1 G ETTING S T ARTED 1.1 I MPORT ANT S AFETY I NSTRUCTIONS • W ARNING: The safety of the product can be maintained only if it is examined regularly for damage and wear .

1.2 N EW F EA TURES The Integrated LCD Console on the T ot al Body T rainer brings together the best LCD technology and the best cardio equipment. It combines eye-catching entertainment with an interactive exercise experience.
1.3 S ETUP Read the Operation Manual before setting up the T otal Body Trainer . E LECTRICAL P OWER R EQUIREMENTS The T otal Body Trainer requires an AC power supply according to the electrical configurations listed in the chart below . NOTE: Do not modify the plug provided with this product.
F ITNESS N ETWORKING One type RJ45 networking port (A) allows the T otal Body T rainer to be connected to a network, such as FitLinxx TM interactive fit- ness network.
2 T HE D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE 2.1 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE O VERVIEW The computerized display console allows the user to tailor a workout to personal fitness abilities and goals and to monitor progress. With this easy-to-use console, the user can track fitness improvement from one workout to the next.
2.2 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE D ESCRIPTIONS This section lists and describes the functions for the buttons on the T ouchscreen Display and the keys on the Control Panel on the T otal Body Trainer . See Section 4, titled The Workout s , for detailed information on using the console to set up workout s.
B. WORKOUT SELECTIONS: Allows the user to choose from eight different programs. MANUAL, RANDOM, F A T BURN, CARDIO, AND HILL lead straight into workout setup screens.
2) W ORKOUT S ETUP WORKOUT SETUP screens are accessed automatically upon selection of a workout program. They allow the user to enter values or to choose a goal for the workout selected. These depend on the workout, but might include goal type (time, distance or calories), level, age, weight, and t arget heart rate* (for heart rate programs).
T YPES OF W ORKOUT S ETUP S CREENS G OAL S ETUP S CREENS • Goal T ype: The default setting of Goal T ype is TIME (length of workout). Allows the user to choose a predetermined length of time for the workout.
3) W ORKOUT P ROGRESS The Workout Progress screen opens automatically upon completion of the setup, signaling the user to start the workout. The Workout Progress screen allows the user to monitor the progress of the workout.
• REVERSE : Press this key to activate a workout mode that alternates forward motion with reverse motion. It can be used with any workout, except for Fat Burn, Cardio, Heart Rate Hill, Heart Rate Interval or Extreme Heart Rate. For more information on using modes, see Selecting a Workout Mode in Section 4.
W. TV SELECTION: TV ON/OFF accesses the TV , and enables the Channel and V olume keys on the Surrounding Console. TV ZOOM (far bottom right) toggles the user between large and small screen TV viewing. X. CHANNEL CONTROLS: Accesses the Channel Select keypad on the touchscreen.
O PTIONAL C HANNEL S ELECTION M ENUS If Favorites and/or Channel List options are enabled, an Options menu will be enabled for selecting a desired channel selection interface. DD. CHANNEL SELECT : Accesses the Channel Select keypad. EE. F A VORITE: If enabled, use to toggle to Favorite Channel selection.
C ONTROL P ANEL The Control Panel allows the user to control workout and TV p arameters without leaving the Workout Progress screen. It also provides a quick and easy way for maintenance staf f to clean the T ouchscreen Display without activating the screen.
D. QUICK ST AR T : Choose this to enter directly into a workout, bypassing setup screens E. CH: Channel control for the TV . F. VOL: V olume control for the TV . G. : Headphone jack for sound playback. NOTE: Headphones are necessary to access the sound for the TV .
3 H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE 3.1 W HY H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE ? Research shows that maintaining a specific heart rate while exercising is the optimal way to monitor the intensity of a workout and to achieve maximum results.
3.2 H EART R AT E M ONITORING T HE L IFEPULSE TM D IGIT AL H EART R AT E M ONITORING S YSTEM The patented Lifepulse system sensors are the built-in heart rate monitoring system on the T otal Body T rainer . For the most accurate reading possible, during a workout: • Grasp the sensors (A) firmly .
T HE P OLAR ® T ELEMETRY H EART R AT E M ONITORING C HEST S TRAP The T ota l Body T rainer is equipped with Polar ® heart rate monitoring system in which electrodes, pressed against the skin, transfer heart rate signals to the console. These electrodes are att ached to a chest strap that the user wears during the workout.
4 T HE W ORKOUTS 4.1 W ORKOUT O VERVIEWS This section lists the T ota l Body T rainer ’ s pre-programmed workout s. For more detailed information, see Section 4.2, titled Using the Workouts . QUICK ST ART is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it byp asses the steps involved in selecting a specific workout program.
PERSONAL TRAINER workouts are customized workouts designed either for the advanced user or to be used in connection with a personal trainer . These workout s include: CROSS-TRAIN AEROBICS simulates the experience of working with a personal trainer .
3) E NTERING W ORKOUT G OALS S ELECTING A G OAL T YPE Goal T ype default s to TIME (length of workout). When prompted to enter a Goal T ime, use the ARROW KEYS to increase or decrease the displayed time to the desired value, or key in the desired value with the NUMERIC KEYP AD, and press ENTER.
S ELECTING AND A DJUSTING THE I NTENSITY L EVEL When prompted, use the ARROW keys to increase or decrease the displayed intensity level or tar- get heart rate* to the desired value, or choose the desired value with the NUMERIC KEYP AD, and press ENTER.
6) C HANGING /E NDING W ORKOUTS S WITCHING W ORKOUTS “O N - THE -F LY ” It is possible during a workout, to switch to another workout program. After a switch, the console retains all the progress information about the workout since it s beginning.
29 4.3 W ORKOUT D ESCRIPTIONS Q UICK S T ART QUICK ST ART is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the steps of selecting a specific workout program. The intensity level for the workout is set automatically and remains the same unless manually changed.
30 T OT AL B ODY T RAINER W ORKOUT S ETUP S TEPS NOTE: AFTER ENTERING A V ALUE (AGE, WEIGHT , HEIGHT , GENDER) OR A GOAL (TIME, LEVEL, THR), PRESS ENTER T O REGISTER THE SELECTION. * This workout requires the user to wear the polar heart rate chest strap or the grip the Life pulse sensors.
31 H ILL The Life Fitness-patented HILL workout of fers a variety of configurations for interval training. Intervals are periods of intense aerobic exercise separated by regular periods of lower-intensity exercise.
H ILL P LUS The Life Fitness patented HILL PLUS workouts give even more ways to vary interval training. Based on the same principles as the HILL workout, Hill Plus workouts are customized to resem- bl.
33 Z ONE T RAINING Zone T raining workouts t arget specific ranges, or zones, for maintaining a heart rate to achieve maximum exercise results. 1) H EART R AT E H ILL TM This program combines the standard HILL workout profile with the concept of Heart Rate Zone T raining.
2) H EART R AT E I NTERV AL TM This program also combines the standard HILL workout profile with the concept of Heart Rate Zone T raining. The default t arget heart rate* is calculated as 80 percent of the theoretical maxi- mum † (HRmax), but the user can adjust the target rate during the workout setup.
35 3) E XTREME H EART R AT E TM This intense, varied workout is designed to help more experienced users break through fitness improvement plateaus. The workout alternates between two t arget heart rates* as quickly as possi- ble. The ef fect is similar to that of running sprints.
36 4) P ERSONAL T RAINER Personal T rainer workouts are customized workout s designed either for the advanced user or to be used in connection with a personal trainer . 1) C ROSS -T RAIN A EROBICS During this workout, the unit prompts the user to emphasize dif ferent muscle groups.
37 3) L IFE F ITNESS F IT T EST The Life Fitness Fit T est program is another exclusive feature of this versatile cross-trainer . The Life Fitness Fit T est measures cardiovascular fitness and can be used to monitor improvements in endurance every four to six weeks.
The computer will not accept: O heart rates less than 52 or greater than 200 beats per minute O body weights less than 75 pounds (34 kg) or greater than 400 pounds (182 kg) O ages below 10 or over 99 .

