WBR-3407's features and capabilities. Congratulations on the purchas e of your new WBR-3407. The WBR-3407 is a multi-function device providing the followi ng services: • ADSL Modem .

2 Chapter 2 Installation This Chapter covers the physical i nstallation of the WBR-3407. Requirements • Network cables. Use standard 10/100BaseT network (UTP) cabl es with RJ45 connectors. • TCP/IP protocol m ust be installed on all PCs. • For Internet Access, an Internet Access account wi th an ISP, and a DSL connection.
Installation 2. Connect LAN Cables Use standard LAN cables to connect PCs to t he Switching Hub ports on the WBR-3407. Both 10BaseT and 100BaseT connections can be used sim ultaneously . If required, connect any port to a norm al por t on another Hub, using a st andard LAN cable.
Chapter 3 Setup This Chapter provides Setup detai ls of the WBR-3407. Overview This chapter describes the setup procedure for: • Internet Access • LAN configuration • Wireless setup • Assigning a Password to protect the confi guration data. PCs on your local LAN m ay also require configurati on.
Setup Configuration Program The WBR-3407 contains an HTTP server. This enables you t o connect to it, and configure it, using your Web Browser. Your Browser must support JavaScript . The configuration program has been tested on the following browsers: • Netscape V4.
WBR-3407 User Guide If you can't connect If the WBR-3407 does not respond, check the following: • The WBR-3407 is properly instal led, LAN connection is OK, and i t is powered ON. You can test the connection by using the "Ping" comm and: • Open the MS-DOS window or com mand prom pt window.

WBR-3407 User Guide Home Screen After finishing the Setup W izard, you will see the Home screen. When you connect in future, you will see this screen when you connect . Use t he default value unless the address is already in use or your LAN is using a different IP address range.
Setup DHCP What DHCP Does A DHCP (Dynami c Host Configuration Prot ocol) Server allocates a valid IP address to a DHCP Client (PC or device) upon request. • The client request is m ade when the client device starts up (boots). • The DHCP Server provides the Gateway and DNS addresses to the client, as well as allocating an IP Address.
WBR-3407 User Guide Wireless Screen The WBR-3407's settings must match the other Wireless stations. Note that the WBR-3407 will automatically accept both 802.
Setup Options Mode Select the desired mode: • g & b - Both 802.11.g and 802.11b Wireless stations will be able to use the WBR-3407. • g only - Only 802.11g Wireless stati ons can use the WBR-3407. • b only - Only 802.11b connections are availabl e.
WBR-3407 User Guide Wireless Security The Wireless Security sub-screen is accesse d by the "Configure" button on the Wireless screen. It provides 4 options for Wireless Securit y: • Disabled - No security is used. • WEP - Data is encrypted using t he WEP standard.
Setup You must enter a Key Value for the Default Key . Key Value Enter the key value or values you wish t o use. The Default Key is required, the other keys are optional . Other stations m ust have the same key. Passphrase If desired, you can generate a key from a phrase, instead of entering the key value directly.
WBR-3407 User Guide Wireless Security - WPA-802.1x If WPA-802.1x is selected, the scr een will look like the following. Note that to use 802.1x: • You need a Radius Server. • The Radius Server must have "Client" logi n for the WBR-3407, using its IP address and the the "Shared Key" set on th is screen .
Setup Password Screen The password screen allows you to assign a password to the WBR-3407. Figure 12: Password Screen Old Password Enter the existing password in this field. New password Enter the new password here. Verify password Re-enter the new password here.
4 Chapter 4 PC Configuration This Chapter detail s the PC Configurat ion required on the local ( "Internal") LAN. Overview For each PC, the following may need to be configured: • TCP/IP ne.
PC Configuration Checking TCP/IP Settings - Windows 9x/ME: 1. Select Control Panel - Net work . You should see a screen like t he following: Figure 14: Network Configuration 2. Select the TCP/IP protocol for your net work card. 3. Click on the Properti es button.

Select the appropriate radio button - Obtain an IP address fr om a DHCP Server or Specify an IP Address , as explained below. Obtain an IP address from a DHCP Server This is the default Windows setting.

