Maintenance OPERATION GUIDE 3-3 T oner Cont ainer Replacement Frequency of toner cont ainer replacement The life of the toner contai ners depend s on the amount o f toner required to accomplish your printing jobs.
Maintenance 3-4 OPERATION GUIDE • When the printer becomes low on toner , for example in the cyan container , the printer displays th e message Toner low C , M , Y , K as the first cau tion. Note t he replaceme nt is not alwa ys necessar y at this stage.
Maintenance OPERATION GUIDE 3-5 2 Pull the blue lock lever on the toner container forward towards the unlocked symbol. 3 Carefully remove the old toner co ntainer from the printer. 4 Put the old toner container in the plastic ba g (contained in the toner kit) and discard it later accord ing to the local code or regulations for waste disposal.
Maintenance 3-6 OPERATION GUIDE 6 Shake the new toner container 5 or 6 times as shown in the figure in order to distribute the toner evenly inside th e container. 7 Set the new toner container in the printer as shown in the figure below. 8 Push down on the top of the toner container to in stall it firml y in place.
Maintenance OPERATION GUIDE 3-7 9 Pull the blue lock lever on the toner container back towards the locked symbol as far as it will go. 10 Use the same procedure to re place the other color toner containers. 11 Close the top cover. Proceed to the next section.
Maintenance 3-8 OPERATION GUIDE Cleaning the Printer The following parts must be cleaned each time the toner con tainer and waste toner box are repla ce d: • Main charger wire • Main charger grid .
Maintenance OPERATION GUIDE 3-9 1 Open the left cover. 2 First clean the main charger wire. Grasp the gr een wire cleaner knob. Gently pull the wire cleaner knob ou t and push it back in. Repeat this 2 to 3 times. After cleaning, make sure yo u restore the wire cleaner knob to its home posit ion.

Maintenance OPERATION GUIDE 3-11 6 Gently pull the main charger han dle out and p ush it back in. Repeat this 2 to 3 times. These movements clean the grid.
Maintenance 3-12 OPERATION GUIDE 1 Grasp the tab of the green len s cleaner kno b. Gently pull the lens cleaner knob out and push it back in. Repeat this 2 times. 2 Push the lens cleaner knob back in comple tely. After cleanin g, make sure you restore the lens cleaner knob to its home position .
Maintenance OPERATION GUIDE 3-13 3 Once you are finished cleanin g all 4 len ses, close the left cover. Cleaning the Paper T ransfer Unit Print problems such as soiling of the reverse side of printed pages may occur if the pap er transfer unit becom e s dirty.
Maintenance 3-14 OPERATION GUIDE 2 Wipe away the paper dust on the reg istration roller and the paper ram p using the wiper cloth included in the tone r kit. NOTE: Be careful not to touch the black tran sfer roller duri ng cleaning as this may adversely affect print quality .
Maintenance OPERATION GUIDE 3-15 Replacing the W aste T oner Box Replace the waste toner box wh en the Check waste toner box message is displayed. A new waste to ner box is included with the toner kit. The printer will not oper ate without replacing the waste toner box.
Maintenance 3-16 OPERATION GUIDE 3 Close the cap to the old w aste tone r box after removing the box from the printer. 4 To prevent toner from spillin g, put the old waste tone r box in the plastic bag (contained in the tone r kit) and discard it later according to the local code or regulations for waste disposal.

Troubleshooting 4-2 OPERATION GUIDE General Guidelines The table below provides basic soluti ons fo r problems yo u may encounter with the printer. We suggest you consult this table to troubleshoo t the problems before calling for service. Ti ps Printer problems may be solved easily by following the tips below.
Troubleshooting OPERATION GUIDE 4-3 Print Quality Problems The tables and diagrams in th e following sections define print quality problems and the co rrective action y ou ca n conduct to solve the problems. Some solutions may requ ire cleaning or replacing parts of the printer.

If the Toner low (C/M/Y/K) message is displayed with color description, install a ne w toner kit for the color . T o replace the toner cont ainer , see T oner Co ntainer Replacement on page 3-3 .

Troubleshooting OPERATION GUIDE 4-7 Error Messages The following table lists errors and ma intenan ce messages that you can be dealt with by yourself. If Call service appears, turn off the printer, disconnect the power co rd, and contact your service technician.

Close the printer top cover . Duplex disa bled Press GO Y ou attempted to print with a pa per size and paper type that cannot be used for duplex printing.
Troubleshooting OPERATION GUIDE 4-9 Install MK Replace Maintenance Kit which is displayed on the message display . Repla cement of the maintenance kit is necessary at every 200,000 ima ges of printing and requires professional servicing . Contact your service technician.

Print out accumulated jobs in the virtual mailboxes. Warning low memory The printer’s internal memory is r unning low due to too many number s of font s and macros downloaded.

Troubleshooting OPERATION GUIDE 4-13 Clearing Paper Jams If the paper jammed in the paper transport system, or n o paper sheets were fed at all, the Paper jam message appears and the location of the paper jam (the compone nt where the paper jam has occurred) is also indicated.
Troubleshooting 4-14 OPERATION GUIDE General considerations for clearing jams Bear in mind the following conside rations when attempting jam removal: CAUTION: When pulling the paper, pull it gently so as not to tear it. Torn pieces of paper are difficult to re move a nd may be easily overlooked, deterring t he jam recove ry.

Remove the jammed paper using the pr ocedure given below. 1 Pull out the paper cassett e and rem ove the jamme d paper. 2 While pulling the green paper transfer unit release lever, pull out the paper transfer u nit.
Troubleshooting 4-16 OPERATION GUIDE 3 If paper is jam med as show n in A , remove the paper by pulling the center up. If paper is jammed as shown in B , remove the pape r by pulling the edge. 4 Open the rear cover and then the fuser cover , and remove the jammed paper.
Troubleshooting OPERATION GUIDE 4-17 CAUTION: The fu ser unit inside the printer is hot. Do not touch it with your hands as it may result in burn inju ry. Remove jammed paper carefully. 5 Push the pap er transfer unit back in and close the fuser cover and rear cover.
