Chapter 1: Introduction The Linksys Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router Congratulations on your purchase of an EtherF ast ® Cable/DSL W ireless-Ready Router with 4-P ort Switch.
Chapter 2: Getting to Know the Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router The Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router’ s Rear Panel The back panel of the Router is where all of the Router’ s connections are made. WA N The W AN (Wide Area Netw ork) P ort is where you will connect your cab le or DSL modem.
The Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router’ s Front Panel LEDs Diag Red . The Diag LED illuminates when the Router goes through its self-diagnosis mode during boot-up and restart. It will turn off upon successful completion of the diagnosis. If this LED stays on for an abnormally long period of time, refer to the T roubleshooting section.
Chapter 3: Connecting the Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router to Y our Network Overview Unlike a simple hub or switch, the setup of the Cab le/DSL W ireless-Ready Router consists of more than simply plugging e verything together .
6. T o use the Reset button: While holding do wn the Reset button, unplug the po w er adapter from the Router . W ait three seconds while continuing to hold do wn the Reset button. Then plug the po wer adapter back into the Router . The Diag LED will flash twice.
4. Click the Properties button, and then choose the IP Addr ess tab . Select Obtain an IP addr ess automatically . (See F igure 3-2.) Click on the Gatew a y tab and make sure that all f ields there are empty . Click OK . 5. The Netw ork Properties windo w will reappear .
3. Conf igure the wireless functions of the w eb utility using the follo wing instructions. (Refer to Chapter 6 for more infor mation.) A. Access the w eb utility by opening your w eb browser and typing http://192.168.1.1 in the bro wser’ s Address bo x.
• Access Control Pro vides access to y our netw ork for other PCs. Y ou’ll need to enter the MA C Address, then click on Add for an y PC that you w ant to add. Click on Appl y when f inished. • Channel Select the appropriate channel from the list pro vided to corre- spond with your netw ork settings, between 1 and 11.
2. A username and passw ord prompt will appear . Leave the User Name bo x empty and type admin (the default passw ord) in the P assw ord bo x. Click OK . (See Figure 5-2.) 3. The Cab le/DSL W ireless-Ready Router’ s Setup page will appear . (See F igure 5-3.

Setup p The basic Setup screen is the f irst screen you will see when y ou access the Utility . If you ha ve already installed and set up y our router , you ha ve already seen this screen and ha ve already properl y conf igured all of the screen’ s values.

RAS (Remote Access Service) is a ser vice used in Singapore only . If you are using a RAS connection, check with your ISP for the necessary setup information.
3. The following screen will appear , verifying that y ou are enabling WEP Encryption. Press the OK button to continue. (See Figure 6-4.) 4. The following screen will appear , where you will choose y our WEP Encryption settings. For the Authentication T ype, select Open System (default setting).
This tab displa ys the cur rent status of the Router; it reflects data and selections that you ha ve entered under the setup tab . All of the information provided on this screen is read-onl y . T o make changes, select the Setup tab . • Host Name This f ield sho ws the name of your Router .
A DHCP (Dynamic Host Conf iguration Protocol) Ser ver automaticall y assigns IP addresses to each computer on your netw ork. Unless you already hav e one, it is highly recommended that y our router be set up as a DHCP server . • DHCP Serv er Check the Enab le option to enable the DHCP server option of the router .
Help Under the Help tab, you’ ll f ind links to all of the Router’ s inter nal support doc- umentation, including the application that upgrades the Router’ s f ir mware. New f ir mware v ersions are posted at www .linksys.com and can be downloaded for free.
Filters b lock specif ic internal users from accessing the Internet. Y ou can set up a f ilter through an IP address or a netw ork port number . Filtered Private IP Range • T o set up a f ilter using IP addresses, enter the range of IP addresses you wish to f ilter in the IP address f ields.
For This screen displa ys preset application settings as well as options for cus- tomization of port ser vices for other applications. The Preset Applications are among the most widel y used Internet applications.
T o add a customized application in the UPnP F orwarding screen: 1. Enter the name of the application in the appropriate Customized Applications f ield. Continue with the f ields on the same line. 2. In the Ext. P ort f ield , enter the number of the external por t used by the server .
W ith Dynamic Routing y ou can automaticall y adjust to ph ysical changes in the netw ork’ s layout. Using RIP protocol, the router deter mines the route of the netw ork packets based on the fe west number of hops betw een the source and the destination.
Subnet Mask The Subnet Mask (also kno wn as the Netw ork Mask) deter- mines which portion of an IP address is the network portion, and which portion is the host por tion.
MA C Address Cloning allo ws you to assign the Router a MA C address, which is a 12-digit code assigned to a unique piece of hardware for identif ication, like a Social Security number . Some ISPs require that y ou register the MA C address of your netw ork card/adapter, which w as connected to y our cable or DSL modem during installation.
3. I can’t browse through the Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router . • Check if both ends of the netw ork cable and po wer adapter are properly connected. Check if the status LEDs on the front panel are functioning properly . • If using W indows 95 or W indo ws 98, check the TCP/IP setup on the client side.
Does the Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router support any operating system other than Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT , or Windows XP? Y es, but Linksys does not at this time pro vide technical support for setup, conf iguration or troubleshooting of any non-W indows operating systems.
If DMZ is used, does the exposed user share the public IP with the Router? No. Does the Router pass PPTP packets or actively route PPTP sessions? The router allo ws PPTP packets to pass through. Is the Router cross-platform compatible? Any platform that supports Ether net and TCP/IP is compatible with the router .
3. At the DOS command prompt , type ping mail . (assuming that the loca- tion for which y ou’ re trying to f ind an IP address is conf igured as “mail”). Press Enter . Information such as the following data, taken from a ping of Microsoft Netw ork’ s e-mail ser ver , will be display ed.
Appendix C: Installing the T C P /IP Protocol F ollo w these instructions to install the TCP/IP Protocol on one of your PCs only after a netw ork card has been successfully installed inside the PC. These instructions are for W indo ws 95, 98 or Millennium.
Appendix D: T wisted-Pair Cabling There are different grades, or categories, of twisted-pair cab ling. Category 5 is the most reliable and is highl y recommended. Category 3 is a good second choice. Straight-through cables are used for connecting computers to a hub .
Appendix E: Glossar y Ad-hoc Networ k - An ad-hoc network is a wireless netw ork or other small net- w ork in which some of the netw ork devices are part of the network onl y for the duration of a communications session, while others sta y in close pro ximity to the rest of the netw ork.
