G WARNING The SRS self-check has detected a malfunction if the 6 SRS indicator lamp: R does not light up at all R does not go out after approximately four seconds after the engine is started R comes on after the engine was started or while driving.
R Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat. R Improper repair work on the SRS creates a risk of rendering the SRS inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment.
R do not lean your head or chest close to the steering wheel or dashboard. R only hold the steering wheel on the outside. Placing hands and arms inside the rim can increase the risk and potential severity of hand/arm injury if the driver front air bag inflates.
Driver's air bag : deploys in front of the steering wheel; front-passenger front air bag ; deploys in front of and above the glove box. They are deployed: R in the event of certain frontal impact.
Side impact air bags G WARNING The pressure sensors for side impact air bag control are located in the doors. Do not modify any components of the doors or door trim panels including, for example, the addition of door speakers.
Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for availability. Pelvis air bag deployment enhances the level of protection of the vehicle occupants on the side of the vehicle on which the impact occurs. Pelvis air bags : deploy next to and below the outer seat cushions.
Occupant Classification System (OCS) How the Occupant Classification System works The Occupant Classification System (OCS) categorizes the occupant on the front- passenger seat by means of a weight sensor. The front-passenger front air bag is deactivated automatically for certain weight categories.
This indicates that the front passenger front air bag is activated. If the 45 indicator lamp is illuminated, the front passenger front air bag is deactivated and will not be deployed.
R If you place a child in a forward-facing child restraint on the front-passenger seat: - move the seat as far back as possible - use the proper child restraint recommended for the age, size and weigh.
G WARNING If the 4 5 indicator lamp does not illuminate, the system is not functioning. You must contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center before seating any child on the front passenger seat. For more information, see "Problems with the Occupant Classification System" ( Y page 51).
Problems with the Occupant Classification System Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The 45 indicator lamp illuminates and remains illuminated. PRE-SAFE ® (preventative occupant protection) G WARNING The PRE-SAFE ® system reduces the impact of an accident on vehicle occupants, as long as their seat belts have been fastened correctly. Although your vehicle is equipped with a PRE- SAFE ® system, the possibility of injury in the event of an accident cannot be ruled out.
provide the intended protection. Do not use any seat or head restraint covers. If the NECK-PRO head restraints have been triggered in an accident, reset the NECK-PRO head restraints on the driver’s and front- passenger seat ( Y page 53). Otherwise, the additional protection will not be available in the event of another rear-end collision.
Failure to wear and properly fasten and position your seat belt greatly increases your risk of injuries and their likely severity in an accident. If you are ever in an accident, your injuries can be considerably more severe without your seat belt properly buckled.
injure internal organs such as your liver or spleen. Adjust the seat belt so that the shoulder section is located as close as possible to the middle of the shoulder. It should not touch the neck. Never pass the shoulder portion of the seat belt under your arm.
Example: Sedan X Adjust the seat and move the backrest to an almost vertical position ( Y page 100). X Pull the seat belt smoothly through belt sash guide : . X Without twisting it, guide the shoulder section of the seat belt across the middle of your shoulder and the lap section across your hips.
X To raise: slide the belt sash guide upwards. The belt sash guide engages in various positions. X To lower: press and hold belt sash guide release : . X Slide the belt sash guide downwards. X Release belt sash guide release : and make sure that the belt sash guide has engaged.
Emergency Tensioning Devices, belt force limiters The front seat belts and the outer seat belts in the rear are equipped with ETDs and seat belt force limiters. The ETDs tighten the seat belts in an accident, pulling them close against the body. The ETDs do not correct incorrect seat positions or incorrectly fastened seat belts.
recommended for the size and weight of the child. The infant or child restraint system must be properly secured in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. All infant or child restraint systems must comply with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 213 and 225 and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 213 and 210.
A child in a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat will be seriously injured or even killed if the front passenger front air bag inflates.
Special seat belt retractor All seat belts except the driver's seat belt are equipped with a special seat belt retractor. When activated, the special seat belt retractor ensures the seat belt will not slacken once the child restraint system has been secured.
X Install the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child restraint system. Comply with the manufacturer's instructions when installing the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child restraint system. Top Tether Important safety notes G WARNING Observe "Important safety notes" ( Y page 58).
Wagon The Top Tether anchorages are attached to the rear of the rear seat backrests. X Move head restraint : upwards. X Remove combined cargo cover and net = ( Y page 280). X Route Top Tether belt B under head restraint : between the two head restraint bars.
children ride in the rear always secure the rear doors with the child-proof locks. You secure each door individually with the child-proof locks on the rear doors. A door secured with a child-proof lock cannot be opened from inside the vehicle. When the vehicle is unlocked, the door can be opened from the outside.

