AV Receiver TX-NR1009 Instruction Manual Thank you for purchasing an Onkyo AV Receiver. Please read this manual thoroughl y before making connections and plugg ing in the unit. Following th e instructions in this manual will enable you to obtain opti mum performance and listening enjoyment from your new AV Receiver.

12 En Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Connecting the Speaker Cables The following illustration shows which speaker should be connected to each pair of terminals. If you’re using only one surround back speaker, connect it to the SURR BAC K L terminals.
13 En Speaker Configura tion The following table indicate s the channels you sh ould use depending on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many speakers you use, a powered subwoofer is recommended for a really powerful and solid bass.
14 En Using Dipole Speakers You can use dipole speakers for the su rround and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in two directions. Dipole speakers typically have an arrow printed on them to indicate how they should be positioned.
15 En Connecting a Power Amplifier If you want to use a more powerful power amplifier, you can use the AV receiver as a preamp. Connect all speaker outputs to the power amplifie r. See the manuals supplied with your amplifier for details. Note *1 Specify “ None ” for any channel that you don’ t want to output ( ➔ page 48 ).
16 En Connecting AV componen ts • Before making any AV connections, read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-check ed all AV connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connect ions (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).
17 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assi gnments are shown below. ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 46 ).

Connecting Your Components The on-screen menus appear only on a TV tha t is connected to the HDMI OUT MAIN .
19 En Note *1 Do not connect the AV re ceiver’s USB port to a USB port on yo ur computer. Mu sic on your computer canno t be played thro ugh the AV receiver in this way. *2 Connect a turntable (MM) that has a built-in phono preamp to TV/CD IN , or connect it to PHONO IN with the ph ono preamp tur ned off.
20 En With u (Remote Interactive) , you can use th e following special functions: ■ System On/Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the AV receiver is on Standby, the AV receiver will au tomatically tu rn on and select that component as the input source.
21 En This section explains how to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV receiver won’t pick up any radi o signals without any antenna connected, so you must c onnect the antenna to use the tuner.
22 En Turning On & Basic Operatio ns Turning On/Off the AV Receiver Tip • For details on power manage ment settings, see “Auto Standby” ( ➔ page 61 ). Turning On 1 (European and Asian models) Set % POWER to the ON position ( ^ ) on the front panel.
23 En Playback You can determine the langua ge used for the onscreen setup menus. See “ Language ” in the “ OSD Setup ” ( ➔ page 59 ). ■ Operating with the remo te controller ■ Operating on the AV receiver See “Controlling Other Comp onents” about th e operation of other components ( ➔ page 73 ).
24 En Note • The buttons you can use will differ depending on the devices and media used for playback. This section describes icons that appear on the display during media playback. This section explains how to play music/video files on the iPod/iPhone.
25 En Extended Mode (Music) control The music content informati on is displayed (lists are displayed), and you can control the music content while looking at the screen. Top screen list: Playlists, Ar tists, Albums, Genres, Songs, Composers, Shuffle Songs, Now Playing.
26 En Listening to Other Internet Radio To listen to other internet radio stations , insert the following step after step 1 in the “Listening to vTuner Internet Radio” section. Registering My Favorit es *1 You can add the currently playing song or station to the “ My Favorites ”.
27 En This section explains how to play music files on a computer or media server through the AV receiver (Server Playback). Windows Media Player 11 Set up This section explains how to configure Windows Media Player 11 so that the AV recei ver can play the music files stored on your computer.
28 En Using Remote Playback Using the Tuner With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favor ite st ations as presets for quick selection.
29 En ■ Tuning into stations by frequenc y You can tune into AM and FM stations directly by entering the appropriate frequency. Presetting AM/F M Stations You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note • You can name your radio presets fo r easy identification ( ➔ page 54 ).
30 En ■ Displaying Radio Te xt (RT) ■ Finding Stations by Type (PTY) You can search for ra dio stations by type. ■ Listening to Traffic News (TP) You can search for stations that broadcast traffic news. RDS progra m types (PTY ) 1 Press RT/PTY/TP once.
31 En Using Basic Functions With the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ ® XT automat ically determi nes the number of speakers connected, their size for purp oses of bass management, optimum cr ossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.
32 En Note • You can cancel Audyssey Mu ltEQ XT Ro om Correction and Speaker Setup at any point in this procedure simply by disconne cting the se tup micropho ne. • Do not connect or disconnect any speak ers during Audyssey MultEQ XT Room Corre ction and Speaker Setup.
33 En Error Messages While Audyssey MultEQ ® XT Room Correction and Speaker Setup is in progress, one of the error messages below may appear. The options are: ` Retry : Try again. ` Cancel : Cancel Audyssey M ultEQ XT Room Correction and Speaker Setup.
