4 En Speaker Precautions Placement • The subwoofer cabinet is ma de out of wood and is there- fore sensiti ve to e xtreme temperatures and humidity , do not put it in locations subjec t to direct sunlight or in humid places, such as near an air con ditioner , humidifier , bathroom, or kitchen.
5 En Installing the Batte ries Note • If the remote controller doesn’ t work reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix new and old batteries or diff erent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remove the batteries to prevent damage from leak- age or corrosion.

12 En Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configurat ion The follo wing table indicate s the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you hav e. For 7.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need se ven speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
13 En Connecting the Sp eaker Cables Screw-type speaker termi nals Using Banana Plu gs (Nor th American models) • If you are using banana plugs, tighten the speak er terminal before inserting the banana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
14 En The speakers can easily be wa ll mounted b y using the ke y- hole slots. T o preven t the speaker from vibrating against the wall, attach tw o of the supplied thick rubber stoppers to the rear of each speaker .
15 En Connected ima ge with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-check ed all A V connections.
16 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are shown belo w . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 34 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 60 ) and “Using an RIHD-compatible TV , Player, or Record er” ( ➔ 61 ).

18 En Note • When you connect to both A UX INPUT A UDIO jacks and A UX INPUT LINE IN jack at the same time, AUX INPUT LINE IN jack will be giv en a higher priority . • The A V receiv er can output audio and video signals f rom the AU X I N P U T jacks to the VCR/D VR OUT jacks.
19 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V receiver won’ t pick up any radi o signals without any antenn a connected, so you must co nnect the antenna to use the tuner . Cautio n • Be careful that you don’t injure yourself when using thumbtacks.
20 En The A V receiver supports se vera l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your co mponents.
21 En T urning On/Off the A V Receiver Tu r n i n g O n Pre ss ON/ST AN DBY on the front panel. or Pre ss RECEIVER f ollowed by ON/ST ANDBY on the remote contr oller . The A V recei ver comes on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY indi cator goe s off.
22 En Basic Operations ■ Operating on the A V receiv er ■ Operating with the remote contro ller Note • When the subwoofer volume le vel is set to a positiv e (+) value, the maximum master volume lev el is reduced proportionally . T o set the level of the subwoofer , use the OUTPUT LEVEL control.
23 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiver. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is cancelled when the A V receiver is set to Standby . W ith the sleep timer, yo u can set the A V receiv er to turn off au tomatically after a specified pe riod.
24 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection. This model changes FM/AM frequenc y in 200/10kHz (or 50/9kHz) steps. In manual tuning mode, FM st ations will be in mono.
25 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Selecting Pre sets Tip • Y ou can also use the remote controller’ s number buttons to select a preset directly . Deleting Presets When tuned into an RDS station, the RDS indicator lights.
26 En Display ing Radio T ext (RT) Note •T h e m e s s a g e “ Wa i t i n g ” may a ppear while the A V receiver waits for the R T information. • If the message “ No T ext Data ” appears on the display , no R T information is av ailable. Finding Stations by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by type.
27 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and ho w to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiver must be turned on for recording.
28 En Using the Listening Modes See “ About Listening Modes” for detailed information about the listening modes ( ➔ 29 ). Listening Mode Buttons MO VIE/TV button This butto n selects the listening modes intended for use with movies and TV . MUSIC button This butto n selects the listening modes intended for use with music.

T he “ Sp Config ” (presence of speakers), “ Sp Distance ” and “ A/V Sync ” settings are enabled, but much of the processing set via A UDIO is disabled.
31 En Dolby Digital In th is mode, audio f rom the input source is output without sur round-sound processing. “ Sp Conf ig ” (presence of speakers), “ Crossover ”, “ Sp Dis- tance ”, “ A/V Sync ” and much of the processing set via AU D I O are enabled.
32 En Onky o-Original DSP Listening Modes Note *1 When the input source contain s the encoded front hi gh channel, front high speakers outp ut the sound. *2 If there are no surr ound back speakers, or Powered Z one 2 is being used, Dolby Pro Logic I I is used.
33 En Ad v anced Setup Note The on-screen setup menus are displayed when: • There is no video input, or • The video input is 480p, 576p, 72 0p, 1080i, or 1080p. The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a con venient way to change the A V receiver’ s various settings.
34 En Explanatory No tes Menu HDMI Inpu t If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . For e xample, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/D VD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selector .
35 En Note •W h e n a n HDMI IN is assigned to an input selector in “HDMI Input” ( ➔ 34 ), this input assignment is automatically set to the same HDMI IN . And in addition to the usual inputs (e.g., CO AX1 , COAX2 , etc.), you can also select HDMI inputs.
36 En Menu Sp Distance Here you can specify the distan ce from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speaker arriv es at the listener’ s ears as the sound designer intended. ■ Unit ` feet : Distances ca n be set in feet.
37 En ■ Dimensi on ` –3 to 0 to +3 W ith this setting, you can move the sound f ield forward or backward when using the Dolb y Pro Logic IIx Music listening mode.
38 En ■ Reference Level A udyssey Dy namic EQ™ Reference Lev el Offset ` 0d B : It should be used when listening to movies. ` 5d B : Select this setting for cont ent that has a v ery wide dynamic range, such as classica l music. ` 10 dB : Select this setting for jazz or other music that has a wider dynamic range.
39 En Menu Name Edit Y ou can enter a preset name for each indi vidual input selector for easy identification. When entered, the preset name will app ear on the display .
40 En Menu HDMI Set up ■ A udio TV OUT ` Off : HDMI audio is not output. ` On : HDMI audio is output. This preference dete rmines whether audio received at the HDMI IN is output by the HDMI OUT .
41 En Note •T h e “ Po wer Control ” setting can be set on ly when the above “ HDMI Control ” setting is set to “ On ”. • HDMI power control only works with p -compatible components that support it and may not w ork properly with some components due to thei r settings or compatibility .
42 En A udyss ey Settings ■ Dynamic EQ ■ Dyn V ol (Dynamic V olume) See “Dynamic EQ” and “Dynamic V olume” of “ Audio Adjust” ( ➔ 37 ).
43 En A/V Sync When using progressi ve scanning on your Blu-ray Disc/ D VD player , you may find that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting, you can correct this b y delaying the audio signals.
44 En Zone 2 In addition to your main listening room, you can also enjoy pla yback in the other room, or as we call Zone 2. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two w ays you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
45 En If you’ ve connected your Zone 2 speakers to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V rece iv er” ( ➔ 44 ), you must set the “ Front Hi gh/Zone2 ” setting to “ Zone2 ”.

48 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the supplied UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or movie stored on y our Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
49 En ■ Charging Y our iP od models Battery The UP-A1 Dock charges your iPod models battery while your iPod is in the UP-A1 Dock and connected to the UNIVERSAL PORT jack on the A V receiv er. While your iPod is seated in the UP-A1 Dock, its battery will be charge d when the A V receiv er is set to “On” or “Standb y”.

51 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V recei ver’ s remote controller (RC-764M) to control your ot her A V components. This section explains ho w to ente r the remote control code (with the default underlined ) for a component that you want to control: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
52 En If you want to control an Onkyo component b y pointing the remote controller direct ly at it, use the follo wing remote control codes: ` 32900 : Onkyo Blu-ray Disc player ` 32901 : Onkyo HD-D VD.