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) Important safety notes i Observe the "Important safety notes" section ( Y page 65). ABS regulates brake pressure in such a way that the wheels do not lock when you brake. This allows you to continue steering the vehicle when braking.
Any unauthorized modification to this device could void the user's authority to operate the equipment. With the help of the radar sensor system, BAS PLUS can detect obstacles that are in the path of your vehicle for an extended period of time. BAS PLUS can also react to stationary obstacles, e.
ESP ® (Electronic Stability Program) Important safety notes i See the "Important safety notes" section ( Y page 65). If ESP ® detects that the vehicle is deviating from the direction desired by the driver, one or more wheels are braked to stabilize the vehicle.
Otherwise, ESP ® cannot stabilize the vehicle if it begins to lurch or when a wheel spins. If you deactivate ESP ® : R ESP ® no longer improves driving stability. R engine torque is not limited and the drive wheels are able to spin. The spinning wheels produce a cutting effect for better traction.
G WARNING Switch off the SPORT handling mode and switch on the ESP ® immediately if the aforementioned circumstances do not apply anymore. Otherwise the SPORT handling mode will only stabilize the vehicle to a limited extent when it is starting to skid or a wheel is spinning.
If you deactivate ESP ® : R ESP ® no longer improves driving stability. R engine torque is no longer limited and the drive wheels are able to spin. The spinning wheels produce a cutting effect for better traction. R traction control is still activated.
PRE-SAFE ® Brake PRE-SAFE ® Brake is only available in vehicles with DISTRONIC PLUS. i Observe the "Important safety notes" section ( Y page 65). PRE-SAFE ® Brake can help you to minimize the risk of a frontal collision with a vehicle ahead or reduce the effects of such a collision.
evasive action or accelerate significantly, the vehicle may perform automatic braking up to the level of emergency braking. Automatic emergency braking is not performed until immediately prior to an accident that can no longer be avoided.
X To activate with the SmartKey: remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. X To activate with KEYLESS-GO: switch the ignition off and open the driver's door. X To deactivate: switch on the ignition. i The immobilizer is always deactivated when you start the engine.

: & Locks the vehicle ; F Unlocks the trunk lid/tailgate = % Unlocks the vehicle When unlocking, the turn signals flash once. When locking, they flash three times. When it is dark, the surround lighting also comes on if it is activated in the on-board computer ( Y page 225).
X To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner surface of the door handle. X To lock the vehicle: touch sensor surface : . X Convenience closing feature: touch recessed sensor surface ; for an extended period ( Y page 93). If you pull on the handle of the trunk lid/ tailgate, only the trunk/cargo compartment of the vehicle is unlocked.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical key, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked automatically. X To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the SmartKey in the ignition lock. Removing the mechanical key X Push release catch : in the direction of the arrow and at the same time, remove mechanical key ; from the SmartKey.

Problems with the SmartKey Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions You cannot lock or unlock the vehicle using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged. X Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of the SmartKey.

Doors Important safety notes G WARNING When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unsupervised in the vehicle, even if they are secured in a child restraint system, and do not give them access to an unlocked vehicle.
X To unlock: press button : . X To lock: press button ; . If all the doors are closed, the vehicle locks. You can open a front door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked.
X Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise to position 1 . The door is unlocked. X Turn the mechanical key back and remove it. X Insert the mechanical key into the SmartKey. Locking the vehicle (mechanical key) If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.

Closing G WARNING Monitor the closing procedure carefully to make sure no one is in danger of being injured. To prevent possible personal injury, always keep hands and fingers away from the trunk opening when closing the trunk lid. Be especially careful when small children are around.
vehicle, it could lead to an accident and/or serious injury. G WARNING Ensure that the trunk lid/tailgate is closed when the engine is running and the vehicle is in motion. Among other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO) may enter the vehicle interior and cause unconsciousness and even death.
X Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid lock as far as the stop. X Turn the mechanical key clockwise from position 1 to position 2 . X Remove the mechanical key. X Insert the mechanical key into the SmartKey. Unlocking the trunk (Sedan) ! The trunk lid swings upwards when opened.
On vehicles with a folding bench seat you can open the tailgate from inside the vehicle using the handle. X Take the mechanical key out of the SmartKey ( Y page 78). To open the tailgate completely, a minimum clearance of 6.36 ft (1.94 m) above the ground is necessary.
Opening and closing the side windows : Front left ; Front right = Rear right ? Rear left The switches for all side windows are located on the driver's door. There is also a switch on each door for the corresponding side window. The switches on the driver's door take precedence.
G WARNING When closing the door windows and the sliding sunroof or panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel, make sure that there is no danger of anyone being harmed by the closing procedure. If potential danger exists, proceed as follows: R Release the & button to stop the closing procedure.
X Pull the corresponding switch on the door control panel until the side window is completely closed. ( Y page 92) X Hold the switch for an additional second. If the side window opens again slightly: X Immediately pull the corresponding switch on the door control panel until the side window is completely closed ( Y page 92).
G WARNING The sliding sunroof is made out of glass. In the event of an accident, the glass may shatter. This may result in an opening in the roof. In a vehicle rollover, occupants not wearing their seat belts or not wearing them properly may be thrown out of the opening.
X Make sure that the sliding sunroof can be fully opened and closed again ( Y page 95). X If this is not the case, repeat the steps above again. ! If the sliding sunroof still cannot be opened or closed fully after resetting, contact a qualified specialist workshop.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Press or pull the 3 switch in the corresponding direction. i If you press the 3 switch beyond the point of resistance, an automatic opening/ closing process is started in the corresponding direction.