34 En Selecting Listening Modes See “About Listening Modes” for detailed information about the listening modes ( ➔ page 35 ). ■ Listening Mode Buttons MOVIE/TV bu tton This button selects the list ening modes intended for use with movies and TV.
35 En About Listening Modes The AV receiver’s listening modes can tr ansform your listening room into a movi e theater or concert hall, with high fidelity and stunning surround sound. ■ Explanatory Notes Input Sour ce The following audio formats are supported by the listening mode.
36 En ■ Onkyo-Original DSP Listen ing Modes ■ Listening Modes Listening Mode Description Input Source Speaker Layout Orchestra Suitable for classical or operatic musi c, this mode emphasizes the surround channels in order to widen the ster eo image, and simulates the natural reverberation of a large hall.
37 En Dolby Pro Logic IIx *3 Dolby Pro Logi c II Dolby Pro Logic IIx expands any 2-chann el source for 7.1-channel playback. It provides a very natur al and seamless surround -sound experience that fully envelops the listener. As well as music and movies, video games can also benefit from the dramatic spatial effects and vivid imaging.
38 En DTS-ES Discrete *6 This mode is for use with DTS-ES Discr ete soundtracks, which use a discrete surround back ch annel for true 6.1/7.1- channel playback. The seven totally separate audio channels pr ovide better spatia l imaging and 360- degree sound localization, perfect fo r sou nds that pan across the surround channels.
39 En Note *1 Pure Audio cannot be selected when Zone 2 is active . Besides, if you activate Zone 2 while Pure Audio is sel ected, the listening mode will automatic ally switch to Direct. *2 Based on the audio channel signal contained in the so urce, the corresponding speak ers will output the sound.
40 En The Home menu provides you qu ick access to frequently used menus without having to go throu gh the long standard menu. This menu enab les you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 For the PORT input selector, the name of Universal Port Option Dock will be displayed.
41 En You can display various info rmation about the current input source as follows. (Components connected to the UNIVERSAL PORT jack are excluded.) The following information ca n typically be displayed. *1 If the input signal is analog, “ Analog ” is displayed.
42 En You can set which speakers you want to use by priority. You can temporarily mute the output of the AV receiver. Selecting Speaker Layout 1 Press RECEIVER followed by SP LAYOUT repeatedly to select: ■ 9.1 ch playback ` Speaker Layout:SB/FH The sounds from surround back and fro nt high speakers are output by priority.
43 En By using ACTIVITIES in Easy macro mode, you can sequentially operate Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-but ton press. These commands are user-definabl e. See “Using Normal Macro s” ( ➔ page 78 ). ■ MY MOVIE First, the TV, the Onkyo DVD player, and the AV receiver are turned on.
44 En Advanced Operations Advanced Setup The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a convenient way to change the AV receiver’s various settings. Se ttings are organized into 9 ca tegories on the main menu . Carry out the settings by using the on-screen display.
45 En Main Menu Input/Output Assign Monitor Out If you connect your TV to HDMI output, “ Monitor Out ” setting is automatica lly set a nd composite video, S-Video, and component video sources are upconverted * and output.
46 En HDMI Input If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an input selector. For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector.
47 En Digital Audio Input If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an input selecto r. For example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN 1 , you must assign “ OPTICAL1 ” to the “ TV/CD ” input selector.
48 En Note •I f t h e “ Speakers Type(Front) ” setting is set to “ Bi-Amp ”, Powered Zone 2 can not be used. • When the “ Powered Zone 2 ” setting is set to “ Yes ”, the surround back and fron t wide speakers cannot be used. • When the “ Powered Zone 3 ” setting is set to “ Yes ”, front high speakers cannot be used.
49 En ■ Wireless Subw oofer ` Yes : The audio is output from th e speakers connected to the wireless unit. ` No : The audio is not output from the speakers connected to the wireless unit.
50 En Equalizer Settings With the Equalizer setting s, you can adjust the tone of speakers individually with a 7-band equalizer. The volume of each speaker can be set ( ➔ page 49 ). ■ Equalizer ` Manual : You can adjust the equa lizer for each speaker manually.
51 En Main menu Audio Adjust With the Audio Adjust functions and settings, you can adjust the sound and listening modes as you like. Multiplex/Mono ■ Multiplex Input Channel ` Main ` Sub ` Main/Sub This setting determ ines which channel of a stereo multiplex source is output.
52 En ■ Dolby Volume ` Off ` On Dolby Volume automati cally adjusts the differen ce in volume levels which can occur between different contents or source components, freeing the user from having to make volume adjustments. Also, by adjusting the frequency balance according to the playback volume, it recreates the original s ource audio.
