30 3 Basic shooting functions Zooming in on a distant subject You can zoom in on your subject usi ng the optical zoom and digit al zoom. With the optical zoom, the image is enlarged on the CCD when the lens magnification is changed, and th e image is formed by all the CCD pixels.

32 3 Basic shooting functions Taking close-up pictures (macro/ super macro) Focusing is usually sl ow when you get close to a subject (wi de-angle: 20 cm/7.9" to 50 cm/19.7"; tele photo: 50 cm/19.7" to 90 cm/35.4 "). However, in macro mode focusing is performed quickl y.

Or use sequential shooting mode to take a succession of shots of a goal and pick out the best ones later. In the country or at a tourist spot… Use panorama mode to capture a b eautiful mountain range or impressive building.
37 4 Additional shooting fun ctions Adjusting picture brightness ( exposure compensation) This function a llows you to make fi ne changes to the exp osure setting. Yo u can adjust the exposure in the range of ±2.0 EV in 0.5 EV steps. When the setting is c hanged, you can chec k the result o n the monitor.
38 4 Additional sh ooting func tions Adjusting picture coloration The color of the subject d iffers depending on lighting co nditions. For instance, wh en daylight, the setting sun, or tungsten light ing are reflected on white paper, the shade of white produced will be slightly different for each.

43 4 Additional shooting fun ctions Panorama shooting You can take advantage of pa norama shooting with an Olympus xD- Picture Card. Pa norama shooting lets you conne ct pictures with overlapping edges into a single panoramic pict ure, using the OLYMPUS Master software.

54 5 Playback Protecting pictures You are recommended t o protect import ant pictures to av oid accidentall y erasing them. Protected picture s cannot be erased by the single-frame/ all- frame erase function, bu t they are all erased by formatting. Select the picture that you want to protect, and display the to p menu.

57 5 Playback Formatting This function lets you fo rmat the card. Formatting prepares cards t o receive data. • Before using no n-OLYMPUS cards or cards which hav e been formatt ed on a computer, you mu st format them with this camera. All existing dat a, includin g protected pict ures, are erased when the card is formatted.
58 6 Setting s One of the key features of a digital camera is that you can view the pictures you have taken immediately. But that isn’t all. For example, you can save the settings you made for certain functions so that you may use them even after the power is turned off.
59 6 Setting s Saving camera settings (ALL RESET) This function let s you choose whether or not to save the current camera settings after the powe r is turned off. The settings aff ected by [ALL RESET] are listed below. The [ALL RESET] setting ([ON]/ [OFF]) applies to all modes .

61 6 Setting s Viewing pictures immediately (REC VIEW) You can choose whether or not to displ ay the picture you have just taken on the monitor. ON This disp lays the p icture whi le it is be ing recorded . This is useful for making a brief che ck of the p icture you have just t aken.
62 6 Settings Resetting the file name (FILE NAME) The camera automatica lly creates file names and fol der names for images to be stored in . Files can be numbe red from 0001 to 9999 and folders can be numbered from 100 to 999. Examples are shown bel ow.
63 6 Setting s Checking the image processing function (PIXEL MAPPING) The pixel m apping featur e allows the c amera to chec k and adjus t the CCD and image proce ssing functi ons. It is no t necessary to operate th is function frequently. Approximatel y once a year is recommende d.
64 6 Settings Setting the date and time This function let s you set the date and time. The date and time is saved with each picture, and is us ed in the file name.
65 7 Printing pictures You can easily print out the pictures recorded on the card, when this camera is docked with the ImageLink compatible printer. For more details on ImageLink compatible printers, refer to the printer’s instruction manual.
66 7 Printing pictures Direct printing (PictBridge) By connecti ng the camer a to a PictBri dge-compati ble printer with the USB cable, you can print out recorded pic tures direc tly. With th e camera connect ed to the pr inter, select the p ictures you want to print and the n umber of prints o n the camera’s monitor.
