27 1 Getting Started CA UTION • The CR-V3 (Olympus-brand LB-01) lithium batter y packs are not rechargeable. • Make sure that the camera power is off bef ore inser ting the batter ies. • Alkaline batter ies deliver markedly inf erior performance, especially in cold weather .
Inserting the Batteries (continued) These batteries cannot be used: Batteries with all or par t of the electr ical insulation sheath peeled off. The negative electrode (minus terminal) is flat and only par tially covered b y the seal (electrical insulation sheath).
31 1 Getting Started Setting the Date and Time If the batteries are removed from the camera or allo wed to lose their charge, date and time settings will fail and must be reset. Make sure the date and time settings are correct before taking important pictures.

Chapter 2 Learning the Basics 35 Checking the Control P anel Is the SmartMedia card inserted? If you f orget to inser t the card, or if there is any other problem with the card, the monitor will automatically light up and display a message . Read the message and correct the problem.

39 Shooting T echnique Depends on Distance to the Subject Deciding whether to use the viewfinder or the monitor displa y to set up a shot depends on the distance between you and y our subject. Determine the approximate distance bef ore taking the photo.
T aking Pictures Full-press 1 Press the shutter release button all the wa y down (full-press). • Press the shutter release button gently . If you press it too hard, the camera will mov e and blur the shot. • The shot is taken and the camera beeps.
NO TE • Depending on the record mode, it takes between 2 and 40 seconds to write the image to the card. • The time you have to w ait and the number of storable pictures v aries depending on the record mode. T aking Photos Using the Monitor 1 Press the monitor button.
45 2 Learning the Basics 44 T aking Photos Using the Flash In low light situations, open the flash in adv ance. When the flash is needed If the shutter release button is half-pressed, the orange lamp next to the vie wfinder will blink. In this case you need to use the flash.

49 3 Playing Images Back HELP • After tur ning the power on, the monitor may flash and displa y an image after 0.5 to 2 seconds. This is not a malfunction. T urning the Po wer Off in Playbac k Mode 1 Press the monitor button. • The monitor display shuts down and the pow er tur ns off.

57 3 Playing Images Back One-Frame Erase Y ou may er ase unwanted pictures to increase av ailable storage space . One-frame erase cannot be used when a picture is protected, or a write-protect seal is on the card. T o erase these pictures , you must cancel the protection feature or remo ve the write-protect seal from the card.

61 4 T aking Better Pictures Using Fixed Focus Quick Focus Use the quick f ocus when you are not ab le to get the desired results with autofocus . This feature disables autof ocusing and lets you set the focus to either “Close” (8 ft) or “Distant” ( ∞ ).

In the red-ey e reduction flash mode, the camera will emit a series of rapid pre-flashes bef ore the actual flash fires.
67 4 T aking Better Pictures Using the Flash (continued) Off (Flash Override) When you do not w ant the flash to fire ev en in the dark, close the flash. Use this mode in situations where flash photograph y is prohibited, such as ar t museums and live stage perf ormances, or when taking pictures in twilight or of night scenes.
69 Enlarging the Subject (Digital T elephoto Mode) Using the digital telephoto mode, its subject can be enlarged to 1.6x, 2x and 2.5x its original size.
