Un lock the P rotect ion Switch es The scan ner has t wo pr otecti on swi tches: o ne located at th e inner side of the transparenc y unit (figure 1-2) and the other at the bottom of the scanner itself (f igur e 1-3) . To Unlock the transparency unit protection switch, turn the knob to the unlocked posi tion with a co i n.
Instal l the Tr ans pare ncy Unit If the transpare ncy unit has bee n removed, locate the installation holes at the ba ck of the scanner. Lif t the tra nsparency unit and insert the metal poles on the transparenc y unit into the h oles (figure 1 -4).

Driver & Appli cat ion I nsta llation To i nstal l the Diamo nd View scanner dr iv er s: 1. After you power on your c omputer and Windows sta rts, the "New hardware found" message box will appe ar on the sc reen, then the "Update Devi ce Dri ver Wizard" dialogue box will pop up .

With its i c on based user- int erface and logi cal tas k-f low des ign, y ou can comp lete a sat isfact ory scann ing job with on ly a few m ouse c licks.

Set tings Sub- menu You can adj ust several ge neral sca n s ettings in this submenu. Scan Siz e… Whe n you choose t his ite m, t he foll owing d ialog box wi ll appe ar: In this dialog box, you can set the sizes of the areas to be sc anned.
Monitor Gamma In general, a monitor cannot display the full col our range of an imag e. In order to have the monitor a ppro xim ate the Co lours as cl o sely as poss ible, you usua lly need to adjust the monitor gamma . Adjustment of the monitor gamm a can make the monitor approximate the Col ours of the original ima ge more closely.
Film Typ e Whe n choosing this i tem , the follo wing dia log b ox will ap pear: When you want to scan a negative film, c h o o s e y o u r t y p e o f f i l m h e r e i n a d v a n c e . T h e scanning result wi l l be optimised f or the film type you select.
Combo Boxe s Combo Boxes provide severa l options to adjust the scan se ttings before you scan an image. In order to ach ieve t he best scan result yo u may need to adjust the settings a ccording to the inten ded pur pose of th e scanned image an d the type of original you wish to scan.
Imag e T ype Bo x The Image Type box is used to se lec t a p art icula r da ta type for your sca nning. For best results, y ou w ill nee d to select the ima ge type that matches the original. For example , if you are scanning a text document, choose Line Art instead of Colo ur to maximise sca nning qualit y and minim ise fi le size.
Scan M ode Bo x The Scan M ode bo x pro vides three scan modes: High Speed and High Q uali ty 24 bi t modes and High Quality 48 bit colour enha ncement mode. T he mor e bits used to repr oduce th e image col our , the mor e accura tely the scanne r represents the colours of the original.
The best way to select the sc an resolution is to matc h it to the purpose of your scan j ob. This is beca use the higher re solution you use for sca nning, the large r the scanne d image file size will bec ome.
Sca ling Box The scaling c ombo box all ows you t o spe cify th e hor izon t al and v erti cal s c ale of the i mage to be scan ned. Not e that the max imum and mi nimum s caling i s determined by the resolutio n. The scaling uni t is a percentage (%).
From this dia log bo x, you can ad just the sharpness a ccurately. Dragging the scroll bar to the left will b lur the imag e, a nd dragging the scrol l bar to right will sharpen the i mage. You can also di rectl y enter the desired valu e into the Amount ent ry box to change the sha rpness.
Descre en Bo x If you are scanning ima ges from maga zines, newspapers o r other pri nted materials, you may find that t he scan ned imag e appears t o be co vere d by ti ny screen pattern s. To elimi nate thi s screen pattern , you can use the options in the D escreen box.
Col o ur Wizard Box The Co lour Wizard box offe rs tw o quick and convenie nt to ols f or y ou t o adj ust t he ove ra ll qua lity of t he scanned i mage: Auto Densi ty Selec t Auto De ns ity to optimise the density of the ima ge automatically.
Color Matchi ng The Color M atching function a llows you to mainta in the consistency of Col our reproduction between the sc anner and other output devices. Note: 1. This f unction item only appears when you choose “ Refle ctive” in th e Original box.
Job Li s t and Command Buttons The Job L ist and Command Buttons ar e used to control the scan job flow while you sc an ima ges. Job Lis t The Job List pr ovides informati on on all scan j obs in process. The file size is also displaye d in the list .
When y ou hav e created mu l tipl e scan jo bs (see bel ow f or how to creat e a n ew scan job) in the list, you can che ck or uncheck the box in front of the job name to decide whether to proceed scanning that spec ific job(s). By sele cting each sc an job in the list, you can ad just different scanning se ttings for eac h scan job respe ctively.
Previ ew Area The Preview Are a is use d to previe w image in rough quality. You c an use the c ursor to p oint to a pixel to read its va lue. You ca n also set the scann ing ar ea and v iew an inst ant previ ew of the ef fects caus ed by param eter chang es from the Image f uncti ons.

