Chapter 1 iPod classic Basics 9 Disabling iP od classic Contr ols If you don ’t want t o turn iP od classic on or activate controls acciden tally , you can make them inactive using the Hold switch. T o disable iPod classic c ontrols: m Slide the Hold switch to HOLD (so you can see the orange bar).

For best r esults, the first time you use iP od classic, let it char ge for about four hours or un til the batter y icon in the status area of the displa y shows that the battery is fully charged.

Chapter 2 Music Features 19 T o find songs, audiobooks , videos, and podcasts: Y ou can browse or search the iT unes Store to find a particular album, song, or ar tist.
20 Chapter 2 Music Features  T o subscribe to a podcast, click the Subscribe button next to the podcast graphic. iT unes downloads the most recent episode . As new episodes bec ome available , they are aut omatically downloaded to iT unes when you connect to the Internet.

24 Chapter 2 Music Features Syncing Music A utomatically By default, iP od classic is set to sync all songs and playlists when you c onnect it to your computer . I f your iT unes librar y is larger than the capacity of your iP od classic, iT unes creates a pla ylist that fits.
Chapter 2 Music Features 25 Syncing Genius Playlists and Genius Mixe s to iP od classic Y ou can set iT unes to sync Genius playlists and Genius Mixes to iP od classic.
26 Chapter 2 Music Features T o add a song, video, or other item to iP od classic: 1 In iT unes, click Music or another item in the Librar y list on the left.
Chapter 2 Music Features 27 3 Click “ All podcasts” or “Selected podcasts.” If you click “S elected podcasts,” also select the podcasts in the list that you want t o sync. 4 Click Apply . When you set iT unes to sync iP od classic podcasts automatically , iP od classic is updated each time you connect it to your c omputer .
28 Chapter 2 Music Features When you see the Now Pla ying screen, you can use the Click Wheel to change the volume. Pr ess the Cent er button multiple times from the Now P laying screen to get to other information and options , such as the scrubber bar , rating bullets, shuffle settings, lyrics, podcast information, and more.
Chapter 2 Music Features 29 T o set iPod classic t o always shuffle songs or albums: 1 Choose Settings from the iP od classic main menu. 2 Set Shuffle to either Songs or Albums.
30 Chapter 2 Music Features T o create a Genius playlist with iP od classic: 1 Select a song, and then press and hold the Center butt on until a menu appears. Y ou can selec t a song from a menu or playlist, or you can start from the Now Playing screen.
Chapter 2 Music Features 31 Making On-The-Go Playlists on iP od classic Y ou can mak e playlists on iP od classic, called On-T he-Go Playlists , when iP od classic isn ’t connected to y our computer . T o make an On-The-Go playlist: 1 Select or play a song, and then press and hold the Cen ter button until a menu appears.
32 Chapter 2 Music Features Note: Y ou cannot assign ratings to video podcasts. Viewing L yrics on iP od classic If you enter lyrics f or a song in iT unes (see “ Adding Lyrics ” on page 2 1) and then add the song to iP od classic, y ou can view the lyrics on iP od classic.

Y ou can use the Next/F ast-forward button to move t o the next position and the Previous/Rewind button to mov e to the previous position. Press the C enter button in the final position to confirm the entir e combination.
34 Chapter 2 Music Features T o set iPod classic t o use the iT unes volume settings: m Choose Settings and set Sound Check to On. If you hav en ’t activated Sound Check in iT unes, setting it on iP od classic has no effect.
Chapter 2 Music Features 35 Listening to A udiobooks Y ou can purchase and download audiobooks from the iT unes Store or from audible.c om and listen to them on iP od classic. Y ou can use iT unes to add audiobooks t o iP od classic the same way you add songs.
3 36 3 Video F eatures Y ou can purchase movie s, T V shows , and music videos, rent movie s, and download video podcasts at the iT unes Store , and then add them to your iP od classic. Y ou can watch videos on iP od classic or on a T V connected to iP od classic.
Chapter 3 Video Features 37 T o browse videos in the iT unes Store: 1 In iT unes, selec t iT unes Store under Store in the list on the left. 2 Click an item (Movies , T V Shows , or Music Videos) in the iT unes Store list on the left. Chapter 3 Video Features 39 Important: The first time you connect iP od classic to a diff erent computer and ha ve the automatic sync option set , a message asks if you want t o sync songs and videos automatically .
40 Chapter 3 Video Features Managing Videos Manually Setting iT unes to let y ou manage iP od classic manually gives you the most flexibility for managing videos on iP od classic. Y ou can add and remov e movies , T V shows, and other items individually .
Chapter 3 Video Features 41 T o view a video on iPod classic: m Choose Videos and browse for a video . When you play the video , you see and hear it. T o listen to a music video ’ s sound or a video podcast ’ s sound without playing the video: m Choose Music and browse f or a music video or a video podcast.
42 Chapter 3 Video Features T o use the Apple Componen t A V Cable to c onnec t iP od classic to your T V: 1 Plug the green, blue, and red video connectors into the component video input ( Y , Pb , and P r) ports on your T V . Y ou can also use the Apple Composite A V cable.
4 43 4 Photo F eatures Y ou can impor t digital photos to your comput er and add them to iP od classic. Y ou can view your photos on iP od classic or as a slideshow on y our T V .
44 Chapter 4 Photo Features iPhoto is av ailable for purchase as part of the iLife suite of applications at www .apple.com/ilif e. iPhoto might already be installed on your Mac , in the Applications folder . If you don ’t ha ve iPhoto , you can impor t photos using Image Capture.
