A C Fuse —The A C fuse inside the unit is not user-ser- viceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact your Onkyo de aler .
4 En Speaker Precautions Placement • The subwoofer cabinet is ma de out of wood and is there- fore sensiti ve to e xtreme temperatures and humidity , do not put it in locations subjec t to direct sunlight or in humid places, such as near an air con ditioner , humidifier , bathroom, or kitchen.
5 En Installing the Batte ries Note • If the remote controller doesn’ t work reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix new and old batteries or diff erent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remove the batteries to prevent damage from leak- age or corrosion.

9 En Speaker P ac kage a Speaker terminals These push terminals are for connecting the speaker to the HT-R280 with the supplied speaker cables. The supplied speaker cables are color -coded for easy identif ication. Simply connect each cable to the same- colored positi ve speak er terminal.

11 En About Home Theater Y ou can use two sets of speake rs with the A V recei ver: Speak ers A and Speakers B . Speakers A should be used in your main listeni ng room for up to 5.1-channel playback. * While Speakers B is on, Speakers A is reduced to 2.
12 En Connections Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configurat ion The follo wing table indicate s the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you hav e. For 5.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need 5 speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
13 En Connecting the Sp eaker Cables Screw-type speaker termi nals Using Banana Plu gs • If you are using banana plugs, tighten the speak er terminal before inserting the banana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
14 En The speakers can easily be wa ll mounted b y using the ke y- hole slots. T o prev ent the speaker from vibrating ag ainst the wall, attach tw o of the supplied thick rubber stopp ers to the rear of each speaker .
15 En Connected ima g e with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-checked all A V connections.
16 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are shown belo w . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 30 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 51 ) and “Using an RIHD-comp atible TV , Player , or Recorder” ( ➔ 52 ).

18 En W ith u (Remote Interacti ve), you can use the following special functions: ■ System On/A uto P ower On When you start playback on a component connected via u , if the A V receiv er is on Sta ndby , it will automati- cally turn on and select th at component as the input source.
19 En The A V receive r supports sev eral connection formats for comp at ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the fo rmats supported by your components.

Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is ca ncelled when the A V receiver is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer, you can set the A V recei ver to turn off aut omatically after a specified peri od.
23 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection. Y ou can change the frequency steps ( ➔ 33 ). Listening to th e Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ Auto tuning mode When tuned into a station, the TU NED indicator lights.
24 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite FM/AM radio stations as presets. 25 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and how to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiver must be turned on for recording.
26 En Using the Listening Modes See “ About Listening Modes” for detailed information about the listening modes ( ➔ 26 ). Listening Mode Buttons MO VIE/TV button This butto n selects the listening modes intended for use with movies and TV . MUSIC button This butto n selects the listening modes intended for use with music.

28 En Onky o-Original DSP Listening Modes Note *1 For the Blu-ray Discs, Dolby Digital is used. *2 A V receiver can input the DSD signal from HDMI IN . Setting the output setting on the player side to PCM might obtain a better sound according to the player .
29 En Advanced Operations Adv anced Setup Note The on-screen setup menus are displayed when: • There is no video input, or • The video input is 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a con venient way to cha nge the A V receiver’ s various settin gs.
30 En Explanatory No tes Menu HDMI Inpu t If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/D VD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selector .
31 En Note •W h e n a n HDMI IN is assigned to an input selector in “HDMI Input” ( ➔ 30 ), this input assignment is automatically set to the same HDMI IN . And in addition to the usual inputs (e.g., COAX , etc.), you can also select HDMI inputs.
32 En ■ Left, Center, Righ t, Surrou nd Right, Su rround Left, Subwoofer ` Specify the dist ance from the each speake r to your lis- tening position. Note • The speaker distance setting cannot be changed while a pair of headphones is connected, or “ Audio TV OUT ” setting is s et to “ On ” ( ➔ 34 ) or Speakers B is on.
33 En DTS Setting Neo:6 Music ■ Center Im age ` 0 to 2 to 5 W ith this setting, you can specify b y how mu ch the front left and right channel output is attenuated in order to create the center c hannel. Setting a v alue “0” in the middle is set to hear a sound.
34 En Menu HDMI Set up ■ A udio TV OUT ` Off : HDMI audio is not output. ` On : HDMI audio is output. This preference dete rmines whether audio received at the HDMI IN is output by the HDMI OUT .
35 En Note •T h e “ Po wer Control ” setting can be set on ly when the above “ HDMI Control ” setting is set to “ On ”. • HDMI power control only works with p -compatible components that support it and may not w ork properly with some components due to thei r settings or compatibility .
36 En EX.BASS EX.B ASS is a technology that have dev eloped by experi- ments and listening tests to reproduce a natural deeper bass. When you turn th e mode on, you can get dynamic and deeper presence on your movies and music. ■ EX.B ASS ` Off: EX.B A SS off.
37 En A udio Selector Y ou can set priorities of a udio output when there are both digital and analog inputs. ■ AudioSel ` ARC : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT of the A V receiver. *1 W ith this selection the TV’ s audio can be automati- cally selected as a prior ity among other assignments.
38 En Controlling iPod & Other Components Contr olling iP od Models sold are different depending on the re gion. Connecting an Onky o Dock No. Onkyo Dock Cable Note Pa ge A UP-A1 Dock (Uni versal Port Opt ion Dock) — • When UP-A1 Dock that seated iPod is connected, the power consumption on standby mode slightly increases.
39 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or mo vie stored on your iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
40 En Note • Enter the appropriate remote c ontrol code before using the A V receiver’ s remote controller for the first time ( ➔ 42 ). • Connect the RI Dock to the A V receiver with an u cable ( ➔ 38 ). • Set the RI Dock’ s RI MODE switch to “HDD” or “HDD/ DOCK”.

42 En Contr olling Other Onky o Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-762M) to control your other Onkyo A V components. This section explains ho w to enter the remote control code for a component that you want to control: D VD, CD, etc.
43 En If you want to control an Onk yo component by pointing the remote controller dir ectly at it, use the follo wing remote control codes: ` 32900 : Onkyo Blu-ray Disc play er ` 32901 : Onkyo HD-D V.

51 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demand s of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mult imedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for connect ing TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc/D VD players, set-top boxes, and oth er video compo- nents.
52 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV , Pla yer , or Recor der p , which stands for Remote Interacti ve ov er HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The A V receiver can be us ed with CEC (Consumer Electronics Cont rol), which allo ws system control over HDMI and is part of the HDMI standard.