Seats Important safety notes G WARNING In order to avoid possible loss of vehicle control, all seat, head restraint, steering wheel and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fastening of seat belts, must be done before setting the vehicle in motion.
Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident. ! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: R keep liquids from spilling on the seats.
X Push or pull the lower edge of the head restraint in the direction of the arrow. Adjusting the head restraint height electrically X To adjust the head restraint height: slide the switch for head restraint adjustment ( Y page 102) up or down in the direction of the arrow.
Adjusting the rear seat head restraint height Example: Sedan X To raise: pull the head restraint up to the desired position. X To lower: press release catch : and push the head restraint down until it is in the desired position. i If you pull the head restraint forward slightly, the effort required to adjust it is reduced.
Dynamic function The dynamic function adjusts the air cushions in the side bolsters of the seat backrests to ensure ideal lateral support at all times.
Make sure that items of luggage and other objects in the cargo compartment are well secured. Otherwise, the load could cause injury in the event of sharp braking, a sudden change in direction or an accident. The folding bench seat in the cargo compartment is only suitable for persons no more than 4.
X To install: push seat cushion ; into seat cushion guides : at a slight angle from the rear = . X Fold seat cushion ; back into its original position ? until it engages. Folding back the folding bench seat X Pull the seat cushion upwards by tab : and fold it back into its original position until it engages.
Driver's and front-passenger seat Rear seats 8 Driver's and front-passenger seat: the system automatically switches down from level 3 to level 2 after approximately eight minutes. Rear seat: the system automatically switches down from level 3 to level 2 after approximately five minutes.
Problems with the seat ventilation The seat ventilation has switched off prematurely or cannot be switched on. The vehicle's electrical system voltage is too low because too many electrical consumers are switched on. X Switch off electrical consumers which you do not need, such as the rear window defroster or interior lighting.
Problems with the steering wheel heating If steering wheel heating indicator lamp = is flashing, the steering wheel heating has switched off automatically. The vehicle's electrical system voltage is too low because too many electrical consumers are switched on.
The crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature is only operational if the EASY-EXIT/ENTRY feature is activated in the on-board computer. Mirrors Rear-view mirror Rear-view mirror (manual anti-glare) X anti-glare mode: flick anti-glare switch : forwards or back.
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Briefly press button : . Both exterior mirrors fold in or out. i Make sure that the exterior mirrors are always folded out fully while driving. They could otherwise vibrate. i If you are driving faster than 9 mph (15 km/h), you can no longer fold in the exterior mirrors.
engage reverse gear. You can store this position. X Make sure that the vehicle is stationary and that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. X Press button ; for the exterior mirror on the front-passenger side. X Engage reverse gear. The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side moves to the preset parking position.

G WARNING If the required tire pressure is not reached after the specified time, the tire is too badly damaged. The tire sealant cannot repair the tire in this instance. Damaged tires and a tire pressure that is too low can significantly impair the vehicle's braking and driving characteristics.
X Have the tire sealant bottle replaced every four years at a qualified specialist workshop. Changing a wheel and mounting the spare wheel Preparing the vehicle When using a different size spare wheel.
Securing the vehicle on level ground (example: Sedan) X On level ground: place chocks or other suitable items under the front and rear of the wheel that is diagonally opposite the wheel you wish to change.
X Using lug wrench : , loosen the bolts on the wheel you wish to change by about one full turn. Do not unscrew the bolts completely. The jacking points are located just behind the wheel housings of the front wheels and just in front of the wheel housings of the rear wheels (arrows).
X Make sure that the base of the jack is positioned directly under the jacking point. X Turn crank A clockwise until jack ? sits completely on jacking point = and the base of the jack lies evenly on the ground. X Turn handle A until the tire is 1.2 in (3 cm) from the ground at most.
X Slide the emergency spare wheel onto the alignment bolt and push it on. X Tighten the wheel bolts until they are finger-tight. X Unscrew the alignment bolt.

Charging the battery G WARNING Never charge a battery still installed in the vehicle unless a battery charger unit approved by Mercedes-Benz is being used.
Jump-starting G WARNING Failure to follow these directions will cause damage to the electronic components, and can lead to a battery explosion and severe injury or death. Never lean over batteries while connecting or jump starting. You might get injured.
Position number B identifies the charged battery of the other vehicle or an equivalent jump- starting device. X Slide cover : of positive terminal ; in the direction of the arrow. X Connect positive terminal ; on your vehicle to positive terminal = of donor battery B using the jumper cable, beginning with your own battery.
Towing and tow-starting Important safety notes G WARNING If you tow the vehicle, you must use a rigid towing bar if: R the engine is not running. R there is a brake system malfunction. R there is a malfunction in the power supply or the vehicle's electrical system.
