When you start up, a disk icon with a blinking question mark appears in the middle of the screen. Th is ic on indic ates t hat y our Macint osh c annot find the s y stem s o ft w are it n eeds t o star t up .
When you try to start up from a floppy disk, a disk icon with an X appears in the middle of the screen and the floppy disk is ejected. Thi s i c on i ndic ate s that the fl opp y dis k y ou tried t o star t up from is not a star tup dis k. Wa it a f e w seconds .
The hard disk icon does not appear on the desktop. If y ou don ’ t see a hard di s k ic on on the des k top , try the f ollo wi n g: m If the hard di s k is inter nal, shut do wn y our computer , w ait at lea st 1 0 seconds , and then tur n it on a g ain.
Your Macintosh can’t read a floppy disk. If y ou see a me s sa ge t hat a flopp y dis k is unreadable , try on e of t h e f oll o wi ng: m If the dis k has ne v er been used, y ou ma y simp l y n eed t o initi alize it. F or ins t ruc t i ons, see t he “Dis ks ” top ic o f Macint osh Gu ide , a v ail able in the Guide ( h ) menu .

2 Find and open the Disk First Aid icon. Y ou ma y n eed t o l ook i n a fo lder c alled Utilit ie s to f ind Dis k First Aid. After Di s k First Aid star ts , f oll o w the i nstr uct i ons on the screen. Di s k First Aid c heck s y our har d dis k f or any pr oblem s .
9C lick Continue. The E a s y Ins t all dial o g bo x appears . 10 Make sure that the hard disk named in the box is the one on which you want to install system software. If it isn ’ t , c lic k S witc h Dis k until t he cor rect di s k name appears .

3W hen Disk First Aid has finished checking your hard disk, choose Quit from the File menu. If y ou are u s i ng the c omputer ’ s inter nal hard di s k as the star tup dis k, g o t o step 8 . If y ou are us i ng an App le ex ter nal SC S I har d dis k as t he star tup dis k, c ont i nue with step 4 .
10 Click Continue. The E a s y Ins t all dial o g bo x appears . 11 Make sure that the hard disk named in the Destination Disk box is the one on which you want to install system software. If it isn ’ t , c lic k S witc h Dis k until t he cor rect di s k name appears .
13 Click the Install New System Folder button and click OK. The E a s y Ins t all dial o g bo x appears . Th e I nstall butt on has c ha n ged t o Clean In stall , and the contents o f y our old S y stem F ol der ha v e been mo v ed t o a new fol d e r named Pre v ious S y stem F ol der .