40 5 S YSTEM O PTIONS M ENU 5.1 U SING THE S YSTEM O PTIONS M ENU Fitness club managers and other authorized personnel can use the Systems Options feature to change default settings, or to enable or disable certain programs or displays on the cross-trainer console, to run systems checks, and to access compiled statistics.
41 5.2 C ONFIGURA TION M ENU 1) M ANAGERS C ONFIGURA TION 1 Manager's Configuration accesses defaults for W orkout Duration Configuration, Language, User Language, Program T imeout, Units (English or Metric), System Beeps, Pause Time, Marathon Mode, Custom Message Setup, and S tand By Configuration.
42 C USTOM M ESSAGES This configuration allows for a custom message to be displayed across the Welcome Screen. Creating/Changing a Custom Message — After entering the Manager ’s Configuration, check to make sure that Custom Message is enabled, then select CUSTOM MESSAGE SETUP.
Max V olume Setup: Opens the Max V olume controls. (Head phones must be used for this func- tion.) The upper set of arrows adjust s the volume capacity higher or lower , allowing clubs to com- pensate for average noise levels within. The maximum volume returns to this default af ter each workout.
S ECURE C HANNEL Opens the Secure Channel Setup screen. If enabled, one existing input channel can be selected to be a dedicated channel for non-broadcast use. Select the Channel Change button to scroll up or down to the desired channel. Select the Name Change button to input a name for the secure channel using the the keyboard display .
45 For Level workouts, each interval is identified by the time at which it occurs during the workout. For target heart rate workout s, each interval is identified by a number (1 - 30). If Level is selected, a graph shows up displaying each interval. For T arget Heart Rate workout one graph shows up display- ing each interval.

6.4 T ROUBLESHOOTING THE L IFEPULSE S YSTEM S ENSORS If the heart rate reading is erratic or missing, do the following: • Dry the hands if necessary to prevent slipping. • Apply hands to all four sensors, located at the front and back of the hand grips.
