About the Control Panel The control panel, locat ed on the fron t of the printer , allo ws you to direct the printe r’s operation. In addition, it di splays the curre nt status of the printer , including any condition that needs your att enti on.
The Message Window The contro l panel message wind ow provides stat us a nd configu ration inf or mat ion. S t atus messages are listed in chapter 4, “T roubleshoot- ing,” of the user’ s gui de. Sta tus m essages display in order of prior ity if the pr int er is on line; they don't display i f the pri nte r is off line.
The Control Panel Indicato rs Lights when the printer is o n line and ready t o acce pt and process ne w pr int j obs. Lights when the printer is rece i vin g data from one or more o f the simultaneo us interf aces . This indicator is us ually accompan ied b y a status m e ssage in the mess age window .
The Control Panel Keys The printer control panel has eight funct ion k eys. The top row of k e ys (Online/ Of fli ne, T ray Se lect, Med ia, Cancel ) is f or frequ entl y used operatio ns. The bot tom row of ke ys is used to n avigate m enus, sele ct options, and ente r values.
The Media ke y i s used to tell the pr inter wh ether paper or transparencies are in th e currently selected cassette. The factory default for both upper and lower cassettes is paper .
About the Configu ration Menu The pr inter’ s con figuration m enu allows y ou change the default prin ter configuration set ting s. An y changes made to the configuration will reside as new default settings and affect all subsequent print jobs.
Accessing th e Con fig uration Me nu T o access the confi g uration m enu, make sure the pr inter is idle ( IDLE displa ys in the me ssage wind ow), then press the On line/ Of fline ke y to take the p r int er of f line (t he O nline /Offline indi ca tor is not lighted), and finally press the Menu key .

Changing Char acter Info rmation Some time s, r ather than selecting an opt ion, y ou need to enter char- acter informa tio n, lik e a n umbe r or a word. Enter ing character inf o r mation through the control pane l is similar to setting the tim e and date on a digit al watch.

Mem ory This submenu allows you t o allocate the prin ter’ s memo r y (RAM and, if a hard disk i s present and disk sw apping is tu r ned on, hard disk space) amo ng the var ious m em or y client s. This flexibility allows e xpe- rienced use rs to optimize the pri nter's perform ance according to a given set of condition s.
This is t he b est place for it for m ost users , b ut it can be r e allocated to other m em o r y cli ent s. The value f o r each memor y client must be e venly divisible by 4 KB : i f a v alue is entered t hat is not e v enly divisible by 4 KB, i t is aut om ati - cally converted to t he nex t lower v a lue tha t is divisib le by 4 KB.
Po stScrip t Hea p Memo ry This is the amount of m emor y ( KB) dedicated t o the P ostScr ipt emulation interpr eter . This memor y holds do wnloaded P o stScript emulati o n f onts , operators, and fo r m s. The size range and def ault varies depending upo n the amou nt o f memory av ai lable on y our s ystem.
Em u lati on M em o ry This is the amount of m em or y ( KB) dedicated t o no n-P o stScr ipt emulations f or temporary storage and f or load ing option al emulations. The size range and def ault varies depe nding upon the amount of memor y av ailable on your system.
Dis p lay L ist Me mory This is the amount of m emor y ( KB) dedicated t o the displa y list s. The displa y list cli e nt holds t he inter m ediate repr esentatio n of pages to be pri nted in compresse d blocks of data. The size range and def ault varie s depen ding u pon the amou nt of memory av ai lable on y our s ystem.
Disk Cach e Mem o ry This is the amount of m emor y (KB) dedicated t o the disk cache, the area in which fre q u entl y used data is stored so it does not have to be continually re ad from a n d written t o disk, i f present (either an inter nal or an e xternal dr ive).
En abl e D isk S wap If the pri nter has a h ard disk, then En ab le Disk Swap s hould be enab led to ta ke full a dvant age of it. Disk s wapping giv e s yo ur p rinter vi r t ual memor y capab ili ty f or all memor y cl ie nts thro ugh the creation of a “swap file” on a hard disk.
Printer En gin e Featu res Clear Wa rning Use this option t o clear a status message that doesn 't automat ically clear after the rel ated corrective ac tion is taken. 3 Instal l the tw o small metal brackets usi ng the f ollowing pro- cedure: a Align one of t he me tal brac kets with the outside of the metal post on the fro nt r ight si de of t he sheet feeder . Make sure t he holes on the post and b rac ket are centered and that t he flange on the bo t tom of the b racke t goes into t he slot on the post.
4 Snap the plasti c brackets on to the ap propriate co rn ers of the sheet feeder . The inside cor ner of each bracke t is labeled to in dicat e which cor- ner of t he sheet f eeder i t fits i n. These brac ke ts also hav e small rims on the botto m that fit inside the edges of the sheet f eeder .
The Envelope Cas sette Y ou ca n purcha se an env elope cass ette from y our QMS v endor . The env elope casset te hol ds up to 3 0 24 -lb (90 g/ m 2) DL and Com 10 env elop es. Th ey s h ould be the top-flap type wit h pre-folded sealing flap s. The leading edge (the edge that f eeds into the pri nter) must be thin a nd well creased.

3 Set the en velop e-si ze k ey to the correct en vel ope siz e . 4 Lif t the stacker arm and load 30 or fewer en velop es printi ng - side up , so that the flap sid e will be on the left when the en vel ope is pull ed into the printer . 5 Lowe r th e sta cker arm .
6 Slide the envelope cassette in to the printer . 7 Ma ke sure you sel ect the co rrect envelo pe si ze th ro u gh your software dri ver wh en prin ting .
Font Cards Y ou ca n purcha se cards c o ntai ning fonts not resident on the pr inte r . The p rint er can suppor t two cards at once. Fonts cards m ay go in either of the two slots located on the front of the printe r , below the control pa nel. Co ntact your Q MS v endor for av a ilabi lity .

Security Cards An optiona l security card allows the Operator Control and Ad ministra- tion menus to be pass word protected , so that only users who k n ow the password can change printer configu ra tions. When a security card is installed, a ne w menu, Inst allatio n, appears in t he print er's Configurati on menu.
2 Inser t the secur ity card into e ith er slot with the card's front label facing left, toward the insi de of the pri nter . 3 Press the Me nu key to enter the Confi gu rati on menu .
Then, specify the pass word. (See “Changing Cha racter Informa - tion” in chapt er 1, “Pr inter Conf igurati on, ” for detailed instr ucti ons f or enterin g alphanumeri c v alues.) 6 When you have e ntered the complete password, press the Selec t key .
14 P ress Selec t to ente r this submenu . Press the Next key to displ ay USE ADMIN PWD YES 15 P ress S elec t. This returns you to the I ns tallatio n menu. 16 On ce the passwor d s are e ntered and activated, press the Menu key to r eturn to the Ma in menu.
Install ation Menu The Instal lation menu appe a rs only i f a security card is installed. The system admin istrato r uses the Instal lation me nu to set pas s words for the Ope rator Cont rol and Admin istrati on menus. Oper ator P asswo rd Allows yo u to enter a pass w ord used to en ter th e Op erator me nu wh en enabled.
Using Passwor ds When a passw ord is r equired to en ter the Ope rator Contro l or Admin- istration me nu, the message window wi ll displa y ENTER PASSWORD if y ou press the Select k ey t o enter the menu. E nt er the pass word or press the Menu ke y to retur n t o the menu.
