1 4 1 W elcome t o iMovie HD W elcome to iMovie HD 6. This document will get you on your wa y to crea ting great mo vies tha t hav e both polish and impact. iMovie HD is the faste st and easiest way t o turn your home video into your own motion picture.

6 Chapter 1 Welcome to iMovie HD Before Y ou Begin T o make it easier to do the tasks in the tutorial, print this document bef ore y ou star t. In many tasks shown here and in iMovie HD Help , you need to choose commands from the menus in the menu bar .

When iMovie HD Help opens, t ype a wor d or phrase in the search field at the top of the page or click one of the topic ar eas to find out information about a certain topic.
2 9 2 iMovie HD T utorial This chapter take s you step b y step thr ough the proce ss of building your own mo vie in iMovie HD . Y ou can use video from a v ariety of sources and device s to create a movie in iMovie HD .
10 Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 4 Click the pop-up menu labeled “ Wher e ” and choose a folder to st ore your movie project. The default location is the Movie s folder in your home f older . Saving your mo vie in this folder will allow other iLif e applications, such as iDVD or G arageBand , to find it easily .
Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 11 If your camcorder uses a dock, connect the dock to the computer and place the camcorder in the dock. The illustration below shows how to c onnect a camcorder to an iMac using a FireWire cable. 3 In iMovie HD, click the mode switch (shown below) to set iMovie HD to camera mode.

14 Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial Y ou can also drag files from your de sktop or from applications like iT unes or iPhoto to the Clips pane. In i Movie HD 6, you can also drag , copy , and past e clips from one iMovie HD project to another .
Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 15 T o delete a clip: m Select the clip, then choose Edit > Cut or press the Delete key . The clip disappears from the Clips pane . Notice that the i Movie T rash at the bottom of the window now has something in it—the clip you just cut.

In this step , you’ll mov e the clips in the Clips pane to the video track in your mo vie and begin to organiz e them into a sequence.

Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 19 Step F iv e: Add Photos to Y our Movie iMovie HD lets you easily add photos from your iPhot o library to your movie. Y ou can add photos as still shots that linger for as long as y ou like, or you can pan and zoom in or out with the “Ken Burns Effect.

Y ou can drag the Photo Settings window anywhere on your c omputer screen to mov e it out of the way . 4 Click the Ken Burns Effect checkbox to deselect it and turn off motion for the photo .

22 Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial Step Six: Add Titles and T ex t No movie is complete without a title , and all the great movies hav e credits at the end . Y ou can add titles, credits, and other text to add to the overall polish of your mo vie. T ext doesn’ t hav e to just sit there , either .
Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 23 3 T ype the text you wan t to appear in the text fields below the list of titles. If the title style can have mor e lines of t ext, you see a plus sign (+) next to the text field. Click it to add another line of text. Y ou can do this as many times as you need to , or until the plus signs stop appearing .
24 Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial Step Seven: Make Adjustments to Clips Now that you ha ve a movie with video , phot os, and a title, you may want to make some adjustments to your video clips . Most of the editing you do in i Movie occurs in the timeline view er .
Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 25 Y ou can take advantage of the “ ghosted playhead” in i Mo vie HD to choose the exact frame where you want trimmed video t o begin or end , then trim to that spot. T o precisely trim a video clip: 1 Click the clip you want to edit in the timeline view er .
26 Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial Any time you mo ve a clip to the right , a gap is created. Y ou can drag other clips to fill the gap , or y ou can leave a gap as a handy backgr ound for text or to add an extra dimension to a transition or effect. The illustration below shows what a gap looks like in the timeline viewer .
Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 27 Step Eight: Add T ransitions Y ou’ ve arranged your video clips in the or der you want them. But the change from one scene to the next is abrupt, and you’ d lik e t o smooth things out. Y ou can do this using transitions .

Chapter 2 iMovie HD Tutorial 31 ∏ Tip: If you need to lengthen a particular audio clip (for example , a sound eff ect), you can duplicate the audio clip and add it to the end of the pr evious clip . Then trim the new clip to keep just the part that you need.

44 Chapter 3 iMovie HD at a Glance Video Effects Y ou can add special effects to change the look of your mo vie clips. For example , you can change color video to black and white , adjust the image brightness and contrast, or add playful effects like fairy dust.

46 Chapter 3 iMovie HD at a Glance Chapters P ane Y ou can add chapter markers to your movie and export it to iDVD or as a video podcast. In iDVD , the chapters will appear in a scene selection menu so that viewers can skip to a par ticular scene . In a video podcast, chapters can include a URL and a URL title.
