7 Bef ore Using the TX-L55 Notes: • The batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage. • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries.

B ST ANDBY indicator (29) This indicator lights up when the TX-L55 is in Standby mode, and it flashes while a signal is being receiv ed from the remote controller .

11 Remote Contr oller AMP/TUNER mode is used to control the TX-L55. To select AMP/TUNER mode, press the REMO TE MODE [AMP] button. For detailed information, refer to the pages in parenthesis. A ST ANDBY button (29) This button is used to set the TX-L55 to Standby .
12 Remote Controller —Continued D VD mode can be used to control an Onkyo D VD player connected to the TX-L55 via . It can also be used to control other D VD players (see page 55).
13 Remote Controller —Continued A ST ANDBY button This button is used to set the D VD player to Standby . B ON button This button is used to turn on the D VD player and set it to Standby . C Number buttons These buttons are used to enter title, chapter , and track numbers and times for locating specific points in time.
14 Remote Controller —Continued TV mode can be used to control your TV . Y ou must enter the appropriate remote control code for your TV before using this mode (see page 55). To select TV mode, pr ess the REMO TE MODE [TV] button. A ST ANDBY button This button is used to set the TV to Standby .
15 About Home Theater W ith the TX-L55’ s superb functionality you can enjoy surround sound with a real sense of mo vement in your o wn home—just like being in a movie theater or concert hall. For best results with D VDs that feature THX Surround EX, use a THX-certified THX speaker system.
16 Connecting Speaker s Before you connect your speakers, read the follo wing: • Disconnect the power cord from the w all outlet. • Read the instructions supplied with your speakers.
17 Connecting Speakers —Continued The following illustration sho ws which speakers should be connected to which terminals. 18 Connecting Antenna This chapter explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and how to connect commercially a v ailable outdoor FM antenna. The TX-L55 won’ t pick up any radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
19 Connecting Antenna —Continued ■ Using the 75/300-ohm Antenna Adapter The 75/300-ohm Antenna Adapter is not supplied with American and European models. The 75/300-ohm antenna adapter can be used to connect an FM antenna using either 75-ohm coaxial cable or 300-ohm twin-core flat cable.
20 Connecting A V Components • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ v e completed and double-checked all audio and video connections.
21 Connecting A V Components —Continued By connecting the audio and video outputs of your D VD player and other video components to the TX-L55, you can select both the audio and video source simultaneously simply by selecting the appropriate input source on the TX-L55.
22 Connecting A V Components —Continued Monitor Out ■ Using Composite Video Use a composite video cable to connect the TX-L55’ s V MONITOR OUT to a composite video input on your TV , as shown. ■ Using S-Video Use an S-V ideo cable to connect the TX-L55’ s S MONITOR OUT to an S-V ideo input on your TV , as shown.
23 Connecting A V Components —Continued Video Connections Y ou only need to use one of the following video connec- tion methods. ■ Using Composite Video Use a composite video cable to connect the TX-L55’ s V D VD IN to the composite video output on your D VD player , as shown.
24 Connecting A V Components —Continued D VD Multichannel Connection If your D VD player supports multichannel audio formats such as SA CD and D VD-Audio, and it has a multichan- nel analog audio output, you can enjoy those formats.
25 Connecting A V Components —Continued Video Connections Use a component video cable to connect the TX-L55’ s COMPONENT VIDEO 2 IN to the component video output on your D-VHS VCR, as sho wn. Y our TV must also be connected via component video. A component video connection provides better picture quality than an S-V ideo connection.
26 Connecting A V Components —Continued Video Connections Y ou only need to use one of the following video connec- tion methods. ■ Using Composite Video Use a composite video cable to connect the TX-L55’ s V VIDEO 2 IN to the composite video output on your video component, as shown.
27 Connecting A V Components —Continued ■ Using Analog Connections If your video component doesn’t ha ve digital audio out- puts, or you want to record from it, you’ll need to mak e the following analog audio connections.
28 Connecting A V Components —Continued ■ Using a Coaxial or Optical Connection for Playbac k from Y our Digital Recorder • Use an optical digital audio cable to connect the TX-L55’ s OPT 2 DIGIT AL INPUT to the optical output on your recorder , as shown.
29 Connecting A V Components —Continued W ith (Remote Interactiv e) you can control your -compatible Onkyo D VD player with the TX-L55’ s remote controller , and use the following special function.
30 Basic Setup This chapter explains the basic settings you need to make to get the TX-L55 up and running. Speaker Detection The TX-L55 can automatically detect which speakers you’ ve connected to it (front, center , surround, and sur- round back). Notes: •A lw ays use two surround speakers (left and right).
31 Basic Setup —Continued Notes: • This procedure can also be performed by using the [SETUP] button. Press the REMO TE MODE [AMP] button follo wed by the [SETUP] button. Use the Up and Down [ ]/[ ] b uttons to select “Lev el Cal, ” and then press [ENTER].
32 Basic Setup —Continued Component Video Input Setup This section explains ho w to change the component video input socket to input source assignments. Y ou only need to change them if you connect a video component to a component video input other than the default assign- ment listed in the following table.
33 Basic Operation This section explains ho w to select the input source (i.e., A V component) that you want to listen to or watch. Selecting the Input Source MASTER VOLUME INPUT + 10 0 CLEAR 123 456 .
34 Basic Operation —Continued This chapter explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the TX-L55. Notes: • The [MUTING] button can also be used to mute the TX-L55 while the remote controller is in D VD mode (see page 12).
35 Basic Operation —Continued W ith the sleep timer you can set the TX-L55 to automat- ically turn off after a specified period. If you need to cancel the sleep timer , press the [SLEEP] button repeatedly until the SLEEP indicator disappears. To check the time remaining until the TX-L55 sleeps, press the [SLEEP] button.
36 Basic Operation —Continued W ith the built-in tuner you can enjo y FM radio stations, and store your fa vorite stations as presets for quick selec- tion. T uning on the TX-L55 T uning with the Remote Controller In Auto T uning mode, the TX-L55 finds av ailable radio stations automatically .
37 Basic Operation —Continued ■ Manual T uning Mode Notes: • The American model changes FM frequenc y in 0.1 MHz steps. • Other models change frequency in 0.05 MHz steps for FM. • In Manual T uning mode, FM stations will be in mono. Switch back to Auto T uning mode for stereo.
38 Basic Operation —Continued Deleting Presets When the input source is FM: When tuned to an RDS radio station broadcasting PS information (Eur opean models only): *This information is displayed for about five seconds, then the previously displayed information reappears.
39 Using the Listening Modes W ith its comprehensiv e collection of surround and DSP listening modes, the TX-L55 can transform your home listening room in to a movie theater or concert hall. To get the most from surround sound, it’ s important that you install and configure your speakers correctly .
40 Using the Listening Modes —Continued Basic Modes Mono Use this mode when watching an old movie with a mono soundtrack, or to select the multilingual soundtracks recorded in the left and right channels of some movies. It can also be used when playing a D VD or other source with multiplex ed audio, such as a karaoke D VD.
41 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS-ES DTS-ES supports up to 6.1 channels. The TX-L55 sup- ports both DTS-ES Discr ete and DTS-ES Matrix . Discrete mode is for use with DTS 6.1 material. W ith an additional surround-back channel, each 6.1 channel is digitally recorded for a real- istic sense of mov ement and space.
42 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The following table lists all of the listening modes and indicates which ones can be used with each signal format. About the “Speakers necessary” Column ● 2 or more: can be selected with any speaker setup.
43 Using the Listening Modes —Continued This setting determines if Dolby Digital and DTS mate- rial is played using 6.1-channels or 5.1-channels. This setting only applies when you’ re using a sur.
44 Ad v anced Operation Y ou can adjust the lev el of individual speak ers. The adjustments are temporary and will be cancelled when the TX-L55 is set to Standby . Notes: •Y ou cannot use this function while the TX-L55 is muted. • Speakers that are set to No or Non in the Speaker Con- figuration cannot be adjusted.
45 Adv anced Operation —Continued The D VD multichannel input is for connecting a compo- nent with individual 5.1-channel analog audio outputs, such as a D VD player or MPEG decoder . See “D VD Multichannel Connection” on page 24 for hookup details.
46 Adv anced Operation —Continued Y ou can display information about the current input source. The following information can typically be displayed for input sources. ■ Analog Input Signals ■ PCM Input Signals ■ Other Digital Input Signals *1 If the input signal doesn’t contain rate information, nothing will be displayed.
47 Adv anced Operation —Continued This section explains ho w to record to an A V component with recording capability . Recording the Current Input Sour ce Y ou can record the audio and video, or just the audio from the current input source to an A V component con- nected to the VIDEO 1 OUT and A UDIO VIDEO 1 OUT sockets.
48 Ad v anced Setup Speaker Configuration This section explains ho w to specify which speakers are connected and their sizes. For speakers with a cone diameter larger than 6-1/2 inches (16 cm), specify Lr g. F or those with a smaller diameter , specify Sml.