53 En Items can be set i ndividually for each input selector. Main menu Source Setup Audyssey ■ Audyssey ` Off ` Movie : Select this set ting for movie material. The Audyssey indicator lights. ` Music : Select this setting for m usic material . The Audyssey indicator lights.
54 En Note • If you want to use Audyssey Dynamic EQ ® or Audyssey Dynamic Volume ® with THX listening modes, set the “ Loudness Plus ” setting to “ Off ” a nd set “ Preser ve THX Setti ngs ” to “ No ” ( ➔ page 50 ). • If you make Dynamic Volume ac tive, “ Dynamic E Q ” is set to “ On ”.
55 En To correct a character: Tip • To name a radio preset, use TU NER to select AM or F M, and then select the preset ( ➔ pa ge 29 ). • To restore a custom name to its def ault, erase the custom name by entering an empty white spac e for each letter.
56 En W ith “ Picture Mo de ”, you can change the follo wing settings to be suitable for the movie or game screen by one operation; “ Game Mode ”, “ Film Mode ”, “ Edge Enhancem ent ”,.
57 En ■ Saturation *1*3*5 ` –50 to 0 to +50 With this setting you ca n adjust saturation. “ –50 ” is the weakest colo r. “ +50 ” is the strongest color. ■ Color Temperature *3*5 ` Warm ` Normal ` Cool With this setting yo u can adjust the color temperat ure.
58 En ■ Fixed Mode ` Off : The format is de tected au tomatically. If no digital input signal is present, the corresponding analog input is used instead. ` PCM : Only 2-channel PCM format input signals will be heard. If the input signal is not PCM, the PCM indicator will flash and no ise may also be produced.
59 En ■ DTS/DTS-ES/DTS-HD With this setting, you can sp ecify the listening mode used when DTS or DT S- HD High Resolution format digital audio signals are pl ayed (DVD, LD, CD, etc.). Specifies the default li stening mode for DTS-HD Master Audio sources, su ch as Blu-ray or HD DVD (input via HDMI).
60 En Multi Zone ■ Zone 2 Out, Zone 3 Out ` Fixed : The Zone 2/3 volume must be set on the amp in that zone. ` Variable : The Zone 2/3 volume can be set on the AV receiver.
61 En Note • Only the input source assigned to the HDMI IN via “ HDMI Input ” is enabled ( ➔ page 45 ). • The power consumption during standby mode will increase during the HDMI Through function; however in the fo llowing cases, th e power cons umption can be saved: – The TV is in standby mode.
62 En Network This section explains how to configure the AV receiver’s network setti ngs manually. If your router’s DHCP server is enabled, yo u don’t need to change any of these settings, as the AV rece iver is set to use DHCP to configure itself automatically by default (i.
63 En Main menu Remote Controller Setup Remote Mode Setup See “Looking up for Remo te Control Code” ( ➔ page 73 ). Activities Se tup Via onscreen menu, you can spec ify what actions will be taken by the Easy macro command in the Easy macro mode ( ➔ page 43 ).
64 En Speaker Levels ■ Subwoofer Level ` –15.0dB to 0.0dB to +12.0dB in 0.5 dB steps. ■ Center Level ` –12.0dB to 0.0dB to +12.0dB in 0.5 dB steps. You can adjust the volume of each spea ker while listening to an input source. These temporary adjustme nts are cancelled when the AV receiver is set to standby.
65 En Music Optimizer ■ Music Optimizer ` Off ` On Turn this setting on to enhance the sound quality of compressed music fi les. Use it with music files tha t use “lossy” compression, su ch as MP3.
66 En Multi Zone In addition to the main listening room, you ca n also enjoy playback in the other room , or as we call Multi Z one. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two ways you can connect Zone speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the AV receiver.
67 En 12V Trigger Out When Zone 2/3 is turned on, the output from the 12V TRIGGER OUT jack goes high ( +12 V and max. 150 mA for Zone 2, +12 V and ma x. 25 mA for Zone 3). Connecting this jack to a 12-volt tr igger input on a component in Zone 2/3 will ma ke that component turn on or off as the AV receiver turns on or off the Zone 2/3.
68 En Adjusting the Volume for Zones ■ Operating on the rem ote controller ■ Operating on the AV receiver If your Zone 2/3 speakers are c onnected to a receiver or integrated amp in Zone 2/3, use its volume control to adjust the volum e. Muting Zones ■ Operating on the rem ote controller Tip • To unmute, press ZONE followed by MUTING again.
69 En To control the AV receiver wi th the remote controller while you’re in Zone, you’ll need a commercially available m ultiroom remote control kit for each zone.
