Registering iP od touch Before you can use an y of the iP od touch feature s, you must use iT unes to set up iP od touch. Y ou can also register iP od touch and create an iT unes Stor e account (not available in some c ountries) if you don ’t already ha ve one.

Applications P ane Use the Applications pane to s pecify which App Store applications you w ant synced on iP od touch. Any applications do wnloaded directly to iPod touch are automatically backed up to your iT unes library when you sync.

Similarly , when y ou disable contacts or calendars in an MobileMe or Exchange account, or if y ou del ete an accoun t, iP od touch a sks if y ou wan t to keep inf ormation or delet e it. Y ou can add contacts using an LDAP account if your compan y or organization suppor ts it.

Chapter 2 Basics 21 Y ou can create up to 1 1 screens. The number of dots above the Dock shows the number of screens you hav e, and indicates which screen you ’ re viewing. Switch to another Home screen: F lick left or right, or tap to the left or right of the row of dots.
V olume Buttons When you ’ re listening to songs , movies, or other media, the buttons on the side of iP od touch adjust the audio volume . Other wise, the buttons contr ol the volume for aler ts and other sound e ff ec ts. Note: V olume buttons aren ’t included on the first-generation iP o d touch.
Chapter 2 Basics 23 Scrolling Drag up or down to scroll. On some screens such as webpages, you can also scroll side to side. Dragging your finger to scroll w on’ t choose or activate anything on the screen.
Lists Some lists have an index along the right side. Find it ems in an indexed list: T ap a letter to jump to items starting with that letter . Drag your finger along the index to scroll quickly through the list. Index Choose an item: T ap an item in the list.
Chapter 2 Basics 25 Viewing in Landscape Many iP od touch applications let you view the screen in either portrait or landscape orientation. Rotate iP o d touch and the dis play rotates too , adjusting aut omatically to fit the new screen orientation.
T yping Depending on the application you ’ re using, the intelligent keyboard may automatically suggest corrections as you type to help prevent mistyped words. Enter te xt: 1 T ap a text field, such as in a note or new contact, to bring up the k eyboard .
Chapter 2 Basics 27 Dictionar y F or many languages, iPod touch has dictionaries to help you type. The appropriate dictionar y is activated automatically when y ou select a suppor ted keyboard. F or a list of suppor ted languages, see www .apple.com/ipodtouch/specs .
Select text: T ap the inser tion point to display the selection buttons. T ap Selec t to select the adjacent word or tap Select All to select all text. When you’ re t yping, you can also double-tap to select a word. In read-only documents, such as webpages or email you ’ve received , touch and hold to selec t a word .

Bluetooth Status The Bluetooth icon appears in the iP od touch status bar at the t op of the screen: (blue) or (white): Bluetooth is on and a device is connected to iP od touch. ( The color depends on the current color of the status bar .) (gray): Bluetooth is on but no device is connected.
Chapter 2 Basics 33 VPN Acce ss VPN (vir tual private netw ork) provides secure access o ver the Internet to privat e networks, such as the network at your company or school. Use Network settings to configure and turn on VPN. See “ Network ” on page 1 1 3.
Important: If iP od touch is very low on power , it may display one of the f ollowing images, indicating that iPod touch needs to charge for up t o ten minutes before y ou can use it. If iP od touch is extremely low on power , the display ma y be blank for up to two minutes befor e one of the low-battery images appears.
Chapter 2 Basics 35 The F ind My iPhone feature helps you locate iP o d touch if it’ s been lost or misplaced , and display a message on y our iP od touch to help someone return it to you . It includes Remote Wipe, which lets you erase all the information on iP od touch in case you don ’t recov er it, in order to protect your priv acy.
Restar ting and Resetting iP od touch If something isn ’t working right, restarting, force quitting an applica tion, or resetting iP od touch will likely solve the problem. Restart iPod touch: P ress and hold the Sleep/W ake button until the red slider appears.
37 Viewing W ebpages Safari lets you sur f the web and view webpages on iP od touch in the same way as if you were on y our computer . Y ou can create bookmarks on i P od touch and sync bookmarks with your computer . Add web clips for quick access to y our favorite sites directly from the Home screen.
Opening W ebpages Open a webpage: T ap the address field (on the left side of the title bar), then type the web address and tap Go . If the address field isn ’t visible , tap the status bar at the top of the screen to quickly scroll to the address field at the top of the w ebpage.
Chapter 3 Safari 39 See a link’ s destination addr ess T ouch and hold the link. The address pops up next to your finger . Y ou can touch and hold an image to see if it has a link. Stop a webpage from loading T ap . Reload a webpage T ap . Return to the previous or next page T ap or at the bottom of the screen.
Bring up the keyboard T ap inside a tex t field. Move to another te xt field T ap another tex t field, or tap the Nex t or Previous button. Submit a form Once you finish filling out a form, tap G o or Search. Most pages also have a link you can tap to submit the form.