Level Bu tto n By clic king on the Level button, the Level d ialog box w ill app ear. The Lev el dialo g box incl udes several useful tools for you to che ck the Colour le vel in format ion of the imag e and adju st th e imag e quality . In addi tio n, if we tak e a look at the t wo imag es belo w: We can se e that in Imag e 1, there i s a high er con trast between t he brigh ter and darker part of the image.
Now that we can unde rstand th e informati on in t he h istogra m, the next step will b e to adjust the ima ge with histogram tools. B elow the Hist ogra m, there ar e th ree tiny triangles: By dragging these triangle s, you can adjust the brightness and contrast of an image preci sely .
Input Le vel bo x The Input Lev el box di splays the val ue of Shad ow Thresh old , Midton e and H igh light T hresh old respe ctively. You can also inpu t eac h value he re directly . Output Le vel box The Output Leve l box is used t o expan d the ou tput level of the image C olour .
Curve Bu t t o n The Cur ve tool is use d to adj ust th e brig htnes s prope rties of midt one pixels in a n imag e. O nce you c lick on t he Curve bu tton, the following dialog box will a ppea r: An intro ducti on to each component in t he dialog box and a description of how to use the Curve tool to adj ust an image follows.
You can also click the curve to add new poi nts and further change the shape of the curv e: Input/Outp ut S tatus Are a You can read the pr ecise in put/o utput v alue her e. When you have finis hed with adj ustments, you can click OK t o a p p l y , o r c l i c k Reset to restore the default settings.
Col o ur Balan ce Butt o n Click th e Colour Bala nce butto n to open the Colour Balance dia log box: In thi s dialog box, you can change the mixt ure o f colo urs o f an imag e and emphasise or diminish certain col ours. A description of Col our Balance compo nents f ollows.
Colour A d jus tme nt button Click th e Colour Adjustment button, and th e Colour Adjustment dialog box will a ppea r: Col our Adjust ment is anothe r convenient tool that y ou can use to adj ust and calib rate the Colours in an imag e.
When you have finis hed with adj ustments, click the OK button to confirm you r settings and close the dialog box. If you are not satis fied with the adjustme nts, you can cli ck th e Reset button and the settings will return t o th e de fa ult. A lterna tive ly, you can click the Cancel button to cancel and clo s e the dialog box .
Thre s hold butt o n Thresh old function is very useful when y ou scan line a rt images or scan do cuments for OCR (o ptical character recogn iti on) use. You may use this func tion to ad just the quality of line art ima ges or elimina te unwanted dots in the document to impr ove the accurac y of recogn ition.
Ima ge 1 is the original sca nned im age, while in Im age 2 the thre shold value is chan ged into 5 6. This me ans that pixe ls in the image with brightness level below 56 will all b e c ut into b lac k, and those w ith b rightne ss leve l a bove 5 6 a re all t urned int o white.
Rotate button You can rotate the se lection area ea sily with thi s button. For example, if the orig ina l sca n is not a l igne d c orrectly, y ou ca n use th is function to corr ect the ti lt. After you preview t he photo, adju st the s electio n area to approx imatel y encompass the photo.
A uto bu tto n After you preview an imag e, you can press this button t o o pen the Auto dialogue bo x: Auto Crop Click this butt on and the Diamond View driv er will crop the scan ar ea autom atica lly an d selec t only the necessa ry size for scanning the ima ge.
Stat us Ar ea The Stat us Area prov ides i nfor matio n of the i mage yo u are working on: Pix el D isp lay Box This box d isplays the col our of t he p ixel that the mo use cursor is cur rently pointing to.
4. PHOTO E XPR ESS In this c hapte r you will be introd uced to the fanta stic world o f Ph oto Express. Lea rn more about this bundled software and make yo ur scanned photographs and other imag es mo.
Getting Started To run Ph oto E xpre ss, d ouble c lick the Phot o Exp ress icon on your W indo ws desktop or open from Windows Start Menu. When you run Ph oto Express, ma ke sur e t hat the Win dow s disp lay is set for a reso lu tion of 800 x 600 o r 1 024 x 7 68 pixels and using H i Colour (15/16 bit) o r True Colour (24 bit) mode.
Mode T ab: The Mo de tabs switch P hoto Exp re ss between Pho to mo de and Pro ject mode. Pho to mo de is wh ere the majo rity of your wo rk is don e, while th e Project mo de lets y ou mak e greeting cards, name c ards, and other fun thi ngs based on templates.
Getting Images The first thing you want to d o w hen y ou start Photo Express is to get the photos you want to work with into the a ctual program. The place you start is with Album.
To add new image s t o an al bum: 1. Sel ect an alb u m. 2. Click the File i con an d brow se for t he folder wher e the images ar e sto red. 3. When they appear in the Options panel, click the Select All butto n (or select imag es individu ally b y holding down the Ctrl ke y as you c lick t hem).
Work i ng with Images Adjust i ng I mages Aft er yo u hav e acquir ed an imag e fro m a scann er or digi tal camera, i t may need some adjustments. Photo Express provides you with the perfect to ol for adjusting your ph otos: the T ra nsform t ool. To re -al ign a phot o: 1.

