AV Receiv er HT -R510 Instruction Manual Thank you for purchasing the Onkyo A V Recei ver . Please read this manual thoroughly before making con- nections and plugging in the unit. F ollo wing the instructions in this manual will enable you to obtain optimum performance and listening enjoyment from your ne w A V Recei ver .

Replacement Parts —When replacement parts are required, be sure the service technician has used replacement parts specified by the manufacturer or ha ve the same characteristics as the orig- inal part. 4 Precautions— Continued 1. Recording Copyright —Unless it’ s for personal use only , recording copyrighted material is illeg al without the permission of the copyright holder . 2. AC Fuse —The A C fuse inside the HT -R510 is not user -service- able.
5 Bef ore Using the HT -R510 Notes: • The supplied batteries should last for about six months, although this will v ary with usage. • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries, or dif ferent types of bat- teries.
6 Contr ols & Connectors Front P anel For detailed information, refer to the pages in parenthesis. A ST ANDBY/ON button (24) This button is used to set the HT -R510 to On or Standby . For models with a PO WER switch, this button has no ef fect unless the PO WER switch is set to ON.
7 Controls & Connector s —Continued Display For detailed information, refer to the pages in parenthesis. 1 A & B speaker indicators (28, 32) Indicator A lights up when speaker set A is on. Indicator B lights up when speaker set B is on. 2 MUTING indicator (32) This indicator flashes when the HT -R510 is muted.
8 Controls & Connector s —Continued Rear P anel For detailed information, refer to the pages in parenthesis. A COMPONENT VIDEO (10, 12, 14, 16) These RCA/phono connectors can be used to connect a TV , D VD player , or other A V component with component video inputs and outputs.
9 Controls & Connector s —Continued RC-518M This page describes only those buttons that can be used to control the HT -R510 when the remote controller is in RCVR mode (Recei ver mode). The other modes, and information on using the remote controller to control your other A V compo- nents, are explained on page 41.
10 Connecting Y our A V Components • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed all audio and video connections.

21 Installing Y our Speaker s —Continued Before you connect your speakers, read the follo wing: • Disconnect the po wer cord from the wall outlet. • Read the instructions supplied with your speakers. •P ay close attention to speaker wiring polarity .
22 Connecting Antenna This chapter explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commer- cially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas.
23 Connecting Antenna —Continued If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable outdoor FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
24 Po wering Up & Setting Up the HT -R510 Before connecting the po wer cord, connect all your speakers and A V components (see page 10 to page 23). W ith this function you can assign A V components (i.e., input sources) with digital audio outputs to the HT -R510’ s digital inputs.
25 Configuring Speaker Set A This chapter describes ho w to configure speaker set A to achie ve the best results from your surround sound system. There is no speaker configuration for speaker set B.
26 Configuring Speaker Set A —Continued To achiev e the best bass performance from your speaker sys- tem, you need to set the crossov er frequency according to the size and frequency response of your subw oofer and other speakers (front, center , and surround).
27 Configuring Speaker Set A —Continued W ith this function you can adjust the volume of each indi vid- ual speaker so that you can hear all speakers equally at the listening position. Note: Y ou cannot use this function while the HT -R510 is muted (see page 32).
28 Pla ying Y our A V Components This chapter explains ho w you can play your A V components through the HT -R510. See pages 10–19 for information on connecting your A V components to the HT -R510. Using Digital Inputs The digital input assigned to the input source (see page 24) has priority ov er that input source’ s analog input.
29 Playing Y our A V Components —Contin ued While “ Auto” is displayed, the name of the digital input cur- rently assigned to the input source (page 24) is displayed in parenthesis. For e xample, “ Auto (CO AX). ” The possible inputs are OPT1, OPT2, and CO AX.
30 Using the T uner This chapter explains ho w to use the built-in tuner . Y ou can store your fa vorite radio stations as presets for con- venient selection. If y ou selected the FM band: The A UTO indicator appears on the display and the HT -R510 searches for the next station automatically .
31 Using the T uner —Continued Y ou can store up to 30 of your fa vorite radio stations as pre- sets. Y ou can easily select previously stored presets as follo ws. Y ou can delete unwanted presets as follo ws. Other Functions: See page 32 for functions that you can use while listening to the radio.
32 Common Functions This chapter explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can turn on and off speak er sets A and B indi vidually . Note: When you turn on speaker set B, the listening mode for speaker set A is set to Stereo. W ith this function you can temporarily mute the output of the HT -R510.
33 Common Functions —Continued W ith this function you can adjust the brightness of the dis- play . W ith this function you can adjust the volume le vel of each indi vidual speaker as you like.
34 Using the Listening Modes W ith its built-in surround-sound decoders and DSP pro- grams, the HT -R510 can transform your home listening room into a movie theater or concert hall. To get the most from surround sound, it’ s important that you install and configure your speakers correctly .
35 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The listening modes are explained belo w . Basic Modes Direct: The selected input source is fed directly to the po wer- amp stages and through to the front left and right speakers with minimal processing.

37 A udio Adjust Functions These functions only work with speaker set A. Audio Adjust provides various functions for adjusting the sound, including se veral especially for use with Dolby Digi- tal, DTS, and Pro Logic II material. The follo wing table lists the Audio Adjust functions, their ranges and default v alues.
38 A udio Adjust Functions —Continued The Audio Adjust functions are explained belo w . ■ Bass W ith this function you can boost or cut lo w-frequency sounds output by the front speakers from –12 dB to +12 dB in 2 dB steps.
39 Recor ding This chapter explains ho w to record the selected input source to an A V component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from two dif ferent sources. Y ou can record only to A V components that are connected to the T APE OUT or VIDEO 1 OUT connectors.
40 Using the Remote Contr oller RC-518M with Y our Other A V Components Connecting your -compatible Onkyo CD player , DVD player , or cassette recorder to the HT -R510 via allows you to control your system with the HT -R510’ s remote con- troller by pointing it at the HT -R510.