PC Configuration Internet Access To configure your PCs to use the WBR-3407 for Internet access: • Ensure that the DSL modem , Cable m odem, or other perm anent connection is functional. • Use the following procedure to configure y our Browser to access the Internet via the LAN, rather than by a Dial-up connection.
WBR-3407 User Guide Macintosh Clients From your Macintosh, you can access the Inte rnet via the WBR-3407. The procedure is as follows. 1. Open the TCP/IP Control Panel. 2. Select Ethernet from the Connect via pop-up m enu. 3. Select Using DHCP Server from the Confi gure pop-up menu.
PC Configuration Wireless Station Configuration This section applies to all Wireless stations wishing to use the WBR-3407's Access Point, regardless of the operating system which is used on t he client.
WBR-3407 User Guide Using WPA-802.1x - Overview 802.1x mode provides greater securit y and centralized m anageme nt, but it is m ore comple x to configure. Wireless Station Configuration For each of the following items, each Wireless St ation m ust have the same settings as the WBR3407.
PC Configuration 802.1x Server Setup (Windows 2000 Server) This section describes using Microsoft Internet Auth en tication Server as the Radius Server, since it is the m ost comm on Radius Server availabl e that supports the EAP-TLS authenticati on method.

PC Configuration 802.1x Client Setup on Windows XP Windows XP ships with a compl ete 802.1x client implem entati on. If using Windows 2000, you can install SP3 (Service Pack 3 ) to gain the same functionality. If you don't have either of t hese systems, y ou must use the 802.

Open the properties for the wirele ss connection, by selecting Start - Control Panel - Network Connections. 2. Right Cli ck on the Wireless Network Connection , and select Properties .
PC Configuration • Your network administrator can advise you of the correct settings for each network. 802.1x networks typically use EAP-TLS. This is a dynam ic key system , so there is no need to enter key values. Enabling Encryption To enable encryption fo r a wireless network, follow this procedur e: 1.

5 Chapter 5 Operation and Status This Chapter details t he operation of the WBR-3407 and the stat us screens. Operation Once both the WBR-3407 and the PCs are configured, operation is automatic. However, there are some situations where add iti onal Internet configurat ion may be required.
WBR-3407 User Guide Data - Status Screen Internet Modem Status This indicates the status of the ADSL modem component. DownStream Connection Speed If connected, displays the speed for the DownStream (downl oad) ADSL Connection. UpStream Connection Speed If connected, displays the speed for the UpStream (upl oad) ADSL Connection.
Operation and Status System Device Name The current name of the WBR-3407. This i s also the "hostname" provided to ISPs who request this i nformation.
WBR-3407 User Guide Buttons Connect If not connected, establish a connect ion to your ISP. Disconnect If connected to your ISP, hang up the connection.
Operation and Status Server. Close Close this window. Connection Details - Fixed IP Address If your access method is "Direct" (no login), w ith a fixed IP address, a screen like the following example will be displayed when th e "Connection Details" button is clicked.
6 Chapter 6 Advanced Features This Chapter explains when and how to use the WBR-3407's "Advanced" Features. Overview The following advanced features are provided: • Internet: • DMZ .
Advanced Features URL Filter If you want to limit access to certain sites on the Internet, you can use this feature. The URL filter will check each Web site access. If the address, or part of the address, is included in the block site list, access will be denied.
WBR-3407 User Guide Trusted PC Allow Trusted PC Enable this to allow one computer to have unrestricted access to the Internet. For this PC, the URL filter will be ignored. If enabled, you must select the PC to be th e tru sted PC. Trusted PC Select the PC to be the Trusted PC.
Advanced Features Dynamic DNS Screen Select Advanced on the main m enu, then Dynamic DNS , to see a screen like the following: Figure 57: DDNS Screen Data - Dynamic DNS Screen DDNS Service Use a Dynamic DNS Service Use this to enable or disable the DDNS feature as required.
WBR-3407 User Guide Firewall Rules The Firewall Rules screen allows you to define "Firewall Rules" which can allow or preven t certain traffic. By default: • All Outgoing traffic is permitted. • All Incoming traffic is denied. "Traffic" means incomi ng connec tion attempts, not packets.
Advanced Features WAN Users The WAN IP address or addresses covered by this rule. Log Indicates whether or not connections covered by this rule shoul d be logged. Buttons Use the Add button to create a new rule. The other buttons - Edit , Move , or Delete - require that a rule be selected first.