Y ou can display playback con trols at any time when you ’ re listening t o music and using another application—or even when iP od touch is locked—by double-clicking the Home butt on. If you’ re using an application, the playback controls appear on t op of the application.

Using Genius on iP od touch Genius automatically creates a pla ylist of songs from your library that go great together . It’ s lik e having a built-in DJ who knows your tastes w ell enough to make the right mix just for you. T o use Genius on i P od touch, you first need to set up Genius in iT unes , then sync iPod touch with iT unes.
Chapter 4 Music and Video 51 Making On-The-Go Playlists Make an on-the-go playlist: 1 T ap Playlists and tap On-The-Go. 2 Browse f or songs using the buttons at the bottom of the screen. T ap any song or video to add it to the playlist. T ap Add All Songs at the top of any list of songs to add all the songs in the list.
The s crubber b ar lets you skip t o any point along the timelin e. Y ou can ad just the scrub rate by sliding your finger do wn as you drag the playhead along the scrubber bar . Chapter 4 Music and Video 53 Searching Video Y ou can search the titles of movies , T V shows, and video podcasts you ’ve synced to iP od touch. Search video: Enter text in the search field at the top of the list of videos. Search results appear automa tically as you type.
When you delete a video (other than ren ted movies) from iP od t ouch, it isn ’t deleted from your iT unes librar y and you can sync the video back to iP od touch later . If you don ’t want to sync the video back t o iPod touch, set iT unes to not sync the video .
55 About the App Store Y ou can search for , browse , review , purchase , and download applications from the App Store directly to iP od touch. Applications you download and install from the App St ore on iP od touch are backed up to your iT unes librar y the next time you sync iPod touch with your computer .
Brow sing and Searching Browse the f eatured selections to see new releases and App Store r ecommendations. Browse T op 25 to see the most popular applica tions. If you ’ re looking for a specific application, use Search. Browse applica tions: T ap F eatured , Categories , or T op 25 .
Chapter 5 App Store 57 Info Screen T ap any application in a list to see more information, such as the application’ s price , screenshots, reviews, and other information. If you’ ve already installed the application, “Installed” appears instead of the price on the Info screen.
Downloading Applications When you find an application you wan t in the App Store , you can purchase and download it to iP od touch. If the application is free, you can download it without charge after providing your iT unes account information. Once you download an application, it ’ s immediately installed on iP od touch.
Chapter 5 App Store 59 Deleting Applications Y ou can delete applications you ’ve installed from the App St ore. I f you delete an application, data associated with the application will no longer be a vailable to iP od touch, even if you r einstall the application.
Updating Applications Whenever you acce ss the App Store , it checks for updates t o applications you’ ve installed. The App Store also a utomatically checks for updates ev er y week. The A pp Store icon shows the t otal number of application updates av ailable.
61 Mail works with MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, and many of the most popular email systems—including Y ahoo! Mail, Google email, and AOL—as well as other industry- standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive embedded photos and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachments.
3 T ap Cc/Bcc/From if you w ant to copy or blind copy the message t o others, or change the account you send the message fr om. If you have mor e than one email account, you can tap the F rom field to change the account y ou’ re sending from. 4 Enter a subject, then your message .
Chapter 6 Mail 63 Checking and Reading Email The Mail icon shows the total number of unread message s in all your inboxe s. Y ou may have other unread me ssages in other mailboxe s. Number of unread emails in your inboxes Check for new messages: Choose a mailbox or tap at any time.
Zoom in on part of a message Double-tap an area of the message to zoom in. Double-tap again to zoom out. Resize any c olumn of text to fit the screen Double-tap the text. Resize a message manually Pinch to zoom in or out. Follo w a link T ap the link.
Chapter 6 Mail 65 Y ou can view attachments in portrait or landscape or ientation. If the format of an attached file isn ’t supported by iP od touch, you can see the name of the file but you can ’t open it. iP od touch supports the following document types: .
Open a meeting invitation: T ap the invitation. Y ou can get contact information for the organiz er and other attendees, set an aler t, add notes to the even t, and add comments that are included in y our response emailed to the organizer . Y ou can accept, tentatively accept, or decline the invitation.
Chapter 6 Mail 67 Organizing Email Y ou can delete messages one at a time , or select a group to delete all at once. Y ou can also move message s from one mailbox or folder to another . Delete a message: Open the message and tap . Or tap Edit, then tap nex t to the message.
68 About Calendar Calendar lets you view individual calendars for y our di ff erent accounts or a combined calendar for all accounts . Y ou can view your even ts in a continuous list, by da y , or by month, and search even ts by title, invitee, or location.

Responding to Meeting In vitations If you have a Microsoft Exchange accoun t set up on iPod touch with Calendars enabled, you can receive and res pond to meeting invitations fr om people in your organization. When y ou receive an invita tion, the meeting appears in your calendar with a dotted line around it.
