23 Tips before you start taking pictures 2 Holding the camera Sometimes when you look a t a picture you have taken, the contours of the subject are blurred. This is often caused by movement of the camera at the precise moment that the shutt er button is pressed.

29 Tips before you start taking pictures 2 Recording pictures Pictures taken are stored in the internal memory. You can also use an optional xD-Picture Card (referred to as “card” in this manual) to store pictures. Th e card has greater c apacity than t he internal memory, and so is abl e to store more pictures.

38 3 Basic shooting functions Zooming in on a distant subject You can zoom in on your subject usi ng the optical zoom and digit al zoom. With the optical zoom, the image is enlarged on the CCD when the lens magnification is changed, and th e image is formed by a ll the CCD pixels.

43 3 Basic shooting functions Adjusting picture brightness ( exposure compensation) This function a llows you to make fi ne changes to th e exposure setting. You can adjust the exposure in the ra nge of ±2.0 EV in 1 /2 EV steps. When t he setting is c hanged, you can check the result o n the monitor.
44 4 Additional shoot ing functions At a sporting event… Use movie mode to capture thrilling action. Or use sequential shooting mode to take a succession of shots of a goal and pick out the best ones later. In the country or at a tourist spot… Use panorama mode* to capture a beautiful mountain range or impressive building.
45 4 Additional shooting functions Adjusting picture coloration The color of the subje ct differs depending on l ighting conditi ons. For instance, when da ylight, the set ting sun, or t ungsten lighting are reflected on white paper, the shade of white produ ced will be slightly dif ferent for each.

49 4 Additional shooting functions Panorama shooting You can take advantage of pa norama shooting with an Olymp us xD- Picture Card. Pa norama shooting let s you connect pictures with overlapping edges into a single panoramic pict ure, using the OLYMPUS Master software.

52 5P l a y b a c k With film-type cameras, you cannot see the pictures you have taken until the film has been developed. And aren’t you sometimes disappointed with the results when you do eventually see them? Pictures of blurred scenery or someone with their eyes shut.
53 5 Playback Playing back still pictures When a card is in the camera , a picture from the card i s displayed. To play back pictures from the inte rnal memory, remove the card. 1 Press $ . • The last pict ure taken is dis played on the mo nitor (sing le-frame playb ack).

64 5 Playback Copying pictures to a card (BACKUP) You can copy (backup ) all the ima ge data stored in t he internal memory to the card. The i mage data in the i nternal memory is n ot erased by copyin g it to the card. The optional card is required to use the backu p function.
65 5 Playback Erasing pictures This function erases recorde d pictures. Pictures can be erase d either one at a time or all the pict ures in the i nternal memory or ca rd at once. • When you want to erase pictures in the internal memo ry, do not insert the card.

67 5 Playback Formatting This function lets you fo rmat the internal memory or card. Formatti ng prepares cards to receive data . • To format the interna l memory, do not insert the card.
68 6 Setting s One of the key features of a digital camera is that you can view the pictures you have taken immediately. But that isn’t all. For example, you can set the startup scree n so that one of the pictures you have taken is displayed when you turn the camera on.
69 6 Settings Saving camera settings (ALL RESET) This function let s you choose whether or not to save the current camera settings after the powe r is turned off. The settings aff ected by [ALL RESET] are listed below. The [ALL RESET] setting ([ON]/ [OFF]) applies to all modes.
70 6 Settings Changing the display language You can select a language f or on-screen display. Availabl e languages vary depending on t he area where you pu rchased this camera. 73 6 Settings Resetting the file name (FILE NAME) The camera automatical ly creates file names and folder names f or images to be stored in. Files can be numbered from 0001 to 9999 and folders can be numbered from 100 to 999. Exampl es are shown below.
74 6 Settings Checking the image pr ocessing function (PIXEL MAPPING) The pixel mapping feature allows the camera to ch eck and adjust the CCD and image pr ocessing fu nctions. It is not ne cessary t o operate this func tion freq uently. Approximate ly once a yea r is recomme nded.
75 6 Settings Setting the date and time This function let s you set the date and time. The date and t ime is saved with each picture, and is used in th e file name.
76 7 Printing pictures You can print out the pictures you have taken either at a photo store or at home on your own printer. If you go to a photo store, it is a good idea to store the print reservation data on the card first. This lets you se lect the picture s you want to print and decide how many prints you want.
77 7 Printing pi ctures Direct printing (PictBridge) By connecti ng the camer a to a Pict Bridge-compa tible print er with the US B cable, you can print ou t recorded pi ctures direct ly. With the camer a connected t o the printer , select the pictures yo u want to p rint and th e number of prints on th e camera’s monitor.

The basic print ing method f or printi ng one picture is shown below. On e print of your selected pic ture will be pr inted using th e standard s ettings of y our printer.

91 8 Connecting the camera to a computer Flow Using the USB cable provided with your camera, you can connect the camera and computer and download ( transfer) the images to your compute r using the OLYMPUS Master software, also provided with the camera.

Using OLYMPUS Master 94 8 Connecting the camera to a computer Windows 1 Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. • The OLYMPUS M aster setup screen is displayed . • If the screen is not displayed, double-cli ck the “My Computer” icon and click the CD-ROM icon.

Starting up OLYMPUS Master 98 8 Connecting the camera to a computer •W i n d o w s X P When the ca mera is con nected to t he computer, the screen for selec ting an image file operation is displayed. As OLYMPUS Master will be used to download i mages, click “Cancel”.
