6 Chapter 1 iPod Basics The follo wing table shows you what else you can do with iP od controls. To Do This Reset iP od (if your iP od isn ’t re sponding) Set the Hold switch to Hold and turn it off again. Pr ess the Menu and Center buttons at the same time f or about 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

8 Chapter 1 iPod Basics Using iP od Menus When you turn on iP od, you see the main menu. Choose menu items to per form functions and go to other menus. Status icons along the top of the screen show iP od settings. Adding or Remo ving Items Fr om the Main Menu Y ou might want to add often-used items to the iP od main menu.
Chapter 1 iPod Basics 9 Setting the Back light Timer Y ou can set the back light to turn on and illuminate the screen for a certain amount of time when you press a butt on or use the Click Wheel. The default is 1 0 seconds . m Choose Settings > Back light Timer and choose the time you want.
10 Chapter 1 iPod Basics Note: Y ou can download songs while your battery is charging. Disconnecting iP od Y ou can easily see if it ’ s OK to disconnect iPod b y looking at the i P od screen. Important: Don ’t disc onnect iPod if y ou see the “Do not disconnect ” message.

Y ou use i P od by importing songs, audiobooks, videos, and podcasts (radio-style audio shows) to your c omputer and then downloading them to iP od.

16 Chapter 2 Music Features Impor ting Music F rom Y our Audio CDs In to i T unes F ollow these instructions to get music from y our CDs into your comput er . T o impor t music from an audio CD into i T unes: 1 Inser t a CD into y our computer and open iT unes.

20 Chapter 2 Music Features T o make a playlist in iT unes: 1 Click the Add button. 2 T ype a name f or the playlist in the Source list. Click Librar y , and then drag a song or other item to the pla ylist in the Source list. T o select multiple songs, hold the C ommand ( x ) key or Shif t key as you click each song.

22 Chapter 2 Music Features While music is being downloaded from your c omputer to iP od, the iT unes status window shows progr ess, and the iP od icon in the Source list flashes r ed. When the download is complete , a message in iT unes says “iP od update is complete .
Chapter 2 Music Features 23 Updating iP od Manually Setting iT unes to let y ou update iP od manually give s you the most flexibility for managing music on your iP od. Y ou can add and delete songs and other items individually . Also , you can add songs from multiple c omputers to your iP od without deleting songs already on iP od.
24 Chapter 2 Music Features Downloading P odcasts to iP od Settings to download podcasts to an iP od are separate from settings to transfer songs. P odcast transfer settings don't aff ect song transfer settings, and vice versa.
Chapter 2 Music Features 25 Pla ying Music After you download music and other a udio to your iP od, y ou can listen to it. Use the Click Wheel and Cen ter button to br owse for a song , audiobook, video , or podcast. Y ou only see menu items for P odcasts and Audiobooks if you ’ve do wnloaded those items to iP od.
26 Chapter 2 Music Features Depending on what type of audio you’ re listening to , you can press the Cen ter button repeatedly from the No w Playing screen to get t o other information and options , such as the rating screen for songs and a udiobooks, album ar t, podcast information, reading speed , and more.
Chapter 2 Music Features 27 T o play songs in the On-The-Go playlist: m Choose Music > Playlists > On-T he-Go and choose a song. T o remove a song from the On-T he-Go playlist: m Select a song in the playlist, and hold down the C enter button un til the song title flashes.
28 Chapter 2 Music Features Y ou can press Play to hear the curren tly selected song play while you select the maximum volume limit. 3 Pr ess the Cen ter button to set the maximum volume limit. A triangle on the volume bar indicates the maximum v olume limit.
