6 Chapter 1. Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Asanté IntraCore 3500 S eries Gigabit sw itch. The IntraCore 3500 seri es include 24- and 48-port 10/100 managed sw itches with a vari ety of hardw are and software optio ns. The IntraCore 3524 is a 2 4-port 10/1 00 managed switch with sev eral opt ional hardw are modules.
7 1.2 LEDs The system ’s LED di splay all ow s you to monitor the status of your switch. R efer t o the secti ons below for LED informat ion spe cific to y our sw itch’s mode l.

11 1.4.1 Console Interface Users can access t he sw itch in a more tr aditional way by connec ting a PC or terminal to the console port or by telnet acr oss the network. 14 2.2.1 Equipment Rack Guidelines Use the follow ing guidelines to ensure th at the sw itch w ill fit safely within t he equipme nt rack: • Size: 17.25 x 10.0 x 1.8 inches (423 x 245 x 39 mm) • Ventilation: En sure that the rack i s install ed in a r oom w here the temperatur e remai ns below 40° C (104° F).

19 2.9 IP A ssignment To change the IP address of t he switch from the def ault set ting: 1. Access the Sy stem IP Configu ration me nu by typi ng i in the Configur ation menu. 2. Type the co mmand l etter of t he opt ion you want t o change. 3. Type the new address at the p rompt.
20 2.11 Using the St acking Feature (IC35 24 only ) The IC3524 f irmware v. 1.1 (or later) offers a stacking f eature that allow s the user to sta c k up to e ight units, all shar ing one IP address of the master sw itch (uni t #1). T his is an effi cient and cost-effective w ay to add ports as need ed.

31 3.8 A dvanced Port Configuration The Advanced P ort Configuration M enu allows you to control the p ort broad cast and m ulticast ra te, to enable or di sable 80 2.3x flow control, and to set th e defaul t priority o f the port . To access the Advanced Port C onfiguration M enu, type v in the Port Co nfiguration M enu.

43 3.19 Vie wing Statistic s Viewing sta tistics o n a regular basis allows you to evaluate y our network’s perfor mance. You can v iew current st atistics f or the sw itch on a per-p ort basis and can change your view of those stat istics and the counters di splayed in it.

73 Chapter 7. Switching Concepts A bridge is a hardware dev ice used to conn ect multi p le netw orks int o one big ne twork. Ho wever, when a bridge receiv es a broad cast from one interf ace, it will forw ard the frame to all interfaces and flood th e wire, easily ov erwhelmin g the netw ork.
74 7.1.3 Port VLAN ID To allow untagged pac kets to parti cipate i n a VLAN, a Por t VLAN ID (PVID) must b e assign ed in the relevant port(s). Each port on th e switch has a default PVID o f 1 (the defau lt VLAN) and w ill receive bot h tagged and untagged fr ames.
75 Forward Delay After a reca lculation of the spa nning tree , the Forw ard Delay param eter regu lates the de lay before each p ort begins trans mitting traffic. If a port be gins forw arding traffic too s oon (befor e a new root bridge has been selected), th e netw ork can be adversely a ffected.
76 7.3.2 Flow Control With a link o perating at a high data rate, a switch may ex perience occasion al limitat ions in the buffer space used to store Ethernet frames before forw arding them. In this situ ation, if the sendi ng stat ion contin ues to send frames, the sw itch will have no option but to dis card the frame s.