Advanced Features Log Thi s determines whet her packets covered by this rule are logged. Sel ect the desired action. • Always - always log traffic considered by this rule, whether it matches or not . (This is useful when debugging y our rules.) • Never - never log traffic considered by this ru le, whether it matches or not.
WBR-3407 User Guide • To define the Schedule used in th ese selections, use the "Schedule" screen. LAN Users Select the desired option to determ ine which PCs are covered by this rule: • Any - All PCs are covered by this rule. • Single PC - Only the selected PC is covered by this ru le.
Advanced Features Firewall Services This screen is used to modify the list of Services which are available when creating Firewall Rules. If adding a new service, this will be blank, and y ou should enter a suitable nam e.
Advanced Features Options This screen allows advanced users to enter or change a number of set tings. For normal operation, there is no need to use this screen or change any settings.

Advanced Features Virtual Servers This feature, sometimes called Port Forwarding , allows y ou to make Servers on your LAN accessible to Internet users. Normally, Internet users would not be able to access a server on your LAN because: • Your Server does not have a valid external IP Address.

7 Chapter 7 Advanced Administration This Chapter explains the settings avail able via the "Administration" section of the menu. Overview Normally, it is not necessary to use these scr eens, or change any settings.
WBR-3407 User Guide PC Database The PC Database is used whenever you need to select a PC (e.g. for the "DMZ" PC). • It eliminates the need to enter IP addresses.
Advanced Administration Data - PC Database Screen Known PCs This lists all current entries. Data displayed is name (IP Address) type . The "type" indicates whether the PC is connected to the LAN. Name If adding a new PC to th e list, en ter its name here.
WBR-3407 User Guide PC Database (Admin) This screen is display ed if the "Advanced Admi nistration" button on t he PC Database is clicked. Advanced Administration MAC Address Select the appropriate opt ion • Automatic discovery - Select this to have the WBR-3407 contact the PC and find its MAC address. This is only possibl e if the PC is connected to the LAN and powered On. • MAC address is - Enter the MAC address on the PC.
WBR-3407 User Guide Config File This feature allows you to downl oad the current settings from the WBR-3407, and save them to a file on your PC. You can restore a previously-downloaded confi guration file t o the WBR-3407, by uploading it to the WBR-3407.
Advanced Administration Logging The Logs record various types of activit y on the WBR-3407. This data i s useful for troubleshooting, but enabling all l ogs will generate a large amount of data and adversely affect performance. Since only a lim ited am ount of log data can be stored i n the WBR-3407, log data can also be E-mailed to your PC.
WBR-3407 User Guide Logs Include (Checkboxes) Use these checkboxes to determine which events are included i n the log. Checkin g all options will increase the size of th e lo g, so it is good practice to disable any events which are not really required.
Advanced Administration E-mail This screen allows you to E-mail Logs and Alerts. A sample screen is show n below. WBR-3407 User Guide Routing Overview • If you don't have other R outers or Gateways on your LAN, y ou can ignore the "Routing" page completely. • If the WBR-3407 is only acting as a Gat eway for the local LAN segm ent, ignore the "Routing" page even if your LAN has other R outers.

WBR-3407 User Guide For incoming connecti ons, you must use the Vi rtual Server or Firewall Rules to specify the PC which w ill receive the incoming traffic. You can also use the DMZ function. This should work wit h almost every application, but: • It is a security risk, since the firewall is disabled.
B Appendix B About Wireless LANs This Appendix provides some background informati on about using Wireless LANs (WLANs). Modes Wireless LANs can work in either of two (2 ) modes: • Ad-hoc • Infrastructure Ad-hoc Mode Ad-hoc mode does not require an Access Po int or a wired (Ethernet) LAN.
WBR-3407 User Guide Channels The Wireless Channel sets the radio frequency used for com muni cation. • Access Points use a fixed Channel. You can se lect the Channel used. This allows you to choose a Channel which provides the least i nterference and best performance.
