28 Overview When WMM is used, all voice traffic originating from the wireless handset is assigned the WMM V oice Access Categor y , making it the highest prior ity application. If the wireless network suppor ts WMM, the handsets enable WMM suppor t automatically; otherwise, SpectraLink V oice Pr ioritization (SVP) is used.
WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 29 Interf ace (OAI) messaging protocol. The WLAN Application Gatew ay 2246 f orwards the messages to the WLAN IP T elephony Manager , which encapsulates the message f or delivery to the handset. If text-messaging functions are programmed, the handset can receive te xt messages.

Challenges of integrating v oice applications 35 P ower adjustments and variab le capacity A WLAN has dynamic mechanisms in place f or adjusting channels, adjusting power , and filling cov erage holes, all in response to changes in the Radio F requency (RF) environment.
36 Planning F or e xample, if a data device does seiz e the medium, it can send a 1500-byte fr ame at the lowest data rate (if it is f ar awa y from the AP), and fur ther delay v oice frames. In addition, sev eral data de vices contending for the medium can each, in tur n, send large frames bef ore the voice de vice gained access to the medium.

TFTP Server planning 39 Only one TFTP ser ver is needed in the network, and it need not be colocated with the handsets or the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245. There is a client-dependent aspect to how the handsets function with the TFTP ser ver . Ho w well a ser ver works with the handsets can var y between code versions on the handset.
40 Planning Nor tel has tested the f ollowing TFTP ser v ers. The y are listed in order of pref erence. • Nor tel TFTP ser ver (ONMS application) • 3COM TFTP • PumpkinTFTP Syslog Server planning.
Access point planning 41 A site sur v ey is critical to designing and implementing a wireless LAN. The site sur ve y is used to deter mine the number of APs needed to suppor t the wireless handset users and to determine the best placement of the APs. Diff erent AP vendors pro vide diff erent tools to do this.
42 Planning the Site Sur ve y mode displa ys signals only from APs on the same Extended Ser vice Set ID (ESSID), check f or signals from APs using all ESSIDs to av oid channel overlap . Currently , Nor tel recommends the use of the Ekahau Site Sur vey tool to verify the network deplo yment, although other site sur ve y tools are acceptable .
Network management 49 Both location-solution types use a f or m of triangulation to compute the location of the device . Depending on the pow er le vel of the AP , it can sometimes hear devices that it cannot transmit to .
50 Planning noticeable when a v oice call trav erses such a link. Vivinet Assessor is e xtremely useful for identifying the symptoms of issues and fixing such problem areas in the network long before the customer places the first call.

Network management 53 Call trac king is another feature that is not specifically related to QoS monitoring or f ault monitoring, but that is impor tant to solution manageability .
54 Planning The aler t from Vivinet AppManager activates Vivinet Diagnostics , which traces the path of the call, collects diagnostic inf or mation, and can perform root cause analysis. Y ou can sav e the results for fur ther analysis and action. F or an e xample, see Figure 8 "NetiQ Vivinet Diagnostics example" (page 54) .
Other network design considerations 55 Other network design considerations WLAN Handsets 2210/2211/2212 are 802.11b-only de vices and the WLAN Handsets 6120/6140 are 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11a devices , which creates challenging choices for network deplo yments.
56 Planning channels, which is detr imental to voice de vices. As a general policy , f or large amounts of data, use 802.11a f or data and 802.11b for v oice, b ut leav e 802.11g disabled. Alternately , if there are fe w 802.11b/g data de vices and the WLAN is to be used primar ily for v oice, consider enabling 802.
Other network design considerations 57 Example The channel reuse factor f or 802.11b networks is fix ed at three (three nonov er lapping channels in the 2.4 GHz range), corresponding to channels 1, 6, and 11. The transmit po wer is fix ed at 50 mW , which estab lishes the radius of the cell.
58 Planning Lay er 3 implementation Where possible, simplify the number of subnets that are used f or client de vices. Even in a Distributed Campus architecture , you can ha ve a f e w central subnets f or clients. As a general rule, Nor tel recommends that wired or wireless IP phones be placed in a separate VLAN (subnet) from data de vices.
WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 planning 59 industr y . So to mitigate risks, you can use a firewall to bloc k all but the por ts needed for IP T elephon y .
60 Planning In any subnet where wireless handsets are used, each subnet must ha ve one or more WLAN IP T elephony Managers 2245. A WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 group on a subnet consists of one or more WLAN IP T elephon y Managers 2245 and their associated wireless handsets.

64 Planning T o gain this type of predictability , engineer the maximum calls per AP based on 1 Mb/2 Mb rate selections in the handsets, configure that number as the call limit on the WLAN IP T elephon y Manager 2245, and then configure the actual rate of the handsets (on the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245) to A utomatic.
Placement guidelines for the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 65 returns. If the wireless handset is configured to use ESSID of the ne w WLAN, it automatically discov ers the ESSID of the APs operating in broadcast mode.
