Engine compartment 271 Coolant level The engine coolant is a mixture of water and anticorrosion/antifreeze. When checking the coolant level, the vehicle must be parked on level ground, and the coolant temperature must be below 158‡ (70†).
Tires and wheels 272 ! Only use washer fluid which is suitable for plastic lenses. Improper washer fluid can damage the plastic lenses of the headlamps. ! Do not use distilled or de-ionized water in the washer fluid reservoir. Otherwise, the washer fluid level sensor could be damaged.
Tires and wheels 273 result in the bolts loosening and possibly an accident. Retreaded tires are not tested or recommended by Mercedes-Benz, since previous damage cannot always be recognized on retreads. The operating safety of the vehicle cannot be assured when such tires are used.
Tires and wheels 274 Replace the tire if you find any of the above conditions. Make sure you also inspect the spare tire periodically for condition and inflation. Spare tires will age and become worn over time even if never used, and thus should be inspected and replaced when necessary.
Tires and wheels 275 Direction of rotation Unidirectional tires offer added advantages, such as better hydroplaning performance. To benefit, however, you must make sure the tires rotate in the direction specified. An arrow on the sidewall indicates the intended direction of rotation (spinning) of the tire.

Tires and wheels 292 Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards The Uniform Tire Quality Grading is a U.S. Government requirement designed to give drivers consistent and reliable information regarding tire performance. Tire manufacturers are required to grade tires based on three performance factors: treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance.
Tires and wheels 293 Mercedes-Benz recommends winter tires ( Y page 297) with a minimum tread depth of approximately 1 / 6 in (4 mm) on all four wheels for the winter season to ensure normal balanced handling characteristics. On packed snow, they can reduce your stopping distance compared to summer tires.
Tires and wheels 294 Aspect ratio Dimensional relationship between tire section height and section width expressed in percentage. Bar Another metric unit for air pressure. There are 14.5038 pounds per square inch (psi) to 1 bar; there are 100 kilopascals (kPa) to 1 bar.
Tires and wheels 295 Maximum permissible tire inflation pressure This number is the greatest amount of air pressure that should ever be put in the tire. Normal occupant weight The number of occupants the vehicle is designed to seat, multiplied by 68 kilograms (150 lb).
Tires and wheels 296 Traction Force exerted by the vehicle on the road via the tires. The amount of grip provided. Tread The portion of a tire that comes into contact with the road. Treadwear indicators Narrow bands, sometimes called “wear bars” that show across the tread of a tire when only 1 / 16 in (1.
Winter driving 297 Winter driving General information Have your vehicle winterized at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Winter tires G Warning! Winter tires with a tread depth of less than 1 / 6 in (4 mm) must be replaced. They are no longer suitable for winter operation.
