Seat belts Important safety guidelines The use of seat belts, infant or child restraints is required by law in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. territories and all Canadian provinces. Even where this is not the case, all vehicle occupants should have their seat belts fastened when the vehicle is in motion.

Children in the vehicle Important safety guidelines G Warning When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, even if they are secured in a child restraint system, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
Please read the warning labels affixed to the interior of the vehicle or to the infant restraint or child restraint system. G Warning Accident statistics show that children secured in the rear seats are safer than children secured in the front-passenger seat.

G Warning! Do not pump the brake pedal. Use firm, steady brake pedal pressure instead. Pumping the brake pedal reduces the braking effect. ABS regulates brake pressure in such a way that the wheels do not lock when you brake. This allows you to continue steering the vehicle when braking.
G Warning Never switch off the ESP ® when you see the d warning lamp flashing in the instrument cluster. In this case proceed as follows: R When driving off, apply as little throttle as possible. R While driving, ease up on the accelerator pedal. R Adapt your speed and driving style to the prevailing road conditions.
X To deactivate: press button : . The d warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up. G Warning When the d ESP ® warning lamp is illuminated continuously, the ESP ® is switched off or is not operational due to a malfunction. Vehicle stability in standard driving maneuvers is reduced.
The · distance warning lamp in the instrument cluster will light up. R you are approaching the vehicle in front rapidly. An intermittent warning tone will then sound and the · distance warning lamp in the instrument cluster will light up.
X To arm: lock the vehicle with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO. The turn signal lamps flash three times to indicate that the vehicle is locked. Indicator lamp : flashes to indicate that the alarm system is armed. i If the turn signal lamps do not flash three times, a door or the tailgate may not be properly closed.

When it is dark, the surround lighting also comes on if it is activated in the on-board computer. i Only for USA: This equipment complies with Part 15 of the FCC regulations. Operation is subject to the following conditions: R this equipment must not emit harmful, electromagnetic radiation.
This may impair the functioning of KEYLESS- GO. R To open or close the vehicle, the KEYLESS- GO key should be no more than 3 ft (1 m) from the door or tailgate. R When the vehicle is parked for more than 72 hours, the KEYLESS-GO function is deactivated.
If you pull on the handle of the tailgate, only the cargo area of the vehicle is unlocked. i If the vehicle has been parked for a long time, you must pull the door handle to activate the KEYLESS-GO functions.
G Warning! Batteries are toxic and contain caustic substances. For this reason, keep batteries out of the reach of children. If a battery has been swallowed, visit a doctor immediately. G Warning SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate material, which may require special handling and regard for the environment.
Problems with the SmartKey Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions You cannot lock/ unlock the vehicle using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged. X Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door handle from a distance of approximately 1.
Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The engine cannot be started using the SmartKey. The on-board voltage is too low. X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior lighting, and try to start the engine again. If this does not work: X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( Y page 308).
Unlocking and opening doors from the inside You can open a door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked, unless the child- proof locks have been activated ( Y page 66).
Unlocking the driver's door (mechanical key) If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked centrally with the key or KEYLESS-GO: X Take the mechanical key out of the key ( Y page 77). X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.

If the tailgate touches an object while closing, the closing procedure is interrupted and the tailgate reopens. i Only with KEYLESS-GO: if you leave a KEYLESS-GO key in the cargo compartment, the tailgate will not lock. The tailgate is not closed unless a KEYLESS-GO key is detected.

Convenience opening You can ventilate the vehicle before you start driving. To do this, you can use the key to simultaneously: R open the side windows R open the hinged side windows R open the tilt/sl.
Using KEYLESS-GO The SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO must be outside the vehicle but no more than 3 ft (1 m) away from a door. X Close all the doors. X Keep locking button : on the door handle pressed until the side windows and the tilt/ sliding sunroof or panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel are fully closed.
Sliding sunroof Important safety guidelines G Warning! When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch. Always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, even if they are secured in a child restraint system, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
The tilt/sliding panel operates differently when the roof panel switch is pressed and held. See the relevant section in this chapter for details. The opening/closing procedure of the tilt/ sliding pan.
Resetting Reset the tilt/sliding sunroof if it does not open smoothly, or if the battery has been disconnected or has become discharged. ! Contact a qualified specialist workshop if the tilt/sliding sunroof cannot be closed fully or reset. X Remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock or turn to position 0 (KEYLESS-GO).
panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel is closed. G Warning! When extending the roller sunblinds, make sure no one is in danger of being injured by the extending procedure. The extending of the roller sunblinds can be immediately halted by releasing the switch.
G Warning! You could be severely or even fatally injured when closing the sliding sunroof with increased closing force or if the anti- entrapment feature is deactivated.

Seats Important safety guidelines G Warning In order to avoid possible loss of vehicle control, all seat, head restraint, steering wheel and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fastening of seat belts, must be done before setting the vehicle in motion.
Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident. ! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: R do not spill any liquids on the seats.
Adjusting the head restraints Adjusting the head restraints manually Adjusting the head restraint height 9 ! The head restraints may only be removed in a qualified specialist workshop. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you go to an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Setting the seat fore-and-aft position (outer seats in the 2nd row) X Pull lever : in the direction of the arrow to the pressure point and hold it in this position. X Slide the seat forwards or backwards to the desired position. X Release lever : . The seat engages audibly.
would apply force at the abdomen or neck. That could cause serious or even fatal injuries. Do not fold the second-row middle seat and allow occupants to use the folded second-row middle seat as a table while driving.
X Pull release handle : in the direction of the arrow to the pressure point and hold it in this position. The backrest folds forwards. X Slide the seat in the second row of seats forwards to the stop.
Seat unlocked When the seat is unlocked, lock verification indicator : is folded out and indicator area ; is clearly visible. X To lock the seat: fold back the backrest until you hear it engage. Seat locked When the seat is locked, lock verification indicator : is folded in and indicator area ; is barely visible.
Switching the seat heating on/off Switching on/off G Warning! Repeatedly setting the seat heating to level 3 may result in excessive seat temperatures. The health of passengers that have limited temperature sensitivity or a limited ability to react to excessively high temperatures may be affected or they may even suffer burn-like injuries.
X Make sure that the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock. X To switch on: press button : repeatedly until the desired ventilation level is set. i You can open the side windows and the tilt/sliding sunroof with the key ( Y page 89). The seat ventilation of the driver's seat automatically switches to the highest level.
Adjusting the steering wheel electrically : To adjust the steering wheel position (fore-and-aft adjustment) ; To adjust the steering wheel height i Related topics: R EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature ( Y page 110) R storing settings ( Y page 114) Steering wheel heating Switching on/off The steering-wheel heating heats the leather areas of the steering wheel.
To stop steering wheel movement do one of the following: R Move steering wheel adjustment stalk. R Press one of the memory position buttons. R Press memory button M . Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
Exterior mirrors Adjusting the exterior mirrors G Warning Exercise care when using the passenger-side exterior rear view mirror. The mirror surface is convex (outwardly curved surface for a wider field of view). Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.
R the exterior mirrors fold in automatically as soon as you lock the vehicle from the outside. R the exterior mirrors fold out again automatically as soon as you unlock the vehicle and then open the driver's or front- passenger door. i The mirrors do not fold out if they have been folded in manually.
Calling up a stored parking position setting X With the key in position 2 in the ignition lock and the exterior mirror on the front- passenger side activated, engage reverse gear. The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side moves to the stored parking position.
