Getting Started Connecting the Hardware This section describes how to connect NPort 5 400 to serial devices for fi rst time t esting purposes. We cover Wiring Requirements , Connecting the Power , Gr ounding N Port 540 0 , Connecting to the Network , and Connecti ng to a Serial Device .
Grounding NPort 5400 Grounding and wire rou ting helps lim it the effects of noise due to el ectromagnetic interference (EMI). Run the groun d connection fr om the ground screw to the grou nding surfac e prior to conn ecting devices. This product is intended t o be mount ed to a well-gro unded m ounting surface suc h as a metal panel.
3 3 Chapter 3 Initial IP Address Configuration When setting up your NPort 5410/5430/5340I for the first time, the first th ing you should do is configuring the IP addr ess. This chapter introduc es th e method to config ure NPort’ s IP addr ess. Select one of the initial IP Address configuration methods to configure NPort’s IP Address.
Initializing NPort’s IP Address 1. Determine whether you r NPort needs to use a Stati c IP or Dynam ic IP (either DHC P or BOOTP application). 2. If NPort is used in a Static IP environment, you can use LCM Di splay, NPort Administrat ion Suite, ARP, Web Console, or Telnet Co nsole to config ure the new IP address.
Initial IP Address Configuration There are fou r push butto ns on NPort’ s nameplate. G oing from left to right , the buttons are: Button Name Action MENU menu activates the main menu, or returns to.
As you use the bu ttons to operate the LCM disp lay, you will notice that with very few exceptions, mo ving up one level causes the botto m line of the display to move to th e top line of the display. You will also no tice that the botto m three options in level 2, and all of the options in level 3 h ave either a C or D attached.
Initial IP Address Configuration The part of the LCM operation that still req uires some explanation is how to edit the configurable options. In fact, you will only en counter two types of configura ble options. The first type involves ente ring numbers, such as IP addresses, Netm asks, etc.
NPort Administration Suite NPort Administration Suite consists of some useful utility programs that are used to config ure and manage your NPorts. See Chapter 5 for de tails on how to install NPort Ad ministration Suite, and h ow to use this suite of useful utilities to set up IP a ddresses and configure your NPort.
Initial IP Address Configuration Telnet Console Depending on how y our compute r and netw ork are confi gured, you m ay find i t convenie nt to use network access to set up your NPort’s IP a ddress. This can be done using the Telnet program. 1. From the Win dows desktop , click on Start and then se lect Run .
6. Use the Backspace key to erase the current IP address, type in the ne w IP address, a nd then press Ente r . 7. Press any key to c ontinue… 8. Type m a nd then press Enter to return to the main menu.

4 4 Chapter 4 Choosing the Proper Operation Mode In this section, we describe th e various NP ort operation m odes. The o ptions include a n operation mode that uses a driver install ed on the host computer, an d operation m odes that rely on TCP/IP socket programmin g concepts.
Overview NPort De vice Servers net work-enabl e traditional R S-232/422/ 485 devices , in which a De vice Server is a tiny computer equipped with a CP U, real-tim e OS, and TCP/IP protocols that ca n bi-directio nally translate data between the serial and Ethernet formats.
Choosing the Proper Operation Mode TCP Client Mode In TCP Client mode , NPort can actively establish a TCP connection to a pre-defined host com puter when serial data arrives. After the data has b een transferred, NPort can automatically disconn ect from the host computer by using the TCP alive check time or Inac tivity time settings.
The driver used for Real COM Mode comes with the NPort Windows Administrator which will install automatically on your co mputer when you install NPort Administration Suite.
5 5 Chapter 5 Web Console Configuration The Web Console is the most user- friendly way to configur e NPort 5410/5430/534 0I. This chapter will introduce the Web Console function groups and fu nction definitions. This chapter uses NPort 5230 as an example.
Opening Your Browser 1. Open your browser wi th the cookie function enabl ed. (To e nable your br owser for coo kies, right click on your desktop Inter net Explorer icon, select Properties, click on th e Security tab, and then select the three Enable options as sho wn in the figure below.
Web Console Configuration 4. The NPort 5410/5430/5340I homepage will open. On this page, you can see a brief descriptio n of the Web Consol e’s nine func tion groups . If you can’t remember the pa ssword, the ONLY way to start configuring NPort is to load factory defaults by using the Reset button lo cated near the NPort’s RJ45 Ethernet port.

Web Console Configuration Serial Parameters Check the serial communication parameters in your Se rial Device’s user’s manual. You should set up NPort’s serial para meters with the same communi cation parameters used by your serial d evices.

At least, the Inactivity time should b e set larger than that of Force Transmit timeout. To prevent the unintended loss of data due to the session disco nnected, it is highly recommend ed that this value is set large enough so that the in tended data transfer is completed.