50 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Distance To get the best from surround sound, it’ s important that the sound from each speaker reaches the listener at the same time. T o achieve this, you need to specify the dis- tance from each speaker to the listening position.
51 Adv anced Setup —Continued Setting the A udio Input Format Setting the Digital Input Format Normally , the TX-L55 detects the format of digital audio signals automatically .
52 Adv anced Setup —Continued Notes: • Select All or DTS when playing a DTS CD or LD. If you select PCM, only noise will be heard. Adjusting the Bass & T reble Y ou can adjust the bass and treble of the front speakers, except when using the Direct listening mode.
53 Adv anced Setup —Continued Using the Other A udio Adjust Functions W ith the audio adjust functions you can tailor the sound to your personal taste. Before using the audio adjust functions, choose a lis- tening mode first. All of the audio adjust functions are explained belo w .
54 Adv anced Setup —Continued PL II & PL IIx Music Modes & A udio Adjust The following P anorama, Dimension, and Center W idth functions can be used with only the Pro Logic II Music or Pro Logic IIx Music listening mode. The y cannot be adjusted if you’ re using the Pro Logic IIx listening mode for 6.
55 Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the TX-L55’ s remote controller (RC-575S) to control your D VD player and TV , ev en if it’ s made by another manufacturer . T o do this, you first need to enter the appropriate remote control code for your D VD player and TV .
56 Controlling Other Components —Continued Remote Control Codes When two or more codes are gi ven, try each one in turn, and choose the one that works best. Depending on the manufacturer and the component, the remote controller may not work as expected.

Notes: • The default control code for the REMO TE MODE [D VD] button is Onk yo, 5001. • The default control code for the REMO TE MODE [TV] button is Hitachi, 1071.
59 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using your TX-L55, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolv e the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer . Can’t turn on the TX-L55? • Make sure that the po wer cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet.
60 Tr oubleshooting —Continued There’ s no sound with a cer tain signal format? • Check the input signal format setting. Depending on the input source, you can select Auto, Multich, Ana- log, DTS, or PCM (page 51). • Check the digital audio output setting on the source component.
61 Tr oubleshooting —Continued • Make sure that the TX-L55 is not subjected to direct sunshine or in verter -type fluorescent lights. Relocate if necessary . • If the TX-L55 is installed in a rack or cabinet with col- ored-glass doors, the remote controller may not work reliably when the doors are closed.