70 En Controlling Other Components iPod/iPhone Playback via Onkyo Dock UP-A1 Dock With the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the mu sic, photos, or movies stored on y our Apple iPod/iPhone through the AV receiver and enjoy great sound. You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to operate your iPod/iPhone.
71 En ■ Status Messages If either of the following me ssages is not displayed on the AV receiver’s display, check the connection to your iPod/iPhone. • P ORT Reading The AV receiver is checking the connection with the dock. • P ORT Not Support The AV receiver do not support the connected dock.
72 En ✔ : Available buttons • With some iPod/iPhone models, generations and RI Docks, certain buttons ma y not work as expected. • For detailed operation of iPod/iPhone, please refe r to the instruction manual of the RI Dock. *1 This button does not tur n the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off.
73 En Controlling Other Components You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to control your other AV compone nts, including those made by other manufacturers. Th is section ex plains how to ent er the remote control code (wit h the default underlined) for a component that you want to control: DVD, TV, CD, etc.
74 En You’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • Though the provid ed remote cont rol codes are correct at the time of printing, they are subject to change. 12 When y ou sear ched f or th e model, a message “Suc- cessful” will appear .
75 En Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the re m ote controller at the AV receiver, not the component. This allows you to control components that are out of view, in a rack, for example.
76 En Note • With some components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : Available buttons *1 When you press 8 SOURCE , the related component is turned on (or of f). *2 The p function is not su pported. The p supported by the AV receiver is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.
77 En The AV receiver’s remote controller ca n learn the commands of other remote con trollers. By transmitting, for example, the Play command from your CD player’s remote controller, th e supplied remote controller can learn it, and then reproduce the ex act same command when its 1 is pressed in CD remote mode.
78 En You can program the re mote controller’s ACTIVITIES to perform a sequence of remote control actions. Example: To play a CD you typically ne ed to perform the following actions: 1. Press RECEIVER to sele ct the Receive r remote controller mode.
79 En Appendix Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using the AV receiver, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, contact y our Onkyo dealer.

84 En ■ If the picture on your TV/monitor connected to the HDMI output(s) is un stable, try switching the DeepColor function off To turn off the DeepColor function, simultaneously press the CBL /SAT and 8 ON/STANDBY buttons on the AV receiver. While holding down CBL/SAT , press 8 ON/STANDBY until “ Off ” appears on the display.
85 En Firmware Update To update the firmware of the AV receiver, you can choose from the following two methods: update via network, or update via USB storage. Choose the one that best suits your environment. Before proceeding with the update, please read the co rresponding explanations carefully.
86 En Troubleshooting Case 1: If “ No Update ” is displayed on the front display of the AV receiver, it m eans that th e firmware has already been updated. You do not need to do anything further . Case 2: If an error occurs, “ Error!! *-** ” is displayed on the front display of the AV receiver.

88 En Connection Tips and Video Signal Path The AV receiver supports seve ral connection formats for compatibility with a wide range of AV equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your com ponents. Use the followi ng sections as a guide.
89 En Audio components can be conn ected by using any of the following audio connection formats: analog, analog multichannel, optical, coaxia l or HDMI. When choosing a connection form at, bear in mind that the AV receiver does not convert digital input signals f or analog line outputs and vice versa.

91 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV, Player, or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interact ive over HDMI, is the name of the sy stem control function found on Onky o components. The AV receiver ca n be used with CEC (Co nsumer Electroni cs Control), wh ich allows system control o ver HDMI and is part of the HDMI standa rd.
92 En ■ How to connect and setup 1 Confirm the connecting and setting. 1. Connect the HDMI OUT MAIN jack to the HDMI input jack of the TV. 2. Connect the audio output from the TV to the OPTICAL IN 2 jack of the AV receiver using an optical digita l cable.
93 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demand s of digital TV, HDMI (Hi gh Definition Multimedia Inte rface) is a new digital interface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc/DVD player s, set-top boxes, and other video components.
94 En Network/USB Features The following diagram show s how you can connect the AV receiver to your home networ k. In this example, it’s connected to a LAN port on a router, which has a 4-port 100Base-TX switch built-in. ■ Ethernet Network For the best results, a 100B ase-TX switched Ethernet network is recommended.
95 En ■ Server playback The AV receiver can play digi tal music files stored on a computer or media server and supports the following technologies: • Windows Media Player 11 • Windows Media Player 12 • Windows Media Connect 2.
96 En For server playback and playback fr om a USB device, the AV receiver supports the following music file formats. Variable bit-rate (VBR) f iles are supported. However, playback time may not be display correctly. Note • With remote playback, the AV receiver does not support the following music file formats: FLAC and Ogg Vorbis.