Shari ng I mag e s Printing Ima ges Once you have put the fi nishing touches o nto your photos, it is time to pr int them out. Photo Express contains nume rous print ing options, letting you output posters and name cards in addition to its regular printing duties.

Expres s Yourse lf Creat e Cal end ar s One of the easi est task s to accompli sh in Photo Expres s is mak ing cal endars , either for y our Windows desk top or for your real desktop. They are gr eat gift for your friends and lo ved ones, in addition to bein g a convenient way t o keep trac k of important dates in sty le.
Morphin g Ph otos One of Photo Express ’ more novel effect s extr as is that of image mor phin g. Morphing transforms an imag e over time to create interesting and unique “warps” of th e o riginal photo. Image morp hs are o utput as either image sequ ences or anim ated GIF files.
Working in Pr oject Mode The Pr oject mode gi ves y ou a focu sed envi ron ment in whi ch to create cu stom greet ing cards, calend ars, invita tions, birthday a nd anniversa ry cards, name c ards, and planne rs. The Project m ode is useful for getting through a “project” as quickly and eff icient ly as possi ble.
Worki ng w ith T emplates Photo Expr ess’ uniqu e templates can be edi ted and cu stomi sed to suit your ow n need s. Templates consist of multiple compone nts, usua lly a c ombination o f text and pho tos w ith a decor atio n o r two p erhaps throw n in.
A dding De cora tion One cate gory o f tools on the Edit menu in Pr oject mode is unique to that tab: Decor ation . Thes e are speci al, o bject-b ased eff ects such as Frames, Edges and Props you can use to enhance photo objects in a project. To add spe ci al e dge e ffec ts to a phot o obj ec t: 1.

Tips fo r Improvi ng Reco gnition Quali t y If you have a text docume nt with many unrecognise d characte rs, the rea son may be tha t the source image is of a poor qua lity. You should set the correct bright ness, and resolution and use the Diam ond View scanne r’s Thre shold function the n resca n the image.
7. SCAN BUTTON The Scan Button is a convenient tool for sc anning and import ing image s direct ly into applic ation s oftware that you use most freque ntly. With Scan B utton, you no longer have to ope n the applica tion sof t ware first and dash thro ugh menu and submen us to acquire and impo rt im ages.
Hel p: choose this item to read the on-line inst ruction f or Scan B utton. About Scan Bu tton…: choose this ite m to displa y the vers ion number a nd other related information about Sca n Button. Settin gs…: enter the Se tting wi ndow and change Sca n Button settings.
Quick S ca n Here you can spe cify the action of Scan Button w hen you double-clic k the ic on on Windo ws Taskbar . For ex ample, if yo u choos e Scan to Pr inter , the next time you double-click the Scan Button tray icon, Sca n Button will be ac tivated and start to scan and print the scanned image to the printer y ou designated.

2 The Auto Crop f unction some times f ails. Diamond View performs the Auto Crop function by first estimating the outline of the imag e. If the outline of the image is unclea r or can not b e easily re cognise d, the driver will not be ab le to dec ide the correct sha pe to c rop.