Accessible IP Settings NPort has an IP address based filtering method to control access to the NPort. Accessible IP Settings allows y ou to add or remove “Legal” remote host IP addresses to preve nt unauthorized a ccess. Access to NP orts is cont rolled by IP address.
Web Console Configuration Auto Warning Settings Event Type Cold start This refers to st arting the system from powe r off (contrast t his with warm start). When perform ing a cold start, NPort will automatically issue an Auto warning message by e-mail, or send an SNMP trap after rebooting.
DSR changed The DSR (Data Set Ready) signal has changed, also indicat ing that the data comm unication equipment’s powe r is off. For example, a DSR cha n ge to high also means that the DCE is powered ON. If the DSR signal changes to low, it also means that the DCE is powered off.

Change Password Input the “Old password” and “N ew password” to chan ge the pa ssword. Leave the p assword boxes blank to erase the password. In this case, the NPort will no t have password protection. If you forget the password , the ONLY way to config ure NPort is by us ing the Reset button on NPort’s casing to “Load Factory Default.
Web Console Configuration Load Factory Default This function will reset all of NPort’s settings to th e factory default values. Be aware th at previous settings will be lost.

6 6 Chapter 6 Configuring Windows Administrator This chapter uses NPort 5230 as an example to introduce the installatio n and configuration of NPort Administration Suite.
Overview We understa nd the im portance of s oftware as t he founda tion of your application, and with this in mind, we designed NPort Administrator to let you easily install a nd configure your NPort 5000 Series product over t he network.
Configuring Windows Administrator 4. Clic k on Next to install the program using the default prog ram nam e, or select a dif ferent name. 5. Clic k on Install to proceed with the i nstallation. 6. The Installing window repor ts the progre ss of the installation.
8. Clic k on Finish to complete the installation of NPort Adm inistrati on Suite. Configuration The Admi nistrator-Confi guration window is di vided into four part s. The top part is the function list and onlin e help area. (Windows NT does not support this .
Configuring Windows Administrator Broadcast Search The Broadcast Search function is used to locate all NPorts that are connected to the same LAN as your computer.
Unlock Password Protection If the NPort is password protected, then you will not be able to use the right click or do uble click m ethod to open the c onfiguration page. Instead, select an NPort with “Lock” status, right click the lock ed NPort, and then select the unlock button.
Configuring Windows Administrator Blank The NPort is not password pro tected, and “B roadcast Search” was use d to locate it. Fixed The NPort is not password prot ected, and “Search by IP address” was use d to locate it.
Upgrade Firmware Input the password to Unlo ck the NPort, and then right click on a specific NPor t and select the Upgrade Firmware function t o start upgrading th e firmware. Select the correct ROM file to be downloaded to the NPort. Visit Moxa’s website at www.
Configuring Windows Administrator Export/Import Right click on a specifi c NPort and select the Export function to start Exporting th e configuration file. The Export Conf iguration function is a handy tool that can be used t o produce a te xt file containing the curren t configuration of a particular NPort.
Monitor There are tw o methods avai lable to start the Monitor function. 1. First use Broadcas t Search unde r the Conf iguration F unction gro up, and t hen click on Monitor Add Targ et Select ta rget from the list. 2. First cli ck on Mo nitor , and then Add T arget Rescan .
Configuring Windows Administrator Select Monitor Items. Select a Refresh Rate (the default is 3 seconds). Select Display warning message or Play the warning music in WAV format when a new event o ccurs. New event means one of the NPorts in the monitor is “Alive” or “Not Alive,” or has lost connection with the Monitor program.
When one of the NPorts loses connection with the Monitor program, a warning alert will display automatically. Th e warning music will be played at the same time. In the Monitor screen, you can see the “Not Alive” NPort is marked with red co lor. Click the Alive column.
Configuring Windows Administrator Port Monitor The process is the same as in the previous “Monito r” section. The only difference is that you can select more item s under Port Monitor tha n under p ort status.
COM Mapping Windows Administration Suite comes with the Wi ndows 95/98 /ME/NT/2000/XP Real COM driv ers. After you install Windows Administration Suite, th ere ar e two ways to set up the NPort’s serial por t as your host’s re mote COM port . The first way is On-line COM Mapping .
Configuring Windows Administrator Select COM Setting to m odify COM No., default setting, etc. Select the COM No. Those “In use, ” “Assigned” C OM ports will also be indica ted in this di alog window. If you select multiple serial ports or multiple NPorts, remember to check the “Auto Enum erating” function to use the COM No.
Fast Flush (only flush loc al buffer) 1. We have adde d one optio nal “Fast Flush” f unction in ou r new NPort R eal COM dri ver. NP ort Administrator Suite for 2G NPort adds it after version 1.2 . 2. For some applications, the user’s program will use the Win32 “PurgeComm()” fu nction before it reads or writes data.
Configuring Windows Administrator Select Discard Ch ange to tell Administrator to NOT save the COM Mapping information to the host. To save the configuration to a text file, select Export COM Mapping . You will then be able to import this configur ation file to another host and use the same COM Mapping settings in th e other host.

When you set up the NPort to use DHCP Client to configure Ethernet IP a ddresses, it will automatically send a DHCP request over the Ethernet to find the DHCP Server.
